Happy Spring everyone! It has been a long time coming and we are hopeful the snow is behind us!

As we develop the services and activities we provide to seniors in our community, we continue to be excited about the future plans for our Center. As many of you know, we received a grant from King County to reach out to more seniors and we have done that. So, throughout the year, we will continue to broaden the vari-ety of individuals served, such as Veterans and the LGBQT community. We are already seeing the benefits among those who might otherwise be isolated and alone.

One of the things I enjoy most is learning that people come to us for many different reasons – one person’s SESSC is different from the next person’s - and that is right on target with the goal for the Center, since we all have different needs.

I continue to boast about having the best staff in the world! They work hard to be sure that we offer services and activities that are fun, useful and that build community for our seniors. I am exceptionally proud of the staff, as if you couldn’t already tell. They love their jobs and they love our seniors. During the “snow-pocalypse,” the Center was closed to participants and members. However, the staff still ventured in to be sure we were on track for everything needed to keep it functioning at its best. They bring their heart and soul to the job every day! And, I would be remiss in not acknowledging our volunteers, who also work hard, with love, but for free! We could not do what we do without the support and commitment from our corps of Volunteers!

I hope you take the time to check out the contents of this newsletter. Share it with your family, friends, and with someone who might benefit from the activities and programs that we offer. There are exciting changes on the horizon and we want you to be included. Please stay involved and share your concerns and comments with me. I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Thank you for your support in 2018 and together we will make 2019 the best year ever!

A Message from the Board President

Lynda Greene, SESSC Executive Director

Barbara Chamberlain, SESSC Board President

Happy Independence Day!

March 1, 2019 marks the one-year celebration of SouthEast Seattle Senior Center being an

independent organization.

It has been a very busy year and we have accomplished a great deal. We have a new logo, a new

Mission Statement and the bylaws have been amended. Job descriptions and the employee handbook

have been rewritten and the payroll is now supervised in-house.

Grant applications have been written by our staff and volunteers. A $90,000 grant from King

County allowed expansion of programs and activities as well as providing for installation of a new roll-up

window in the kitchen, a new garage gate and motor, an ADA entry from the garage a new computer serv-

er, and replacement of the flooring in the social hall - scheduled to be completed in March. We also received a City grant of $173,000 per

year for the next four years.

In spite of the snow in February, Rainbow Bingo provided an entertaining and fun evening as well as raising funds for the Center.

The Wine and Food Gala and Auction, although postponed because of snow, was a great success and raised additional funds. The grants

and fundraisers are a big part of our income, but with a budget nearing a half-million dollars, there is always a need for additional dona-

tions.

Thank you to all our members and participants, to our staff and volunteers, and to our sponsors and contributors. You are what

makes SESSC the best senior center ever!

Barbara Chamberlain, SESSC Board President

To provide the much needed programming for our seniors and to continue to meet our financial obligations, the

Center has launched a Monthly Pledge Program. Many members are unaware that the cost to manage the Cen-

ter is significant and ranges from unexpected building maintenance and repair costs, to meeting monthly expens-

es like utility bills. Because these expenses cannot be met solely on In-kind donations, we need your continued

financial support. If we know what our monthly contributions will be, then it will be easier to budget and

continue to provide the wide assortment of programs and activities members enjoy. Hopefully you can see why

your contribution and making a consistent pledge is so valuable. There are NOW convenient, SAFE and zero cost

ways to contribute without leaving your home:

Keeps on Giving

training list. You can also contact Alexander Arceo at 206-722-0317 for more information.

statement definitely rings true. If you have been coming to the Center to

participate in our activities like exercise or lunch, you might want to seriously

consider becoming a member of the Center.

Here is what Lifetime Member, Sidney Carter, has to say about being a mem-

ber. “Being a member gives me the sense that this is MY center and I help

make it strong by putting my dollars toward programs I love and want to share

with others. I know my contributions are really appreciated. Although activities are already

affordable, membership offers discounted prices on most classes, activities and trips. Whether

you choose Lifetime Membership or Annual Membership, you will get satisfaction that you have

done the right thing!”

We hope that you consider becoming a member of the Center. You will not regret your deci-

sion to join the SESSC.

SESSC volunteers invest their time, hard work, and loving care and are committed to forming a

strong community and welcoming culture at our Center. They keep us strong. Here we highlight

just a few volunteers who keep our Center going:

THANKS VOLUNTEERS - WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!

Volunteer Corner

Elizabeth Morris - Elizabeth has graced our Center with her

art, and now she is sharing her art teacher skills, teaching a

class last quarter and we hope another time soon.

Donna Shaman - Donna met us through Rainbow Bingo and

had so much fun she decided to stick around. Now she helps

in the kitchen getting lunch ready.

Melissa Hancock - Melissa is a new mother but carves out time from her young children to lend a hand in our computer

room, helping untangle our confusion about how to make our gadgets work!

By the time you read this newsletter, there may be another new volunteer in the house. Be sure to extend a warm

welcome and thank you, including those not listed above.

Let’s keep it going strong!

We need your HELP, ESPECIALLY with the Community Dining Lunch Program

Community Dining Lunch Program: Because participation

in our lunch program has grown dramatically, Sharon Smith,

our Master Chef, needs help in the kitchen with a variety of

tasks, like food preparation and dish washing. One of the

perks of being a volunteer in the Community Dining Lunch

program is that you don’t have to pay for lunch!

Special Events: One of the ways the SESSC is able to provide

the activities you enjoy is by raising money through our various

special events such as the Lifetime Members appreciation

event, Annual Wine and Food Gala and Rainbow Bingo. Be a

part of the group that truly makes it happen at the SouthEast

Seattle Senior Center.

Wednesday Bingo: We need volunteers for Bingo! Help ver-

ify a winning bingo, sell specials, or call numbers.

Cheap Chickadee Thrift Shop: Be a part of the team that plays

a major role in providing revenue for the Center. Remember,

the store is open Monday - Thursday 10:00am-2:00pm.

Birthday Lunch: We need two volunteers to devote two

hours of their time setting up for the birthday lunch on the

third Wednesday from 3:00pm - 4:00pm and cleaning up after

birthday lunch on the third Thursday.

Reception - We have openings for the Monday PM reception-

ist shift and a substitute receptionist. As a receptionist, you

are the face of the Center. If you have a friendly demeanor

and a willingness to serve, then this is a role for you.

There are other volunteer opportunities available. Stop by Kate Harkin’s office or call her at

206-722-0317 to find the volunteer opportunity that is right for you.

New idea to try: volunteer with a friend to make it even more fun!
