COMPANY OVERVIEW

Australian Rail Track Corporation is dedicated to modernising rail in Australia and has done so for more than 20 years. Our principal business is to manage more than 8,500km of track over five states, including NSW, Queensland, SA, WA and Victoria.

Since 1997, we’ve invested billions of dollars to standardise, extend and upgrade our network – in fact, over the past 10 years, we’ve invested more than $6.5 billion into the network.

We are unashamed champions of rail as a cost efficient, reliable, safe and responsible mode of transport. And we’re proud to have contributed an average of more than $790 million a year over the past five years to the Australian economy each year.

We employ more than 1,500 people across the country, with 27 provisioning centres and main offices in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney and Wagga Wagga.

In addition to our ongoing maintenance schedule which runs 365 days a year across the network, we currently have more than $11 billion of major projects underway, including the Port Botany Rail Line duplication project, the Cabramatta Loop project, the North East Rail Line Upgrade, as well as the Inland Rail Program.

Across our network we manage around 450 freight and passenger trains per day – that’s more than 164,000 trains a year – making ARTC a vital part of the nation’s transport supply chain and the economic development of Australia.

We are a client-centric organisation with a reputation for pioneering innovations and for fresh approaches to age-old challenges. We bring together diverse professionals from around the world, as well as local experts from railways and maintenance backgrounds. We offer a range of services across rail structures (tunnels, bridges, station boxes), rail systems (track, electrification, signalling and train control), operations modelling, depot planning, and systems engineering and assurance.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

ATHRA is the national Tourist and Heritage (T&H) Rail industry representative body, whose Board comprises elected State representatives and co-opted specialists. It is a voluntary group whose aims are primarily to provide support to the operating T&H organisations across Australia.

The support comes through the facilitation of national working groups, each comprising expert volunteers in that field working together to develop solutions that can be shared across the sector - do it well once and share widely is our aim.

We have primary working groups developing material in the broad fields of Training & Assessment, Insurance Accreditation, Engineering codes, Boiler codes, etc. There are also smaller working groups and sometimes one or two individuals that get together to tackle specific sector issues such as carriage electrics, ticketing, GPS/speedo solutions, etc. It is all about knowledge sharing and helping one another.

ATHRA provides the sector with a formalised national Training and Assessment program for Locomotive Enginemen and Safeworking staff. The program is AQF based and approved by ONRSR as an alternative to RTO based training. We are keen to expand the program to cover other T&H RSW grades.

ATHRA also works very closely with ONRSR to provide strong two-way communication on strategic and current issues relating to rail regulation.

ATHRA also provides representative input to, and industry comment as requested by, bodies such as ONRSR, ARA, RISSB, Worksafe, State and Federal Governments and their agencies.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Auckland Transport is responsible for all of the region’s transport services (excluding state highways), from roads and footpaths, to cycling, parking and public transport.

Auckland Transport’s day-to-day activities keep Auckland’s transport systems moving; including planning and funding of public transport, promoting alternative ways to get around and operating the local roading network.

Auckland Transport is a Controlled Organisation (CCO) of Auckland Council. The organisation combines the transport expertise and functions of the eight former local and regional councils and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA). The establishment of Auckland Transport marks the first time in Auckland’s history that all transport functions and operations for the city have come under one organisation.

Among its main Train Services tasks are:

• Upgrading train stations on Auckland’s rail network

• Develop bus/train interchanges, and park and ride facilities

• Monitor and review existing public transport services

• Provide information about public transport services

• Fund concession fares for senior citizens, school children and tertiary students

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) ’s main mission is to undertake high-speed, large-capacity passenger transport “Tokaido Shinkansen” between Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka. After the inauguration of the world’s first high-speed rail in 1964, it has brought unprecedented prosperity to Japan, and with continuous development, we take pride in its world-class safety, punctuality, frequency, and energy efficiency. There has been no accidents resulting in fatalities or injuries of passengers onboard since operations commenced, the annual average delay is 0.9 minutes per train in service (Apr 2018 - Mar 2019), 12 trains per hour in peak, the inter-city transportation capacity is more than 450,000 passengers per day, and energy consumption per passenger seat is about one-eighth of airplane.

We are now steadily moving forward with efforts aimed at the completion of the Chuo Shinkansen between Shinagawa (Tokyo Metropolitan Area) and Nagoya in 2027, using the superconducting Maglev system, which maximum operational speed is 500km/h and realizes 285.6km travel between Shinagawa and Nagoya only in 40 minutes.

Central Japan Railway Company Sydney Office has an important role, which is to have people in Australia and New Zealand deepen their understanding of our high-speed rail system; technology, history, transit-oriented development, and so on. Besides that, we are advertising our tourist-friendly service for railway travellers in Japan, Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen Online Reservation Service, which is seat reservation system available from Australia; SCMaglev and Railway Park, railway museum specialized in high speed rail in Japan; Various kinds of Tourist Pass.

Many exciting railway projects in Australia and New Zealand are now in full bloom, and we enjoy hearing about them. We would like to share wide scope knowledge with you and make every effort to contribute to the railway industry in the both countries.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Freightquip are Australian and New Zealand distributors for a wide range of rail equipment. Originally only catering for shunting vehicles, the portfolio has now expanded to include rail depot equipment, wash plants, workshop equipment, autonomous guided vehicles, sanding equipment, gen-set locomotives and depot protection and control systems. Providing high quality, reliable products is a pillar of our organisation, and the equipment manufacturers have been selected only if they meet the high service level standards we set.

This complementary grouping of rail products allows us to present a very complete rail depot portfolio where you can rely upon and contract with one supplier to ensure maximum performance effectiveness and customer support.

In the shunting equipment sector, our equipment manufacturing partners of Zephir and Trackmobile – two of the largest industry players – have joined forces under the Berkshire Hathaway owned Global Railcar Mover Group. The shared knowledge in manufacturing innovations and R&D between these companies has continued to exceed the already exceptionally high service capabilities to deliver these continual improvements onto the customer. As a result, the shunting equipment available in Freightquip’s portfolio is truly market leading.

We have partnered with the largest global supplier of Underfloor Wheel Lathes, Vertical Lathes and Wheelshop equipment – Danobat. Having a close and integrated relationship with the OEM has allowed us to better support the customer, through improved service capability, expedited response times and local spare parts support.

For our other workshop equipment we have a wide range of other partners to assist in providing some critical equipment requirements; jacks, lifting equipment, drop tables, bogie turntables; with the OEMs being Emanuel, INNDES and Whiting.

In the other categories such as Rail wash plants, gen-set locomotives and depot protection and control systems we have partnered with industry leaders – Air Rail, LEAF and First Class Safety & Control.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Major Projects Canberra (MPC) was established on 1 July 2019 to lead the procurement and delivery of the Australian Capital Territory’s infrastructure program. It has two main components:

• Procuring and delivering infrastructure projects designated by the Chief Minister into MPC:

― Typically, those designated projects will have significant complexity and scale. MPC will bear budget accountability for those projects and have accountability to the relevant Minister responsible for those projects

― The first projects designated into MPC are the SPIRE Canberra Hospital project and City to Woden light rail; the CIT campus development; and the Canberra Theatre redevelopment

• Delivering other whole-of-government infrastructure projects in partnership with other Directorates

MPC’s Light Rail projects are helping the ACT Government to deliver a modern, seamless transport systems that includes a light rail network being delivered over four stages. Light rail aims to provide incentives for people to use public transport and help manage congestion caused by population growth along the project corridor and across Canberra more broadly. Integrating light rail with urban development policies will maximise the broader economic and social benefits of investing in light rail and help achieve the objectives set out in the Transport Improvement Plan (2015).

The Gungahlin to City light rail service started in April 2019, with more than one million passenger boardings in the first three months.

The second stage will build light rail to Woden in two stages - City to Commonwealth Park (Stage 2A) and Commonwealth Park to Woden (Stage 2B).

With the business case for Stage 2A endorsed, work has commenced on extending light rail to Commonwealth Park. This 1.7 km extension, due to commence operations in 2024, will see three new stops added to the network and will help move an extra 3,000 passengers daily within the first year of operations.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

The ever-increasing populations of Australia and New Zealand’s major urban centres are placing huge strains on existing transport solutions in the forms of congestion, pollution and escalating costs. These competitive forces have generated public demand for better utilisation of existing transportation networks, via the implementation next-generation digital technologies, and have also resulted in governments investing billions of dollars in new transport projects and technologies.

The introduction of next-generation digital technologies into the transportation network means that transportation projects are becoming much more complex, not only in terms of operations but also in terms of design, construction and implementation.

This complexity also means that new engineering approaches must be adopted in the transport sector to ensure that these projects progress within time and budget and that the next-generation technology systems are fit for purpose and safe to operate and maintain.

Specialising in the provision of engineering and management services, Nova Systems provides industry and government with world class independent expertise in delivering complex projects and solving technologically challenging problems. To enable our clients to solve these problems, Nova Systems draws upon its experience in and knowledge acquired from a range of industries, including:

• Defence, Aerospace and Surveillance

• Energy and Resources

• Land and Emergency Services

• Cybersecurity

• Communications, Information and Space

For the transport sector, Nova Systems combines this experience and knowledge with best practices in systems engineering, utilising tailored digital engineering solutions, to provide a holistic view of the way complex systems interact and to assure the execution of capital works and the integration of technology, while complying with all applicable requirements.

Nova Systems works closely with its clients to INNOVATE new ideas, to INTEGRATE next-generation solutions, and to GENERATE value-adding outcomes for our clients.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

The Port of Brisbane is an important economic asset facilitating trade-related growth for Queensland and Australia. It is one of the country’s largest and most diverse multi-cargo ports, providing critical export and import links to world markets. Every year, approximately $50 billion in international trade is handled through the Port, which includes around 50% of Queensland’s agricultural exports and 95% of its motor vehicles and containers.

Geographically, Brisbane is Australia’s largest capital city port. The Port’s approximately 1860-hectare (ha) footprint comprises ‘wet and dry land’ designated for industrial and commercial uses, approximately 693ha of environmental areas, 8,200 metres of quayline, 30 operating berths and a 224 ha Future Port Expansion area which is being progressively developed to support future growth.

PBPL has property and facilities located in the Port of Brisbane suburb as well as Lytton, Bulwer Island and Pinkenba. Our employees are based at the Port Office, Operations Base, Brisbane Multimodal Terminal and onboard the Trailing Suction Hopper Dredge (TSHD) Brisbane.

Operational ‘Port Limits’, which include shipping channels, berth pockets and swing basins, extend north of Caloundra to the southern tip of Moreton Island and 16km up the Brisbane River to Breakfast Creek. The Port of Brisbane operates in an area of high environmental significance at the mouth of the Brisbane River and on the edge of Moreton Bay. It also borders Ramsar wetlands in the Moreton Bay Marine Park (a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention). It is separated from residential areas by buffer zones, mitigating potential impacts from the Port’s 24/7.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

The PTA runs all bus, train and ferry public transport services in the greater metropolitan area under the Transperth brand. It also operates public transport in regional centres under the TransRegional brand; road coach and rail passenger services to regional areas as Transwa; and administers and manages School Bus Services.

The PTA is also responsible for designing, building and maintaining transport infrastructure in WA – its Network and Infrastructure division manages, maintains and upgrades the metropolitan railway network – and for protecting the long-term viability of WA’s rail corridor and railway infrastructure.

Transperth’s fully-integrated network is centrally-planned and controlled. While its bus and ferry services (and parts of other operations such as cleaning, security and maintenance) are operated by contractors, the rail operations are in-house – Transperth Train Operations is responsible for the operation, security, railcar maintenance, and management of the urban rail passenger system

The urban rail system covers 180.8km of track with 72 stations on five lines: Joondalup (40.9km); Fremantle (19km); Midland (16km); Armadale/Thornlie (30.5km with a 3km spur to Thornlie); and Mandurah (71.4km). In 2018-19, TTO operated about 1085 services on an average weekday and 6852 services weekly. At June 30 2019, it had 330 railcars (48 two-car A-Series and 78 three-car B-Series sets) that can be coupled in sets of four-car or six-car trains.

Transwa employs 20 railcar drivers at East Perth and Bunbury to operate 14 diesel railcars in four services: The Prospector - daily (twice on Mondays and Fridays) each way between East Perth and Kalgoorlie; the Australind - two daily return services between Bunbury and Perth; the AvonLink - an early-morning weekday service from Northam to Midland, returning early each evening; and the MerredinLink - an all-stop return service between East Perth and Merredin on a Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Rio Tinto’s Australian operations have pioneered technologies that minimise our impact on the environment and improve safety and working conditions. In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, we own an integrated portfolio of iron ore assets: a world-class, integrated network of 16 mines, four independent port terminals, a 1,700 kilometre rail network and related infrastructure – all designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand. We are one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of iron ore.

In 2019, we launched the world’s first automated heavy-haul rail network – named AutoHaul™ – capable of moving about one million tonnes of iron ore a day. AutoHaul™ improves safety by reducing risk at level crossings and through automated responses to speed restrictions and alarms, eliminating the need to transport drivers to and from trains mid-journey, which in turn saves almost 1.5 million kilometres of road travel every year. It also improves cycle times by using information about network topography to calculate and deliver a safe, consistent driving strategy.

In Australia we directly employ over 19,000 people across a number of regions and towns, and we’re proud to be one of the largest employers of Indigenous Australians in the country. Our work

As an active community partner, we support community initiatives as diverse as education and training, childcare, health and wellbeing, and cultural heritage and environment protection.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Strukton Rail Australia provides a new category of railway asset management and engineering in Australia by combining strong local domain knowledge and technical expertise with 100 years’ experience of asset management in Europe. Our highly experienced Australian-based team who understand local clients and market conditions, enable insight to asset condition, performance and reliability - creating highly predictable rail operations for our customers.

When operating a rail network, data is critical.

Strukton utilises a data driven approach, capturing outputs from processes and systems to understand network deterioration and how it reacts to maintenance activities. Enabling optimised shutdowns and to re-forecast and ensure the maintenance planning and execution is aligned with the Asset Strategy and long-term investment in asset renewal and upgrades. Measurement data, asset configuration information, maintenance and renewal history, and track usage data can be combined to build a deterioration model for a railway network. These network states are a data driven representation of the “health” of the track infrastructure and enables the Network Response forecast to be refined to create more accurate predictive modelling outcomes and strategically improve the asset’s performance into the future.

Working in partnership with our clients to provide solutions.

Sophisticated condition monitoring technology, data management and analytics, are at the centre of Strukton’s approach and are now embedded into a new digital twin solution for rail – WillowRail. The digital twin unlocks new ways to engage with rail network assets by integrating existing disparate and isolated systems from multiple operational elements into one interface. WillowRail creates a single view of network performance, compliance and maintenance status, and is capable of delivering deep insights to owners and operators, live and in real time.

Strukton’s Safety Systems optimise the method of managing track possessions, make working on the railway infrastructure safer and significantly improve efficiency of maintenance windows.

COMPANY OVERVIEW

Sydney Trains is a NSW Government agency constituted under the Transport Administration Act 1988 and was established on 1st July 2013 to focus on improving service delivery for metropolitan train customers.

The vision is to keep Sydney moving by delivering safe, customer-focused, reliable and clean rail services. The aim is to contribute to the success of transport in NSW by running effective and efficient rail services, which exceed customers’ expectations, support growth and contribute to the broader community and the economy.

Sydney Trains is the operator of rail services across the metropolitan Sydney area, bounded by Berowra, Emu Plains, Macarthur and Waterfall. It operates under a Rail Service Contract with Transport for NSW. The contract stipulates the NSW Government’s expectations around service levels, and sets out how Sydney Trains and Transport for NSW will work cooperatively to address service alterations, community consultation, regular service reviews, performance standards and the handling of complaints.

Sydney Trains also operate the Rail Operations Centre and are responsible for the maintenance of assets including tracks, trains, signals, overhead wiring, stations and facilities. Sydney Trains also maintains trains and a large proportion of the infrastructure used by NSW TrainLink.
