Dear Parent / Carer, We are now approaching the point in the year when we watch our Year 11 pupils sit their GCSE exams and then leave the school for their long summer break before starting college in the Autumn. This always causes a change in the feel of the school, and is a time of very mixed emotions. It’s lovely to see these fine young people grow up and start to take their place in the world, but we will also miss them and we wish them well in the next stage of their lives. We also turn our thinking to the new pupils who will be joining us in September. Once again we are heavily oversubscribed for places, and Mrs Bridges has been visiting the pupils who have a place with us to share some of the excitement and worry of starting at Archbishop Temple School. The school has seen some changes in the past few weeks. We installed a state of the art wifi system over the Easter holidays, which should help us develop a first class ICT system in the next few years. We’ve also managed to repair the subsidence damage to the path coming into school and installed an additional route into school, which should make life safer for the pupils. The pupils have achieved some notable successes in the past few weeks. The Young Enterprise group, ‘Archbishop Enterprises’, won a resounding victory in the local competition and now go on to the North West finals. I’d like to thank Mrs Knight for all her work supporting the team and congratulate the girls on their hard work throughout the project and the remarkable presentation that so impressed the judges. Ben Jarvis won the junior section of the Woodard Schools Music competition in London, with Willow Moody and Rabin Joseph also giving very impressive performances. The Year 11 boys’ football team became Preston League Champions for the fifth successive year. They fought a really competitive match with Our Lady’s in the final. They have won every game they have played this season and seem to go from strength to strength under the inspirational leadership of captain, Stuart Marley. The Year 7 football team has also reached the Preston Cup Final, played at PNE’s Deepdale ground. You can read more about these achievements on our new website, as well as find out more about the extra curricular opportunities available to your child. I do feel very strongly that a young person gets most out of their time at school if they join in the extra provision on offer, and we are very fortunate in having so many staff who offer some wonderful opportunities to your children. I will be writing to you shortly to give you details about the celebrations we have planned for next year. The school celebrates its 50 th anniversary in 2014, and we have planned a year of events to mark the occasion. Listed below are some of the events we have planned, please keep these dates free and join us.

Dear Parent / Carer,

We are now approaching the point in the year when we watch our Year 11 pupils sit their GCSE exams and then leave the school for their long summer break before starting college in the Autumn.

In addition to this we hope to plant trees, hold a street party along the drive, have a balloon release, and get ourselves into the Guinness Book of World Records.

As part of the anniversary we are trying to contact as many former pupils and staff of the school as possible. If you know someone who has a past link to the school, please ask them to send their contact details to Sufia Desai, our events and alumni officer. Her email address is [email protected]. We’d love to hear from them.

I feel very excited about the next twelve months at Archbishop Temple School. I hope you will be able to join us and help us celebrate all that this fantastic school has to offer.

Since September 2012 ‘Archbishop Enterprises’ has taken part in a national competition run by Young Enterprise. They set up their own business, creating a business plan, raising finances and developing skills in customer relations and product awareness. The team devoted many hours to the competition and have grown in both knowledge and confidence. They have participated at events organised by Young Enterprise and this culminated in the Lancashire West Strategic finals on Wed 1st May.

The team arrived at UCLAN full of excitement, enthusiasm and a little nervous apprehension. They assembled their trade stand aiming to showcase their business effectively. Local schools were in attendance but the team remained focused and prepared for the presentations. Each team presented their business idea and reflected on their successes and failures. ‘Archbishop Enterprises’ were judged to have done this most effectively, winning the ‘Best Presentation Award’. Eleanor Mills, Managing Director, also won ‘Student of the Year Award’ for her excellent organisation of the team after being nominated by Mrs Knight and Chris Watts, the team’s business advisor.

The final award was the most anticipated, especially after seeing the range of great ideas and presentations from other teams. Mrs Knight and Chris Watts were delighted as the team were named ‘Company of the Year’! They were presented

with a large shield and a glass trophy. Mrs Knight

Over the month of May, Archbishop Temple School was turned into a breeding ground for young entrepreneurs.

The ‘Tenner’ organisation e n c o u r a g e d o u r pupils to use their entrepreneurial skills by lending them a ‘tenner’ and challenging them to use it as capital to make money for charity.

The idea was taken up in a variety of different ways by pupils from each house. Every day all sorts of items were on sale, ranging from friendship bracelets to bath bombs to Egyptian bookmarks! Perhaps the most innovative idea was Mrs Storey’s form which came up with ‘Mr Battarbee badges’ as a profitable way of celebrating our long-serving deputy head’s forthcoming retirement! These sold like hotcakes!

Some pupils worked in small groups, for example pupils from CS screened films and sold drinks and popcorn whereas Durham house pupils took the risk of purchasing an ‘ipad mini’ with their collective tenners and organised a raffle. Mrs Smith’s form used their creative skills to ‘tie-dye’ T shirts which proved to be very popular. At the end of the month pupils have to return £11 for

every ’tenner’ borrowed and the rest will be given to the house charities. Mrs Knight

On Wednesday 22nd May, 53 pupils from

Years 8,9 and 10 participated in a Preston

school's dance festival at the Charter Theatre.

‘Dance Unite’ was a celebration of dance

around the world and twelve schools from

across Preston and surrounding areas took to

the stage to create an energetic and

exuberant atmosphere. Our Year 10 girls

performed a Chinese Tea Dance and a small

group of Year 10 pupils performed a beautiful

ballet piece to ‘Hero’ by Enrique Inglesias. A

further 32 pupils performed 'Master of the

House' from the famous Les Miserables, led by Helen Aylott and Charlie Donnelly. Miss Keller

and I were extremely proud of all those who took part especially the way they acted as such

positive role models to the primary school pupils. Well done! Mrs Jones

Congratulations to Ben Jarvis in Year 8 for winning the junior section of the Woodard Music Competition in London. Ben writes:

“Back in October Willow, Rabin and myself auditioned for the Woodard schools young musician competition. We all recorded our pieces. Mine was a solo with my brass band I was playing with and Willow’s and Rabin’s were recorded in school. Willow and I auditioned for the junior section and Rabin auditioned for the senior section. They were all sent off and judged in conjunction with about 100 from around the country that were entered. When we found out we got through to the finals in London we were all very excited! The finals were held at St. John’s Smith Square, in Westminster on Saturday 4

th of May. All of us got up very early for our trip to London. There were 31 in the final, 17 in the

junior and 14 in the senior section on instruments ranging from violin to bassoon. When we reached the venue where the contest would take place we had our short rehearsals and the job of putting the drum kit together. The junior competition started at 2pm and then after the interval the senior competition took place. All of us were invited on stage at the end when the winners were announced. There were two runners up and a winner for each section. I won the junior section and an organist from another school won the senior section. The day was fantastic and it was a great experience!” Well done to Ben, Willow and Rabin for their fantastic efforts!

Many thanks to everyone who sponsored my retirement ’swansong’

which involved running the Greater Manchester 10km in aid of this

year’s Canterbury charity, ‘North West Air Ambulance’. The run was

completed in 60mins 46 seconds which, for an old crock, I felt was

fairly respectable! On the starting line I met Dr Jenette, one of the Air

Ambulance doctors, who told me her inspiring story. Jenette’s

husband was an Air Ambulance doctor who was tragically killed in a

road accident. Although she was a mother of four children, all under

seven years of age, she made the decision to train as an Accident

and Emergency doctor and is now one of the Air Ambulance

doctors herself. I needed no more encouragement to do my best to

finish! Anyone who would like to donate can still do so by visiting my

‘JustGiving’ site, (search for Ruth Tickle) which remains open for a

few more weeks. Mrs Tickle

Just before the half term holidays, Mrs Blackwell organised a charity cycling event in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association. The charity is close to her heart as her father died recently from this incurable disease. Pupils were invited to pay £1 each, to power the pedals on a set of exercise bikes, in an effort to cycle 127 miles per house! A cake sale and raffle was also organised and an amazing £2010 was raised on the day, with more money pledged. Many thanks to all pupils who took part, some of whom are pictured below.

June)

The PTA continue to support the school by helping us tidy up the entrance area.

As you approach the front of school you come into an area that looks like a

delivery area rather than the front of a prestigious school, so we’d like to tidy it

up. You are invited to come and help us paint and decorate the walls and

railings. No special skills are necessary, and a barbeque (burgers and Halal

hot-dogs) and soft drinks will be provided. This should be a fun family event

which benefits the school. Paint will be provided, but please bring your own paint brushes.
