From Feb. 15th to 18th 2012, Kuwait’s state stud bait Al Arab hosted the First International -b show for Arabian Horses and also for the first time a two day Egyptian Event on its spacious and well prepared show ground. This new concept for the annual show event seemed to be greatly

appreciated by the breeders and owners greatly as the number of horses entered into the show was high: 184 horses for the b-show, 223 for the Egyptian Event. As in Kuwait approximately 65% of the Arabian horses are from straight Egyptian bloodlines, it is apt to have a separate

competition for this group. yet the two competitions overlapped nicely: there were horses that competed in both events and, moreover, there was equal support and enthusiasm for both parts. In short: it was four days of celebrating the beauty and heritage of the Arabian horse.

due to the extraordinarily good organization, the show ran smoothly inspite of the large number of horses in

most of the classes and the subsequently narrow time table. both events attracted a large number of spectators right from the very first class up to the last. There were also many guests from countries like saudi Arabia, Qatar, bahrain, the uAE, Egypt, Jordan, usA, Canada, new Zealand and several European countries. The whole event had a very special - and especially for the foreign guests most impressive - atmosphere. Although winning is a wonderful success and was celebrated adequately, it was clearly not what this show was all about. The sheer appearance of many horses was cheered

enthusiastically not only by owners, breeders, and family, but also by fellow breeders and friends. Good placings would be celebrated almost just as much as wins - so it was all about sharing joy and pride within the community of Arabian horse lovers. This included well known breeders climbing onto their chairs to cheer. It felt like a get together of friends rather than a tough competition. Typically Kuwait, one might say.nevertheless it was a strong competition, because the quality was high. The judges - Mrs. Anna stojanowska (pL), Mr. Hassanain Al nakeeb (Gb), Mr. Jaroslaw Lacina (CZ), Mr. Tamas rombauer (Hun) and dr. Manfred neubacher (Aus) - had a hard time selecting the best horses in the classes and in the championships.

INterNatIoNal eCaHo B-SHoWThe ECAHo b-show showed that Kuwait has meanwhile reached a very respectable level for show and breeding horses of international bloodlines. There is for example Al Wawan stud’s bay stallion Alfonzo (by Ab Magnum), last years senior Champion stallion, who was very well represented by his get in the b-show. numerous youngsters by him excelled with elegance, type and a showy attitude and were easily recognizable as Alfonzo get. such as class winners diana Al Wawan, a refined, feminine bay filly, who was also first last year, and Muntaha Alwasan, a 2010 filly also owned by Mr. Ali Matar Al Wawan. Happy owner of as many as four class winners was Mr. Khaled Al nughemshe: the three-year-old colt Aja Andreas by WH Justice out of Aja Anouska, the bold moving polish-bred mare Faraula J (Extern out of Fifa, 2001), who upgraded her last years bronze Champion title to silver this year, the 2008 bay stallion Al Arab Asayel (Aja sanagor x baherah Ezzain), who was also awarded silver, and the 5-year-old already white and classic Al Mazyouna by sinan Al rayyan out of Vischnja, who also achieved the Gold Champion mare title.special awards for best Arabian Female and Male bred and born in Kuwait went - for the second year in a row! - To Al Mazyouna and to Ajmal shahwan by shahin out of Ansata shalimar, an 11-year-old epitome of an Arabian stallion, who won the senior stallion class in the b-show as well as in the Egyptian Event. He was bred at Ajmal Arabian stud and is owned by Mr. Abdullah salem Al sedrawi.

2011 - the Kuwait Arabian Horse breeder Award for both sections of the show. several excellent horses are of his breeding, among them Jr. Male straight Egyptian Champion M. Anan by Ansata Al Murtajiz, whose get were very well represented at the whole show. Mr. Alaa Al roumi and Mr. Talal Al nisf from Al rayah & Al sharg stud did very well with their mares sebha Al rayyan, Jamila Al rayah, and reem Al rayah earning Gold, silver, and bronze medals. Mrs. Mai Ahmed Abdullah entered many lovely horses into the show, the most successful being Gold medal winner M. sarah, a 2010 filly by Ezz Ezzain out of Ansata suleyma.

second to her was another Ezz Ezzain daughter: the yearling filly Al Masa Asayel out of Zakawat, owned by Mr. M. Al rukhaeyess.Mr. Talal Al Mehri of Aljazira stud participated with multiple success: double bronze medals for rodaynah Aljazira (sinan Al rayyan x roba Al rayyan, 2008) and the newly acquired breeding stallion Taleeth Al naif (Ansata shalim x Al Johara, 2003, full brother to World champion Johara Al naif), numerous class wins of Aljazira-bred horses, and a class win for his new arrival, the 2-year-old Amoun princess Jamilah, a Jamil Al rayyan daughter out of Taysouna, bred by the Hain family of Amoun Arabians, Germany, and he obviously had great fun.

The show event was accompanied by many generous invitations from private Kuwaiti breeders and bait Al Arab to lunches, dinners and most impressive stud presentations.About 80 foreign guest, among them Arabian horse breeding celebrities like Mrs. Judy Forbis and dr. Hans nagel, hosts, fellow breeders, and friends shared a great time watching the very best representatives of each breeding program, studying stock lists, discussing and exchanging views, admiring beautifully designed farms, barns, gardens, being pampered with excellent food and most of all enjoying the deep transnational and trans-cultural connection between people who share the passion for the Arabian horse. Actually all inviting farms –including Ajmal Arabian stud, El Adiyat

Arabians, Ezzain Arabians, Al rayah & Al sharq, Al safinat stud, Aljazira Arabians, Al Mubarak stud and Al danat stud - would undoubtedly deserve an extended comment on their breeding concepts, but due to limited space some representative photographs will have to suffice. For the repeat visitor it was very interesting to notice how, over a relatively short time, each stud seems to develop its own type of Arabian horse. This is all the more surprising as they almost all concentrate on very closely related Egyptian bloodlines and they all breed at top level. so you can praise type, movement, refinement etc. at each of these farms. yet there are small hints like the preference of a certain kind of expressive eye or especially tippy ears, a certain shape of head or a focus on stunning movements that indicate to which stud the horse might belong. so it is all the more interesting how this is going to be continued in the future.art exHIBItIoN

Another highlight of the Kuwait Arabian Horse Festival was the opening of an art exhibition displaying an exquisite collection of Carle and Horace Vernet and Victor Adam lithographs and aquatints owned and generously provided by Mr. Mahmood Al Zubaid, Mr. Mohammed Al Marzouq and Mr. Talal Al Mehri. These precious pieces of art, created mostly in the mid - 19th century, were professionally presented in a separate gallery built and donated to bait Al Arab by Tamdeen Group next to the bait Al Arab main office and drew a lot of attention to them as they depict the ideal, classic purebred Arabian horse.

ARTICLE BY DR. HANS J. NAGEL

Baydoun (Gad Allah x Bint Ibtisam)

Tagweed (Gad Allah x Tee)

Asyad (El Ragel x Tahseenat)

Arousat El Zahraa (Aaloub x Tee)

El Zahraa’s sandy paddocks, its stables and surrounding trees create a particular atmosphere perfectly in harmony with its

Arabians that are kept in groups of fillies, colts or mares with their young foals. during the last fifty years, their number has tripled, but it does not appear in any way crowded; there is room enough for many. Arabians from Egypt could claim for themselves a certain type, an Egyptian type, an Abbas pasha type or whatever one may call it. Most of them are refined, never strong or bony: elegant and noble horses. This was the type which the pashas liked and which their emissaries searched for throughout Arabia. Their priorities were different from those of the European expeditions which were choosing horses for their countries during the same period. It is interesting to visit El Zahraa from time to time to observe how its management deals with this heritage, what they are doing in their breeding day by day and what their long-term plans are. Even though El Zahraa looks to be an oasis of stability and solid continuity, such a stud cannot disconnect itself from all the massive outside influences which have moved through the Arabian horse world during the last fifty years. It has to find answers to the challenges which it is facing at present and will face in the future, based on what they have preserved until today. The El Zahraa Arabian Horse stud of Egypt dates back to the year 1920. onIt only came to the attention of Arabian horse enthusiasts some 40 years ago; before that, it was practically an inner-Egyptian affair, well maintained by people who were deeply committed to the Arabian horse; a very typical horse was bred under their management. during the fifties and sixties mainly American breeders, initiated by Ansata Arabians, visited Egypt and imported very beautiful breeding stock, mares and stallions, from Egypt to the states. during the following years, during the seventies, mainly breeders from Germany searched in El Zahraa for good horses for their studs, and finally during the last 20 years, the interest in Arabian horse breeding in the Middle East grew very quickly and breeders from saudi Arabia and the Gulf were very keen on bringing Egyptian Arabians to their countries. To buy horses from Egypt was and still is a big issue for them. These are horses which are close to their region and they have remained in their region, in the Middle East, in so far they are considered to be still “their Arabians”. In addition, at El Zahraa they can find first class horses of the old Egyptian type; not many, but it happens again and again that such horses are foaled at El Zahraa. This issue is a great challenge for El Zahraa, not to let the best ones go even if high prices are offered by the buyers. Hopefully the mistakes of the past will not be repeated, when so many of their best foals of each year disappeared across the ocean. previously only a few private breeders, like Al badeia stud or the studs of the Hamza family, the heritage of the famous Hamza pasha, long time Minister of Agriculture at King Farouk’s time, and Mrs barbary kept a good number of Arabians in their stables, all based on El Zahraa breeding. Visitors from abroad enjoyed visiting these farms as well when they came to search for Arabians in Egypt, keeping in mind that good Arabians could be found at these studs as well. Maybe 70 foals were born at that time at El Zahraa and half of that number at private studs. now all this MoSa MoSa

A visit to the El Zahraa stud in Egypt is a highlight for everyone who likes and admires Arabians. This stud lies in a country of Arabian culture. Most of its land is desert, with only a narrow central area blessed with fertile land and water alongside of the huge river nile. El Zahraa incorporates an amazing history of the Arabian horse and has its roots in the time when many precious horses left their Arabian homeland at the beginning of the 19th century and found a new home in neighboring Egypt.

has changed. More than 400 private studs are operating besides El Zahraa in Egypt, and El Zahraa has doubled the number of its mares to 150. Egypt has become one of the fastest growing countries in Arabian horse breeding; but in spite of all this new development, El Zahraa has kept a dominant and prominent position when the subject “straight Egyptian Arabians” is on the table. El Zaahra is the state owned stud of Egypt, the only one in the country and the only one for breeding Arabians. It operates under the EAo, the Egyptian Agricultural organization, which after the 1956 revolution replaced the royal Agricultural society (rAs) which was formed in the early 20th century in order to improve agriculture in Egypt and to save the Arabian horse heritage of the pashas. To breed purebred Arabian horses has always been a highly favoured profession in Egypt and the main reason why this group of horses could survive all ups and downs in Egypt’s recent history with revolutions, wars, poverty, and even starvation. The EAo/El Zahraa stud is the official organization for all matters concerning Arabian breeding in Egypt; under the supervision of the EAo, it publishes the official studbook for all Arabians in Egypt; it issues rules and regulations for the private sector and organizes an attractive Arabian horse show every year in its own grounds. This stud book was closed in 1956 for any new horses. At that time a last well-selected group of horses was added to the El Zahraa herd, the so-called “Inshass Arabians”. These Arabians were kept by the Kings of Egypt at their own stud, located in the Inshass region north-East of Cairo. This stud once had a strong position, since the kings also collected horses of Abbas pasha breeding and kept many Arabians which were given to them by high personalities such as kings or noblemen from other countries. stallions from this stud were often transferred in earlier times to El Zahraa for breeding purposes. The first stud books which El Zahraa was published were divided into several sections. Each section covered a certain strain; the strain in the sense as it was taken from the time of bedouin breeding. Each of these strain sections was mostly composed of only 1 or 2 families and the majority of these families could show a very positive development in the course of time. Following the order of these official stud books of El Zahraa, the first horses mentioned were always the ones of the seglawi strain, dominated today by the descendants of Moniet el nefous. This is the oldest family in the stud, tracing back to the year 1845, one of the famous historic Abbas pasha lines. Today, El Zahraa has 46 mares and fillies from this strain in its breeding herd. Two of them are the nice mares Arousat el Zahraa and Asayad. The second in the order is the strain of Hadban. This group traces back to one foundation mare “Venus”, brought to Egypt

in 1890. This group could be divided into two families, that of bint rustem, continued by yosreia and her daughters, and that of samiha, represented today through Kamla by the mare naama. This is a very nice family, in total about 45 mares and fillies, 8 of them belonging to the most exquisite group, for example Zadah, Fohoud, nagwat, saysabana, Ghona, Awasef, Kabsah, Gharam. The third strain-group is the dahman shawan, in numbers not so strong, with only 16 mares. There are two different dahman foundation mares, both tracing back to the late 19th century, originating from bahrain. Today one could list under this strain the family of Farida with Abla and nefisa, and the family of sabah through bukra; the other bahraini family had its continuation in Maisa el saghira and her offspring. A very nice mare from this group is Malayka. The fourth strain and in number the most important one – 60 in total - represents the Koheilan rodans, one of the oldest families in Arabian horse breeding, tracing back to the foundation mare rodania, bought by Lady Anne blunt in the syrian desert. From this family, the two mares riyalla and risalla came to Egypt. The mare Mamlouka was the most prominent representative of the riyalla family and yashmak and her daughters and granddaughters are the continuation of the riyalla line. Another, smaller Koheilan family came to El Zahraa from the Inshass stud. The present stallion serag el din belongs to this family, a correct, well-made horse who has given the stud a good number of foals. And finally there are the horses of the obeyan strain. Again, two families, one going back to om El Gres, the other to the mare obeya, of which om el Gres is the dominating one. A total of 16 mares and fillies are available for breeding. This obeyan group has always included some of the finest horses at El Zahraa, like the mare Ameena and her daughter Enayat, the finest Morafic daughter one might find. At present the mares Tomur and Mangooma are again excellent examples of this obeyan group. In summary, all important strains and female lines are still available in El Zahraa, and even in a respectable number. The question arises why El Zahraa has kept all these many strains with different families, even when some of these horses are not appealing or particularly attractive. This fact corresponds with the purpose of state studs which feel committed to the important duty of “preserving a heritage”. not all of their original bloodstock was as perfect as one would expect, but still a certain value was attributed to them, possibly a quality in breeding, a good genotype. The same statement and observation could be made for other studs, like the polish state studs or Marbach. All these studs emerged out of a certain history and nobody is willing to throw anything away which is still strongly connected with the past. some very few private breeders are interested in such principles, but the majority concentrates on just a few families which they feel correspond to their and taste and interest. besides the purpose of heritage, there other additional important purposes and aims in order to breed these horses in a certain direction. There should be a well defined goal. It appears that in the past all major studs followed the principle of breeding their own, correct horses in order to arrive at a type of horse symbolizing their breeding ideas and purposes. In this concert of breeding, the

Egyptian horses gained and maintained a reputation for type; Egyptians became famous for El Zahraa’s own type, and they became specialised in this respect, proved by the fact that many Egyptian stallions were used in other breeding populations in order to improve type; type in the sense of a lighter, elegant horse, which is generally known as the seglawi type, in contrast to the Koheilan type representing a more compact, heavier boned and more masculine horse. This type description follows the system of types established by raswan.

Rawwah (Rashdan x Ramiah)Considering the total

number of families deriving from each of the 5 strains, it is obvious that not all

the El Zahraa stock could be of the same type; this fact is one reason for the

variety. The second reason why there must be different

types, are the stallions.

over a long period of time, only very few stallions were used in El Zahraa’s breeding program. Long-time Egyptian breeders are familiar and well acquainted with names like Ibn radban, shahloul, El sareei, and balance, and with the name of Mansour and his two sons nazeer and sheikh el Arab. All these stallions were quite similar to each other, of medium size. Ibn radban was the only one who tended a bit more towards the so-called Koheilan type. These stallions were bred

Mangoomah(Gad Allah x Wadha)

to the mares at El Zahraa when their total number was still smaller. people are well aware of the offspring of these horses, remembering the mares bukra, Kamla, Halima, Moniet el nefous, yashmak, just to mention a few well known ones. All excellent mares, very similar to each other, some with more positive, others with more negative points here or there. After World War II, stallions of a different type were chosen for breeding. These horses were taller, of good conformation, overall mostly correct horses, but not really in line with the traditional type used

until then. sid Abouhom and sameh were taller horses whereas Anter and Gassir were of medium size, but stronger of bone, broader in the chest, heavier in the neck, but again different in type. besides these new introductions, several nazeer sons were used for breeding. All of them were of medium size, only Morafic and his sons were taller, with fine bones, nice necks, sometimes narrower in the chest, also depending on their dams who also influenced many of their features. These new stallions, different from each other, also increased the variety of type at El Zahraa with the consequence that some horses were formed by the influence of their sires and others were mainly formed by the influence of their dams, and there were many. It was mainly the breeders and buyers from the usA and Germany who encouraged El Zahraa’s directors to favour such different stallions. one reason was a commercial one, to sell so-called “nazeer-free” horses, a silly policy proposed and applied since that time by other breeders offering horses free of something or other, and the other concern and fear that too much breeding with nazeer

blood could create weakness through in-breeding. These recommendations were totally unprofessional and should have been ignored or, when applied, then only with great care and prudence. It is interesting to note that at the present time, only the Mansour-nazeer sire line is still clearly established at El Zahraa. It is strange that none of the other, newer stallions could establish their own sire line. It should be mentioned that there was a sire line of Ibn radban in the past, including shahloul and El sareei but ending with Tuhotmos; and

one could construct a sire line with a certain continuation from Kheir, Gassir, Mourad, and serag el dine; however, their influence is not really evident. This is how El Zahraa represents itself today as a breeding population. What are the present efforts for further developing El Zahraa’s breeding? To maintain the nazeer sire line is considered to be the best, most vital and most logical way. The present stallions baydoon and Taghweed represent this idea in a good and promising way. It is not a great surprise that the mares belonging to the Hadban family get very good results when bred to these stallions. both mares and stallions share a great number of very important ancestors, mainly of the Hadban strain. These two stallions in addition to serag el dine are actually bred to nearly all of the mares belonging to the different strains. There is a great potential here which needs to be put in a proper order in the course of time. In principle, a second strong, well-tested sire line would be needed in the long run, which would help to make successful breeding

easier. At one time it seemed that the combination of nazeer sons with Anter daughters would give acceptable results, and in fact it was very successful; many nice daughters were born, but too many were sold abroad. Many buyers chose such horses, apparently they must have liked them. Fillies like Marah, Taghreed, bint nazeera, all went to Germany, and many more of these bloodlines left for the usA. At that time many horses had to be sold due to the poor economical situation in Egypt in general and at El Zahraa in particular.

In any case, the great potential of El Zahraa’s mares makes for great possibilities. The stud has a small group of excellent mares, if one would divide the total stock into two classes of different quality. At every other stud there are horses of different qualities. The question is only: how large is the percentage of these quality mares, and is this first class composed of the same bloodlines or do certain horses constantly drop out and new ones come in? It seems that the first class at El Zahraa is relatively stable, and new, nice mares join the herd, allowing this percentage to increase constantly. It is very important that El Zahraa continues to resist the large amount of money which is going around to buy such first class horses. A stud would loose itself if it sold its elite. one must also consider that the general public likes two types: The perfect show horse and the noble Arabian. both types could be combined in one, but this is mostly not the case. The word “charisma” makes all the difference. some people notice charisma, others have no sense for it. The same feature on a taller horse appears different than in a smaller one. The show horse of today is stronger, taller, correct; it has type, but refinement is often lost. no doubt, the traditional Arabian was a lighter horse overall. Egypt has a potential for both. It derived from its history an Egyptian of the seglawi type, horses like Aswan and his sons, Morafic, Ibn Halima, Alaa el din, and others. They were the source of the original type and its continuation, they were used to promote type even outside of Egypt. but in addition, elegant horses with a great conformation and constitution, as required for a show horse, are available, like sameh, topline, conformation and movement in perfection. Many Egyptians with sameh prominently in their pedigrees have proved their success in the show ring. In this respect, El Zahraa remains one of the most interesting studs in the entire Middle East and on the map of worldwide Arabian horse breeding. It has every chance to continue to influence the Arabian horse population in a beneficial way in the future.

To discover such successful combinations and to establish a second sire line which would match with the Nazeer

sire line in the sense of a “nick” is a well-considered breeding idea at the El Zahraa Stud these days.

Maintaining the nutritional well-being of mares and foals throughout weaning is

part and parcel of a successful separation. Weaning will likely be the most stressful event of the foal’s life, its primary source of comfort will have vanished. While concern for the foal is justified, the mare deserves consideration as well, and for her the chief management task involves shifting nutritional requirements. Most mares are fed a concentrate feed while lactating, because they require the energy as well as the vitamins and min-erals to produce sufficient high-quality milk and to maintain adequate body con-dition.owners should consider reducing con-centrates fed to mares as weaning day approaches, though concentrate should still be available to the foal. Keep a mare from snatching the foal’s feed by using a creep feeder or by tying the mare while the foal eatsIt is recommended that mares be taken off concentrates during weaning. be-cause many broodmares are also preg-nant at this time, they should be kept

on an appropriate vitamin and mineral supplement and should still have access to good quality hay .Generally, a one to two week break from concentrates will be good. As soon as milk production stops and the udder returns to a normal, non lactating size, the mare can be started back on concen-trates, as long as the calories and the pro-tein content of the diet decrease. since there is no suckling stimulus, milk pro-duction should stop quickly.once the mare has dried up, the focus should turn to weight management of the mare. The demands of lactation af-fect mares differently. some mares maintain weight without a problem, while body condition seems to melt off others throughout lactation. Those that loose significant amounts of weight dur-ing lactation require the most consider-ation after weaningIf the mare has lost a lot of body condi-tion while nursing a foal, then a high calorie diet is recommended to help get the mare back to an acceptable weight. The best way to add calories to a diet is through high quality forage. This may include full time access to good quality

pasture (mostly not available in coun-tries of the Middle East) or of a legume hay such as mixed hay.Concentrates can be introduced back into the diet gradually. Without the phys-iological drain of milk production, the mare should use the dietary energy to increase body condition. Feeds that are formulated with multiple energy sources such as starch, fat, and fibre might be useful. For the thin mare it is really important to get some extra body condition before the third trimester of pregnancy to prepare for the high caloric needs of late gesta-tion and lactation. It would be important to get her to an acceptable body condi-tion score. she may gain weight quickly once the foal is off her.some mares handle lactation with ex-traordinary ease from a physiological perspective. If a mare is still at optimum weight after nursing a foal for months, then the chief concern would be to offer adequate vitamin and mineral intake to balance the inadequacies of forage. This can be done with a pelleted vitamin and mineral supplement or an equine min-eral salt mix or block.

proper nutrition throughout the foal’s first year of life can affect his musculoskeletal health and his future

performance. The growing foal passes through three important nutritional phases: nursing, creep feeding, and weaning. during nursing, proper feeding of the dam ensures her milk production and quality are adequate for the foal. Creep feeding (feeding foals concentrate separate from mares) then provides nutrients as the mare’s milk production begins to wane and minimizes the stress of weaning. Finally, once the foal is weaned, his diet must be formulated to provide all of the nutrients the growing horse needs.

during the first few years of life, nutrition has a large impact on many body systems. The skeleton is developing at a rate only second to that which occurs in utero. The tissues and organs are adapting to the nutritional environment of the foal. Tissues are all turning over at a great rate and this all means that it is during this time in a horse’s life that those feeding the horse can probably have the greatest influence on the future health and athletic performance they will see from their horse. Those directly caring for the growing horse should monitor his condition closely and adjust nutrition appropri-ately.

FEEdInG FoALs

tHe NurSINg Foal

The foal should begin to nurse within the first couple of hours of his life. This will ensure the foal receives adequate co-lostrum from the mare to provide him with sufficient passive immunity (anti-bodies transferred from the dam to the foal through the colostrum). Foals will continue to nurse multiple times per day. While some might start nibbling solid feeds within a couple of days, the milk produced by the mare (and con-sumed by the foal) should meet all of the foal’s nutritional needs until he reaches approximately two months of age. Thus, adequate nutrition for the nursing foal requires providing adequate nutrition for the lactating mare. The mare’s diet is just as important as the foal’s. The majority of the nutrients in the first few months of life come from her milk.during these first two months of lacta-tion (“early lactation”) the mare produces approximately 3 kg of milk per 100 kg of her body weight per day, although rang-es from 2.3 - 3.8 kg have been reported. during late lactation, mares produce ap-proximately 2 kg of milk per 100 kg of body weight. The milk composition also varies with the stages of lactation, as milk within the first four weeks of lacta-tion tends to have higher energy, protein, calcium, and phosphorus levels than milk at five to eight weeks or at nine to 21 weeks postpartum. The milk’s nutrient concentration and the amount of milk the mare produces affects her nutrient requirements such that in early lacta-tion, when milk production is highest, her nutrient needs are higher, and she should be fed accordingly. The impact of the mare’s nutritional status on milk production and quality is of great interest to the owners / breed-ers and the veterinarians. If the mare is thin and does not receive adequate nutri-tion, the quantity of milk she produces tends to decrease. dietary composition (i.e., roughage to grain ratios, added fat) and energy excess also appear to affect milk composition (milk fat or protein content).during lactation, mares might be using more energy to produce milk than they are consuming. In order to keep them from losing weight, they need to be fed energy-dense diets. Thus, the mare should be offered good-quality hay (free-choice) and concentrate fed at approxi-mately 0.5 - 1.5% of her body weight; more in early lactation, fed to maintain body weight and condition.Careful attention should be paid to the nursing behavior of the foal. This is an important indicator of the health and general well-being of the foal. during the first few days of life you should see the foal suckling several times an hour. If the dam’s udder becomes distended or she is dripping milk, it may be an indica-tor that the foal is not suckling. This is a situation that should raise the attention of those caring for the foal immediately. If the foal is not suckling, this could in-dicate a condition such as dummy foal syndrome; contact your veterinarian right away.

a Foal’S DIet IS CrItICal For HIS DevelopMeNt, DISeaSe preveNtIoN, aND Future perForMaNCe.

Creep FeeDINg

If given access, a foal will often start nib-bling at his dam’s concentrate within a few days of life. owners need to be care-ful offering creep feed, as many people don’t realize that foals will eat their mother’s feed as well as their own.Creep feeding isn’t as nutritionally im-portant until the foal is around eight weeks old, at which point the mare’s milk production and quality start to decrease. At this time, the foal won’t be meeting his nutrient requirements through nursing alone, and offering creep feed becomes increasingly impor-tant. Furthermore, studies have shown that foals that are offered creep feed have higher average daily weight gains and experience less weaning stress than foals that are not offered creep feed.

provide creep feed using creep feeders, which allow access for the foal, but not the dam. As with any nutritional tran-sition, it is best if it is done gradually. Creep feeding allows the foal to acquaint itself with diet similar to what it will have after weaning. Foals will also start to consume hay and/or grass as available, although they will consume more con-centrate than forage during this time.before four months of age, the foal should be offered up to 0.5 - 1 kg of feed per 100 kg of body weight per day. The concentrate should be formulated espe-cially for the growing horse, although many companies produce feeds for mares that are specifically suitable for creep feeding. Whole grains are not rec-ommended, as they tend to be low in calcium and copper, nutrients important to foal growth and health. Creep feed for foals should contain approximately 14 - 16% crude protein, 0.7 - 0.9% calcium, 0.5 - 0.6% phosphorus, 50 - 90 ppm (parts per million) copper, and 120 - 240 ppm zinc.

FeeDINg tHe WeaNlINg

once the foal is fully weaned from the mare, he should be provided with free-choice good quality grass or mixed grass-legume hay and water, and a measured amount of concentrate. Con-centrate should be offered at a rate of approximately 1 - 1.5% of the foal’s body weight. Again, the concentrate provided should be formulated for growing hors-es. It should contain approximately 13 - 15% crude protein, 0.8% calcium, 0.5% phosphorus, 50 - 80 ppm copper, and 100 - 200 ppm zinc.

The growth rate of weanlings is known to decrease considerably during their first winter. This leads to a subsequent period of rapid compensatory growth in the following spring. If adequate growth is maintained in the first place via proper nutrition, it should not need to undergo compensatory growth later.”

otHerCoNSIDeratIoNS

A key element in managing growing horses’ nutrition is to monitor their growth rates. There are a few equations available to estimate body weight in foals for those without access to a scale. some take into consideration heart girth and body length in addition to length and circumference of the forelimb, but a simple equation using a weight tape is: Weight (kg) = Heart girth (meters)3 x 90. Also monitor body condition to ensure your foal isn’t becoming too fat or thin to determine proper body condition score.

The average daily gain for a foal slows as he ages, but it will be approximately 0.84 kg/day for a 4-month-old (for an expected mature weight of 450 kg), 0.72 kg/day for a 6-month-old, and 0.45 kg/day for a yearling.

Another important factor when it comes to the growing horse is exercise. regard-less of nutritional intake, a young grow-ing horse that is provided exercise (even just free exercise in a pasture) develops greater bone strength than a horse con-fined to his stall. In fact, recent research suggests that differences in exercise al-lowance impact bone metabolism to a greater degree than do differences in nutrition. This is not to suggest that nu-trition is not important, however. The successful horseman will be the one that develops a management program for growing horses that incorporates excel-lent nutrition with some sort of appro-priate exercise program.

similar to dietary trends for mature horses, more young horse feed products are becoming available in which more of the calories come from sources such as fat and fiber, rather than from starch. such formulations are designed to mini-mize glucose and insulin level fluctua-tions, which might play a role in the de-velopment of metabolic or orthopedic disorders. providing fiber as an energy source also fits very well with the natural feeding strategy of the horse.

bint El bahreyn was unique in that she was the only tap root mare in straight Egyptian breeding that came from bahreyn – a fact illustrated by

her name, “daughter of bahreyn”. she is also a good illustration of the early connections between Lady Anne blunt and the rAs.

Bint El Bahreyn – the other

Dahman familyb

int El bahreyn was a bay mare foaled in 1898 and was of the dahmah shahwanieh strain; her exact parentage is

not recorded. In 1903, she was given by the ruler of bahreyn, sheikh Issa ben Kahlifa, to Khedive Abbas pasha II. If she had any offspring there, we do not know; her entire line of descent comes from her daughter dalal (by Jamil),

who was bred by Lady Anne blunt in 1910. Lady Anne had purchased bint El bahreyn from Abbas pasha in 1907. she sold her again in 1912, but it is not known who bought her or what became of her afterwards. In 1917, dalal in turn foaled durra (by saadun), also bred by Lady Anne, who became a rAs foundation mare in 1924 and through whom the entire

family descends today by way of two daughters: bint durra (1924 by Eid) and Zareefa (1927 by Kazmeen).bint durra’s branch did not survive long in Egypt and is found today chiefly through her second daughter bint bint durra (1930 by Ibn radban), who was among the horses imported to the usA by Henry babson in 1932. she had three sons and three daughters, all of

which bred on, and became extremely influential, especially through her grandsons durral (out of her daughter Fadurra) and daaldan (out of her daughter Fay dalla) whose blood is found in many American pedigrees today, in daaldan’s case also in many babson Egyptian horses. bint bint durra’s black grandson sa Zarka (by her son Fad Zarka) is found in many

black breeding programmes both in the usA and in Europe.Zareefa, who was by Kazmeen and thus of 100 % blunt breeding, was a prolific producer and a highly influential mare. Her first daughter was sold and left no produce; her second daughter badia died young, only 8 years old, but did leave one son Gassir, who became an early sire for the EAo and an important source of non-nazeer blood. Gassir excelled as a broodmare sire, producing among others the international foundation mares El Aziza (Hungary, Germany), bint shahbaa (Austria), Lebleba (usA), nazeefa (Germany), and bint Inas (Hungary). His sons include Zaghloul, imported to the usA by Gleannloch Farms, and the EAo sires sabeel and Mourad.Zareefa’s second daughter bint Zareefa left three different, and again very international branches. Her granddaughter bint rawya was one of the original om El Arab imports to Germany in the early 1970s; two of her daughters, Adam Kheir and bassima, were also imported and left offspring there. bint rawya was the dam of Ibn shaker I, the only straight Egyptian son of shaker El Masri found in pedigrees today. bint Zareefa’s daughter Ahlam II produced the black Cleopatraa,

imported to the usA by Gleannloch, who became a foundation mare for bentwood Farms. Ahlam II’s younger daughter was Azza I, whose daughter bint Azza I was exported to bábolna in Hungary and founded her own family there through her straight Egyptian daughter 29 Ghalion, a prolific broodmare with international descendants. Azza I’s son souhayl was exported to Germany and sired a number of good producing daughters.Zareefa’s most influential offspring, however, were the full brother and sister by shahloul, El sareei and Maisa. El sareei, a splendid bay stallion foaled in 1942, was one of the EAo’s chief sires and tremendously influential. His best daughters include Zebeda (dam of shaker El Masri), bint Kamla (dam of Lotfeia) and the black Mohga (dam of Ibn Galal). He is perhaps best known for his famous son Tuhotmos, a prolific sire of superior broodmares and international sires. Tuhotmos daughters include Zabia (Germany), Tamria (Hungary), bint Jehan (britain), and of course the famous 4 mares that established Kauber platte stud in Germany: Hania, nana, set Husen, and Moetazza. All these mares have descendants throughout the world today. Tuhotmos sons include darrag (usA), Farouk and Kasr El nil (Germany), ragheb (Tunisia), Fawzan

Ammal (Morafic x

Bint Maisa El Saghira), 1968 grey stallion. He was a tall and

very beautiful individual with extraordinarily

large black eyes. He was never shown

due to early leg injuries. He went on to become a very important sire.

Bint Maisa El Saghira (Nazeer x Maisa)

Dahmah Shahwaniah (Ansata Ibn Halima x Bint Maisa El Saghira), 1966 bay mare. She was one

of the all-time favorites of this family. Her pedigree reflected the combination of the two Dahman families perpetuated in Egypt; the Durra tail

(France), without including all those he sired after he was exported to the usA in 1973, where he was very popular as well.El sareei’s full sister Maisa became influential especially through her exported offspring. Her daughter bint Maisa El saghira, by nazeer, became one of the best broodmares for Gleannloch farms, as well as being a halter and performance champion. Her foals include the enormously influential stallion shaikh Al badi (sire of ruminaja Ali among others), his full brother Amaal, and broodmares dahmah Il Ashekwar, dahmah shahwaniah, radia, rihahna, and nafairtiti. dahmah shahwaniah’s daughter AK nawaal was sold to Mrs. rosemarie Kolster of Authentic Egyptian Arabians - Germany, where she was a successful broodmare. Maisa’s son Madkour by Morafic was an important foundation stallion in Germany, whose sons include premium and Elite stallions Messaoud and Montasar, as well as several other stallions and a large number of broodmares.Maisa was also the dam of the stallion Ibn Maisa, whose black daughter El Garia was a broodmare of note in Germany. Her son El Abd, by Gharib, headed one of the leading black breeding programmes in Germany for many years and was a successful show jumper in open competition.Zareefa’s last daughter Elwya (1950 by sid Abouhom), also has a successful international branch today, besides being the dam of EAo sire seef. she did not leave a family at El Zahraa, but her daughter Tifla was a foundation mare for Al badeia stud. There, she produced in 1967 a filly by Alaa El din named om El Arab. om

El Arab was not only among the original om El Arab imports to Germany, she also gave the stud farm its name, which was enough to grant her immortality. but true to her name – which of course means “mother of Arabians”, she also founded a dynasty of her own, though not at that stud farm. Her granddaughter ora (a daughter of the above-mentioned Ibn shaker I, also of bint El bahreyn’s family) became a foundation mare at Maiworm stud and is the mother of the “o” dynasty which includes the international champions and sires orashan (usA, Australia), orashaan (Germany, britain) and orayan (britain). There is another, smaller branch to Elwya through her youngest daughter, Ansata bint Elwya, a foundation mare for Ansata Arabians in the usA. she was the dam of the first straight Egyptian stallion to be imported to Australia, Ansata El Hakim, who was a prolific sire there with many descendants. There is one slightly more hidden source of bint El bahreyn blood through dalal today. dalal had a daughter named bint dalal, whose year of birth was not recorded; but her breeder was prince Kemal Ed dine, so she was obviously foaled after Lady Anne had sold her dam. Through her daughter bint bint dalal, she is the granddam of the stallion Mekdam by rustem, foaled in 1932. He is still found in pedigrees today through his daughter obeya, the dam of the EAo chief sire Antar who was hugely influential in his own right. He was the sire of the black Gharib, many years chief sire at Marbach, as well as of many important broodmares both in Egypt and in the usA.

Orashan (Messaoud x Ora) 1983 grey stallion. Bred in Germany, he was imported to the U.S. by Imperial Egyptian Stud and

became a successful show horse and sire of show horses. He traces to Elwya in tail female.
