COVERINGLETTER

To whom it may concern,

I am writing due to my interest to join your studio after following your work for years.I have graduated in Seville’s Architecture School (Spain). Besides, I have always possesed an insatiable curiosity about editing and designing within different cultures, as well as about the importance of languages in developing a wide vision of cultural context, being able to work in English, Spanish and Italian perfectly.

I have experience working with humble tools for upbringing designs that go beyond actual branding; experimenting with materials and sustainable challenges have been my targets as I have always believed the only way to think about architecture and design is forward, by not underestimating the importance of artcraft methods.

Spaces cannot be neutral because human being is not. So I do think about the process of design, involving cultural knowledge, only to be learnt through personal experience in order to appreciate the fact that there is little difference between Brancusi’s artwork, Shigeru Ban’s paper houses and Mies van der Rohe’s furniture.

The inner core is creativity. After living in Eastern Europe and worked as a typographer and designer in a familiar business, I have become clearly aware that design can be a social expression.Due to the lack of opportunities to develop those skills, I decided to come to London, where through exhibitions and word of mouth movement, I am building up new ideas and projects apart from my shop assistant’s job whose flexibility allows me to keep looking for motivational crafts and studios that are stretching the boundaries beyond the crisis and pre-established policies.

Throughout these years, I have worked in housing projects, scenography, Middle Ages Urban Planningresearch, a Colombian Observatory, a dreamed roof-terrace based on Kafka’s Methamorphosis, an oldtimber factory whose foundation was emptied to adapt to ARCO’s necessities, a militar fortress in theThames, and so on.

Those, however, were my former challenges. Nowadays, I am working in Eisenhower Center refurbish-ment (London) and a small furniture charity that consists of an old furniture restoration, trying to develop a new handcraft mobiliary system beyond Ikea’s imperium.

That is the reason why I want to share your future challenges by joining your studio in an undoubtely fulfilling position.

Sincerely,

Fernando Arias

LOCATED IN THE SURROUNDINGS OF MARBELLA, THIS COMPLEX CONSISTS OF AN AREA OF 9500 M2 ,WITH A STAGE ERECTED AND WHERE WE CAN FIND STANDS SURROUNDING IT (CAPACITY: 2200 PEOPLE) AND WITH A TOTAL OF 50 CONTAINERS (WHICH ARE DOTATED WITH NATURAL CONDITIONAL REFRIGEMENT).

APART FROM THE CONTAINERS, THE REST OF THE STRUCTURE WAS DESIGNED TO BE AS LIGHTFUL AS POSSIBLE, BUT WE HAD TO PROJECT A SOLID BASEMENT TO RESIST THE HORIZONTAL ACTIONS PROVOKED BY WIND, DUE TO THE CONVECTION CURRENTS THAT BLOW THROUGH THE QUARRY.

ARCO

A unique atmosphere: EL PRADO (MADRID)

Madrid has an enormous variety ofcultural elements.

However, the most attractive axis is Prado-Recoletos where we can find The Thyssen, El Prado and Caixa Forum; now,, we introduce this ARCO center as a contempora-nean point of reference.

ARCO is an international programme ofmodern art which is celebrated in Madridonce a year. Despite of being one of themost important events in the capital, it is celebrated temporarily inIFEMA (Business and Events Park).

STARS' WAREHOUSE

Redsand fortress is converted into an Astronomical Centre. The intervention has some physical boundaries as limited space and non-existent connections between some of the modules. What’s more, it is strictly necessary to build an inmaterial

way to connect human beings with the Universe.

For that reason, we searched for an option which could offer solutions to the restlessness way that human has studied the sky along the history.

This sensation was based on the climbing need to a higher point, as if humans could understand better the stars’ enigma by reaching the top of the hill.

The fortress’ modules are emptied for being a stars’ warehouse and gateways are constructed between them. We only preserve the metallic skin as a

continent which shelters an ethereal structure (geodesic construction) as the center point with an specific use that brings us information about the space and offers the opportunity to climb (as we can see in the section below) through scaffolding to admire the unknow inmensity over our heads, with an specific staging to develope

different activities in the process of going up.

Scaffolding is an opening and light solution over geodesic structures to offer numerous ways despite the fact that ground floor is limited in the Astronomical Center. Having said that, we present the beginning of a center where light structu-res can grow, overflowing the module skin and with the possibility of being joined

to the conserved structure.

“ That very night, in that very same place, José Arcadio Buendía dreamt that a noisy city where all the buildings had walls made out of mirrors was erected.

He asked which city was that and he was answered with aname he never heard before and that had no meaning at allbut which actually had a supernatural resonance in that dream:

MACONDO.”
