FROM THE AADVANTAGE CEO

In just four short months as Chief Executive Officer of AAdvantage/Arc Human Services, I have experienced an overwhelming amount of well wishes and support from every stakeholder in this organization, and for that, I thank you. Every day it becomes even more evident that the staff and Board of Directors are transforming the way we help people with disabilities. I am honored to be part of such an amazing organization.

An energizing momentum is building around our Advocacy and Self-Advocacy programs, including parent-to-parent and sibling-to-sibling support groups to encourage families and individuals to work together and support each other in their communities. We are also expanding these services to include individuals and families in communities who have not had the opportunity to engage with one another, and whose voices have not been heard.

There is incredible innovation happening – and we are exploring the optimization of technology that will enhance our residential, employment and community participation services. The use of cutting edge technology will improve our quality of care, streamline internal processes and will be critical to meet and, hopefully, surpass the needs of the individuals we serve and those of our internal stakeholders.

None of the success we are realizing would be possible without our direct support staff. I want to express my deepest gratitude for their dedication to the individuals we serve. You are the foundation of our organization, and the quality of our services is directly attributable to you! Your unwavering commitment to provide the best care, support and opportunities to the people we serve does not go unnoticed.

Thank you all for your loyalty and commitment to the people and families we support. It is with your generous spirit, and tremendous commitment that allows those we serve to experience a full life with their family and friends at home, at work and actively participating in their community.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Many changes have occurred, and continue to occur, in the world of providing services to individuals with disabilities. Part of being innovative and ahead of the curve in human services is to ensure that the staff leading the way in times of change have the necessary knowledge, and heartfelt desire, to do whatever is necessary to improve the lives of those we serve. So, while change can sometimes be concerning, in the case of our agency, the changes taking place are very exciting.

I am one of the very changes that I am referencing. I had the privilege of beginning my career with Arc Human Services in the mid-90’s. I held various positions at AHS until venturing into the world of self-employment, where I gained valuable experience as a consultant working with county programs that have responsibility for oversight of service providers for individuals with disabilities. The opportunity to have seen service provision from different prospectives is an attribute that I feel will help me excel in my new role as Executive Director.

The mission and vision of our agency is quite simple: to make sure that individuals are healthy, safe and integral parts of their communities. While this is a condensed version of what we strive to achieve, our approach to service provision is one that allows us to do this while at the same time integrating innovative programs and phasing out those that no longer meeting the needs of the individuals we serve. There are many opportunities for growth within Southwestern Pennsylvania and when appropriate, we will analyze these ventures from a fiscal and programmatic perspective that seeks to solidify our continuum of care.

I look forward to many successful years with the current leadership team. It is a group that can make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities. It is a group that takes the time to listen to those we serve. It is a group that embraces change and because of that will take Arc Human Services to the next level of service excellence.

SUCCESS STORY: CHERYL & SELF ADVOCACY

Cheryl has been an active member of the Arc Human Services family for many years, utilizing a variety of programs. She lives in one of Arc’s residential homes and enjoys staying busy, working at the Vocational Training Center for over 20 years. In 2015, she completed a peer mentor training program, which focused on learning self-awareness skills, problem solving, self- advocacy and a multitude of other skills to learn how to support and help other individuals. More recently, she has chosen to go out and work within the community and be involved in the community participation service. She carries out what she has learned in her everyday life, by giving advice, feedback and advocating for herself.

Cheryl utilizes her skills every month at Arc’s Self-Advocacy meetings. She believes in speaking up and speaking out to get hers and other’s needs met. Cheryl has attended legislative visits to voice her concerns on transportation, budget issues, employment opportunities and acceptance in the community. She is especially spirited about advocating for her two nephews with autism.

Cheryl is extremely sociable and passionate about Advocacy. She feels everyone should be heard and respected. Cheryl has showcased her “We Belong” photo voice project to raise awareness in the community. When the photos debuted, she was recognized in the Observer-Reporter where she stated, “We want you to see us as persons; not our disabilities.” While sharing the pictures with others, the intention is that the photos will challenge the community to change their views about people with disabilities. Cheryl’s dream is to have safe space, where everyone is welcome to stop in, spend time with each other and build relationships.

Cheryl has recently joined the Self-Advocacy leadership group, where she can continue to develop her skills and help others in the community through training, education and sharing resources. As she passionately states, “We Do Belong!”

SUCCESS STORY: KAMRYN & KYARA AT CAMP

It’s hard to imagine Kamryn and Kyara have been going to Camp Laughalot for 8 years. The twins have greatly benefited from all that has to camp offer. They are socializing and making friends, interacting with peers and establishing relationships with counselors. They participate in multiple activities including swimming and making crafts as well as enjoying entertainment and educational programs both at the campsite and traveling to places that they would not have seen otherwise. Although Kamryn and Kyara are limited in expressing their feelings, they clearly communicate to us that they look forward to every day of camp. Camp Laughalot is an exceptional place where kids with disabilities can go and interact with people and despite their different style of normal can enjoy the benefits typical kids take for granted.

SUCCESS STORY: CHARLIE & MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTED HOUSING

If you would ask Charlie what his favorite thing is, his answer most likely would be two-fold:

1. Working with dogs 2. Playing basketball at Special Olympics

To Charlie, these two activities blend nicely into his weekly Arc schedule and he is more than happy with the results. Charlie, his sister and his grandmother have been involved with the Mental Health Supported Housing Program (MHSHP) for a few years. The family has struggled with financially and with basic housing issues. MHSHP has helped with budgeting, landlord negotiations and housing acquisition. Arc has also assisted Charlie in finding a job.

Charlie works twice a week at the South Hills Pet Rescue. He loves dogs and the dogs love him. According to the owner, Nick Ferrero,” Charlie walks the dogs on a regular basis and talks with each customer about doggie care and health.” He goes on to say, “He is a good worker and very conscientious about his job.” Additionally, he recently opened his first checking account with the money he has made and is saving to purchase Christmas gifts.

Charlie also participated in the Special Olympics Basketball Team this year, playing three on three competition tournaments for the first time. His team won their first ever silver medal and his contribution did not go unnoticed. His coach, Coach Andy, labeled Charlie as a team player, unselfish and determined to win.

Not only did Charlie enjoy participating in these activities, but his teammates, co-workers, friends and family also recognized and supported his achievements.

During his downtime, Charlie enjoys spending time with his Arc workers as they often take him to the movies, out to eat and to church. These activities mean a lot to him and his family, as he might not otherwise get to participate in them.

SUCCESS STORY: JOE & COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

Joe has attended the Arc Vocational Training Center since April 2011. When he first arrived, he worked with a 2:1 employee to individual ratio, but over the years has gradually moved to a 1:6 group. He has blossomed both personally and professionally in his pursuits, participating at the Training Center and in his community. Recently, Arc began the Community Participation program, where individuals are encouraged to spend more time out and about. Joe was unsure if he would enjoy spending more time in the community, but gave it a chance and now he requests to go out more often. Joe has started volunteering at the City Mission every week. His attendance at the Training Center has increased as well as the money he earns and volunteer experience. Through the Community Participation program, Joe has made great strides and continues to grow in all facets of life.

SUCCESS STORY: MARIA & PEER MENTORSHIP

Maria graduated from Greensburg Salem and accepted her diploma with her graduating class.

After high school, Maria independently applied and was accepted to Seton Hill College. She graduated in 1981 with her Bachelor’s degree in Religious Studies and Social Work. Her first job was selling Avon, which she continues to do presently.

After her mother passed away, her brother felt it was best for Maria to stay in a nursing home. After 3 years, she decided it wasn’t the right fit for her and contacted her local commissioner and passionately advocated herself out of the nursing home. Today, Maria lives on her own, with her cat, in an apartment. She has staff that assist her when needed, but a majority of her time is spent working as a mentor, attending trainings and learning new and exciting ways to help others. She is always searching for resources she can share with her peers. From October 2016 through March 2017, Maria worked with 2 high school students from Fort

Education, she was lonely and wanted to make friends. In 1974,

Maria was born in 1955 in Greensburg, where she lived with her parents and 3 siblings. Throughout her youth, her Mom was an advocate for her and wanted to ensure she received every opportunity. Maria’s mother never really followed the rules and didn’t listen to other’s opinions regarding Maria’s success. While she was home-schooled most of her life, and valued her

Cherry. The students created an adaptive device for the computer called the SticKey. The joystick is a device to allow individuals who struggle with fine motor skills type on a keyboard.

Most recently, Maria shares her story with Arc’s new employees during orientation, providing them an opportunity to ask questions and learn more about how to effectively interact with those they will support.

monthly special activities serving 250 individuals of all ages.

The Community Employment service has consistently expanded, now

Sanitary Supply, are becoming more common as community engagement

grows. To date, the Employment Program works with 28 businesses.
