A s 2017 comes to an end, it is a Ɵme for reflecƟon and celebraƟon! ARC once again hosted our end of year celebraƟon at Brothers with the help from Millennium Entertainment. The Christmas Disco welcomed over 160 of ARC’s Service Users, Staff, Volunteers, Friends and Families, with all who aƩended dancing the night away. We were also able to take a moment during the evening to say farewell to a number of ARC’s team. 2017 has been a massive year for ARC, with expansion in almost all service areas. InformaƟon sessions hosted by ARC, along with a number of other services and presenters (thank you to Linda Hayes for her informaƟve session both at Brothers in the middle of the year, but also for ARC’s Staff Development Day in November) have assisted in raising awareness of the scheme. I always bring a pen to Karen’s programs be-
cause she never has one. I am moving to Syd-
ney– see my special story about it. This Christ-
mas I am most looking forward to seeing my
brother and grandparents.
My name is Ka . I like to help people by
giving them hugs. This holiday I am looking
forward to spending me all together with
my family. I love music and dancing and
wri ng my stories. I love magazine a lot be-
cause I get to tell my own stories.
My name is Kate. I like to help people by
being funny and making them laugh. I am
looking forward to spending me with my
family in the holidays. I love story program
because I got to write and draw and make
my own book.
ARC Magazine is supported by Karen Jackson
I am moving to Sydney with my family. I am really looking forward to
going but also feel sad to leave all my friends at ARC and Cairns. I will
miss my bowling friends, going to the movies with Adrian and Danny,
Kam at the Hub and going to the ARC Café with Gary and Jenny.
In Sydney I look forward to going in our new car, seeing my old friends
there, seeing some live sport ac on like the Sydney Swans play in the
AFL and the Red and Waratahs in the Rugby and going to see all the big
music concerts like Pink and Ed Sheeran.
I would like to say goodbye because I am not going to see you guys as much.
It was fantas c being at ARC and I loved coming. I want to say thankyou and
goodbye to all the staff, par cularly Karen, Gary, Jenny, Heath, Anson, Rob-
by, Sheridan and Velvet for doing everything for me.
In October myself, Deb, Karen and our support workers,
Gail and Jill, went on a cruise to the islands. It was really
good, I give it a 10 out 10. I was feeling a bit nervous and
excited all at once when we le Cairns. Inside the ship is
huge with lots of pictures on the walls. There is lots to do on
the ship with restaurants, movie theatre and a pool. My fa-
vourite parts of the trip were going out and drinking fancy
cocktails and dancing all night and ea ng, ea ng,
ea ng….Ea ng breakfast, lunch and dinner was my favourite
part—the food was amazing—I was in heaven; cake, pan-
cakes, ice-cream, potato bake, chicken and fish– I went crazy
for the fish.
I also enjoyed going shopping upstairs, Deb brought a lovely
red Hawaiian lay and perfume and I got a hat and three
pens.
Our room was really nice too, it was nice and cool. There
was a shower and toilet in the bathroom and a TV that
played nice movies. I apparently was snoring my head off
but unfortunately for my room mates I couldn’t help it! We
had a great me.
Darren: I have worked at a re rement village now for over a year. I work 2 days a week.
It is a really great job and I absolutely love my job. I am a bit of a Jack of all trades, I help
wherever I am needed. The residents love me, they really enjoy my company and like to
see me every day. I will be helping out these holidays by probably working extra days, I am
happy to do it.
Lyne e: I am work at the re rement village. I really enjoy my job. I work hard and enjoy
cha ng to all the residents and helping them out. I am good at my job, I like doing the
cra ac vi es with them.
I work 2 days a week at the Ta ooed Sailor Café. I have
been working there a few months now. My boss and
other work friends are really nice. I help out in the kitch-
en, do cleaning, help with the coffee machine and with
the customers. I like working hard and I love my job a
lot.
We work every week at the Shangri La Hotel, Cairns. Gaby and Kerry
work every Wednesday and Kerry also works on Friday mornings. We
have been doing this paid job for 7 years
now and we both really enjoy it, we both
work really hard in the laundry; ironing
the pillow cases, folding the towels and hanging up the bath robes. Our bosses and co-
workers are really kind and we also like ge ng a complimentary lunch from the kitch-
en every shi . At the end of the year they gi us a nights stay at the resort which in-
cludes breakfast. We are looking forward to that this Christmas. To be a good worker
you need to be sensible, follow the rules, learn what to do, work hard and be on me!
BIKE RIDING The guys have really great energy and really have
fun on this program. Shannon W has great enthusiasm and is always
a pleasure to have in bike riding. Tara has gone from being a novice
to being very capable. She is very inspiring, and applies such a great
effort every week, regardless of the condi ons. Nicky VK has been
very impressive with his pa ence and calm a tude and stamina.
SPORT & 360
seen some great commit-
ment from the par cipants. Jimmy turns up every week with a
posi ve ’can do’ a tude. He always strives to do his best and
also encourages and praises the other par cipants to reach their
goals. Ashton is a very fit and is a skil-
ful sportsman; and what is par cularly
impressive this year is his willingness to help others less ca-
pable and assist them in learning. He is a great role model.
Andrew B brings a lovely a tude to sports with his passion
for being involved and is a great team member.
YOGA
SAILING has been such a great, fun program in 2017

gaining great confidence.
them, they are always relaxed
and keen to learn and now
assist the captain to steer the
sailing boat! Great work Dan and
Maile.
ARC Drummers: (ARC Beats) launched their Joy CD and con nued this year of performing professionally at
fes vals and events. The CD was made possible by the help of a RADF Grant and the group laid down their
groovy tracks at a professional recording studio. CD available from
ARC recep on at $10 each. This also included the crea on of a pro-
mo onal film showcasing their professional por olio. Na onal Rural
Health Conference: ARC Beats worked with the Biddigal Indigenous
Dance Crew and Evolve to create a dance/ drumming collabora on to
open the conference and also taught drumming workshops.
CollaborARC; a culmina on of two years work in drama, dance, song, drumming, film and music produce a
live show that ran across two nights at the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Cairns. Behind the scenes there was a
the ARC produc on Crew who created the media releases posters,
me lines and trained and wrote the MC scripts and Aaron Lee
stepped into the Technical Box and helped to run the music cues
and produced a short film documen ng his experience (see ARC’s
Facebook page). Big thanks to all the wonderful staff of ARC
programs that made sure everything ran smoothly back stage and
those who stepped onto stage to support the performers.
Community Ballet Project: Some ARC Dancers performed at Munro Mar n Parklands as part of the
London Royal Ballet Tour in front of 3000 people. Velvet Eldred and ARC Disability Services and the Community
Ballet Project presented Shakespeare’s Winters Tale and it was a thrill for all to part of such a professional
world class showpiece.
ARC Dancers: ARC and Trinity Bay HS collaboration ARC dancers have been working in collabora-
on with Trinity Bay High School for 4 years now and this year we produced a dance film based on Alice in
Wonderland. A great success,

worked hard and had some great achievements this year. Each
par cipant is learning; how to use a sewing machine, hand
sewing, what fabrics to use for certain projects, measurements
and pa erns. This last term they have
made their own individual bags and water
bo le holders to carry their drink
bo les. They all did such a fantas c job,
using the sewing machine with li le assis-
tance and choosing their own fabrics and
colours. Well done!

Alex H: It feels good to make music. I can almost make anything with Garage Band. I can
choose instruments and different genres like piano and orchestra. I feel great and excellent
and brilliant when I hear my own songs. I have created about 8 songs now. I write my own
lyrics and chose and compose the music.
Sam: It is fun making music and you get to be crea ve. I feel excited and proud when I hear
my own songs played.
Simmie: I love song wri ng program. I like listening to myself and musical ar st's. My songs
are about all the musicians I like, such as Elton John, the Beatles and Michael Buble. My songs
are rock style. I really like this program it is good.
Rob: When you make music you get a chance to express the way you feel. Wri ng lyrics for
songs is fun because it’s more fluent when it rhymes. I have
wri en two songs from poems I have wri en and by
learning how to compose my own music, I was able to turn
them into songs. The first one is called ‘Thankyou’ and is for
a special friend and the second one is called ‘A Welcomed
Change’, and it’s about the gra tude I feel towards my sister
Kate.
The song wri ng program, supported by Emmaline Anderson, has been busy
this year crea ng their own lyrics and composing music to create original
music for themselves and for ARC projects, such as:
CollaborARC, The Do’s and Don’ts of Da ng Short Film,
the Cairns Show, ARC Uncut Newsroom and Dance pro-
grams.

SPORT ,SPORT, SPORT, SPORT AND MORE SPORT…
I love summer and sport, all sport - except Boxing because I do not like the violence and them hur ng each other. I love watch- ing sport with my Dad. My favourite sport to watch in summer is cricket. I love the Ashes and the Test Matches and the Big Bash with Bre Lee and the cheerleaders. One year I actually went to the Boxing Day Test with my family at the MCG. It was fantas c– especially when they hit 6’s and the commentators yelled ‘He sliced it out of the ground!’ and I yelled, ‘GOOD SHOT BUDDY!!’
There is nothing be er than relaxing at home with my Grandma
and Grandfather and watching cricket on TV with a cold can of coke and a packet of plain chips. I am as happy as
a Cold Beer! ( I look like Homer on the couch). Tennis is fantas c too. The Australian Open is great to watch in
summer. My favourite player to watch is Raphael Nadel.
By Mitchell & Ka
This is a great place to visit over the summer
holidays. I give it 10/10. I have been to the
Cairns Aquarium twice now and it is amazing. I
went with my Dad for the first me and my sis-
ter Annie and family. If you live in Cairns you can get an annual pass, I have
one and it means I can go whenever I want. I like seeing the Clownfish (from
Finding Nemo) and the Dori Fish, they are very cute. I wasn't scared because
it is safe there with all the big fish in the tanks. You can see s ngrays that
have different colours like the rainbow, turtles (big and small) and sharks.
You can even touch some creatures like the star fish. There is a nice restau-
rant there too which looks lovely.
SUGAR WORLD WATER SLIDE PARK
It is on the south side of Cairns in Edmonton and close to lots of people. It is
heaps of fun and accessible to everyone. There
are waterslides, fountains, swimming pools and
lovely shady picnic areas. It is a blast in summer.
We love the peacocks wandering around too!!
THE MOVIES
over the summer holidays. I
love going to the movies with
my Grandma in Melbourne. We
love to eat Maltesers, chips and
popcorn. I personally don’t rec-
ommend 3D because I don’t
really like it
and it freaks
movie, Star Wars and Jus ce
League and all the Boxing Day
1). Someone to Support You.
You can have someone or others to support you at your planning mee ng. Think about who you want to be

at my family’s house every Saturday etc.

needs, as well as informa on from day services, schedules, ac vity rosters, and informa on about your fami-

priate therapist about why you need this item and maybe 2 quotes outlining cost of item/items.
5). A List of Questions.
Anything that you wish to be clarified; for example, the planning process itself, what will and will not be
funded, when you will receive a decision? Do not forget that you can ask the planner to read back to you
their understanding of your support needs and your goals.
And importantly
6). Keep Informed
