Wading Pool and Spray Pad Rules

• For children 12 years of age and under.

• Children under 7 years of age must have a parent/guardian 12 years of age or older actively supervising them.

• Appropriate swimwear is required (i.e. swimsuit, shorts).

• Wading Pool Attendant must be on duty while swimming. (wading pools only)

• Children who are not toilet trained are required to wear a leak-proof swim garment.

• No horse play. This includes, but is not limited to: running, climbing structures, spitting water.

• No smoking within 30 m (City of Winnipeg BY-LAW NO. 62/2011).

• No alcohol/drugs.

• No glass.

• No large inflatable toys, water guns or sand.

• No bicycles/skateboards/scooters/in-line skates, etc.

• No abusive/profane language.

• Animals are not permitted, with the exception of service animals.

• Do not drink pool water or water from spray features.

• Footwear is recommended.

• Persons infected with a communicable disease or having open sores cannot enter the water.

Slide Rules • Children 12 years of age and under only.

• Children under 7 years of age must be actively supervised when using the slide.

• Feet first only.

• One child permitted at a time.

• No playing at the bottom of the slide.

Spray Pads are unsupervised• We recommend that children under 12 years of age be

accompanied by a parent/guardian.

• Adults must be accompanied by children at the following combined spray pads/wading pools:

• Central Park

• Machary Park

• Sturgeon Heights

• Vimy Ridge Memorial Park

• Westdale

• West Kildonan

Role of a Wading Pool Attendant

• The role of the Wading Pool Attendant is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience at the wading pool.

• The Wading Pool Attendant works with patrons to ensure an understanding of the pool rules.

• The Wading Pool Attendant has complete authority with the emphasis on safety first.

• If, for any reason, the Wading Pool Attendant must leave the pool area, they will clear the wading pool of all patrons until they have resumed visual contact of the pool.

Wading pools have a maximum depth of 45–60 cm (18–24 in.)

Active Supervision

Role of Parent/Guardian/ Group Leader

• Children under 7 years of age must be accompanied in the water by a parent/guardian/group leader at a ratio of 1:4 (1 guardian to 4 children).

• You must be within arm’s reach of children.

• Supervision of children is required at all times.

• You are responsible for the behaviour of the children that you bring to the wading pool.

We understand the importance for families and friends to capture precious moments in a picture. To ensure it is a positive experience for all patrons, specific procedures are required when using video and photographic equipment such as cameras, video cameras, camera phones, etc. For more details, please consult the Wading Pool Attendant.

The use of all technological devices is prohibited in washrooms, change rooms and locker rooms.

Please note: Washroom facilities are not always available on site at spray pads.

Closing ProceduresDraining of the wading pool is coordinated with the time the pool closes. Staff begin draining the pool prior to closing and as a result, there will not be a full basin of water at closing time. Children will be permitted to stay in the wading pool while it is draining under the following conditions:

• Children do not play near or sit on the drain.• There is no whirlpool present.• The Wading Pool Attendant does not have to leave the wading

pool area to attend to other facility requirements.

Wading Pool ClosuresA wading pool may be closed if any of the following conditions arise:

• The weather turns to thundershowers during the day.• Lightning and/or thunder are present.• Water, electricity, access to a phone for emergencies, first aid kit

or washroom facilities are not available.• Foreign material is found in the wading pool water such as glass,

fecal matter, vomit, animals or blood, which can affect pool water clarity and quality.

• Maintenance issues.• The wading pool has not met Manitoba Public Health Act

requirements.

Groups using Wading PoolsWading pools are free public facilities. We do not take bookings at any wading pool for group events, such as birthday parties. Groups are welcome to come during regular scheduled hours if you wish to have an event onsite. Capacity restrictions, group ratios and supervision requirements must be met for all group use.

When using City of Winnipeg aquatic facilities, groups are required to adhere to all rules. The Wading Pool Attendant has the right to allow or prevent access to any part of the wading pool or the pool in its entirety should there be any safety concerns regarding the group’s use of the facility. If wading pool is at capacity, groups will be required to wait until space becomes available.

Help prevent pool closures

Please do not feed children 1 hour prior to swimming to avoid upset stomach

Please ensure that children are taken to the washroom prior to swimming and frequently take breaks during swimming

Non-toilet trained infants / toddlers & participants who experience incontinence must wear the appropriate leak-proof garments

Participants should not swim if they feel ill, have an upset stomach, diarrhea or have vomited in the past day

Be sure to change diapers in the change rooms (not pool side) and dispose of them properly

Wash your hands after using the toilet or changing diapers

Pool closures are a result of the contamination of pool water by fecal matter and vomit or reduced water clarity.

Water quality must be within the appropriate range set by the Public Health Act before swimmers can enter the pool.

Non-heated outdoor pools are free public facilities. We do not book birthday parties or any other type of event at any of the non-heated outdoor pools.

At all City of Winnipeg pools, entry requirements and capacity restrictions apply.

Admissions are first-come, first-served. As lineups will likely build quickly, arrive early

to beat the heat and the crowds!Pool capacity is determined by the Manitoba Public Health Act and City of Winnipeg rules. When facilities are at the maximum bather capacity, admissions will be stopped. Customers may choose to line up and will be admitted as others leave the facility.

Be prepared to wait if there are line-ups. Bring water, sunscreen and a hat.
