1 What’s New? A Message from John Hibble Greetings, Aptos History Museum members! The Aptos History Museum invites you to a great summer party. The museum serves residents, visitors and teaches local history to our third grade classes. The Aptos History Museum has no paid staff. Everyone is a volunteer. But, even though our landlord has been generous, the museum still has to pay annual rent of almost $10,000. That’s where you and the Seascape Sports Club come in. During the Comerica Challenger tennis tournament, August 3-11, the museum puts on the Friday night party for the quarter finals, center court match. The party on the pool deck is the annual fundraiser for the museum’s rent. Tickets include world class tennis, delicious food from amazing local res- taurants, fine wines and beers, a silent auction, a craft fair with local vendors, and live music. You can get tickets for just the tennis at the sports club, or you can get tickets from the Aptos History Museum and have the tennis and the whole party added for no extra charge. Help to keep the museum open and to provide a sense of the great his- tory of our community and have a great time to boot. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 at the door. Call 688-1467 for tickets or stop by the Aptos Chamber. The event is August 9th, 5:30 - 8 pm. The theme is Hoedown for History. Western, casual or tennis wear, just be there! [See flier on back page!] The new Aptos History photo book will also be for sale at the Comerica Challenger or the Museum. Don’t miss out. They are going fast! Thank you for your continued support and see you on Friday, August 9 at Seascape Sports Club! -John Hibble Aptos History Museum Board Member Inside this issue: Aptos Historian Spring/Summer 2013 - Volume #1 - Issue #3 1. History Sail on the Chardonnay IIThe afternoon of Thursday, May 16 was a beautiful

day for a history sail on the bay aboard the Chardonnay II, a 70 foot sailing yacht. The after-noon charter was split between the Pajaro Valley Historical Association and the Aptos History Museum. Entertainment was provided by the guest speaker tag team of Sandy Lydon, famous historian, and Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Long Marine Laboratory at UC Santa Cruz. The stories were fascinating. The food and beverages provided by the committees were wonderful and the sea was calm and the weather warm. The event sold out overnight. If you did not get a chance to go, make sure you sign up early for our next great party. Thanks for everyone’s support! -John Hibble

the town of Salinas?

He also moved several whole buildings from Aptos to Spreckels and

moved his sugar factory too.

May, 23 Frederick A, Hihn’s Aptos Mill opened on Trout Gulch creek, just above its junction with Valencia Creek. It was capable of producing between 30-to-40-thousand board-feet of lumber per day. The mill was moved to Valencia in 1885.

Yappy HourOn Saturday, June 29, a group of history

buffs and their pooches met at the Rio Del Mar Esplanade to walk and learn the history of the area. The history of the concrete ship, Palo Alto, was provided by Bob Wall who included factual accounts as well as possible tall tales. Next, the group was regaled with the story of the hermit of Seacliff who had a 1925 shootout with the Sheriff and the Under Sheriff which left all three dead. Dick Garwood told this extraordinary story and Dick actually lives on the former hermit’s property. Lastly, John Hibble told the history of the Rio Del Mar flats from the Indians until present day. The tour was followed by a special lunch at Café Rio. Great fun! -John Hibble
