Aquaponic systems: An overview of aquaponic system components, system types and an exploration of the versatility of aquaponics; backyard systems and domestic economics. Practical: Tour of the Bait Ali aquaponic facility 3. Water chemistry 1: The nitrogen cycle and nutrient flows. Practical: Water quality monitoring – test kit use 4. Water chemistry 2: pH and alkalinity, other parameters and water quality troubleshooting. Practical: Exploring pH 5. Introducing fish: Anatomy, life cycles and reproductive strategies of fish; species profiles of some suitable aquaponic fish. 6. Fish health: Prevention, recognition and treatment of fish health parasites and pathogens. 7. Fish management: Calculating stocking densities and feed rates; managing fish harvests; transportation, quarantine and handling of fish. Practical: Fish handling and weighing; performing fish health checks; performing salt baths 8. Introduction to plants: Anatomy, life cycles and reproductive strategies of plants; species profiles of some suitable aquaponic crops. 9. Plant health and nutrition: Nutritional requirements of plants; prevention recognition and treatment of plant parasites and pathogens, including an overview of principles of companion planting and of aquaponicssafe nutrients and pesticides Practical: Preparation and use of aquaponics safe nutrients and pesticides.
