Arbor Day 2018 The Sequel.

-Jenn Heaton

Wenley Fergesen got back to me about planting a tree at Park View Middle School. Except it was the week after we'd planted at Edgewood Highland. Wenley's idea was charming though, plant a tree on the front lawn to honor the principal's service to the school. 2017/18 was the last year Mike Crudale was going to be principal.

Rather than tap club funds that were already spent for the year, I switched gears and approached the Dean of Students at PVMS, Ryan Kavanaugh. Mr Kav LOVED the idea, the biggest question was who do I make the check out to?

Bernie Larivee and I took Bernie's tree truck over to Forest Hills to grab a tree just like we'd planted at EHS. Except they were all dead. Bernie worked his magic and got us an even better tree.

I should have said WHOA NO when I saw this tree going into Bernie's truck off the front of a fork truck. BIG rootball.

We procured the tree the day before the planting so we parked it outside the pool deck, which is about 400 ft from where it was going. Took a few gym teachers and the 8th grade girls archery squad to get it out of Bernie's truck. Truckbed had a trail of wet clay and I knew we had a problem in that rootball.

Half hour before planting time, I got a panic call from Wenley that this tree is much larger than expected. Don't freak out, I'll be right there.

We cut the rootball apart, laid down tarps to collect the dirt and started chipping some clay and BRICKS out of the rootball. Wenley procured a hand truck/dolly from building maintenance.

The 8th graders started coming out. The tree was now loaded up on the dolly with Bernie on one side, me on the other and another Mom at the handles.

'Who feels strong?' I asked the kids. 'Let's see who can push this tree the farthest across the field!'

One boy stepped up, ran that tree across the field to the sidewalk. Bernie and I ran along side it. Then I needed a glass of water. Hot that day.

The kids dug a hole ( of course that is my son, Tom Heaton, in the Smokey the Bear RESIST Tee Shirt) and another tree successfully planted in Edgewood. This all happened right before Memorial Day. Friday before Memorial Day, all the students go out on the front lawn for an assembly to honor local veterans. Thursday I received a panicked email from the tree watering committee that our tree was looking wilted. I put forth a plan involving recycled milk jugs and helped along our dear rootwashed tree. In October 2018 after a summer of watering by the tree committee, our sequel tree is strong and well. Yes Park View Middle School has a tree committee. Wenley Fergessen procured many trees from the Rhode Island Tree Council to shade the outdoor classroom.

The Park View Parent Teacher (PVPT) has strong leadership with calendars and documentation that the Tree Council was able to source for a very strong matching grant. As of this writing in October 2018, I have recently taken home 8 trees from the ‘gotta get em in the ground’ back lot at the tree council. John Campeninni (sp) was so pleased with the PVPA’s participation in the tree councils hours for matching grants program.

Bernie with the skinny boy who ran that tree across the field. Don't ever think the skinny boys can't get it done.

Me, helping Vice Principal Kerrilyn Reagan dead wood a rather nice tree on the front lawn. They have good trees at PVMS. Just need a little love and a

strong Tree committee.
