D ear friends and breeders,
The new year is well under way and we are alrea-dy in the most interesting season in Europe – the
foaling season! Everyone is waiting for the foals out of this year’s famous stallions and new stallions, and newcomers out of proven mares, new mares or fillies who are soon to be mares. How exciting it is! On our farm, too, we are waiting to welcome the new family mem-bers while our work for the Arabian Horse Magazine continues wi-thout fail. I am very happy that we have been able to improve our Magazine, issue by issue, and I hope you enjoy our special edition for the International Show in Dubai. The Dubai show is always a fine spectacle, not only because of the show itself, but also because of the unique location and all the wonderful and interesting local farms – which are all a must to be seen!
I wish all our supporters, followers and friends a great start to the new show season which has already started in the Middle East and will continue in Europe very soon. The best of luck to you all and enjoy! I also send best wishes to all those breeders among you who are waiting for their 2015 foals. Good health and security for the new arrivals. We hope you enjoy the new ideas we have included in this new is-sue and the wonderful articles, each of which has been prepared with a lot of feeling and abundant information all about our beloved Arabian Horses.

A horse of exceptional quality

O ur journey continues around the Arab countri-es, and we decided to
visit the Oman. Officially, the Sulta-nate of Oman is an Arab country, on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula. Holding a strategically im-portant position at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the nation is bordered by the United Arab Emirates to the northwest, Saudi Arabia to the west and Yemen to the southwest, and shares marine borders with Iran and Pakistan. The coastline is formed by the Arabian Sea on the southeast and the Gulf of Oman on the northeast.

The Oman is a country full of surprises and is a special historic place. It is a country where you can go into the desert and find the most beauti-ful oasis, but also enjoy the sea and seeing free-living dolphins playing with each other. In Oman, horses in general play an important part in the tradition and culture of the country. In fact, the government provides great support to all types of equestrian activities in general. The Royal Cavalry that is well known in the Arabian horse world, is where we are paying a visit.

The stallion we are going to talk about today is IM BAYARD CATHARE, owned by the Royal Ca-valry. This stallion is a flagship for the managers and staff at the stud, and for his well known handler Franck Cibois who brought him to the breeding and show stables of the Royal Cavalry. IM BAYARD CATHARE was born and bred in France by Mr. Richard Roques, out of the fa-mous Padrons Immage (deceased) owned by the Saudi Prince Khaled Al Khaledia Stud, and Shamila Bagheera, a daughter of Nadir I, a fan-tastic breeding mare. He is a stallion with outstanding qualities of mo-vement and charm, attracting the attention of all the breeders on the world scene. He was also able to capture the crowd at several shows around the world. He won the silver medal at the International Show in Abu Dhabi, the bron-ze medal at the prestigious show in Dubai, the silver medal at Menton in France and another important title, the silver medal, at the European Championships in Verona in 2013. His offspring are following in his footsteps, for example the young stallion Ajlad. We are very impressed by this chestnut stallion and we hope to see him again on one of his new adventures. We wish him all the best and good luck for 2015!

Fontanella Magic Arabians conclu-ded a year of great success with two famous mares and two gold medals winners: the beautiful Magic Ma Cherie and Magic Soubrette, the young promise of the stud and gold medal futurity filly.All the staff, along with the handler Enrico Mearelli, the trainer Angelo Teobaldelli and Sonny, have worked together to reach these great results.Giuseppe Fontanella has been bree-ding his Arabian horses for 25 years. Her pedigree is unique being daughter of world champion and winner of the Triple Crown, BJ THEE MUSTAFA. An amazing mare whose offspring over the years have beco-me champions in their own right and have gained recognition at the most important shows in the world, winning national titles in different continents.Libano is the pride of the Manzi family. From the moment he was born he at-tracted attention; a foal of perfect pro-portions with a long neck and perfect dishy head. The Manzi family immedia-tely saw that the colt had promise and would capture the attention of breeders worldwide. And this is exactly what hap-pened. Just a few months later, nume-rous breeders visited to see this splen-did colt for themselves. One visitor was from one of the most important studs in the world and owner of Libano’s sire AL SHAQAB of the QATAR FOUNDATION. The manager of this stud visited Spole-to in January 2013. In the weeks that followed, numerous other breeders and

well-known European handlers came forward with extremely interesting pro-posals for the Manzi family. Before long, an important offer from another world famous stud – the DUBAI ARABIAN STUD – was put on the table. It was this stud that leased the young Libano.

Fiore all’occhiello dell’allevamento del-la famiglia Manzi, Libano sin da appe-na nato si è subito fatto notare, puledri-no di grande proporzioni, collo lungo e testa camusa. La famiglia Manzi da subito capisce che il puledro si sarebbe fatto strada e avrebbe suscitato inte-ressi tra gli allevatori di tutto il mondo. Così è stato, passano pochi mesi ed arrivano tanti allevatori a vedere que-sto splendido soggetto, tra cui la visita di uno degli allevamenti più importanti al mondo e proprietari del papà di Li-bano, AL SHAQAB di QATAR FUNDA-TION, il cui manager fa visita a Spoleto nel mese di Gennaio 2013. Nelle set-timane a seguire anche numerosi altri allevatori ed handler europei di rilievo avanzano proposte molto allettanti alla famiglia Manzi, ma non troppo tardi arriva i’importante offerta da parte di un’altra scuderia, anche essa tra le più importanti al mondo, DUBAI ARABIAN STUD. Sono proprio loro che prendono il giovane Libano in leasing.

Da qui parte il percorso del giovane pu-ledro, inizia la sua preparazione al cen-tro training I.A.T.C di Paolo Capecci, Susy e Woody.Un grande lavoro di Paolo sul giovane puledro fa si che in pochi mesi, nel set-tembre 2013 fa fare al piccolo Libano il suo debutto allo show B internazionale di città di castello, vincendo la meda-glia d’oro yearling colts. Dopo due mesi partecipa al Campionato Europeo di Verona con risultato altrettanto soddi-sfacente, terzo posto in categoria otte-nendo poi il titolo di top five european champion yearling colts. A distanza di poche settimane partecipa al campio-nato del mondo a Parigi, ed anche li il giovane puledro riesce a piazzarsi nei Top Ten yearling colts ottenendo anche prefenze per le medaglie.
Subito dopo il mondiale parte alla volta di Dubai per la preparazione agli show negli Emirati dove però parteciperà solo all’ International Arabian Horse Fe-stival di Sharjah, vincendo la medaglia di Bronzo Puledri.

A few weeks later he took part in the World Championship in Paris and managed to take a place among the Top Ten Yearling Colts, so obtaining preference for the medals. Immediately after the world cham-pionship, he headed to Dubai to pre-pare for the shows in the Emirates where, however, he was only to take part in the International Arabian Hor-se Festival in Sharjah. He took the bronze medal in the Colt Category.After his experience in the Emira-tes, Libano returned to Europe whe-re he began his reproductive activi-ty covering about 30 mares in Italy alone, and numerous others in Arab countries and the rest of the world. In February 2015 the lease expired with the Dubai Stud; other important offers were forthcoming, including an offer from the AL MAMLKAH Stud owned by HH PRINCE SAUD BINT SULTAN BIN AL SAUD from Saudi Arabia. Libano is on lease to them for one year for reproduction and shows in Arab countries and in Europe.
Dopo la sua esperienza negli Emirati Arabi Libano torna in Europa dove ini-zia la sua attività riproduttiva coprendo circa 30 fatttrici solo in Italia, e nume-rose altre fattrici nei paesi arabi e nel resto del mondo.
Nel febbraio 2015 termina il leasing con la scuderia di Dubai, subito arrivano al-tre proposte molto importanti tra cui quella della scuderia AL MAMLKAH di HH PRICE SAUD BINT SULTAN BIN AL SAUD dell’ Arabia Saudita che prende Libano in leasing per un anno per attivita’ riproduttiva e show nei paesi Arabi ed in Europa.

atrick Wayne Swayze è nato il 18 agosto 1952 a Houston, in Texas, da Patsy Yvon-ne Helen (Karnes) e Jesse Wayne Swayze, lui un ingegniere chimico. Sua madre, co-
reografa. Patsy Swayze, possedeva una scuola di danza a Houston, dove Patrick era anche uno stu-dente. Ha sposato l’attrice / ballerina Lisa Niemi il 12 giugno del 1975, che aveva conosciuto quando aveva 15 anni, studente presso la scuola di danza di sua madre. In primo luogo ha ballato professionalmente come “principe azzurro” in “Disney on Parade”. Aveva un ranch in California, con la moglie Lisa Ni-emi dove avevano numerose fattrici e puledri. Il suo primo cavallo egiziano fu la cavalla Aleenah (Rumi-naja Majed * Talgana).
Suo padre era già un appassionato di cavalli e un cowboy in Texas; Patrick si innamorò dei cavalli ara-bi all’età di 8 anni quando visitò per la prima volta l’allevamento Gleannloch Farm.
Acquistò diversi cavalli dalla Gleannloch Farm e il suo programma di allevamento era basato su que-ste linee. In fine “Legaacy sale”, nel 1992 Lisa ac-quistò le due più belle Fattrici, Bint Atteya (Al Me-trabbi * Atteyah Riyala) nipote della famosa cavalla Bint Mona.L’altra cavalla si chiamava Kahleela (Faleh * Khara-mana) una sorellastra del campione in show Shah Nishan e Ibn Morafic. Entrambi sono stati prodotti da Tammen (Abenhetep * Talgana), quest’ultimo era la vita e l’amore di Patrick.
Questo impressionante stallone chestnut, pieno di potenza e dinamicità, con una personalità formida-bile, non era solo un cavallo; era l’amico più intimo di Patrick Swayze.

He had a ranch in California with his wife Lisa Niemi where they had several mares and foals. His first straight Egyptian horse was the mare Aleenah (Ruminaja Majed * Talgana).
His father was already a horse lover and a cowboy in Texas; Patrick went in love too with the Arabian horses with the age of 8 years when he visited the Gleannloch Farm.
He purchased several hores from the Gleann-loch Farm and his breeding program was ba-sed on these lines. In the final “Legaacy Sale” in 1992 he and Lisa bought the two lovely ma-res Bint Atteya (Al Metrabbi * Atteyah Riyala) she was a granddaughter of the famous Bint Mona mare.
The other mare was named Kahleela (Faleh * Kharamana) a halfsister to the show-winners Shah Nishan and Ibn Morafic. Both of them have been bred to Tammen (Abenhetep * Tal-gana), the lifetime love of Patrick. Patrick e Lisa hanno anche avuto tanto succes-so anche nel mondo degli show di morfologia, sia Tammen, che con una delle sue più belle figlie, Bint Bint Subhaya (Tammen * Bint Subhaya da Ruminaja Majed).Lisa e Patrick si sono goduti il più possibile il tempo nel loro allevamento con i loro cavalli, entrambi ca-valcavano, e si sono goduti tutto il loro tempo sulla schiena dei loro amabili amici cavalli.Nel gennaio del 2008, è stato diagnosticato un can-cro al pancreas, Patrick ha combattuto la malattia per oltre un anno ed era in grado di continuare a lavorare, ma purtroppo è morto il 14 settembre del 2009. Alla sua famiglia, ai suoi amici, manca molto, ma manca tantissimo anche a tutti i suoi fans, ed in ultimo, ma non meno importante, a tutti gli amanti del cavallo arabo in tutto il mondo.

Lisa and Patrick enjoyed a most possible there time at there Farm with there horses and both of them was riders and enjoyed there time over the back of the horses. In January 2008, he was diagnosed with pan-creatic cancer. He fought the illness for well over a year and was able to continue working, but sadly died on September 14, 2009. His fa-mily, his friends, misses him but also all his fan’s and last but not least by the Arabian hor-se lovers all over the world.

- How becomes your interest in the Arabian horse?
- It all started after a ride on the beach of the Belgian coast, with a beautiful grey crabbet mare. Her name was Sertina, she was by Ghibli out of Serinda. It was like I drove a cart, she was quick and easy to ride. Many years later I was still crazy about her and decided to buy her.
- By what did you get interested to judge and what needed you to do to get the permission?
- As a young boy I went to every conformation competition of the Belgian Warm bloods. So I started to read a lot about conformation, movement and legs. At that time I was breeding show jumping horses but that’s 36 years ago. I started with Arabian horses in 1980. So for my interest in good conformation I did my exam to become a judge. That exam was organized for

all breeds by the ministry of agriculture; later on I took the exam organized by the ECAHO.
- How are the duty and the activity of being a judge?
- First of all as a judge you need to have knowledge and be honest. It’s also important to be concentrated when you put all horses in perfect order. In the championships I always ask myself the question; Koenraad you can only take one horse home, which one?
- What is for you the most important point, when you judge a horse?
- The total picture of the overall harmony and the charisma of the horse. After that I start to look to specific characteristics, tail carriage, huge eyes, skin, nice legs and of course the movement is also very important. A horse without movement is not a good horse for me; always keep in mind that a horse must be useful as a riding horse as well.
- If you could change something in the way to judge, what would it be?
- Well this year at the West Coast Cup, we are going to judge the body and top line during the walk around. This is in my opinion the best way to judge that topic. What I really don’t like is that crazy lunging in the
collecting ring, that’s no horsemanship but foolish.
- Which horse you did ever judge impressed you at most?
- It is Pianissima in 2013 in Paris, when she took the Platinum cup. She was just breath-taking beautiful!
- Which positive and negative aspect has it to be a judge?
- Most of the time you spend the time in a kind of isolation. It’s not done to have contact or fun with friends or participants during the show. But normally the organizers are very good hosts at the show. And when you judge in a very good judging panel, we have some nice moments too, especially when we see good horses.
- The world of the Arabian horse shows did change a lot. There are always more less people and participant. As it did also change a lot how the horses are presented as in earlier days. What is for your opinion the reason for this change?
- There are a couple of reasons I think. Of course everything is nowadays in a big change, everything becomes more and more professional and that’s what makes most small breeders think that they have no chance anymore. But in my opinion that’s wrong, because we see a lot of advertisements in magazines

or on the internet but they can be photoshop’ed. People nowadays are also getting better to rate their own quality than 10 years ago. They should not be afraid; when a small breeder has something special they should compete!
- The market for Arabian horses went more and more difficult. What you think need be changed that it can be again interesting and positive market?
- A show competition must have more levels; every horse should start at the lowest level without returning to a lower level. We need perhaps 8 levels.

The fact that the Burj Al Arab (Tower of Arabia, in translation) has even 7 Stars is clear evidence of the eccentric splendor of this magnificent city. It has the unmistakable shape of a sail. Staying in one of the rooms of this great building is not for everyo-ne, but you could just stop by for a tea or a cocktail in the sumptuous Skyview on the 27th floor, to enjoy the glittering lights of Dubai and li-sten to live music. In assoluto l’edificio più alto del mondo, non troverete nulla di più maestoso. 828 m per 124 piani: d’obbligo salire fino in cima e godere della vista mozzafiato che vale metà viaggio a Dubai.Qui troverete anche il Dubai Mall, uno dei centri più importanti per lo shopping.
Nella scala degli hotel non è possi-bile superare le 5 stelle e il fatto che il Burj Al Arab (Torre d’Arabia, nella traduzione) ne abbia addirittura 7 è la prova evidente dello sfarzo eccentri-co di questa magnifica città. Carat-terizzato dall’inconfondibile forma a vela. How did you started with Arabian horse?
My story with Arabian horse began quite long time ago. I was still studying when a friend of mine who was breeder of Akhal-Teke horses introduced me his friend, Arabian horse breeder.
As they both were closely cooperating together I got soon a chance to meet this unique breed and very quickly fell in love with Arabian horse.They just enchanted me with their beauty, charisma and communication skills. Once I rode them I realized that this was a horse breed I would love to have. After my studies I got an offer to become manager of the farm with more than 20 Arabian horses and I immediately agreed.
What did you do with these horses on the farm?
At that time we were not only breeding horses there but we were also one of those few in our country who initiated Arabian horse racing and showing. For racing I trained our horses by myself as professional trainers had no experience with Arabians. Thanks to my Executive Secretary possition in our association

I was also later involved in the establishement of our own Racing regulations that were finally approved by the governmental bodies. Thanks to this success, Arabian races could be organized at the official Jockey Club race-tracks and our horses could be already at that time ridden by professional riders with Jockey Club licenses. In the year 2000 our association finally accepted Jockey Club rules and was able to organize around 8 big races per year. Unfortunately, in autumn 2003 we were forced to close our national Arabian racing scene due to the lack of horses in the training.
How did you start with shows organizations?
Our association started with shows year or two before racing and on the beginning we were only participating with our own horses. At that time the show was organized on fields of private farms and the judges were selected from the National Warmblood horses´ judges´ list. I remember that there was a lot of fun as everybody arrived with just one or two horses which were shown by owners themselves. Few years after, in the office of ACHPAK CR (Czech Arabian Horse Association), I became responsible for show organization and I realized that we should probably upgrade it to higher level. Being already few years member of ECAHO we decided to organize our National show in 1999 for the first time under ECAHO regulations. We also used at that year for the first time the indoor arena of National Stud in Pisek and the show was just a great success. Since then I have been able to organize already 13 national and 4 international shows under ECAHO rules.

Back to your own horses, when did you purchase your own Arabian horse?
Oh yes, I bought our first own Arabian horse in 2000. It was at the time we finally split with my friend and I bought weaned colt from old classic Straight Egyptian lines. His dam was the last living daughter of Kasr El Nil in our country and the sire was grandson of Morafic. We still have this stallion at home and I have to say he is my most favorite horse for riding. I call him familiarly “Aristocrat” for his great character and perspective. I actually used to breed Straight Egyptians already before as there were all Straight Egyptian horses on the farm of my friend. Most of them were based on the herd of horses bred in the National Stud in Topolcianky (previously Czechoslovakia) where 10 horses were imported from El Zahra Stud in 1973. Shortly after purchase of our colt we decided together with my wife to buy two mares (half-sisters from Obeyah strain). One is by Mahadin (by Madkour I) and the second one by Ibn Farasha (by Farazdac). Later we kept from our own breeding next two fillies which are already mares now. One is the grand-daughter of my favorite stallion Ashal Al Rayan and the second one is daughter of Royal Colours. We also own one Pinto mare which we cross with Arabian stallions. With her we are also very satisfied beause as a result of last cross she gave us beautiful filly which will probably stay with us too.

How is it possible that we do not see your horses in the showrings?
Well, I do sometimes show horses in our national competitions because it is needed in our country to let them in the Studbook but it is not that simple for me to bring our horses to shows which I do organize. The same is with international shows where we are not participating due to my position in ECAHO. In fact this keeps me out of any conflict of interest and plus our horses can enjoy their pastures at home. But this may be changed soon...
We have heard about your new arrival from Australia...Tell us bit more about.
Yes, it is true. Last year when me with my wife visited Australia we got a chance to visit the Simeon Stud close to Sydney. I have heard a lot about their breeding program and their horses, however, all what I saw there exceeded my expectations. We came just to see their horses without any intention to buy any of them but after the tour guided by the owner Mrs. M. Richmond I was amazed by the type, correctness, character and charisma of Simeon horses. Among all this perfection I found young Straight Egyptian colt which we really liked and which seemed to us very promising for our mares. In addition, our feeling was supported by the perfection of both parents of this colt so we just fell in love with him. Later on when leaving the farm I was told about the chance to purchase this colt so we did not hesitate any minute and made an almost immediate decision. After all procedures our colt with the name Simeon Sohaar (Simeon Shifran by Asfour, out of Simeon Sanaa by Imperial Madaar) arrived at the end of January 2015 to Europe. We plan to start breeding with him very soon but before we would like to bring him this year just to few shows to prove his great qualities. I hope he will be found very useful also to other breeders and will help them to improve their breeding programs. There are already now few requests for his breedings so I really believe he will attract lot of people.
Can you tell us finally what are your breeding goals?
As breeders of Straight Egyptian horses I would like to keep our horses Straight and for sure typey, with huge eyes, very good character, amazing movement and correct legs and body..... Simply said “ideal horse”. Somebody can say that everybody wants the same but I think that this is absolutely correct because until we have a vision (which can be completely different for each other) we should follow it...

T ogether with Kuwait Ministry of Culture Arts and Letters and the Slovenian Embassy, Alenka held expo LOVE IN US in Kuwait’s
Modern Art Museum on February 2014, attended by the Mi-nister of Information, SH Salman Al Sabah, and Mr Yachi the Minister of Culture and Ambassador Robert Kokalj. The expo was later moved to the prestigious Kuwait Mall, Prestige in The Avenues. Alenka succeeded in her vision to bring an Arab horse from Almeshal into the mall and took stunning photos, documen-ting her conviction that Arab horses are the greatest treasures, which, as such, are to be presented in the finest setting in the world. The exhibition LOVE IN US is love story between Arab mare and Arab stallion – mare comes out of desert stallion out of the sea. Ocean they meet on the shore, kiss and have filly named Timeless love, who symbolized Arab horse blood around the world since almost in any horse somewhere down the line is connection with Arab horse. The ocean connects all the nations through the loving waves that lap up on our shores. Lipizzaners, themselves, were bred by Arab and Spanish horse 435 years ago in Lipica Stud farm in Slovenia.

T anagra was cele-brating The Year of the Horse under the
patronage of Sheikh Ameer Alfahad Al Sabah in Kuwait at The Grand Avenues on March 2014 with an inspired new collection COLORS OF MY SOUL by Alenka SLAVINEC, which captured the spirit of one horse from Alsedirawi Farm, frolicking in the sea.
Alenka’s passion for horse photography will be brought this September, 2015 to an outdoor expo for the Bretton Wo-ods IV Convocation. Arab, Amish, and sacred Native American horses will be present at the Convocation. The Lipizza-ner horses will also be invited. The expo will open with a musical composition by Slovenian composer Žan Tetičkovič, specially commissioned for the Convo-cation.
OTHER Alenka’s first outdoor photo expo, PLEčNIK SIMPHONY OF KRIŽANKE in Slovenia for 60 years of the Festival Lju-bljana was for 3 months on 120 billbo-ards in the capital city. This year Alenka published the book I AM A DONOR by Tea Gajšek, the true story by mother about her daughter, who has twice received lung transplants. Alenka has been active in film industry since 2008, when she independently produced the documentary on Slovenia’s celebrated photographer Stojan Kerbler, “The World Didn’t Know He Landed in a Poem.” The documentary was followed by projects at New York’s Film Academy, Film Festivals, co-produced with Emmy Award Winner, Ashley Colburn Wonders of Slovenia. She is in pre-production of the movie based on book The Lord of Cat Bow by Stuart -Sinclair Weeks and is collaborating on the film, Riders on the Storm about Green Peace.

I t was a wonderful sunny day when we started our trip from Italy to the wonderful Italian
part of Switzerland named Ticino, where we went to the farm Harem stud of Ma-nuela Lucini. It is placed especially in the little village Viglio from the region “Col-lina d’Oro” or in “English Golden Hill”, which is only 2km away form the amazing and well-known city Lugano. We went to see Manuela for one special reason and the name of this reason is “H” Glamours an exotic straight egyp-tian young black stallion with a fantastic pedigree. His father is the famous Royal Colours (Ture Colours * Xtreme Wonder) who was two times Wold Champion in Paris and champion stallion in Dubai, who is himself a legend and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. The mother of him one beautiful black mare with the name Galila (Coaltwon * UP Bint Monta-ha) has also a wonderful pedigree behind going back to the famous Ruminaja Ali. She is a wonderful mare but also well ridden under saddler that shows also her great character. Glamours himself has a very exotic short head with a well sated neck and a lot of movement, he did im-press us a lot with his presence and atti-tude – he is also very charming and not shay to as for a cares.
He is starting now he’s career as a bree-ding stallion and will be this year the first time available. So we wish to him and all the breeders will start to belive in him good luck for one interesting future.For any future information please contact Manuela Lucini.

How and when did your passion for the world of horses (specially Arabians) and morphology start? A. For as long as I can remember, my parents have always had Arabian horses. So automatically I grew up with them and was bitten by love for the Arabian horse! Q. Do you still remember your first show?
A. My first show must have been when I was about 3 years old or so. My favorite show as a child was the All Nations Cup in Aachen. I sat there 2 full days admiring the horses and the

Come e quando è nata la tua passione per il mondo dei cavalli (specialmente quelli arabi) e della morfologia? A. Per quel che posso ricordare, i miei genitori hanno sempre avuto cavalli arabi. Così automaticamente sono cresciuto con loro e sono stato colpito dall’amore per il cavallo arabo!
Q. Ti ricordi ancora la tua prima mostra?
A. La mia prima mostra deve essere stata quando avevo circa 3 anni o giù di lì. La mia mostra preferita da bambino era la All Nations Cup ad Aachen. Mi sono seduto lì 2 giorni completi ammirando i cavalli e il pubblico.

audience. Q. Do you miss the shows back in those days or do you prefer the atmosphere we have today?
A. For sure like it was back then there was more atmosphere and fun. The arenas were bigger as there was no VIP area. Horses moved a lot better and there was always more excitement for the audience. Q. How did you expand your theoretical and practical knowledge about handling and training show horses?
A. I have always had advice from my father who told me to use my eyes well. At every show I was to be found in the collecting ring watching the handlers doing their thing. Later, I went to quite a few different handlers to learn from them, explore new ideas and techniques, etc. Q. Why did you decide to train Arabian horses?
A. I have always been around Arabians and enjoy handling them. I just rolled into this world... Q. Are you also a breeder?
Q. Ti mancano le mostre di quei giorni o preferisci l’atmosfera che si respira oggigiorno?
A. Di sicuro per come erano allora, c’era più atmosfera e divertimento. Le arene erano più grandi e non c’era alcuna area VIP. I cavalli si muovevano molto meglio e c’era sempre un entusiasmo maggiore tra il pubblico.
Q. Come hai fatto ad ampliare le tue conoscenze teoriche e pratiche sull’addestramento e l’allenamento dei cavalli da mostra?
A. Ho sempre avuto consigli da mio padre, che mi ha detto di usare bene gli occhi. Ad ogni mostra mi trovavo sull’arena a guardare gli handler mentre facevano il loro lavoro. Più tardi, sono andato da almeno un paio di loro per imparare, esplorare nuove idee e tecniche, etc.
Q. Perché hai deciso di addestrare i cavalli arabi?
A. Sono sempre stato in mezzo ai cavalli arabi e mi piaceva maneggiarli. Mi sono praticamente lanciato dentro questo mondo...
Q. Sei anche un allevatore?
A. Sì, insieme con la mia ragazza Eline Raes possediamo diversi cavalli. L’allevamento è una passione e ci diverte tanto, sebbene cerchiamo di tenerlo su scala bassa.
Q. Qual è la linea di sangue che ti piace di più? Ed il motivo?

A. Yes, together with my girlfriend Eline Raes we own a handful of horses. Breeding is a passion and so much fun, but we try to keep it on a low scale though. Q. Which is the blood line that you like the most? And the reason why?
A. I used to prefer Egyptians, for their refinement and expression. In some cases, though, they lack the extra touches that we need nowadays for the show scene. I can admire every bloodline and I think each line has its advantages. Q. In which country did you find a better quality show from an organizational point of view?
A. We do have many shows of very good quality in Belgium from an organizing point of view. Shows like the Elran Cup, the Bruges Cup, the EEE in Lanaken, to name a few, are shows where things need to be organized in great detail. But everywhere there are good shows. Of course also everywhere there are less interesting or entertaining shows... Q. Is there any victory you feel closest to?
A. Preferisco i cavalli egiziani, per la loro eleganza e la loro espressione. In alcuni casi, però, essi mancano di quei tocchi extra di cui abbiamo bisogno oggigiorno per la scena delle mostre. Posso ammirare ogni linea di sangue e penso che ogni linea ha i suoi vantaggi.
Q. In quale paese hai trovato una mostra di qualità migliore da un punto di vista organizzativo?
A. Facciamo molte mostre di ottima qualità in Belgio da un punto di vista organizzativo.Mostre come la Coppa Elran, la Coppa Bruges, il EEE a Lanaken, per citarne alcune, sono mostre in cui le cose devono essere organizzate in modo molto dettagliato. Ma ovunque nel mondo ci sono buone mostre. Naturalmente ci sono anche mostre meno interessanti o divertenti in tutto il mondo...
Q. C’è qualche vittoria a cui ti senti più vicino?
A. Riuscire ad ottenere tutto il possibile da un cavallo all’interno del ring è già un grande risultato. Penso che ogni addestratore sogna il titolo mondiale in qualche modo, ma dobbiamo essere felici per il privilegio di essere in grado di far esibire tutti questi cavalli eccellenti in tutte quelle mostre. Vederli fare tutto quello di cui sono capaci è per me già una sorta di vittoria.
Q. Dal tuo punto di vista, qual è il criterio più difficile

A. To get everything possible out of a horse in the ring is already a great achievement. I think every trainer dreams about the world title somehow, but we have to be happy with the priviledge of being able to represent these fine horses in all those shows. To see them doing all they can is for me already a kind of a victory. Q. From your point of view, which is the most difficult criterion to judge?
A. I think ‘legs’ is a very hard point to judge as there is not much time. The surface they stand on is not always even in order to have an objective point of view. Q. What advice would you give to those who approach the world of the thoroughbred Arabian horse for the first time?
A. To go visit as many farms, breeders, trainers, shows, etc. as possible in order to get a good idea of what you want. Be very critical and let yourself be guided by knowledgeable people. Q. What has changed over the years since your first show?
A. Of course the quality of horses has developed. The Middle East impact has led to higher standards. The best horses from

A. Penso che ‘le gambe’ siano un punto molto difficile da giudicare perché non c’è molto tempo. La superficie di appoggio non è sempre uniforme in modo da avere un punto di vista obiettivo.
Q. Che consiglio daresti a chi si avvicina al mondo del cavallo arabo purosangue per la prima volta?
A. Di andare a visitare e incontrare il più possibile allevamenti, allevatori, handler, spettacoli, ecc., al fine di ottenere una buona idea di ciò che si desidera. Essere molto critici e lasciarsi guidare da persone competenti.
Q. Cosa è cambiato nel corso degli anni dalla tua prima mostra?
A. Naturalmente la qualità dei cavalli è cresciuta. L’impatto del Medio Oriente ha portato a standard più elevati. I migliori cavalli provenienti da allevatori europei sono stati venduti in Medio Oriente, il che significa che diventa sempre più difficile per gli allevatori europei competere ai massimi livelli!
Q. Diventare un handler... È un sogno nascosto o una coincidenza di vita?
A. E ‘sempre stata una mia passione, ma ci sono entrato dentro lentamente. È solo il mio terzo anno come handler a tempo pieno ...non ho rimpianto di aver preso questa decisione, nemmeno per un momento...
Q. Esiste una particolare simbiosi tra hanbdler e cavallo?
A. Ogni persona ha un debole per determinati cavalli. Che si tratti del loro carattere o della loro qualità eccezionale.
Q. Che cosa c’è di così speciale nel cavallo arabo?
A. L’espressione che hanno nei loro occhi; le orecchie e le narici. Il trasporto della coda. La fierezza; il loro portamento è veramente unico rispetto ad altre razze. E soprattutto, la loro intelligenza!
Q. Quali sono le tue aspettative per il prossimo futuro?
A. In realtà non ho aspettative ma ho sogni e obiettivi. Lavorerò sodo con la mia squadra per raggiungere quei sogni e obiettivi...
Q. Qual è la tua giornata tipo?
A. Aiutare il mio staff con la routine quotidiana nella scuderia. Ho messo la parola lavoro di squadra come un fattore molto importante per avere una buona collaborazione e spirito di squadra nella scuderia!
Q. Tra tutti i cavalli che ti sono stati affidati, qual è quello che ti ha fatto impegnare maggiormente?
A. Di sicuro un cavallo come Al Khatab Al Thani è molto vicino al mio cuore; l’ho fatto esibire fin dall’inizio della sua

A. It has always been a passion of mine but I slowly rolled into it. It’s only my third year as a full time horse trainer... I haven’t regretted making this decision for a moment... Q. Is there any particular symbiosis between handler and horse?
A. Every person has a soft spot for certain horses. Whether it’s because of their character or their extreme quality. Q. What is so special about the Arabian horse?
A. The expression they have in their eyes; their ears and nostrils. The tail carriage. The proudness; how they can carry themselves is very unique compared with other breeds. And most of all, their intelligence! Q. What are your expectations for the near future?
A. I don’t really have expectations but I have dreams and goals. I will work hard with my team to reach those dreams and goals... Q. What is your typical day?
A. Helping my staff with the daily routine in the barn. I put the word Teamwork as a very important factor in order to have a good collaboration and team spirit in the barn! Q. Among all the horses that you have been entrusted with, which is the one you have been most committed to?
A. For sure a horse like Al Khatab Al Thani is very close to my heart; I have shown him since the beginning of his career and together we have achieved in my opinion some impressive results! Q. Among the horses you have shown, is there any particular bloodline that you feel more trainable than the others, or does it depend on the horse?
A. I would say it depends more on the way they are built. It’s easier to school a horse that is built to pose and has a good shoulder, is upright and above all has the mind for it!

A. Direi che dipende più dal modo in cui sono strutturati. E‘ più facile addestrare un cavallo che è strutturato per mettersi in posa e ha una buona spalla, è eretto e, soprattutto, ha l’intelligenza per farlo!
Q. C’è un cavallo a cui sei particolarmente affezionato?
A. Come ho detto sopra, Al Khatab Al Thani è uno di loro. Ma questo è più da un punto di vista emotivo. Ci sono così tanti cavalli che hanno avuto un forte impatto su di me, ma diciamo che ho grande rispetto per un cavallo come Marwan Al Shaqab per quanto ha fatto per la razza ...
Q. Qual è il tuo messaggio agli allevatori?
A. Di essere molto critici nel loro programma d’allevamento. Di essere abbastanza aperti da capire le cose positive e quelle negative in ognuno dei loro cavalli. E di vedere la qualità sopra la quantità!

H db Shir Ibn Massai was born in 2007 and was bred by Hilke Debriker out of Massai Ibn Marenga, owned by the Darius family from Germany, and Mayna, a beautiful daughter out of BJ Thee Mustafa.
While still very young, he gained important recognition winning titles like Champion at the Interna-tional B in Marina di Pietrasanta and the International event in Milan in 2009, in the hands of Paolo Capecci. Later, at the European Championship in Verona, he won Bronze Medal behind two world champions Abbha Qatar owned by Prince Abbdullah of Almomadia and Shangai EA from the pre-stigious Ajman Stud owned by Sheikh Ammar.
Woody was completely taken by this horse at the Erlan Cup Show in Belgium and from that mo-ment he couldn’t leave him, even though after a brief period of breeding in Italy at the premature age of two he was leased to Poland into the care of a dear friend Tomasz Tarczynski where he had a successful breeding season in both numbers and quality.
After a very brief period of time back in Italy, and thanks to two friends Simone Leo and Zico Guardia, he left for Brazil to stay at the prestigious Haras Cruzeiro Stud owned by two dear people Leandro and Andre who up to today have taken excellent care of him and treated him as one of the family. During his first year in Brazil he won the title of Brazilian Champion in the Young Stallion Catego-ry and during his second year there he won the title of Brazilian Champion in the Senior Stallion Category and Champion at the show in Araxa: three shows, three gold medals for this young and promising stallion in the hands of the famous handler Dejair Souza.

Tornato in Italia dopo un brevissimo periodo grazie a due amici Simone Leo e Zico Guardia e’ partito alla volta del Brasile presso la prestigiosa scuderia Haras Cruzeiro di Proprieta di due care persone Leandro ed Andre che fino ad oggi ne hanno preso cura in modo eccellente come un conponente della loro famiglia. Durante questa sua permanenza in Brasile si aggiudica il primo anno il titolo di Campione stallone Nazionale brasiliano giovani stalloni e il secondo anno campione nazionale Brasiliano senior stallion, nonche cam-pione allo show di Araxa, tre show tre medaglie d’oro per questo giovane e promettente stallone nelle mani del famoso handler Dejair Souza.

In Brazil his daughter CARISSIMA LA was nominated Brazilian National Champion Junior Filly and one of his sons CARINGA LA won the category with the highest points for colts, again at the Brazilian National Championship.

first and foremost Fieracavalli Verona and the historical Vetreria Valeri (a lo-cal glass producer) that supplied the beautiful handmade crystal trophies, Mrs. Piera Martellozzo with her divi-ne sparkling wines, Autopiù car sa-les, the United Arabian Stud Egypt, Turismo FVG, Brugman Arabians Belgium, The Language Club and many, many others.Press releases were forthcoming and the Festival was mentioned in numerous daily papers (ie the Gazzettino, the Messaggero), lo-cal television programmes and the Domenica Sport magazine, and the dedicated Facebook page rea-ched almost 2000 likes in just a few months. Our Festival press editor Piergiorgio Grizzo is already warming up for the second edition and new articles will soon be published.Last year, participants and guests were welcomed on the Friday eve-ning with a cocktail party offered by Pordenone’s Women in the World of Wine and Del Ben Cheeses in a delightful setting in the grounds of the venue. Live music was played by saxophonist Bruno del Ben accom-panied by the well-known DJ Marco Lucchini. During the party Mrs. Laura Mascagna gave a magical presenta-tion of the Arabian Horse and its hi-story to the awe and enthusiasm of the guests.

Mario Bono-mi. L’insostituibile voce era quella della dott.ssa Laura Mascagna che non solo ha accompagnato lo show, ma anche l’aperitivo di benvenuto e la serata di galà del sabato sera. Serata a detta di tutti indimenticabi-le, svoltasi attorno alla piscina della struttura Gelindo dei Magredi. Lun-ghe tovaglie bianche, lume di cande-le, danzatrici del ventre, musica live ed un cielo stellato hanno accompa-gnato la cena degli ospiti presenti …. ammaliati poi da una parata stalloni a sorpresa. Sfilando nel sottostante viale contornato da tigli e giungendo fino al prato accanto ai tavoli appa-recchiati a festa, sotto i flash delle macchine fotografiche e gli sguardi increduli dei presenti, il purosangue arabo ha messo gli zoccoli nei ma-

Spazio per dimostrazioni montate sia all’in-glese che all’americana. Non man-cherà la serata di galà e l’ormai tanto attesa parata stalloni.

A space will also be dedicated to pre-sentations of English and American style riding. And of course breath will be held for the Gala Evening and what it holds in store! I l mio primo incontro con il caval-lo arabo è stato un amore a pri-ma vista. Nessun’altra creatura
è in grado di darmi più ispirazione ed emozione per la mia arte.Venti anni fa ho deciso di dedicare la mia attività pittorica ai cavalli arabi, oltre che ai dipinti e ai ritratti di cani. Il fascino, l’eleganza e la nobiltà nella razza del arabo cavallo sono qual-cosa di unico, e l’importante patri-monio culturale alla base di questa razza è così notevole,e questo è un altro fattore che mi ha guidato verso un forte desiderio di esplorare più a fondo questa razza, per essere sem-pre più coinvolta in questa attività pittorica.Ritrarre i cavalli arabi non è un com-pito facile, tanto studio, dedizione, esercizio e una forte passione sono necessari al fine di ottenere buoni risultati. Io amo rappresentare i ca-valli arabi, il modo in cui realmente essi sono, senza esagerare i carat-teri principali della razza, mostran-do l’eleganza, rispettando la com-binazione perfetta di elementi che creano un cavallo meraviglioso con un’eccellente capacità di resistenza, un bellissimo cavallo, ma anche un cavallo funzionale, ed il mio stile di pittura realistico richiede molta cura per raggiungere questo obiettivo.Le mie tecniche di pittura preferite sono i colori ad olio classici su ta-vola, tela o carta - acquerello e una tecnica mista di acquerello-tempera, poi il metodo basilare di disegnare con matita grafite o matite idroso-lubili utilizzando una tecnica eterea essenziale,che si adatta perfetta-mente alla bellezza ‘eterea’ del ca-vallo arabo. Mi piace dipingere lo studio della testa dei cavalli,così come il loro intero corpo, anche se

Twenty years ago I have decided to dedicate my painting activity to Arabian Horses in addition to dogs pain-tings and portraits. Painting under commission is the biggest part of my work and also the most challenging one but I do love also portray ‘fantasy’ horses does it mean, the model of Ara-bian Horse I have in my mind, the one representing my personal ideal of ARABIAN HORSE BE-AUTY. Over these twenty years of painting activity I had also the honor to cooperate with Shows Organizers providing original tro-phies for the Championship clas-ses, would like to mention in this respect the World Championship Show for Straight Egyptians orga-nized in Rome during the month of October.For an artist it is imperative to im-prove, to refine both the techni-que side but also the emotional side of his-her work, nice words of appreciation by my clients/friends assured me that I have reached over the years a very good level of quality, a maturity as far as style, soul and feeling are concerned but there is always always way to improve, to develop new techni-ques to experiment something new but always in the respect of this wonderful breed and my ‘per-sonal’ style.The Arabian Horse is an endless source of inspiration for me, a vi-sion of beauty, a vision of perfec-tion, a joy for eyes and soul!

H orses endurance races are particularly numerous and popular nowdays in
all countries of the world and they represent one of the most valid test to evaluate the physical, mental and athletic qualities of a horse.Among these competitions are counted,in particular addressing to the Arabian horse, the endurance races that are held with varying distances from 30 to 120 km in a maximum time limit.Among these races that affect other breeds of horses,and which are also allowed at the Olympic Games,there is a complete contest that provides a fund test in the countryside,in addition to a test of dressage and hurdle jumping, especially this type of competition is one in which a horse must demonstrate its training, obedience, nervous concentration, physical endurance, athletic power and muscle coordination.The horses participating in so chal-lenging races may experience meta-bolic disorders,if they have not been preliminarily subjected to intensive training programs and periodic vete-rinarian checks,diseas such as those represented in the epigraph that will be the subjects of our article.

L e gare di resistenza dei cavalli, oggi sono particolar-mente numerose e popolari
in tutti i paesi del mondo e rappre-sentano uno dei test più validi per valutare le qualità fisiche atletiche e psichiche di un cavallo.Tra queste gare sono annoverate per quanto riguarda soprattutto il cavallo arabo le gare di endurance che si disputano con distanze va-riabili dai 30 ai 120 km in un tempo massimo stabilito.Tra queste gare che interessano altre razze di equidi e che sono ammesse anche ai giochi Olimpici ricordiamo il concorso completo che oltre a una prova di dressage e di salto ostacoli prevede una prova di fondo di campagna, in particolar modo questo tipo di competizione è quella nella quale un cavallo deve dare prova di addestramento, ob-bedienza, concentrazione nervosa, resistenza fisica, potenza atletica e coordinazione muscolare.I cavalli che partecipano a gare cosi impegnative se non sono stati preli-minarmente sottoposti a programmi di allenamento intensivo e controlli clinici periodici medico veterinario possono manifestare delle altera-zioni metaboliche come quelle rap-presentate in epigrafe che saranno oggetto della nostra esposizione.

The degree of dehydration usually depends on envi-ronmental factors such as temperature and humidity, and by factors related to the degree and the type of work performed, in fact it has been established that in some types of competitions,such as those of en-durance, a horse can lose from 15kg to 40/50 kg of pv.A horse that exercises needs usually amounts of energy from ten to twenty times higher than those needed to rest, valued in 3000 / 6000kcal / hr, this energy is provided in the most part from the use of sugars and organic lipids, and during this reaction they are generated large amounts of heat; this heat is removed through various types of physical and bio-logical mechanisms but in the horse is the evapora-tion of sweat the main source of heat loss.This mechanism is affected by various factors such as the body surface, the thickness of the coat, the at-mospheric pressure, the environmental temperature, the humidity and the wind.The sweat is mainly composed of water and certain salts such as Cl, Na, K, Ca (chlorine, sodium, potas-sium and calcium) and in very small amounts of Mg.The main salt that is dissipated is the sodium and it is associated to the decrease of the volume of organic liquids, it creates an involvement of the cardio va-scular structures, reducing the amount of liquids that reach the peripheral tissues and blocking the renal function, all this creates variable clinical symptoms depending on the severity of dehydration,affecting the eyes that appear sunken and the cornea which is more or less dry, the mouth is more or less dry and

C on tale termine si indica comune-mente un deficit di liquidi ed elettroliti dell’organismo che si verifica in se-
guito ad un intenso e protratto lavoro. Il grado di disidratazione dipende solitamente da fattori ambientali come temperatura e umidità e da fattori relativi al grado e al tipo di lavoro svolto, si è infatti dimostrato che in alcuni tipi di com-petizione come quelle di endurance un cavallo può perdere dai 15kg di pv ai 40/50 kg pv.Un cavallo che svolge un esercizio fisico ha ne-cessità solitamente di quantità di energia dalle dieci alle venti volte superiori di quelle neces-sarie al riposo, valutate in 3000/6000kcal/ora ,questa energia è fornita nella massima parte da l’utilizzo degli zuccheri e dei lipidi organi-ci generando durante questa reazione grandi quantità di calore; tale calore viene eliminato attraverso vari tipi di meccanismi sia fisici che biologici ma nel cavallo è l’evaporazione del sudore la principale fonte di dispersione ter-mica. Tale meccanismo è condizionato da vari fattori come la superficie corporea, la foltezza del pelo la pressione atmosferica la temperatu-ra ambientale l’umidità e la ventosità.Il sudore è principalmente composto da acqua e da alcuni Sali come il Cl, Na, k, Ca (cloro, so-dio, potassio e calcio ) e in piccolissime quan-tità di Mg.Il principale sale che viene dissipato è il sodio e associato alla diminuzione del volume dei liqui-di organici crea un coinvolgimento delle strut-ture cardio vascolari con riduzione della quan-tità di liquidi che raggiungono i tessuti periferici e blocco della funzionalità renale, tutto ciò crea una sintomatologia clinica variabile a seconda del grado di gravità della disidratazione inte-ressando gli occhi che si presentano infossati e con cornea più o meno secca, la bocca si presenta più o meno secca e fredda il sensorio appare depresso e l’emissione di urina ridotta, notevole è la sensazione di sete nel cavallo .I cavalli con grave disidratazione devono es-sere abbeverati con piccole e frequenti dosi di acqua ma soprattutto utilizzando soluzioni elettrolitiche bilanciate come quella di cloruro di sodio (Na Cl) e Ringer lattato in quantità va-riabile in base ai liquidi persi dall’animale.

If there are no other disease states, the CSD is ge-nerally the epiphenomenon of a metabolic imbalan-ce «not serious» that can become a danger for the life of the horse if it will be underestimated.The CSD can also occur early even in the early sta-ges of the work regardless of age, sex and type of training.Clinical examination will detect the unilateral or bila-teral contraction of the region of the hips.The conditions of hypocalcemia and hypokalemia and alkalosis, accumulated during the work days, can cause the emergence of this pathology in the horse, even during the initial stages of work; this disease disappears in an absolutely spontaneous way with the rest of the horse,keeping it away from stressful situations, in association with the admini-stration of electrolyte solutions.

T his multi factorial metabolic syndrome is observed in horses who are forced to work beyond their organic limits; the emergence of
the disease is linked to environmental predisposing factors such as temperature, humidity, wind, training, race course, which are associated with sweating and loss of fluids and electrolytes.Clinical examination will detect dehydration, hyper-thermia, anorexia, depression.Examination of the circulatory system presents ta-chycardia with tachypnea, hypotension, cyanotic mucous and jugular wrist.The muscles ache with tremors and spasms, pain is especially significant to the muscles of the buttocks,affecting the gastrointestinal system which manifests the disappearance of bowel sounds until the emergence of colics.In theory, this disease affects horses that show a re-duced resilience after a race or a training, with a he-art rate greater than 80 beats after 30 minutes, and a respiratory rate greater than 40 breaths.All is here also due to an alteration of the concen-trations of calcium, chlorine, potassium, sodium, magnesium, which produces an alteration of the muscular transmission, cardiac arrhythmia, muscle cramps.The therapy is identical to that of the other treated diseases, being this syndrome with an expression of symptoms similar but more severe than the others, so fluid therapy with ringer lactate,solutions with so-dium chloride, glucose solutions to promote energy input readily assimilated, oral rehydration, complete rest and cold showers on the limbs, to regulate the hyperthermia.

Q uesta sindrome metabolica pluri fat-toriale si osserva in cavalli che ven-gono costretti a lavorare oltre i loro
limiti organici la comparsa è legata a fattori am-bientali predisponenti come temperatura, umi-dità, ventosità, allenamento percorso di gara ai quali si associa la sudorazione e la perdita di liquidi ed elettroliti.All’esame clinico i soggetti interessati presen-tano disidratazione, ipertermia, anoressia, de-pressione .All’esame dell’apparato circolatorio si presenta tachicardia con tachipnea, ipotensione muco-se cianotiche e polso giugulare.I muscoli si presentano dolenti con tremori e con spasmi, notevole dolore soprattutto alle masse arsa dei glutei, a carico dell’apparato gastroenterico si presenta la scomparsa dei borgorigmi intestinali fino alla presenza di co-lica. In linea teorica tale patologia colpisce quei cavalli che dopo una gara o un allenamento mostrano una ridotta capacità di recupero con una frequenza cardiaca dopo 30 minuti supe-riore ad 80 battiti, e una frequenza respiratoria superiore ai 40 atti respiratori.Il tutto è dovuto anche qui ad una alterazione delle concentrazioni di calcio, cloro, potassio sodio, magnesio che danno luogo ad una al-terazione della trasmissione muscolare, aritmia cardiaca, crampi muscolari.La terapia è identica a quella delle patologie trattate essendo questa sindrome con un’e-spressione sintomatologica simile ma più gra-ve delle altre, quindi fluido terapia con ringer lattato soluzioni con cloruro di sodio, soluzioni glucosate per favorire un apporto di energia prontamente assimilabile reidratazione per via orale riposo assoluto e docce fredde agli arti onde controllare l’ipertermia.

All’esame clinico si rileva la contrazione della regione del fianco unilaterale o bilaterale. Le condizione di ipocalcemia e ipokaliemia ed alcalosi accumulatesi nei giorni di lavoro pos-sono essere causa nel cavallo della comparsa di questa patologia anche durante le fasi iniziali del lavoro tale patologia si risolve in modo as-solutamente spontaneo con il riposo del caval-lo e allontanandolo dalle situazioni stressanti in associazione con la somministrazione di solu-zione elettrolitiche.
L a rabdomiolisi è l’evento più grave ascrivibile alle dismetabolie dovute allo stress da lavoro nel cavallo atleta essa,
è una malattia degenerativa che colpisce le masse muscolari dando luogo come elemento principe diagnostico, la mioglobinuria. Come del resto nelle altre patologie di cui abbiamo

trattato fino ad ora vi sono dei fattori predispo-nenti che preferiscono cavalli con masse mu-scolari molto voluminose ,obesità con accu-mulo di sostanze nutritizie a livello delle masse muscolari sotto forma di lipidi e zuccheri, con-dizioni di scarso allenamento che predispon-gono ad un apparato cardio respiratorio non in grado di supportare le richieste energetiche delle masse muscolari; come abbiamo detto ci sono dei fattori ambientali che in breve riguar-dano le condizioni climatiche; infine i fattori che riguardano il tipo di terreno, le salite, le discese, il tempo di percorrenza e quindi, in sintesi il tipo di attività sportiva cui il cavallo è destinato.Dal punto di vista eziopatogenetico, non si è compreso ancora con precisione se la rab-domiolisi è attribuibile ad un’alterazione delle condizioni elettrolitiche calcio/potassio oppure e con più certezza ad un meccanismo dovuto ad una carenza dell’ossigenazione muscolare durante lo sviluppo di quelle reazioni chimiche che prevedono la combustione degli zuccheri e dei grassi muscolari trasformandoli in energia ATP. In tal senso durante queste reazioni una condizione di carenza di ossigeno comporta il blocco di tale reazione che prevede la libera-zione di un catabolita che è l’acido lattico, tale acido si accumula delle fibro cellule muscolari dando luogo alla rottura delle stesse con la libe-razione del pigmento muscolare (mioglobina) nel sangue di qui il corredo sintomatologico da essa dipendente. Il cavallo si presenta con un atteggiamento particolare con gli arti anteriori fuori di se, i posteriori sotto di se, la testa este-sa su collo tale sintomatologia è sovrapponibile erroneamente ad una sindrome laminitica.Alla deambulazione il cavallo sembra cam-minare sulle uova ci sono tremori muscolari dolori muscolari, ipertermia, disidratazione, inappetenza, miogolbinuria (urine color caffè) e nei casi gravi decubito. La terapia prevede, somministrazione di Ringer lattato, soluzione fisiologica, soluzione di bicarbonato di sodio (tampone dell’acido lattico), anti infiammatori non steroidei, vitamina e Selenio, riposo dell’a-nimale. I tempi di recupero nei casi gravi pos-sono essere anche di alcuni mesi.

degenerative disease that affects the muscles produ-cing the myoglobinuria as main diagnostic element.As in other diseases we talked about before,there are predisposing factors that affect horses with a very vo-luminous muscle mass, obesity with accumulation of nutrients in the form of lipids and sugars at the level of the muscle mass, poor training conditions that predi-spose to a cardio respiratory system not able to sup-port the energy demands of the muscle masses; as we said there are environmental factors concerning the climatic conditions; finally, the factors depending on the type of soil, the climbs, the descents, the travel time and then, in short, the kind of sporting activity in which the horse is involved.From the aetiopathogenetic point of view, they did not accurately understand yet if rhabdomyolysis is attributable to an alteration of the calcium / potas-sium electrolytic conditions or, and more certainly, it is due to a mechanism caused by a lack of muscle oxygenation,during the development of those che-mical reactions involving the combustion of muscular sugars and fats, transforming them into ATP energy.In this sense, a state of oxygen deficiency blockes this reaction by means of the release of a catabolite which is the lactic acid; this acid accumulates in the cells of muscle fibers causing the rupture of the same with the release of the muscle pigment into the blood (myoglobin), hence the set of symptoms depending on it.The horse shows a particular attitude with the front legs out of its body, the hind legs under its body, his head extended on the neck; such symptoms can be mistakenly associated to a laminitis.While it is walking the horse seems to walk on eggshells, there are muscle tremors, muscle pain, hyperthermia, dehydration, lack of appetite, miogol-binuria (coffee-colored urine) and in severe cases de-cubitus.The therapy involves the administration of Ringer lac-tate, saline solution, sodium bicarbonate solution (lac-tic acid swab), anti inflammatory non-steroidal drugs, vitamins and selenium, and the rest of the animal.Recovery times can also be of some months in the severe cases.

S pring is round the corner and our magazine team has star-ted to travel around Europe
and is witnessing the arrival of new foals. So far, we have visited many farms and we are very surprised at how many Europe breeders are using the Gazal line and the good results they are having. Many stallions out of the prestigious blood line of Gazal and Marwan al Shaqab have been imported over the past years and are living in Europe.
We have see many lovely newborn foals and many born last year out of a very nice son of Marwan, GR MARVEL, out of the beautiful daughter of Padron Psyche, LC Ferrarity. Mar-vel is a carismatic chestnut stallion imported to Italy a few years ago by the Arabian Night stud owned by Mr. Franco Bloisi, a well known Italian chef who is in love with Arabian horses and founded his own stud a few years ago.

F ranco Bloisi lives in Rome and works at the Assunta Madre Restaurant, one
of the best restaurants in Italy. He travels around the world to arrange dinners for special people; he had just got back from Los Angeles where he organized a special dinner for the opening of the Cinema Festival.He is a very nice kind man who believes in frien-dship and enjoys life with very good people doing all the best for them.A while ago he got a call from his friend Simone Leo who started telling him about a beautiful che-stnut stallion out of Marwan in the US, with a lot of carisma and a good pedigree. Franco was very excited and after getting pictures, and more pictu-res, he didn’t hesitate for a moment : GR MARVEL was his! After a short time, the young stallion arri-ved in Italy and as usual Franco made a delicious lunch buffet for all his friends to welcome a new star to the Arabian Night stud. He was very hap-py for the new arrival and believed in him so much that from the very first day he saw him he started to collect a nice group of mares to be covered by him.We can count a lot of nice quality foals in Italy, Hol-land, Belgium and Germany. In Italy, of course, the group was better, but also in Belgium whe-re he was in leasing at Joarah arabians - Sarah Mets (Belgium). Some of the foals have alrea-dy been to shows and obtained good results, like Joarah Magdalena. Classwinner and Ove-rall Gold Champion Foal, Elrancup Int B 2014.Franco has a lot of plans for Marvel which is why he has taken him to the Capecci Training Center under the management of Paolo, Susy and Woody. - Da dove nasce questa passione per i cavalli e, in particolare, quella per il cavallo arabo?
- Il mio compagno di vita Gianni essendo nato in Sardegna terra di cavalli, sin da piccolo ha sempre avuto e montato il cavallo, e lui di conseguenza mi ha trasferito la passione. Il cavallo arabo è entrato nella nostra vita quando visitando vari maneggi abbiamo notato una piccola puledra di un mese amore a prima vista la nostra Aisha e da lei tutto è cominciato.
- Cosa vi affascina del mondo del cavallo arabo?
- Il cavallo arabo è sicuramente affascinante per la sua virilità carisma e movimento.

- What triggered this passion for horses, in particular Arabian horses?
A. My lifetime partner who was born in Sardinia – a land of horses – had horses since he was a child and had always ridden. He passed his passion on to me. Arabian horses entererd our lives when we were visiting some stables and we noticed a small , one month old filly. It was love at first sight with our Aisha and that is where it all began.
- What is it that fascinates you about the Arabian horse world?
- The Arabian horse definitely captures one with his virility, carisma and movement.

- Secondo voi, quanto il clima del nostro territorio è adeguato ai cavalli arabi?
- Il cavallo arabo è nato per vivere nel deserto quindi il suo clima ideale è quello ma ovviamente come vediamo si è adattato al nostro clima mediterraneo.

- Il cavallo arabo è speciale per la sua tipicità, il suo fisico snello, il trotto e la bellissima testa camusa con occhi neri e grandi.
- Da quanti anni allevate questa razza?
- Non sono tanti anni che alleviamo, esattamente dal 2009, proprio con l’acquisto della prima puledra Aisha Che ora ha sei anni, che ci ha dato due bellissimi puledri, dopo di lei abbiamo deciso per l’acquisto di uno Stallone, Safeer.
- Come si svolge la vostra giornata da allevatore?
- Purtroppo facendo un’altra attività non possiamo occuparci personalmente dei nostri cavalli, che sono amorevolmente affidati alle mani di Giacomo Boscarino del Paradiso Stud di Fagnano Olona (VA). Ma durante i week end siamo li e ci godiamo i nostri cavalli.
- Qual è il vostro rapporto con i cavalli?
- I nostri cavalli sono anche i nostri amici, giochiamo con loro, li coccoliamo e quando loro riconoscono la nostra voce ci danno un’immensa gioia.
- Quali linee di sangue impiegate principalmente?
- Non abbiamo una linea particolare, i nostri cavalli comunque sono di linea polacca e per metà egiziana.
- Ne preferite una in particolare?
- No non abbiamo una preferenza.
- Quali sono, secondo voi, le qualità principali per diventare un buon allevatore?
- Un buon allevatore di cavalli arabi ne deve conoscere bene le vere caratteristiche morfologiche ed è per questo che sia io che Gianni cerchiamo di informarci leggendo le riviste dedicate all’arabo, è bello anche conoscere la storia del cavallo arabo.
- Quale consiglio dareste a chi vuole intraprendere questo lavoro?
- Un buon allevatore deve avere innanzitutto grande passione, perché allevare significa impegno, sacrifici e a volte delusione.
- Quali sono i vostri programmi per il futuro?
- Il programma è sicuramente quello di migliorare i soggetti dell’allevamento, scegliendo stalloni con linee di sangue ottimali per le nostre fattrici.
- Do you feel that the climate in Italy is suitable for Arabian horses?
- Arabian horses are born to live in the desert and that is their ideal climate; however, as we can see, they have adapted to our Mediterranean climate.
- What is so special about this breed?
- The Arabian horse has a very special ‘type’, a slim body, a characteristic trot and a beautiful dishy head with large black eyes.
- How long have you been breeding Arabian horses?
- Not that long. We started in 2009 when we purchased our first filly Aisha who is now six years old. She has given us two beautiful foals. After her, we decided to buy a stallion: Safeer.
- What is your typical day as a breeder?
- Unfortunately, as we have another job, we cannot personally take care of our horses. They are in the loving care of Giacomo Boscarino at the Paradiso Stud in Fagnano Olona (VA). But, during the week-end we enjoy them.
- What is your relationship with your horses?

- Allevate purosangue da show? Se sì, com’è nata la passione per i concorsi di morfologia?
- I nostri cavalli sono tutti da show. La passione dello show è nata proprio con Aisha che ci ha dato l’opportunità di frequentare gli show, Vedere l’entusiasmo del pubblico esaltarsi nel vedere questi magnifici cavalli trottare a fianco dei propri handlers che ha coinvolto anche noi. I nostri primi show sono iniziati con Safeer, ricordiamo il primo nel 2010 a Marina di Pietrasanta dove ha guadagnato la medaglia d’argento, non avrei mai immaginato di provare tanta gioia ma anche tanta ansia, purtroppo gli show a volte ci danno delusioni, non sempre i giudizi dei giudici combaciano con il nostro pensiero, ma questo aiuta anche a migliorare.
- Ci parlate di un vostro esemplare che si è particolarmente distinto a livello morfologico?
- Safeer, figlio del grande riproduttore Ajman Moniscione, si è distinto negli show per la sua testa camusa tipica della razza araba, occhi neri ed espressivi e per il suo carisma.
- Quanto è importante il marketing in questo settore?
- Credo che il marketing in questo campo sia molto importante per far conoscere ed apprezzare i propri cavalli in tutto il mondo.
- Perché vi siete affezionati ai cavalli?
- Amiamo molto i nostri cavalli li adoriamo e loro contraccambiano.
- Our horses are also our friends. We play with them, we spoil them and when they recognise our voices it gives us immense joy.
- Which bloodlines do you use most of all?
- We don’t have a particular bloodline. However, our horses have Polish blood and are half Egyptian.
- Do you prefer one in particular?
- We don’t have a preference.
- In your opinion, what are the main qualities needed to become a good breeder?
- A good breeder of Arabian horses must have a good knowledge of their morphology. This is why Gianni and I seek information by reading specialised Arabian horse magazines; it is also nice to learn about the history of the Arabian horse.
- What advice would you give to someone who wants to start this type of work?
- A good breeder must first be passionate about what he does. Breeding signifies commitment, sacrifice and sometimes disappointment.
- What are your plans for the future?
- Definitely to improve our production by choosing stallions with excellent bloodlines for our mares.

- Ci raccontate una storia in merito alla quale siete particolarmente legati?
- Sicuramente il momento più importante per il nostro allevamento è stata la nascita del primo puledro avuto dalla nostra fattrice Aisha. Junayd che ora ha due anni, ma ancora più emozionante è stato il momento in cui è nato il primo puledro dal nostro stallone Safeer con Aisha, ne eravamo oltre che proprietari anche allevatori.
- Quando ha preso forma il vostro disegno allevatoriale?
- Un altro momento importante per il nostro allevamento è stato l’acquisto della puledra Hadiya al Mali, Figlia del bellissimo Royal Colours e da MM Eileene. Anche con lei è stato subito amore, ci ha colpiti il suo Carisma e il suo movimento che ha mantenuto ancora oggi che ha 4 anni. Da qui abbiamo compreso che Con questi tre soggetti importanti l’allevamento cominciava a prendere forma. Quest’anno Aisha sarà Coperta con il grande stallone Marajj mentre Hadiya con Safeer.
- Qual è il segreto di tanto successo con i cavalli arabi?
- Sicuramente importante è la scelta di soggetti con ottime caratteristiche con qualità utili a Migliorare le proprie fattrici.
- Quali sono gli obiettivi che vorreste raggiungesse il
- Do you breed thoroughbreds for shows? If so, how did your passion for morphological shows develop?
- Our horses are all show horses. Our passion for shows first started with Aisha who gave us the opportunity to take part in shows. Seeing the enthusiasm of the public watching these magnificent horses trotting alongside their handlers totally overwhelmed us too. Our first shows started with Safeer in 2010 at Marina di Pietrasanta where he won the Silver Medal. I never thought I could feel such joy and such anxiety at the same time! Unfortunately, shows can also be disappointing. Not always the judges’ decisions match our points of view, but this helps us to work on improvement.
- Can you tell us about one of your horses that has had particular success morphologically?
- Safeer, son of the great Ajman Moniscione, has particular success at shows because of his dishy head - so typical of the Arabian breed - his expressive black eyes, and his carisma.
- How important is marketing in this sector?
- I think marketing is very important; it enables you to make your horses known and appreciated all over the world.
- Why are you so attached to your horses?

- Quali tra le vostre fattrici ritenete sia la più importante?
- Per noi tutte ed e due le fattrici sono importanti da un punto di vista affettivo, ma se guardiamo il Pedigree, Hadiya sulla carta è più importante, avendo da parte di madre anche la linea di Ali Jamaal.
- Qual è lo stallone più importante dell’allevamento e per quali caratteristiche ha soddisfatto le vostre aspettative di riproduzione? Ci sono soggetti che ritenete di poter tenere per migliorare il vostro allevamento?
- In questo momento Safeer è il nostro stallone di punta visto che si sta rivelando un ottimo riproduttore.
- Praticate attività sportive con i vostri cavalli?
- Noi abbiamo solo cavalli da show.
- Ci potete indicare i principali risultati ottenuti, indicando il tipo di competizione (sport o morfologia), l’anno in cui avete gareggiato e il nome del cavallo con cui avete vinto?
- Safeer ha ottenuto ottimi risultati guadagnando medaglie
- We love our horses very much, we adore them, and they love us back.
- Can you tell us a story about a particularly fond moment?
- The most important moment in our stud was definintely the birth of our first foal out of Aisha. Junayd is now two years old. But even more exciting, was the moment our first foal was born out of our stallion Safeer with Aisha. We were not only owners, but also breeders.
- When did your breeding plan start to take shape?
- Another important moment in our stud was the purchase of the filly Hadiya al Mali, daughter of the stunning Royal Colours and MM Eileene. With her it was also love at first sight. We were taken by her carisma and movement. She is now four years old and these qualities are unaltered. We then realised that with these three important horses, our stud was starting to take shape.This year, Aisha will be covered by the great stallion Marajj; Hadija by Safeer.
- What is the secret of so much success with Arabian horses?
- The choice of horses with excellent characteristics is definitely important, combined with good quality. These together will help improve production.
- What goals would you like your stud to reach?304

- Diversi allevatori italiani stanno vendendo all’estero molti dei cavalli più importanti del nostro Paese. Cosa ne pensate?
- La crisi che sta attraversando l’Italia ha molto agevolato la vendita dei cavalli più belli degli allevamenti Italiani e questo lo notiamo anche negli show dove il numero e oserei dire la qualità è scesa.
- Our aim is to improve the quality of the stud with optimal bloodlines for each indivudual mare.
- Out of your mares, who do you think is the most important?
- For us, both of the mares are important from an emotional point of view. However, if we consider the pedigrees, Hadiya is the most important on paper as she has Ali Jamaal blood on her mother’s side.
- Which is the most important stallion in your stud and which of his features has satisfied your breeding expectations the most? Are there stallions you think you could keep to improve your stud?
- At the moment, Safeer is our prime stallion. He is proving to be an excellent producer.
- Do you do any sports activities with your horses?
- We only have show horses.
- Can you tell us the most important results you have had, indicating the type of competition, the year, and the name of the horse that won?
- Safeer has had excellent results gaining gold and silver medals and one bronze; Junayd took the gold at Travagliato and Verona, the silver in the Italian Championship in Salerno and the bronze at Travagliato 2014 and Vichy (France). Hadiya took the silver in France, the bronze at Travagliato 2014; Aisha is playing mother but I think that this year she could take part in a show.
- Several Italian breeders are selling many of our most important horses overseas. What do think about this?
- The crisis that has hit Italy has contributed to the sale of the most beautiful horses from Italian studs. This can be seen at shows where our numbers and the quality of our horses has dropped.
