As the University of Oregon retrofits Allen Hall, this project investigates the brick masonry veneer wall as well as the glass facade. The brick facade responds to the ornamental character of the existing structure. The windows provide fresh air and daylight without excessive solar gain. This wall structure also has a parapet and supports a vegetated roof on this part of the building. The glass enclosure design minimizes heating and cooling loads by integrating shading devices to reduce solar heat gain and providing night ventilation to expose thermal mass to cool breezes.

During my summer internship at Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc., George Taylor and Nicholas Chow introduced me to the Garage Lobby Renovation project. From their design, I created a Revit Model to help the client understand how the various options for the renovation would look in 3-D. From Revit, I exported an AutoCAD sheet set to correspond to WJE standards of drawings and annotated the plans. After following red-line changes, I submitted this set for the client meeting.

KINETIC ARCHITECTURE:HURRICANE SHUTTER

7

Because hurricanes are happening more frequently as time progresses, my group and I developed a hurricane shutter that is more beautiful than plywood sheets, easier to implement, and doubles as a sun shading device on beautiful days. In Solidworks, I modeled all of the parts for our assembly to make sure that our counterweights, pulleys, cranks, and gears would work. We then used Softimage to animate how someone opens the shutters. Please find the animation at: https://www.dropbox.com/s/g3k9dj5vevn9wkl/HurricaneShutter.mov
