PLACE DES NATIONSEvent Infrastructure

The idea is to design a light, airy roof structure that would gen-tly shelter the activites take place. The structural shape is inspired by Japanese origami and the light paper structures of Shigeru Ban.

SHADOW Bibliothèque Marc-Favreau

Shadow is used as a metaphor for the books and theconcept for the library. The knowledge that one obtains from reading has a shadowy existence, in which is permanent, and part of someone but hidden. Thus the library as the container for books emerges as a shadow box.

The experience prescribed inside the space betweenthe shadows is dark with a pensive and serene atmosphere. It is organized around series of curtain walls with different porosity. The outer wall is transparent glass, where as the sec-ond inner layer of wall is translucent glass that is more opaque and blocks most of the light and view to the outisde. The space in between the exterior wall and the second layer glass is a brightspace for work rooms and stack area organized around the circumference of these walls. Semi-enclosed in-side the boundary of the interior wall is left with the dark space which is contrasted by the pools of light coming from the light shafts inside the space. Each light shaft is programmed with different function, such as adult, teenager, children, service, and staff. People will spend most of their time inside the shaft where a giant skylight is located at the center of each shaft to allow light penetrate through. The light shaft is multiple leveled and brighter as one moves upstairs. At the top of the light shaft is a relaxing space where one is bathed in natural sunlight.

BRICK BLOCK HOUSEMurdoch-Laing Competition 2009

Each lot is designed primarily for single ownervship with two separate volumes with the possi-bility of leasing the smaller volume. The two units are depicted as two solid block shells separated by a central courtyard. One is a complete and generous living space. The other one is a smaller minimal space that can be leased or accommodate various uses. i.e. a workshop.

The row houses in Montreal generally are long solid masses that maximize and condense liv-ing spaces. It creates a general streetscape of a continuum volume. The characteristic of row houses is redefined as ways of façade walls are monumental that remains static and unchanged. Contrast-ingly accommodating different flows of people over time, thus the multitude of lifestyle, is thus unlim-ited and unpredictable. The design approach is to challenge the limits to defining living spaces and boundary lines. Outside the freedom is constraints, like social rules, a certain regulation that has to be followed, the exterior cladding conceals what happens inside and is carefully inserted and conforming to its surrounding. Inside, th boundary lines that separate spaces and the residents can build their life inside these open spaces around the staircase that provides essential functions.

The project takes on a geometric minimalist style. Spaces are carefully placed into blocks of volume that give the project a dynamic twist to spatial atmosphere. The difference in heights looks onto and frames each view. The theatrical unobstructed view as well as the skylights lifting the trans-parent staircases provides an architectural experience meant to diminish one’s stress from the busy life. The spaces are customizable and it should be the people inside that design these spaces. The project plays with the varying degree of privacy on different standing point, the light penetrates the stairway. The project provides a clear solution of spatial separation with the outer world and articulates a sense of permanence, simplicity and flexibility.

EXTENSITIES2008 - 2009 ACSA Concrete Student Design Competition

“The magical figure of the architect only survives in the apparent play between atmosphere and building, ephemeral climate and material object. Architects work hard to create the impression of such a relationship. In the end, the main effect of their discourse is the fragile illusion that architecture is more than an effect, the illusion that atmosphere can be controlled.”

- Mark Wigley The Architecture of Atmosphere

A tramway station is a space focused on movements. People are constantly walking, waiting, boarding and sitting in this zone of speed transitions. Extensities is a Paris tramway station that envelops both the body and senses of the inhabitants by engaging them in a variety of experiences on different scales as they circulate through the space.

At a large scale, the project can be viewed as only the physical environment created by the porous skin that encases the surface. The varying degrees of porosity generate a unique atmosphere involving plays of light and shadow as the sun is filtered tthrough, as well as a microclimate in which one is intermittently protected from wind and rain. This forms a transient ambiance for people who are simply circulating beneath the surface, which can be experienced without acknowledging the material object that generated it. One experiences a gradual transition between an indoor and outdoor environment, reminiscent of the sensations discovered in nature when walking beneath a canopy of trees.

Conversely, upon extended observation, the experience might revolve around the structure as a whole, wherein one will sense the atmosphere beneath the surface as it varies along with the climate and subsequently discover its source. A soothing environment is created by the gently sloping curves of the surface, thus one will begin to discern that the seemingly continuous surface is in reality tessellated.

The project developes in 2 main stages: research and design of a concrete prototype and adapt the prototype to the site surroundings.

EARTH CURVATURE: A LOCAL | GLOBAL REST AREALyceum Fellowship 2011 Competition

The idea is to create a monument in remembrance of the ocean that this desert once was. Inspired by the continuous form of seashells, the rest stop is organized in a sequence of layered spaces responding to different times of the day. As one proceeds, the building skin thickens, envelops and shelters both in form and climatic engagements. The view of the desert slowly disappears and one ultimately arrives at a microclimate environment where they become observer of nature through the big circular skylight of the theatre plaza. Every layer marks a different frame in time. The outer layer focuses on day time engagements with the desert transitioning to the middle layer where the astral phenomenon of the sky is highlighted, and finally into minimal bedrooms focusing on resting. In this open and continuous structure the visi-tors are able to experience the desert in both their senses and visuals as one proceed from complete openness into a microclimate created in layers. The awareness of desert is brought out from gradual enclosure and disclosure of spaces, light, and atmospheric properties felt by the senses.

SYNTA TELESCOPE FACTORY EXTENSIONNantong, Jiangsu, China

The factory extension is situated in a quiet neighbourhood in the city Nantong. The project involves mass planning over the entire site: factory plants, warehouses, office, residence, and multi-use guest center. The aim is to create a warm, international style that would attract the citi-zens to work there, while conforming to the rural surroundings.

Violin Evolution

The project is dedicated to my love for violin.

The design process involves close studies of the conventional violin form, porportion, and materiality. And from there, transforms the form adapting to the different selected materials used.

Each piece focus on different char-acteristics of the violin in a grow-ingly abstract order.
