FIRST ANNUAL AQUO-ThONThere are a lot of 24-hour mountain biking events, but our own first annual Aquo-Thon is different. Riders not only have to negotiate a technical single track, but they also have to blast through this beautiful scenery with the best spectators in the land. The winner is the person who completes the most laps. But all competitors are champions in this race, if you ask us.

the FiJi 50: A KAYAKERS DREAM!Fiji consists of more than 300 islands. Kayakers in this competition will visit 50 of them, many of which are not inhabited. The most focused racers will not investigate the rain forest or cobalt blue lagoons on these small land masses. But the curious will have a tough time resisting the urge to do some exploringor at least slip into the ocean to check out the Great Astrolabe Reef.

At the Aquo Crusher, more than 500 telemark skiers will throw climbing skins on their boards at the crack of dawn, climb to the top, and then race down the other side to the finish. Winning prize? Couples will be judged on skill, time on the dance floor, and overall enthusiasm. So rest up, pack up your dancing shoes and bring your partner and your A game. The six-hour Swingin Eternal sessions are about quality and quantity.

EDitors LEttEr Mark S.Getting out of bed is never easy and today was more difficult than usual, because we had to put the finishing touches on the magazine before sending it to the printer. Those days are always long and stressful, and sleeping through my alarm (damn snooze!), getting my car towed (silly street cleaning!), and not being able to get a cab (another convention in town!) didnt make matters any easier. Then I had a flash of inspiration: remembering the story I read about maximizing your lunch break, I decided to pedal to work. Sure, it wasnt lunch time, but the gist of the article was the importance of utilizing daily opportunities to get out in the world, be active, and explore something new. So, I got on my old-fashioned bike that had been collecting dust for months, aired up the tires, and hit the pavement. Thats when my day took a turn for the better. I saw streets that I had never seen before, realized that even donut lovers have not truly experienced the fried treat until they have gotten a waft of a fresh batch after a 30-minute pedal, and discovered theres a world between work and home that I never see when driving. Dont get me wrong: today was a long day. But riding an endorphin high and being stimulated by everything I saw made it an incredibly satisfying one. Even now, its almost midnight, and Im not even thinking of hitting the sack. I am excited to be swinging a leg over my bike and seeing what lies between my office and the sheets.

HER TRIP, OUR DIME

Last year Aquo Life held our annual The World Is Your Sandbox contest. Entrants told us why we should foot the bill for their round the world adventure in 250 words or less. Out of 9,882 entries, Jenny Ls was chosen.

It wasnt an easy decision to make, but teacher/artist/designer/ photographer and all around creative person had just nished a four year stint bringing arts to schools on Chicagos South Side which culminated in an impressive display of her students work. We wont lie and say that we werent a bit jealous, thinking about the adventure she has in front of her. Then we called her and everything

LOS ANgELES, CALIFORNIAGoodbye, home sweet home! Im glad I got to see the lotuses blooming before taking off...

bROOKLYN, NEW YORKManhattans great...but Brooklyn had a real independent spirit and lots of cool hangout spots!

shows that people with more on their plate eat more. Starve the body, and the mind is quick to follow. Give the body a little of what it wants without satiating it completely, and you have something different altogether: hunger. It can keep your creative cylinders firing all afternoon without ever longing for a pit stop. Were not sure why, but the relationship between your stomach and your will power is ruled by the entertainers motto: always leave them wanting a little more. Doing this successfully starts with one rule: no buffets. A little preparation goes a long way towards pulling off the quest to eat less. Its important to commit to this at the get-go, and the best way to do that is to get rid of the food youre not going to eat. Either ask for a doggie bag when ordering your meal or, if youre better-prepared or dont want to add a little something extra to the landfill, bring your own container. When the food arrives, slide the portion youre not going to eat into what the Brits like to call a take-away container, and put it out of your sight. Science is on your side: research If a little movement does the body good, a little more is better, and a whole lot is best. Going outdoors with your colleagues can be a great way to blow off steam during lunchtime. The options are endless. Kickball is more fun than golf, but not terribly taxing. Although its better in bigger groups, its easy to play with a few people if you can find an alleythe artificial funnel keeps the ball in play. Wiffle ball is another option, but be ready to hear the baseball diehards do impressions of their favorite announcers and players. If youre looking for a little more movement, consider soccer or ultimate. Ultimates rules are pretty simple, and players of varying skill levels can share the same field. The same goes for soccer. The key is to make sure people of similar levels are matched up against one another. No time for a shower after lunch? Baby wipes are a great stand-in.

Duchamp teaches us that whether youre in the loo or Louvre, theres art all around. Your mission, if you choose accept it, is to make something from items found in the trash or recycle bin. Defining these two caches is up to youyou can stick with the digital garbage dump on your desktop, or you can go unplugged and use objects that you find around the office and in the street. Regardless of media, the basic parameters are similar: desktop dumpster divers have to use the programs on their machines, but ripping songs from your music library is allowed. Artists can use supplies found around the office or workshop. But be careful with that acetylene torch, will you? Rules, guidelines, and deadlines should be decided upon before the challenge begins. Options are endless: this can be a personal quest or have many challengers; individuals or teams can compete. Some offices have reported ending the event with a Yankee-style swap. The key is to not take this too seriously. Its art for funs sake. Now, back to work!

How to work less, play more, and get a helluva lot done!

Daniel S.

Day in, day out, you stop at the same caf on the way into work, and get take-out from the same Thai place down the street on the way home. And you wonder why youre feeling bored? Sure, routine has a history with artists, designers, and writers: Marcel Proust worked in the same cork-lined cubby for a lifetime. If he got out more, maybe he wouldve finished editing his 3,200 page tome before his death. The back-story of those who mixed up their routine is far more interesting. Take Hunter Thompsonbest known for gobbling amphetamines by the fistful and washing them down with a stiff drink to get going. But if that didnt work, the gonzo writer knew enough to try something different. He would go for a quick run. Seducing the muse takes many forms, and even slight changes in your life can kick-start your creativity and add a new color to your work. Some options? A quick trip to the gym at mid-day, taking a disco nap after lunch, wearing noise-canceling headphones to drown out the sounds from the rest of the world, or even going with a different type of caffeine (we recommend Aquo, of course). Here are some details:

DO WhAT YOU LIKE, bUT DO IT MORE OFTEN Love going to the movies? Make sure you visit your local cinema at least once a week. Miss the time you spent in that little French town during junior year? Check out the scents, smells, and colors at the local farmers market. Does live music make you feel alive? Do a little homework and find out whats coming through town. As much as it sucks to miss your favorite band, dont forget about the great groups youve yet to findthe thrill of discovery shouldnt be left to A & R folks alone. Check out the local paper and see whos playing in the near future. And dont be intimidated by those too-much-time-on-theirhands music writers who have more than one MP3 player filled with music by bands that youve never heard of. Just go to the bands website to grab a sample. Toe-tapping? Good sign. A race for the fast-forward button? There are plenty of other bands on the way. The key is getting out more, not seeing every band on the bill or hearing every last song when you do go out. When it comes to getting out, pushing yourself out the door is the first priority. Its not always easy to do when youve had a long day; the DVR is loaded up, and couch is calling to you. But folks who think best or are re-charged by being out and aboutyou know who you are. Just make sure you get there. The rest will take care of itself.

This camouflaged wonder may look like hes napping. Hes actually at work and taking one for the team. Studies show a short snooze improves output and mental acuity.

sLeePiNG oN the Job Some companies have a bed on the premises so employees can take a siesta. Others send workers to a rented sleep space where they can grab a 20-minute power nap in a clean, safe pod that comes complete with a gentle wake-up alarm. A little shut-eye is good for the mind, and research shows it increases cognitive performance. But the key is to keep it short. If you hit REM sleep, youre likely to wake up more comatose than refreshed. gET AWAY FROM IT ALL AND FIND SOMEThINg NEW Theres a place close to home that you dont know. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to find that place and experience it fully. Want to fly solo? Thats your call: one of the freedoms of being a party of one is the ability to move quickly and decisively. Going tandem? Thats a bit different. It could be romantic or an adventure. Even Thelma and Louise had a good time until the very end. Either way, some rules for duos can add to the fun. One possibility: take turns choosing activitiesno kvetching. But remember if you make her go shot for shot with the locals at the Moosehead Lodge, you may spend the next day at a chick flick double feature, or answering Do I look fat in this? five million times, or [fill in your own personal hell]. Dont worry, she knows

TRICKINg YOUR SUbCONSCIOUS TO DO YOUR WORK FOR YOU If youre faced with a tough problem before leaving the oce, give a couple of seconds of thought to it while walking to the water cooler. Fill up a cup with liquid, head back to your desk, and drink half of it. If no solution presents itself immediately, thats fine. Thats exactly how its supposed to work. Write down the conundrum in a sentence or two, put it next to the glass, and leave the oce. When you get back, finish the drink, and see if you have any new approaches to the problem. The mind works in mysterious ways, and sometimes the subconscious can do the heavy lifting. But this isnt the only way to work without having to be at your desk. Another rule to test drive is to never leave the oce without knowing what youll have to do when you return. Starting a new project? Give thought to the different ways to approach it. Nearing the end of the job? Spend some time thinking about how to finish with a flourish. Bottom linewhen you leave your desk, have something you can drop right into when you return. Your eciency will benefit.

Always leave your workspace in a way that will allow you to pick-up where you left off when you return.

what it is. Libraries are Not Just For those WITh COUNTRY hOUSES Look around your workspace. What do you have within arms reach to rekindle your creative flame? Everyone should have a special volume that gets them going. It could be a collection of Bauhaus designs, a book of poetry, or an author whose creativity and talent is so contagious that it energizes you. It can even have for your soul in the title. But if it does, you may want to keep it under your desk. Put a Cork iN it: Go to a siLeNt RETREAT Meeting after meeting, a PDA that never stops buzzing, and all those calls to find out whats going on this weekend can be exhausting. Sometimes, isolation is the best thing for body and mind. And while youre out in the middle of nowhere, a beautiful nowhere, but nowhere nonetheless, why dont you listen to that librarian on your shoulder and keep quiet? What were talking about here is the silent retreat: a bunch of people getting together and not talking at all. Thats right, after you turn off your cell phone and handheld device, youll be able to meet lots of interesting new people and say nothing. Dont worry if you dont have a background in meditation, because although being quiet isnt easy, it doesnt take any additional training. Oddly, keeping to oneself is like running maintenance on your mindafter youre finished, youll likely find the clarity you had been missing. Silence was just what a big-time performance artist needed when she felt fragmented and creatively flat. She left her Chinatown loft, the hustle and bustle of lower Manhattan, and headed up north for some quiet. A lot of it. It wasnt easy. But when she came back, she was happy, ready to work, and had regained her concentration. The ideas? They flowed like maple syrup in the spring.

The urge to explore is a creative urge. What lures you away from home? Some will travel across the world to see the World Cup. Others plan their vacations around a film festival. And a few will chase an adrenaline high wherever it leads. Not sure where you fit in? Take this quiz. What is your dream weekend get-away? An opera followed by a fine meal and sheets with a thread count that needs a comma. Manning the BBQ and the keg at the biggest tailgating party in the world that precedes a double-header. Quality time with your dog, your friends, and a tent. My idea of a perfect car is: Like a black dress or a high-end pair of jeans in Los Angele ready for any social event. Good for a road-trip, with plenty of room for a hibachi and a cooler. Equipped with four-wheel drive to get me into the deep woods and out of deeper snow. You wake up late and you have to be at work in 30 minutes, not enough time to complete your daily routine. You: Shower, brush your teeth, and get to work a little late. Shower, brush your teeth, and ignore all speed limits and the Geneva Convention on the way to the oce, getting there in time. Brush your teeth, splash some water on your pits and scalp, make sure you have your climbing shoes for your gym session after work, and start driving. Dogs are: Not meant for city living. A four-legged vacuum, ready to suck up the tortilla chip or burrito that got away. Family. When was the last time you were actively involved in a team sport? Do ballet lessons count? Art Camp? Gymnastics for thespians? Yesterday. A long time ago, before I discovered the great outdoors. Art openings, film openings, and checking out bands are: The best part of my week. Sure, you own a few sets of cleats, each for a different sport, but youll often travel to see your favorite teams do battle. 51-72 points: Friend of Thoreau Its a miracle that you stuck around to take this quiz. Wait: you must be on a plane, right? Youre probably heading somewhere faraway and will get deep into the brush, desert, or mountains when you get there. Dont forget to write and to boil your water.
