aquatherm Firestop-Sprinkler Pipe Systemaquatherm firestop offers the user an extensiverange of pipes and fittings for the installation offire sprinkler systems*.

The system is based on a fibre reinforced poly-propylene pipe (faser composite pipe) produ-ced in a multi-layer extrusion process.

The material fusiolen® PP-R (80) FS FS used forthe production of these pipes, is a plastic whoseprofile of properties is designed for the specialdemands of the field of application. Both theinstaller’s request for an easier processing andthe demand for highest possible safety in laterapplication was taken into account during itsdevelopment.

- corrosion-proofPrevents the clogging up of the sprinkler with corrosion products, by this ensuring a long, low-maintenance service life as well as trouble-freefunction of the system.

Pipes and fittings are certified under the registrationno. 684a of LPCB according to guideline LPS 1260for the use as pipe system for sprinkler installations.

The fabrication of pipes and fittings is effectedunder highest quality demands on most moderninjection moulding machines and extrusion lines.The high quality of our products is besides ensuredby extensive receiving and production controls.

ProcessingFusion technique

By the fusion of pipe and fitting the plastic willmelt to a homogeneous material unit.

Pipe and fitting are heated by means of specificwelding tools and subsequently just joined; finished!

Double material thickness at the joint – thatmeans double safety at the otherwise criticalpoint of a pipe system.

By the fusion technique of aquatherm you willeasily get a lasting, leakproof connection.

Weld in saddle technique

Branches can easily be made by weld insaddles, evenat a later stage of installation. Byusing weld-in saddles you will besides save mate-rial and time.

Whereas in case of tees three joints are to beprocessed, work is limited to mounting thesaddle and the branch pipe only in case of thesaddle.

Simply drill the pipe; warm up the saddle, pipewall and curvature; connect the elements.Finished!

General rules for the use of plastic pipes as sprinkler lines (according to LPCB)

In connection with the use of aquatherm firestop,the following is to be observed:

» Use of plastic pipe and fittings is subject to water authority agreement for the territory concerned.

» LPCB Approved quick response sprinklers shall be used with exposed (i.e. fire exposure) plastic pipe and fittings.

» Plastic pipe and fittings are suitable for use only with wet pipe systems.

» Care should be exercised to ensure that joints are adequately cured, in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instruc-tions, prior to pressurisation.

» Plastic pipe and fittings shall not be installed outdoors.

» Not suitable for drinking water.

» Where plastic pipe and fittings are exposed(i.e. fire exposure), the system shall be installed close to a flat ceiling construction.

» Sprinkler systems which employ plastic pipe and fittings shall be designed where possible to ensure there are ‘no flow’ sections of pipe-work in the event of sprinkler operation.

» The system of pipes must be installed in accordance with the aquatherm installati-on instructions, which include the LPCB conditions of use agreed with aquatherm.

» The maximum normal ambient temperature of use shall not exceed 70° C.

» The products shall only be installed by LPCB Certificated or Registered Installing compa-nies (see Part 5, Section 1A and 1B above) orby firms outside the UK who can provide evi-dence of personnel training in the installation of the product. It is recommended that firms engaged in the installation of this product also be Certificated to ISO 9000.

FusionPart A: Mounting of the tools

1. IMPORTANT!

Only use original Fusiotherm®-welding devices and Fusiotherm®-welding tools.

2. Assemble and tighten the cold welding tools manually.

3. All welding tools must be free from impurities.Check if they are clean before assembling.If necessary clean the welding tools with a nonfibrous, coarse tissue and with spirit.

4. Place the welding tools on the welding de-vice that there is full surface contact betweenthe welding tool and the heating surface.Welding tools over Ø 40 mm must always be fitted to the rear bore of the heating surface.

5. Plug in the welding device. Depending onthe ambient temperature it takes 10-30 minutesto heat up the heating surface.

Part A: Heating up Phase

6. During the heating up phase tighten the welding tools carefully with the clamp.

Take care that the tools lie completely on theheating surface. Never use pliers or any otherunsuitable tools, as this will damagethe coatingof the welding tools.

7. The necessary temperature to weld the Firestop-system is 260 °C. Acc. to DVS-Welding Guidelines the temperature of thewelding device has to be checked at itstool before starting the welding process. This has to be done with a fast indicating surfacetemperature measuring instrument or alter-natively with a Fusiotherm®-thermocolour pencil.(see “Fusion part B, item 2”)

ATTENTION: First welding – five minutes afterreaching the welding temperature!

Part A: Handling

8. A tool change on a heated device requiresanother check of the welding temperatureat the new tool (after its heating up).

9. If the device has been unplugged, i. e. du-ring longer breaks, the heating up processhas to be restarted (from item 6).

10.After use unplug the welding device and letit cool down. Water must never be used to cool the welding device, as this would des-troy the heating resistances.

11.Protect Fusiotherm®-welding devices and tools against impurities. Burnt particles may lead to an incorrect fusion. The tools may be cleaned with Fusiotherm®-cleansing cloths,Art.-No. 50193. Always keep the welding tools dry. If necessary, dry them with a clean, non fibrous tissue.

12.For perfect fusion, damaged or dirty weldingtools must be replaced, as only impeccabletools grant a perfect connection.

13.Never attempt to open or repair a defectivedevice. Return the defective device for repair.

14.Check the operating temperature of Fusio- therm®- welding devices regularly by means ofsuitable measuring instruments.

FusionPart A: Guidelines

15.For the correct handling of welding machines the following must be observed. General Re-gulations for Protection of Labour and Pre-vention of Accidents and particularly the Regulations of the Employers’ Liability Insu-rance Association of the Chemical Industry regarding Machines for the Processing of Plastics, chapter: "Welding Machines and Welding Equipment".

16.For the handling of Fusiotherm®-welding ma-chines, devices and tools please observe

. General Regulations DVS 2208 Part 1 of theGerman Association for Welding Engineering,Registered Society (Deutscher Verband für Schweißtechnik e.V.).

Part B: Checking of Devices and Tools

1. Check, if the Fusiotherm®-welding device andtool correspond to the guidelines “Fusion Part A”.

2. All used devices and tools must have reached the necessary operating tempe-rature of 260° C. This requires acc. to “Fusion Part A, item 8” a separate test, which is indis-pensable (DVS-Welding Guidelines):

Suitable measuring instruments have to facilitatea temperature measurement of up to 350° Cwith a high accuracy.

Alternatively it is also possible to check the wel-ding temperature with the Fusiotherm®-thermo-colour pencil. The application of the special ther-mocolour chalk in the aluminium pen to heatedsurfaces enables an exact reading with a toleranceof +/- 5 K.

Application:

After the temperature pilot lamp of the weldingdevice has shown the end of the heating upperiod, put a firm chalk line on the heated exter-nal surface of the welding tool. The colour mustchange within 1 - 2 seconds.

If the temperature is too high, the colour willchange immediately and if it is too low (below260° C) it will change after 3 or more seconds.

If the colour does not change within 1 - 2 se-conds another temperature test has to be car-ried out.

FusionPart B: Preparation for the Fusion

3. Cut the pipe at right angles to the pipe axis.Only use Fusiotherm®-pipe cutters or other sui-table cutting pliers. Take care that the pipe axis is free from burrs or cutting chips and remove if necessary.

4. Mark the welding depth at the end of the pipe with the enclosed pencil and template.

5. Mark the desired position of the fitting on thepipe and / or fitting.

The auxiliary markings on the fitting and theuninterrupted line on the pipe could be usedas a help.

Pipes and fittings of the dimensions Ø 75 to 125 mm may only be welded with welding deviceArt.-No. 50141 (or with machine Art.-No. 50147).On using the Fusiotherm®-welding machine Art.-No.50147 a separate operating instruction has tobe observed.

ATTENTION:The heating time starts, when pipe and fittinghave been pushed to the correct weldingdepth on the welding tool.

8. After the stipulated heating time quickly re-move pipe and fitting from the welding tools.Join them immediately, and without turning,until the marked welding depth is covered by the bead of PP from the fitting.

ATTENTION:

Do not push the pipe too far into the fitting,as this would reduce the bore and in an extreme case close the pipe.

9. The joint elements have to be fixed during thespecified assembly time. Use this time to correct the connection. The correction is only restricted to the alignment of pipe and fitting.Never turn the elements or align the connec-tion after the processing time.

10.After the cooling period the fused joint is readyfor use.

The result of the fusion of pipe and fitting is aninseparable material joining of the system ele-ments.

FusionPart C: Weld in Saddels

1. Before commencing the welding process,check whether the Fusiotherm®-welding de-vices and tools meet the requirements of “Fusion Part A”.

2. The first step is to drill through the wall of thepipe at the point intended for the outlet usingthe Fusiotherm®-drill.

3. The welding device/saddle welding tool musthave reached the required operating tem-perature of 260 °C (check with referenceto “Fusion Part B, item 2”).

4. The welding surfaces have to be clean and dry.

5. Insert the heating nozzle on the concaveside of the weld in saddle tool into the holedrilled in the side wall of the pipe until the toolis completely in contact with the outer wall ofthe pipe. At the same time the weld in saddlenozzle is inserted into the heating sleeve untilthe saddle surface is up against the convex side of the welding tool. The heating time of the elements is generally 30 seconds.

6. After the welding tool has been removed, theweld in saddle nozzle is immediately insertedinto the heated, drilled hole. The weld insaddle should then be pressed on the pipefor about 15 seconds. After being allowed tocool for 10 minutes the connection can beexposed to its full loading. The appropriate branch pipe is fitted into the sleeve on the Fusiotherm®-weld in saddle using conventional fusion technology.

By fusing the weld in saddle with the pipe outersurface and the pipe inner wall the connectionreaches highest stability.

The Fusiotherm®-welding machine was especial-ly developed for stationary welding of pipe andfittings with an external diameter of 50 to 125mm. This machine is equipped with a hand crankto facilitate a precise pre-assembly of compli-cated installation parts.

The necessary operating instructions are enclo-sed with the welding machine.

Following DVS 2207 part 11: At outdoor temperatures below+ 5 °C heating time will be increased of about 50 %. Thegeneral guidelines for heated tool socket welding acc. toDVS 2207 part 11 are applied hereupon.
