Introduction to APTRA Advance XFSWhat is APTRA Advance XFS?

What is APTRA Advance XFS? 1

APTRA Advance XFS is a 32-bit run-time platform which gives developers a powerful vendor-independent API to create applications for Self-Service Terminals (SSTs). But what makes it so special? NCR recognises that the industry is driven by market forces; trends indicate that software which allows users access to the extensive features offered by the most popular of PC operating systems will be best suited for the future demands of the customer. Compliance with de facto industry standards for software interfaces is seen as essential.

APTRA Advance XFS uses the device-independent CEN XFS standards, as published by the European Committee for Standardisation. This supports a wide range of retail banking peripherals, enabling devices such as cash dispensers, card readers, PIN PAD entry devices, printers and so on, to interface with your Windows-based applications.

Being device-independent, APTRA Advance XFS will allow you to deploy new services and offerings more quickly at reduced development costs, providing hooks to handle a mixed vendor base with a single software application, work smarter and exploit cross-channel re-use.

Compliance with industry standards maximises re-use potential, protects self-service investment and leverages industry best practices.

Figure 1-1 shows how APTRA Advance XFS fits into the standard architecture of an SST hardware platform. As you can see from this, it operates with PC and SST components to provide a complete run-time

Introduction to APTRA Advance XFSCustomer Requirements

Customer Requirements 1

In line with changing market trends, the following areas are perceived as key points in the needs of today’s customer, and have influenced the final design of APTRA Advance XFS.

Open Systems 1

The concept of open systems is now becoming a commercial reality. An open system is one in which software and hardware products from different vendors can be mixed and matched without relying on proprietary products, in effect releasing the customer from dependency on one supplier at all levels of the development and production processes. APTRA Advance XFS’s support for an industry-standard operating system and peripherals offers customers a wide choice of approach to all their developments.

GUIs and Browsers 1

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) and more recently the Browser are the most popular and sophisticated methods of display and control for various mainstream operating systems. Applications written to use a particular operating system automatically take advantage of the GUI or Browser’s native features. APTRA Advance XFS has been designed to work with the GUI/Browser environment your operating system provides, both with the supplied system utilities and with your own applications.

Features of APTRA Advance XFS 2

The following pages outline the major features and benefits of APTRA Advance XFS.

Introduction 2

APTRA Advance XFS, in conjunction with the Windows NT operating system, provides the customer application with an industry-standard environment. This makes available a set of open interfaces to generic computing facilities such as communications, networking, file systems, database access and many others.

Through this architecture, APTRA Advance XFS provides the functionality to support the use and maintenance of self-service devices in an unattended self-service environment. Applications can access self-service functionality through one of the following methods:

● The CEN XFS API● Device Status Management● CEN XFS also allows a system to be placed in Vendor

Dependent Mode (VDM) through the VDM Service Provider. On an NCR SST, this allows access to the APTRA Self-Service Support System Application, which gives operators and customer engineers access to maintenance functionality.

This list may be extended in the future.

Figure 2-1 illustrates a typical customer application in a CEN XFS environment.

Application Interfaces 2

APTRA Self -Service Support APIs provide conventional access methods to all of its functionality for developers creating customer applications. Essentially, the product provides the ability to drive and maintain SSTs. Functionality includes the following:

● Application interfaces to make use of self-service devices (CEN XFS)

● Application interface to obtain device status and fault management

The APIs adhere to the _stdcall calling convention. This means that applications developed using any language which supports _stdcall (such as Visual C++ and most other programming languages) can use it directly. Applications written in languages not meeting

this convention require an additional layer to bridge the interface.

CEN XFS 2

CEN XFS provides a general device-independent interface for Windows-based applications to access self-service devices that are unique to terminals in the financial and self-service markets. Since these devices are often complex, difficult to manage and proprietary, the development of a standardised interface from Windows-based applications and the Windows NT operating system can offer application developers immediate enhancements to productivity and flexibility.

Device Status Management API 2

The Device Status Management (DSM) API provides an interface to device and module related functionality such as the following:

● Looking up a device handle● Getting a list of all device handles in the system● Querying operational details of a device● Getting a list of module IDs for a specific device● Querying operational details of a module● Querying the operational state of a module● Making a fault ID from a module state● Querying action details for a device● Resetting the operational state of a module● Getting a description of a device, module, state or

Standard APIs 2

All native operating system features, such as file access, security, communications, internationalisation and native GUIs are available to a customer application through the Win32 interface. In fact, APTRA Advance XFS does not provide a proprietary interface to the SST front screen. Instead, all interfacing with users is done via the standard GUI or Browser. As a discrete subsystem, APTRA Advance XFS has no effect on the operational characteristics of the host operating system (apart from suppressing pop-ups normally displayed by Windows NT’s built-in Exception Handling).

APTRA Exception Handling 2

The vendor-independent Exception Handling components of APTRA Advance XFS prevent the suspension of operations on an SST by intercepting and dealing with exceptions and automatically restarting normal operations if necessary.

Exception Handling deals with critical errors such as processor exceptions and memory protection violations, operating system exceptions, device exceptions, kernel level exceptions, catastrophic software problems, persistent failures and power failures.

Application Development Environments 2

APTRA Advance XFS supports the use of all industry standard ADEs such as Microsoft Visual Studio.

APTRA Self-Service Support System Application 2

The System Application provides users with an interface to all maintenance and configuration functions.

The application is for use by customer engineers (CEs) and operators. After installation, it can be used to verify correct operation of an SST, to set up user-specific and machine-specific configuration and for performing some basic maintenance functions.

In summary, the features provided by the System Application are as follows:

● Configuration of certain device-specific properties and system information

● Basic maintenance functions● Diagnostics● NT event logs

NT event logs contain application, system and security events, and can be saved to diskette from the System Application.

Software, device and communication event logs and service tallies can be displayed, printed and saved to diskette.

Access to specific CE diagnostics is restricted to authorised persons via a key diskette.

The System Application can be started and stopped in a number of ways. The system can enter Vendor Dependent Mode by using the VDM service provider. NCR supplies a VDM-aware application called VDA (Vendor Dependent Application). When the VDA receives notice that the system has entered Vendor Dependent Mode, it starts the APTRA Self-Service Support System Application automatically.

The System Application can also be stopped and started from the Desktop on machines with a monitor attached.

Further detailed information can be obtained from the Programmer’s Reference on-line help system.

For more information about the System Application itself, see the System Application User Guide.

Third-Party Product Support 2

One of the key benefits of using APTRA Advance XFS is the ability to add third-party software and hardware to an SST system. Typically these components would be used as stand-alone modules. However, if it was a requirement to have a third-party component integrated into the System Application (for local management) or SNMP (for remote management), the customer should contact their local NCR representative.

Note: Correct operation of uncertified third-party products on SSTs cannot be guaranteed because of the range of diverse products available. Technical support for third-party programs and peripherals must be sought from the original supplier or obtained through standard support routes, such as specialist support houses, negotiated support contracts and on-line services. In addition, SSTs must be tested for electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC) approval if any third-party hardware is added.

Features of APTRA Advance XFSSNMP Agent

SNMP Agent 2

For network management and trap handling based on the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), the APTRA Self-Service Support SNMP Agent 2.1 is supplied with APTRA Advance XFS.

SNMP Agent 2.1 is based on two well-established standard protocols: SNMP v1.0 and the Desktop Management Interface (DMI) 2.0.

The agent enables remote access to the data available on an SST about devices and their components and services.

SNMP traps can be forwarded to one or more management stations when state changes or other significant events occur. Users can decide how much information is to be forwarded and which management stations are to receive it.

In addition, the management stations can query the SST to retrieve information about the devices, for example, their operational state, and to change data values.

The agent supports Unicode and ANSI formats, and dial-up connections. It is automatically installed and can be pre-configured to meet user requirements.

The APTRA Self-Service Support, SNMP Agent 2.1 Reference Manual gives details of the standards on which the agent is based, the definitions used, the data values that can be queried and modified, and the information that can be forwarded as traps.

The following table illustrates the minimum and recommended configurations of PC hardware platform required to operate APTRA Advance XFS’s run-time subsystem on the supported operating system. Please note that hardware requirements can be different for country-specific versions of the operating system and may change with new releases. The data shown below represents requirements current at the time of publication.

Table A-1 Hardware Requirements

* All new SSTs should be ordered with a minimum of 64 MB RAM.

In addition, Self-Service Personality Boards must be installed and an un-interruptible power supply (UPS) is recommended.

Installation of Windows NT Workstation operating system, the platform’s subsystem and any other third-party software requires a standard PC user interface (VGA compatible display module, local PC keyboard and pointing device) on the SST, unless the Unattended Installation method is used (in which case a local PC keyboard is required).

Other factors may also influence the hardware requirements. These factors include the following:
