Exercise 5.1b involved studying a pre-existing building designed by a famous architect. I was given The Saynatsalo Town Hall in Finland, designed by architect Alvar Aalto. This exercise required us to really understand the building design and think about what the architect’s intentions were in regards to the way that you experience the space.

EX. 5.1c

Exercise 5.1c asked that we use subtractive model making methods to create a threedimensional section relief model that displays the sequence of spaces leading up to thespace with the most hierarchical importance.

Exercise 5.2 asked us tocombine pieces of our assigned

building with another one to create anew design while also thinking about spatial

characteristics that formed threshold and sequenceas you move through the structure, as well as an intended

program for the spaces. I combined the Saynatsalo Town Hall withZaha Hadid’s Contemporary Arts Center to create a wellness center, complete

with guest living quarters, a large tness room, and a zen garden at the center.

In Exercise 6.1, we were given another building designed by a well-known architect, only this time, the focus was on the vertical facade rather than the interior conditions and sequencethrough the building. We were asked to create our own design using the ideas and techniques seenin the preexisting building that we were given. My inspiration was Leon Battista Alberti’s facade of Sant’Andrea in Mantua, Italy. I decided to take his idea of the perfect square and shift it in dierent directions to create a more three dimensional composition that also brought his idea of thirds into play as well.

Exercise 6.2 required us to use our ideas from the previous iterations and rework them so that they would work with our assigned partner’s models as neighbors.

Section Cut15

Exercise 7 took our precedents from Exercise 6.1 and 6.2 and required us to think about it as an entire building in the heart of Greenwich Village in New York City. We were asked to design an archive that had space for a rare books library, an exhibition space, oces, and the necessary general requirements for a building in the city while maintaining a certain conceptual idea that could be seen throughout the entire building. My idea for my designwas to create a building as a viewing machine for the city.
