COLLEGE STUDENT’S UNION

REPORT 2010-11

1) The activities of the union were conceived with a view to inculcate leadership quality among students with proper perspective. All the activities of the college union revolved around this fulcrum and it is because of this view the college union took extra effort to host and conduct the D-Zone youth festival of the University of Calicut in the college.

2) The College Union associated with the efforts of PTA and the teaching and non-teaching staff of the college, for the fund mobilisation campaign for youth festival, which collected Rs. 177,000 (Rupees One Lakh Seventy Seven thousand only) for meeting the expense related to the participation in university youth festivals.

3) The activities of the college union have been inaugurated by Prof. Ramesh Varma, HOD of Drama, Sree Sankara University for Sanskrit, Kaladay. He is a well known drama and cine artist also. The noted exponent of Nangyakoothu, Prof Usha Nangyar was the chief guest.

4) The fine arts club and its activities were inaugurated by the noted Kathakali exponent Prof. Kalamandalam Subramanian. He has demonstrated and explained few Kathakali Mudras also. Noted folklore lyricist and musician Engandiyoor Chandrasekharan was the chief guest.

5) The college union conducted an exhibition of old issues of the college magazine to provide a glimpse of the past activities and events of the college.

6) A book fair with low priced books was also conducted by the college union to cater the needs of students.

7) The college union was instrumental in bringing the D-Zone youth festival of the University of Calicut to the college for the first time in its history. The college union led from the front and made the festival a grand gala success. The festival infused great enthusiasm and vigour among students and motivated tremendously.

8) The college participated in the festival in a major manner. Around 80 students participated in the D-Zone festival by representing the college. The college competed in seven group items. They were Group Dance (Women), Parichamuttu, Group Song, Folk Orchestra, Mappilapattu, Drama (Malayalam) and Mime. In group dance the college team secured first, second and third prizes in Parichamuttu, Group Dance (Women) and Drama (Malayalam) respectively. In Folk Dance (Women), Ms Dinia PS secured first place in a keenly fought out competition. In percussion eastern the college secured second and third prizes. All in all, the college garnered 27 points and came ninth in the festival where around 60 colleges participated.

Page 90: AQAR 2010-11 · f) Jayasree Paul Economics Minor Project 6. Internal Resources generated: Financial resource generation from the institution is mostly from contributions to the Parent

90

9) In the inter-zone youth festival of the University of Calicut, the Parichamuttu and Group Dance (women) teams represented the D-Zone and secured third place in both items. It was a remarkable and notable achievement given the rural background of the college. Best Practise The college union activities are conducted in a such a manner that the various activities result in academic discussion of various aspects of its activities and eventually result in social consciousness by realising that every activity has its own resonance and repercussions upon the society and the student need to comprehend this vital yet soul stirring aspect of human interventions. For instance, the long practise in the youth festival of University of Calicut regarding the dance competition was to organise “Group Dance” for men and women. But in the youth festivals organised by the Association of Indian Universities for Zonal and All India Inter-Zone youth festivals, the item is classified as “Folk Dance or Tribal Dance”. Theoretically, the view of the Association of Indian Universities is ideal and logical as under the rubric “Group Dance”, any dance form performed in group is being compelled to accept where undesirable elements are imposed upon students like cinematic/disco/western dance numbers. In this context, the college union took another yet rebellious stand by following the guidelines of the Association of Indian Universities and choreographed original Rajasthani folk dance with the help of Prof. (Dr.) C Venugopalan Nair, (Head of the Dept of Dance, Faculty of Performing Arts, Sree Sankarachrya University of Sanskrit, Kalady) and performed it in the youth festival and secured second place in the D-Zone youth festival and Third place in the Inter Zone youth festival of the University of Calicut.
