In this context, FRAC Centre is located at the ormerSubsistances militaires site in Orlans. This architectural ren-ovation was undertaken by the Centre region, the contract-ing authority, in cooperation with the state - Ministry o Cultureand Communication - regional oce o cultural aairs (DRAC),Europe (under FEDER) and the City o Orlans.

Innovative and daing ahiteteArchitects Jakob + MacFarlane, managing the project, haveopted or a strong physical presence. The extension, christenedThe Turbulences, because o its preabricated tubular struc-ture covered by an anodised aluminium casing, conceptualizesdynamic architecture. Partly covered by an interactive veil olight, produced by the associate artists Electronic Shadow, theTurbulences will be programmed in real time.

    New Feate

The FRAC Centre will have new eatures within its 3,000 m2

    : apermanent gallery (370 m2) displaying the collections fagshipworks; temporary exhibition rooms approximately 1000 m2; apedagogical workshop (180 m2); a documentation centre; a gar-den designed by ruedurepos (400 m2).

The Turbulences (370 m2), a public reception area, comprises acaeteria, a bookshop and an auditorium. Furthermore the FRACCentre benets rom outsourced art work reserves (1,500 m2).

The FRAC Centre, a research laboratory or architecture, willprovide a valuable tool or developing a transdisciplinary culturalprogramme centred on relationships between art, architectureand design.

From 14th September 2013, the Regional Fund forContemporary Art in the Centre region (FRAC Centre)opens its doors in a new location perectly in tune with its mis-sions and vocation: the diusion o contemporary art andarchitecture.

The dynamic development o the architectural extension con-cept rom architects Jakob + MacFarlane, gave the new venueits name: The Turbulences.

The programme will be heralded by the 9th ArchiLab, interna-tional architecture meeting and some thirty events a ssociatedwith Orlans and in the Centre region.

    The FRAC Centre

A niqe oetion of ahiteteThe FRAC, a result o the cultural decentralisation in the 1980s,o a specic agreement between the state and the regions, whoare celebrating their thirtieth anniversary this year, have becomea model or the diusion o contemporary art and regional pres-ence. A perpetually evolving model, as evidenced by the FRACCentre.

A collection, a laboratory, a resource, and a centre or research,as well as a site or experimentation, the Turbulences - FRACCentre will oer another experience o ar t and architecture.

Its unique collection brings together contemporary art and exper-imental architecture rom the 1950s to today. Internationallyrenowned, to date it includes some 15,000 architectural draw-ings, 800 models and 600 works by artists.

The FRAC Centre, unded by the Centre region and the Ministryo Culture and Communication, is one o a new generation o

FRAC institutions that have already proved themselves as centreso cultural appeal. The objective is to engage dialogue betweendisciplines at the heart o new equipment. Its programme will

join: museum collection unctions and artistic experimentation, mediation and cultural activities.

sympoimThe challenges o this exhibition will covered in two symposiums:

Architectures and Sciences: a new naturalness, international symposium, Scne Nationale dOrlans,Thursday 24th October 2013, 9:30am-6pmIn partnership with the Maison de l architecture du Centre andthe Rseau des maisons de l architecture (Maison de larchitec-ture network), the international symposium will bring togetherarchitects displayed as part o ArchiLab.

The Nature of the Artefact, Domaine National de Chambord,Friday 25th October 2013, 10am-6pmAn interdisciplinary symposium combining history o art, archi-tecture and epistemology in the sciences rom the Renaissanceto digital tools.

    Free entry, by reservation only.

Created in 1999, the prerogative o this internationally renow-ned event is to be a true laboratory or architecture, presentingthe most advanced research in terms o architectural creation oneach occasion.

Curated by its ounders, Marie-Ange Brayer, Director o FRACCentre and Frdric Migayrou, Deputy Director o the CentrePompidou, MNAM-CCI, this new event Naturaliser larchitec-ture (Naturalizing Architecture) is devoted to the interac-tion between digital architecture and the sciences, exploring thechallenges aced in simulating the living world.

Today, through recourse to the most advanced digital tools,

architects envisage projects which evolve according to principalssimilar to those ound in nature. In close proximity to science, they develop a high level o prociency in mathematics, whichenables them to articially simulate ormation and growth pro-cesses unique to the kingdom o lie.

The architecture is thereore designed like an organism inconstant adaptation, with the ability to evolve in close interac-tion with the material conditions o its environment..

Broadly exceeding the boundaries o their practice, architectsnow develop a practice at the crossroads o design, computerscience, engineering and biology. Conditions or production inthe domain o architecture are radically redened by this conver-gence, as well as by the constant evolution o the processes and

tools or digital manuacturing. For the rst time, these new design processes which integratethe elds o robotics, nanotechnology, genetics and biotechno-logy are presented through research o a new generation.

The 9th ArchiLab is an opportunity to discover projects by 40architects, designers and artists through interactive environ-ments, installations and pavilions, designed specically or theexhibition..
