© 2014 Aquinas Learning LLC Frequently Asked Questions Q. What subjects do you cover? A: Aquinas Learning is an integrated program that views knowledge as one body unified by the “Great Conversation” informed by our Catholic Faith. Topics covered in the conversation include Catechism, History, Science, Latin, Greek, a Timeline, Civics, Basic Math, and Geography. Our program focuses on refining their thinking, reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Q. What teaching method do you use? A: We don’t use a “method” as much as we use an approach, the classical approach or the natural approach to learning. We present the topic (or idea), the students perceive it with their senses and their mind, they absorb it through the use of memorization and disciplined inquiry, and finally, they re- present what they have learned in order to fortify their knowledge of the new idea or concept. Mentors and home educators bring additional relevance to the new concept by providing: more enhancements in class, field trips, read-aloud stories that embody the ideas, imitation and repetition with more opportunities for re-presentation. Q. Do you provide report cards and are you accredited? A. We are currently investigating the possibility of accreditation to address the needs of families in states where it is required. However, it is our belief that accreditation agencies don’t accurately assess whether an institution helps students to accumulate knowledge, retain knowledge or measure the growth in wisdom and virtue in the graduates. We provide templates for “Progress Reports” that mentors can use as a means to communicate the students’ progress in class. However, their use is completely at the discretion of the mentor or center director and is not a certificate of completion for the program. +J M J + Aquinas Learning at Home Home A Classical Approach – joining “the conversation” by discussing ideas, perceiving truths, memorizing facts and practicing skills which embody these truths to grow in wisdom and virtue. Our Philosophy and Mission Aquinas Learning is a classical home education mentoring program guiding students toward wisdom and virtue. Materials and online support are provided for students who are using our Aquinas Learning at Home curriculum. • Memorization & Discussion (History,

Catechism, Science, Geography, Timeline, Civics, Grammar, Math)

    • Discussion, contemplating the “should” question. Joining the “Great Conversation.”

    • Read-alouds – gain poetic knowledge • Practice elocution (whether on paper or oral

presentations) • Language arts: skills of thinking, writing,

reading, listening and speaking • Wondering about the nature, purpose, and

propriety of things Students study the liberal arts and discuss the great ideas of Western civilization, informed by the truths of the Catholic Faith. Based on this firm foundation, they build a disciplined mind by honing the skills of reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking. In doing so, they not only develop a taste and affection for what is true, good, and beautiful but they also learn to express it. We expect our students to grow in wisdom and virtue so that they will apply right reason to right action following God’s will for them.
