Learning to be an effective networker takes time, education and practice. Awareness is half the battle: if you stop and think about each one of these, youll realize that youve met a lot of people who make these mistakes and undoubtedly some youve done, too. And now the top 10 things to avoid: 1. Acting like “It’s all about me.‘You will get what you want, if you just help others get what they want.’ - Zig Ziglar 2. Going for one-night stands “It’s a lot like digging a well …” Harvey Mackay 3. Being unprepared. Lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.4. Not knowing what you want, or how to ask for it. Do you know how to respond to ‘How can I help you?’ 5. Not having a plan. If you don’t have a plan, networking is sure to disappoint you. Who do you want to meet? Online or in person? Why? Where will you find them? How will you get connected to them? 6. Not managing your network data Hooray! Youve made some grat new connections, and theyre introducing you to their friends. Keeping track of how you met someone (especially if its by referral!) 7. Not saying “Thank you!(This might just be the most important and often overlooked) 8. Not listening! (Interested is interesting! Get curious like a 4-year old.) 9. Not following up (DWYSYWD: Do what you say you will do!) 10. Getting comfortable w/ the folks you already know and staying there. Lets be honest: meeting strangers can be downright scary or at least uncomfortable. Fears about this keep far too many people stuck in their own small network of family and friends. The trouble is, some of your greatest opportunities are probably waiting right outside that circle. If youre not willing to go out there and get them, they WILL pass you by.

Let’s face it: not all networking is created equally! Learning to be an effective networker takes time, education and practice.
