ENGLISH- THE SEALED NECTAR MEMORIES OF THE PROPHET (PBUH)-AUTHOR- ISSAM DIAB

The Jews of Banu Quraiza c ould ha ve endured the sieg e muc h longer bec ause foo d

and wa ter were p lentifully ava ilab le a nd their strong holds we re g rea tly fortified , whereas

the Muslims we re in the w ild ba re land suffering a lot from c old a nd hunge r, let a lone too

much fatigue consequent on endless warfare operations that had started even before

the battle of Confederates. Nevertheless, this was a battle of nerves, for Allh had cast

fea r in the the Jews hea rts, and their mo ra le ha d almost c ollap sed espe c ially when t wo

Muslim heroes, Ali bin Ab i Talib and Az-Zuba ir bin Aww am [R] p roc eeded with Ali

swearing that he would never stop until he had either stormed their garrisons or been

ma rtyred like Ham za (a former Muslim ma rtyr).

In the light of this reluctance, they had nothing except to comply with the Messengers

judg em ent. The Me sseng er of Allh [pb uh] ordered tha t the men should ha ndcuffed ,

and this wa s done unde r the supe rvision of M uham ma d b in Sa lam ah Al-Ansa ri while the

wo men and c hildren w ere isolated in confinement. Thereupo n Al-Aws tribe interced ed

be gg ing the Prop het [pbuh] to be lenient towa rds them . He sugg ested that Sa d b in

Mua dh, a former ally, be de puted to give verdict a bo ut them, and they agreed .

Sa d m ea nwhile staye d b ehind in Mad inah due to a serious wo und he susta ined in the

Confederates Battle. He was summoned and brought on a donkey. On his way to the

Prophet [pbuh], the Jews used to exhort him to be lenient in his judgement on account

of fo rme r friend ship. Sa d rem ained silent but w hen they persisted he ut tered : "It is time

for Sa d not to be a fra id of the b lame of the blam ers." On he aring this dec isive a ttitude,

some of them returned to Ma dinah w aiting for a d espe rate do om.

On arrival, he alighted with the help of some men. He was informed that the Jews had

agreed to accept his verdict about them. He immediately wondered if his judgement

wo uld p ass on a ll the p eop le p resent, the Prop het [p buh] inc luded , turning his fac e a wa y

in hono ur of him. The rep ly wa s positive.

He decided that all the able-bodied male persons belonging to the tribe should be

killed, women and children taken prisoners and their wealth divided among the Muslim

fighters. The Prop het [p buh] a c c ep ted his judg eme nt saying that Sa d had ad judg ed by

the Command of Allh. In fact, the Jews deserved that severe punitive action for the

ugly treachery they had harboured against Islam, and the large arsenal they have

am assed and which c onsisted of one thousand and five hund red swo rds, two thousand

spea rs, three hundred armours and five hund red shields, all of which we nt into the hand s

of the M uslims. Trenc hes we re d ug in the b azaa r of Ma d inah and a numb er of Jew s

between six and seven hundred were beheaded therein. Hot beds of intrigue and

trea chery we re thus exterminated o nc e and for all.

Huyai, a c hief c riminal of w a r, a d evil of Bani Nad ir and Safiyah s fathe r, had joined the

ranks of Banu Quraiza when Quraish and Ghatfan defected, was admitted into the

aud ienc e o f the Prop het [p buh] w ith his hands tied to his nec k with a rop e. In aud ac ious

de fianc e, he de clared ob stinate e nmity to the Prop het [pb uh] but a dm itted that Allh s

Will wa s to b e fulfilled and add ed that he w as resigned to his fate . He w as ordered to sit

dow n, and wa s behea ded on the spot.

Only one woman of the Jews was killed because she had killed a Muslim warrior by

flinging a grind ing stone upo n him.

Ab u Lubaba sta yed tied for six nights. His wife used to untie him a t p rayer time s and thenhe t ied himself ag a in to the p ole. One e a rly morning, Allh the A ll-Forgiving revea led a

verse to the Messenger of Allh [pbuh] to the effect that Allh had turned to Abu

Lubaba with fo rg iveness. The Muslims rushed to relea se him b ut he insisted tha t the

Messenger of Allh [pbuh] himself do it. And this was done shortly before the morning

prayer.

This Ghazwah took place in the month of Dhul Qadah in the year five Hijri[Ibn Hisham

2/237,238; Sahih Al-Bukhari 2/590,591; Za'd Al-Ma 'ad 2/72-74; Mukhta sar See rat A r-Rasoo l p.287-290], and the sieg e

of Banu Qura iza s forts lasted for 25 days. The C ha pter of Confed erate s was reve a led

containing Allhs Words concerning the basic issues relating to the believers and

hypocrites during the battle of the Confederates, and the consequences of the

trea che ry and breac hing o f co venants by the Jews.
