“The Warm Safe Home Project” This Project aims to engage the community in mak-ing art, to raise awareness of the issues underlying elder abuse. Everyone has the right to a warm, safe home, however in some situations, the home can be a place of danger, violence and abuse.

By making hundreds of little houses, decorating them and displaying them in various places through-out our city, we want to highlight the need for digni-ty, safety, and respect for our elders. All art materials are provided. SPECIAL SCHOOL HOLIDAY Warm Safe Home Craft Session– Bring the kids& grandkids WHEN: 1:00– 3pm Tuesday 2 July WHERE: Archie Graham Community Centre

Age-friendly Warrnambool Project

This summer as part of the Age-friendly Warrnambool Project, Warrnambool’s older residents where asked to identify which issues were most important in improving the age-friendliness of our city.

90 people returned completed surveys and this information was used to help shape the Age-friendly Warrnambool Project plan.

About 30 people who returned surveys indicated interest in further involvement in this project.

An Information Forum was held on April 24th for these people, representatives from clubs and

groups, along with a number of Warrnambool City Council staff with an interest in the project. In all, we had 30 people attend this forum at the ARC Stadium Warrnambool.

Presentations were made regarding Warrnambool’s changing demographic wherein people aged 60+ make up a quarter of our population, as well as the story behind the age-friendly movement which aims to make sure our modern cities and communities enable older people live safely, enjoy good health and stay involved.

The forum also included a presentation about the approach that we will take for the Age-friendly Warrnambool Project. The main areas that this project will focus on are Social Partici-pation, Transport, Information and Communication, Civic Participation, and Inclusion.

We asked people to break into groups around particular sub-projects and lively discussions fol-lowed. This gave us really valuable insight as to our approach to these sub-projects.

In the coming weeks we will start reaching out to clubs and groups that wish to grow their mem-berships by welcoming older members - if you know of a club or group that would be a good fit, why don’t you put them in touch with Age-friendly Warrnambool? Contact Age-friendly Project Officer Becky Nevin Berger on 55 594 488 or [email protected] Monday and Wednesday.

As part of the Here We Are Project, Vicki Kearney, our Local Community Builder based here at the Archie Graham Community Centre has created an Individual Safety Information Lanyard as part of her current Communication’s Project.

The Individual Safety Lanyard has allowed for localised information to be added to the icons to make the card specific and relevant to each person.

The cards can be worn, attached to mobility equipment or carried in personal baggage.

The goal is for the card to help the user and the person assisting to better communicate needs and intention, especially during times of worry or distress.

Although, first developed to assist with people experiencing speech difficulties through disability, the cards have been identified as being appropriate for many people in many different circumstances.

The Individual Safety Information Lanyards are free and available at the reception desk of the

Archie Graham Community Centre. See the sample below.
