Welcome to the

Vision BuiltAtlantic Paddle source was created in the hopes of promoting suP along the Atlantic Coast in such a way as to provide a tight-knit community based on friendly gathering, education, and communication. our number one goal is to facilitate this environment through our organized clubs, meetups and educa-tional resources. We are the source for all things suP.

Here’s what we’re not... We’re not a shop. We don’t have regular office hours because we’re paddling, working out, racing and doing fun stuff on and off our boards. We use everything we promote and sell, and always will. We have fun on our boards and want you to know the limitless fun and stoke a stand up paddleboard provides.

our Vision is Built Around you.

HoW did you first get into PAddling:

like many people, i jumped on a borrowed board for the first time and loved it. My wife got me a board for my birthday a few months later. My first paddle on that board was a 4 mile “race” in Broad Bay, courtesy of the gassets. Came in dfl, (that’s dead freakin’ last), but got bit by the bug that day, big time. Been addicted ever since.

WHere is your fAVorite PAddling sPot?

tuff one. With so much water around here there’s a lot of great places to paddle. But i have to say that a sunrise suP surf session around 49th street is one of my favorites. there’s something about being in the water as the sun comes up and trading waves with the local dolphins. its an incredible way to start the day.

WHAt is your fAVorite PArt ABout suP?

Another tuff one. i guess its the diversity of the sport. you can surf, tour, long distance, camp, race, fish, just about anything to keep you in the water. With so many different ways to enjoy the sport, you can do sometihng different everyday and not get bored. i also really dig the people. there’s a really laid back vibe around the sport right now. Kind of like the old Mtn. Biking vibe. i re-ally hope that as the sport continues to grow, we never lose that cool spirit. i guess it’s up to us to keep it mel-low, huh?

WHAts on your iPod WHen you Are out PAddling?

Man, there’s so much stuff on there. i’m a recovering spreadhead, so of course there’s some Widespread Panic. A little guster, dispatch, Allman Brothers, Wilco, drivin n Cryin’. the list goes on. oh and some Metallica.

WHen you Arent PAddling, you CAn Be found....

trying my best to be a good husband to my Beautiful Wife, lori, giv-ing my best effort to be a good dad to my two nuggets, Hadley and Cole, or trail running in seashore state Park with my lab Mystic. i’m a blessed man.

Ah…the Off-seAsOn. time to sit back, take stock of the past race season, and crush potato chips in my lay-z-boy, watching my favorite AMC re-runs as my paddle-board sits covered in the corner of my porch and my running shoes collect dust in the far depths of my closet. not exactly. if you’re like me, the “offseason” lasts for about a week until another training block starts, and next season’s races fill the squares on your wall calen-dar. An extra set at the gym, an extra mile on the board, an extra repeat on the track- a little extra something for the guy who beat you last season. split times, miles per hour, pace per mile, gPs read-outs, interval repeats, etc- i could recite these numbers in my sleep. i dream about them, facing them daily in an effort to get better, faster, stronger. these metrics are my measuring sticks, and the numbers never lie.

last week i set out on a trail through the park just before dark. Checking the training schedule as always, i knew exactly how far and how fast i was to go. A quarter mile from the house, realizing i had forgotten my garmin, i panicked. How would i know my splits, my pace, my distance, for god’s sake, how would i even put one foot in front of the other and actually run without it? immediately turning around, i sprinted back to retrieve the device, as if i had left the stove on and a fire was sure to engulf my house in flames any moment. Pausing for a moment to see the sun slipping lower in the sky, i decided to face the fear of a no-tech workout, figuring that this run may be shot, but at least i’d break a sweat before dark.

A few miles into the run, after forgiving myself for my absentmindedness, i started to feel “different.” While i had no idea of my pace or distance, my cadence or power output, i actually began to…enjoy myself. A few more miles and running became nearly effortless. i wasn’t going very fast, nor looking at my left wrist to check splits every mile, and the usual grimace, a bi-product of pain, wasn’t present on my face. instead, i caught myself…smiling. As i finished my run in the dark, i had re-discovered the joy of running without reason. for the first time that i could remember, i ran for enjoyment – not to hit a specific interval repeat, tempo pace or distance, but simply to put one foot in front of the other for the sheer pleasure that ensues.

this offseason, if you’re like me, you’ll be working hard to hit the measurable goals that you’ve set for yourself, clicking the buttons on your garmin as you go. However, challenge yourself occasionally to forget about the gadgets and measuring sticks and just be present. Chances are, it will recharge your battery better than potato chips and made-for-tV-movies, and you will re-discover the passion for your sport that lead you here in the first place.

tAKing BooBs to tHe next leVelBy: ginny CoHen

so some of my BooBs gals have been with me since the very inception a couple of summers ago and, this summer, we were fortunate enough to welcome a lot of new ladies each week. i can say that my favorite thing about this past summer’s sessions were watching each and every one of you get stronger, push your limits of comfort and really just learn to do a lot of cool things on your boards—all while having fun. this summer’s most memorable moment for me was watching everyone doing the suP circuit training on a really windy day, throwing down some burpees and going out and doing it all over...again, and again, and again. the first lap, i stood on the beach watching and thinking, “Hmmm, i’m not so sure all these la-dies are going to be able to make it against that wind. Maybe we should have scaled the workout a bit. this could take awhile.” But you know what? As you can see from this picture, all the ladies were practicing what we had preached. they were digging deep, and were amazingly fast!

this summer we’re introducing a new membership-based format for BooBs, as well as offering a “gentlemen’s Club” on Monday nights for the dudes. With the new membership format there will be a fee for membership. this fee will allow us to be able to focus on taking your board prowess to the next level whether you are a beginner or more advanced and to line up even better guest speakers, fellow suP athletes and more in-depth instruc-tion and knowledge. And of course, the emphasis will continue to be on fun and camaraderie but also on the whole suP package.

Also, please note that in an effort to keep all of our clubs cohesive, we’re migrating the BabesPaddleClub.com website to AtlanticPaddlesource.com. All the goodness of BooBs intertwined with loads of knowledge from the suP Voice up and down the Atlantic Coast. Until BOOBs starts again in June, stay tuned for group paddles & free demo days coming soon!

do your research Before you Buy and also take advantage of local demos, which are almost always free.

Buy your board from someone that paddles.shameless plug: scott & Jamie Mitchell right before they both did seA Paddle nyC.

if you pay peanuts, you get monkeys, i.e. you get what you pay for.

Be Honest About your skill level. While you want to think about what you will mostly be doing with your suP (suP surfing, racing, recreational paddling, suP exercise, etc.) be honest about what you can do right now. especially if you’ve never gotten on a board before. if you purchase a board that’s too challenging, you will just get frus-trated. Also, if you want to eventually get into racing, make sure you know the expectations of most races - are you always going to participate in the recreational race divisions or do you want to move up to elite down the road? if so, it’s imperative that you find a board that fits you...and the race circuit.

We love answering any questions you may have about buying your board. Hit us up at [email protected]. for our full video tips on buying your first board, make sure to visit www.youtube.com/user/AtlanticPaddlesource.

ohana developed the 14’ tr (touring/race) to be an all around board for any level of paddler. the cutting nose entry and stable rail and bottom con-tours make this shape perform extremely well in rough and windy conditions into the wind, down wind and mixed swells.

shape includes a domed deck to repel water over the top surface and a flat console for foot place-ment. Console runs out the tail to remove any water which may wash onto the deck area.

there’s a little extra volume in the ohana’s, making them better race boards for the bigger fellas.

VirginiA BeACH, VirginiAthis one was easy. While there are endless destinations along the Atlantic Coast to enjoy stand up Paddleboarding, and we are excited to bring them to you in future issues...how could we not kick this off with a profile of our own home base and clearly one of our favorite places to paddle on the entire eastern seaboard- Virginia Beach, Virginia?

With an energized, & rapidly growing suP community, Virginia Beach and its many waterways provide for a lifetime of paddling adventure. Paddle surf 7 miles of beach break on the ocean-front, explore the ever-changing conditions of the Chesapeake Bay & its calm water tributaries, or compete in one of the many local races held here in the warmer months. As the largest city in Virginia, “the Beach” has enough paddle destinations and citywide launch sites to mix it up all year long.

if you get the itch to venture a little further from home, the outer Banks of north Carolina are less than a 2 hr drive, and delMarVa’s eastern shore is just a quick bridge away.
