CHAIRMAN’S REPORTAswemoveintospring,itisgoodtoseeallthedaffodilsandtulipscomingintofullbloom,aftersomeofthegloomduringthewinterymonthswearenowleaving.FollowingSheila’sretirement as Booking Secretary, we are now pleased to say that the bookings have been takenonbySueSlate,whosenumberyouwillfindinthismagazine.OurthanksgotoSheilafor all she has done, with the hope that she will always be in the background where possible for weddings in Cadbury Hall.Usually, when writing this report, I am asking for support and donations towards the refurbishment of the kitchen. This report, I am pleased to say, that although not quite there,wearenowinapositiontohaveplansdrawnupandfinalisedreadyfortheoff.LikeTheSunnysideDayCentre,wealllookforwardtoits’completion,withthehopethatnottoomuch distress is caused to the normal users of the kitchen.Also,youwillnotice,thatwiththankstotheBowlsClub,ParishCouncil,andothernumerousgroupsandmembers,thereisnowaDefibrillatoronthefrontwalloftheCadburyHall.ThisishopefullytobethefirstofseveralDefibrillatorstobeinstalledaroundthevillage.Wewillbe arranging for someone to visit Cadbury Hall to discuss and show how it is to be used, and would ask, that any group wishing to learn the technicalities and usage, notify me, and we will arrange a suitable time for a demonstration.Bynow,ourPresident,RobinWheeler,willhavecalledonmanyaffiliatedgroupmeetings,forviewsonhow theFCAworks,and to receiveadviceonhowyourgroup foresees thefuture. WenowhaveadefibrillatorattheCadburyHall(seeabove).It was purchased by the Parish Council and the Bowls Club, and the container (costing muchmorethanthedefibrillator!)wasfundedbydonationsfromthePinchingTrust,Jane Hey, the Beer, Blokes & Books group, the Bridge group, the Brownies, the Ping Pong Café group, the Silver Band, the Sunnyside Lunch group and the Village Society. We are most grateful to them all.ItwasaccreditedbytheSouthWestAmbulanceServiceinthemiddleofMarchandshould be fully integrated into the 999 Medical Emergency Service by the beginning ofApril.It can often save the life of someone having a heart attack if they can get to one quickly.Ifyouneedtouseit,dial999,andtellthemthepostcode(GL27HG)ortheDefibrillatornumber. If you are using a mobile phone and it has no signal, the other mobile operators will connect the call.No training needed (but we’ll get somesoon) – just do the following:1. Call 999 to get an ambulance. The

operator will give you the key code to open it.

2. Unlock the cabinet and take the defibrillatoroutofitspacket.

3. Switch it on (green button).4. Follow the recorded instructions

The band has had a quiet start to the year, with a break from engagements. However, we have been busy practising musical selections from Grease, James Bond andPiratesoftheCaribbean,inpreparationforour“NightattheMovies”concert.This will be at 7.30pm on Saturday 20th May in the Cadbury Hall. THE 6th Annual LONGNEY BEER FESTIVALThisyear’sbeerfestivalwilltakeplaceonSaturdaythe20thMay.BasedatYewTreeFarm in Longney, the main event is inside the barn, where there will be patio heaters tokeeppeoplewarmuntilthedancingkicksoff!Thereisalsoalargeareaofhardstanding and paddock from where you can enjoy the sunset over the banks of the River Severn and views over rolling countryside to the Malvern Hills. It promises to be a great event. Live music courtesy of Jon Clare and the Dough boys and another acoustic act yet to be announced. There will be food from locally reared pigs and rolls fromthefamousHobbsHousebakery.Andofcourseplentyofbeer.Weareluckytohave a master brewer in charge of beer selection and every year there is a great choice in favouriteandnewcraftales.Lastyear’sselloutbeerwasBeavertown’sGammaRay.AnotherpopularchoicewasFubarfromtheTinyRebelBrewingCompany.BeingaGloucestershireeventinsightofMayHillwecouldn’tbewithoutsomechoiceciderstoo.TherewillbeplentyoftheperennialfavouriteStowford’spressandsomequirkynew tastes for you to try.ThiseventisheldinaidofLongneyPrimaryAcademy.Asmallvillageschoolofjustover 100 pupils serving the villages of Epney, Longney and Elmore. Last year this eventraised£2000fortheschool.Themoneywasputtouseincreatinganewlibraryfor the children. The space at the top of the old school building was redecorated and new furniture acquired as well as new books. Parents came in to help put reference numbers on all books so that the children can learn to use the Dewy decimal system which should stand them in good stead for their future learning lives. This addition to the school environment would not have been possible without the funds raised by theFriendsofLongneyschoolandisarealassettothelocalchildren.Aspartofthecelebration of the new facility the children this year are taking part in the Readathon scheme which challenges pupils to do sponsored reading with money raised going towards storytellers for children in hospitals. The bacon that we brought for last year’sfestivalwasfromWickCourtwhichusesprofitstogivedeprivedcitychildrenachance to come and experience country life. This cycle of community giving is a very important part of the ethos of Longney School.

But what does the Parish Council DO?Many of you did our online survey just after Christmas and your answers were really interesting. What you have said will help us decide our focus for the future but for now I will report on a few of the issues that you have raised.Many people were unhappy with their mobile phone service and broadband. Dealing withthisisa‘bitaboveourpaygrade’sowepassedtheissueontoourMPwhohastakenituponourbehalf.Afterhisinvolvement,wearepleasedtoreportthatVodaphone has applied for a new 4G phone mast to replace the one at the telephone exchange. It has to gain planning approval but, if it does, we are hopeful that this will improve our signal. Broadband is being discussed at county level and the aim is to improve the service across the county. There has been a lot of pressure from the parishes in our area about this.On‘Greycroft’,wehavebeenurgingthedistrictcouncil to takeaction fora longtime. Finally, they have informed us that they are issuing urgent works notices and the work will be carried out by them if it is not done by the owner.WehavedecidedtobuythetwotelephoneboxesinBridgeRdandTheStreet(cost£1each)andtousethemtoinstalldefibrillators.NegotiationsareongoingwithBritishTelecomandSWAmbulanceService.Wealsogaveagranttowardsthedefibrillatorwhich has been put up outside of Cadbury Hall.TheA38/Perrywayjunctionisanongoingconcern.Wehavebeenincontactwithcounty highways about this issue for a very long time. In the survey, you said that youwouldliketoseetrafficlightsasabestsolution.Wearegraduallyedgingabitcloser to getting something done but keep up the pressure on the county council and thatwillhelpusgetthere–wehaveseenthecommentson‘SpottedinFrampton’.The results of the survey were reported to the council on March 15th. We will be reportingthemtotheparishionersatourAGMonMay24th.Pleasecomealongtohear the results and involve yourself in the discussions about it. We would especially like to see some of the teenagers and young adults of the village and their parents atthemeeting.Yourcommentstoushaveconvincedusthatweneedtohavemorefocus on your needs and we need you to help us plan for the future.Finally, we are soon to say goodbye to our Chairman, Ross Heaton, who is moving to Wiltshire. Ross has quietly contributed a huge amount to the village in his time as a parish councillor and then Chairman. He chaired the Shop Group which helped usgetanewshopandPostOfficetoreplacetheoldoneand,inhistimeasChair,he has encouraged the council to embrace the digital age, take initiatives such as theintroductionofdefibrillatorsandthevillagesurveywhichwillhopefullyleadtonew plans for the village going forward. It owes a lot to his leadership that we had four really excellent candidates for co-option to replace Ross and the late Cllr. John Howe. We hope that they will all stay involved with us on the Strategic Working party butwehadthereallydifficultjobofpickingtwoofthemasparishcouncillorsandwearepleasedtowritethatKateWilliamsandNeilTurnerhavebeenappointed.

Sheep Worrying by DogsWith the ewes in the Estate’s flock due to lamb early in April a timely reminderaboutSheepandDogsmightbeuseful.Youdonothavetoputyourdogonaleadon public paths, as long as it is under close control, but even the most reliable dog can act out of character on occasions and all dogs should be kept on a lead when walking on pastureland or through livestock, particularly sheep. By law, farmers are entitled to destroy a dog that injures or worries their animals.Itwouldalsobeappreciatedifyoucouldrememberthatthereisno“righttoroam”in the Park and the only public footpath runs in a direct line between the Park gates offPerrywayandthegateatFitcherbury.Thisistheonlypermittedroutethatyoushould be walking on.

How you become a Christian and then how you maintain your faith is something we think a lot about in the churches in The Stroudwater Team. Meeting other Christians regularly helps to feel part of a community and to feel the presence of the Holy Spirit amongst us.Weareawarethatsomepeoplepreferserviceswhichare lessformal,andofferachance to sit at a table with friends, eat breakfast (yummy bacon butties) maybe try a craft activity and discuss the theme of the day. We very much look forward to welcoming Christine Birkett back to Frampton to lead our Easter service. The service will be a family communion at 11am on Sunday April 16th.

Many of you will remember Christine with her son, Matthew, when they lived near the cafe, now Ley Bistro, and edited the churchmagazine. After she had been ordainedshe moved away, to start her ministry as a curate at Stone and Berkeley and then to her own parish. Her work is changing again and will shortly be in Gloucester, but while undertaking further training she is able to help us to celebrate Easter Day.

Everyone is welcome and we hope that you and all your family will be able to join us.

We welcome visitors on any weekend as we open the church from 10am to 4pm each Saturday and Sunday, but are especially hopeful for people to join us at our monthly events.

Understandably, he is in bed by 9.30pm latest!On 24th February Jean and David Speed entertained a packed village hall with a fascinating potted history of Rosamund Green. They set the scene with a few anecdotes and photos of the more unusual comings and goings spotted from their kitchen window – the school bus and the dustbin lorry stuck in Roes Pool (on differentoccasions!)andthegliderwhosepilotmistookthegreenforNympsfield.Then, back to the 12th century and the possible encounter between Prince Henry (onhiswayback fromhunting in the Forest ofDean) and JaneClifford (wearingsomething diaphanous?) on the banks of the river Frome. He, so the tale goes, was captured by her beauty. Jean and David then took us from probable myth to probable fact and other possible encounters between Henry and Jane involving education in GloucesterandagrandbanquetatFlaxleyAbbey.InduecoursehebecameHenryII and she became his mistress. He, we were told, named her Rosa Mundi and thus wehaveRosamund.Thefirstknownrecordeduseofthename‘RosamundGreen’was not until 1651. It was not until the 18th century that the marshy green was drained and the straight road that we know today was made through the middle. News from LakefieldAsmostmembersofthecommunitywillbeaware,wehaverecentlycompletedalarge extension project, which has made the reception, year 1, and year 2 classrooms larger. We have worked with Gloucestershire County Council, local residents, parents and our builders in order to make the classrooms more suitable for the number of childrenwehaveadmittedrecently.Aspartofthebuildprojectwehavereorganisedthe outside area and will be developing the garden space over the next few terms as wellasre-seedingpartsoftheschoolplayingfieldinordertoensurethisisreadyfor the summer months.The children have recently moved into their new, larger classrooms, with the extra space and equipment already paying dividends. I would like to thank residents and parents for their patience during the build.DuringFebruary,weheldourannualexhibition,thisyearthemed‘AroundtheWorldin8classes’whichsaweverychildandphasehavingtheopportunitytotakepart.The nursery looked at France, reception looked at India, year 1 looked at Italy, year 2lookedatBrazil,year3lookedatAustralia,year4lookedattheUSA,year5lookedat Kenya and year 6 looked at Japan.The children created a 3D model to accompany each of the countries they looked at fromtheEiffelTower,theTajMahal,theLeaningTowerofPisa,BrazilianRainforest,Sydney Opera House, Charlie Chaplin (including the creation of black and whitefilms),Lion(paintedintheKenyanflag)andtheTeaceremonyandBonsaitrees.Wehad over 200 visitors over the two sessions and some fantastic feedback.Iwouldliketothankeveryoneinvolvedinexhibitionfromthechildrentothestaffand those parents and members of the community who gave up their time to help thechildrenmakepizza,buildthe3Dstructuresandsupporttheschool.Members of the community are very welcome to pop in and have a look at the school inactionorifyoufeelyouhaveskillsthatthechildrenwouldbenefitfrompleasecontact us – we are a friendly team.

The Editor Frampton on Severn Community Newsletter [email protected] Our Ref.: IIVMMXVII Dear Sir, We would be grateful if you would bring the following to the attention of residents in the Frampton on Severn area through the pages of your Community Newsletter. You may have recently seen on National Television a feature regarding Mr. Luke Jerram (a former Stroud resident) and a Community Arts Project with which he has been involved in Scunthorpe. To celebrate the heritage of Scunthorpe, six solid gold items (significant to ‘local history’) were buried around the town. ’Clues’ to the locations of these items were then exhibited by way of an Art exhibition in the local museum. Anyone solving a clue and subsequently finding one of the items could keep it. We have decided, following generous sponsorship from local companies, to organise a similar event to celebrate the industrial heritage of the Stroud area (albeit with items of somewhat less value cast in sterling silver). Frampton on Severn, because of its longstanding connection to Cadbury’s (now part of Kraft Foods) has been selected as one of the locations we are using. A small sterling silver replica of a square of the famous chocolate ( approximately 3cm x 1.5cm x 1cm) with the traditional and well known ‘Cadbury signature’ logo on its top surface has been hidden somewhere around your famous Rosamunde’s Green. The location of this ‘treasure’ can be found by solving the ‘clue’ below. We will subsequently be printing this clue (together with five more for other locations) in the ‘Stroud News & Journal’ and the ‘Dursley Gazette’ this month so that all residents of the Stroud area have an opportunity to take part in our ‘Treasure Hunt’. CONGREGATIONAL CHURCHWe are at present halfway through our Charity Lunches which we hold on the 6 Friday’sofLentTheyhavebeenreallywellattendedsofarsothankyousomuchtoeveryone who has come along. We had a group of 15 from WI last week and we are very grateful for their support. This yearwe are supporting three charities, Youthat Heart, a charity set up to help young people with congenital heart disease and tohelpfinanceacardiacyouthworker,basedinthecommunityinthesouthwest.The second charity is Glory Road Ministries to help Christian outreach to drivers and families in the transport industry, including Truckers of many nationalities and thirdly NationalStarCentreatUllenwoodwhorelyoncharitydonationsfortheirworkwithhelping the aspirations of people with disabilities. We are therefore hoping to raise a generous amount to support these good causes. We started holding these charity lunches over 20 years ago and have raised thousands of pounds for a great number of local charities so we thank you for helping us to continue with this annual appeal.We are lucky to have a varying number of children each week to Sunday School, we are a happy band and those who come along really seem to enjoy all that we do, singing,worshipping,craftwork.Allchildrenarewelcomesocomealongandjoinusat10.30onSundaymornings.WehavedifferentpeoplefromtheMinistryTeamtaking morning services, as well as our Minister, and this seems to be working well. OnGoodFridayourMinisterwillbetakingthemorningcommunionserviceat9.30followedbycoffeeandhotcrossbuns.WewillbejoinedbytheSevernsidegroupofChurches at 2.00 for refreshments in the schoolroom followed by a short service in the chapel and the procession for the 3.00 service around the cross on the green. FRAMPTON WIMembers of the WI have begun the new year with talks, various courses attended ranging from cake decorating to embroidery, lunch club visits to local hostelries, theatrevisits,preparationforthenewquizseason,newbookstoreadforourbookgroup, walks and countless other things.

In February, we heard all about the Glamorgan Heritage Coast from Rose Hewlett and in March we were listening the adventures of Mike Cooper who was a games–maker forLondon2012andalsoattheAtlantaOlympicGames.ThevarietycontinuesinAprilwhenwehavebeenaskedtobringalongourteddybearsandinMayweshallbe looking at some of the more unusual buildings in Gloucester!

Visitors are alwayswelcome to any of ourmeetings,which are held on the firstThursday of each month, at 7.30 in the Village Hall.

Homo FramptoniusIt has been anounced that ancient human remains have been unearthed during recent cable laying work in Frampton on Severn. The exact site of this exciting acchaeological discovery wil remain secret until funding can be put in place to preserve and protect these priceless artifacts.

Local archaeologist, ‘Digger’ McCooper, an expert in Roman acchaeology, is amazed at this stunning, local find. Having been invited to examine the site, he has enthusiastically described it a one of England’s most important discoveries in over a hundred years.

‘Early indications seem to show that Frampton’s earliest inhabitants were a small, close-knit community. Evidence of drinking vessels and other utensils found on the site point to a great consumption of fermented apple juice, elvers and sausages. Also, fragments of tribal costume unearthed recently lead to the conclusion that the inhabitants wore predominantly cherry and white attire.’

More details will be released as soon as the come to hand (possibly as early as next April) in local press and this newsletter.

The last meeting of the WI in 2016 celebrated Christmas with our usual Christmas dinner which was supplied and enjoyed by all the members. There were cold meats, salads and puddings galore and presents for all members as thanks for all of their hard work in supporting various projects during the year. The Village Hall was decorated in a festive style with our Christmas Tree taking centre stage. It had been decorated by members with stars which they had made from stained glass, paper, salt dough, wool and many other things. It had been part of the successful Christmas Tree Festival in church which had been organised by Marion Cramp, our President and other members of the Institute and village.

After ending the year on a festive note, we began the New Year with aspeaker who told us all about the history of witches and witchcraft and tales of some of the local witches in Gloucestershire. The rest of the programme for 2017 is attached, so please some along and join us in future meetings this year.

HIDDEN GARDENS AND SCARECROW EVENTThis year, the Frampton Hidden Gardens event, now getting on for its 20th year of running, is linking up with the Frampton Scarecrow competition.The latter event is organised by the Village Society and the former event is organised byStonehouseRotary,suchthatasignificantproportionoftheproceeds,benefitsthepeople and organisations in our village.Forexample,£400fromlastyear’sevent,hasbeendonatedtowardstheCadburyHallKitchen refurbishment fund. News from Wick CourtLambingiswellunderway–ourfirstflockfollowedtheplanandlambedfromthestartofterminJanuaryuntilhalfterm.Nowthechildrenarebackit’stheturnofthe native breeds – Cotswold, Coloured Ryeland and Jacob ewes are now producing theirveryprettyoffspring.Ofcoursethechildrenlovethistimeofyear,especiallywhen there are some that need a top-up from a bottle.Overthewinterthechildrenhavebeenbusysurveyingandnumberingourorchards,eventually we hope to have as many trees as possible clearly labelled with their names, uses and harvesting period so the children can enjoy learning more about these special orchards and full use of the produce will be ensured into the future. Wearegrateful toTheSummerfieldTrustwhohave fundedthisprojectand theGloucestershire Orchard Trust who are helping with identification, pruning andplanting.Anotherwinteractivityhasbeenthecleaningandre-paintingofanewbeehiveforone of our colonies – the children have employed their artistic skills and the bees will never mistake which is their home! We are grateful to Severn Vale Rotary Club who have bravely strimmed and cleared around our apiary making access much easier.Our roundhouse, despite not having anywalls yet, has been in use everyweekfor“WoodlandActivities”andtheever-popularstorytellingfromBillChurchwhichends the outdoor week for the children. The team who built Roundhouse number 1 are coming back over Easter to create Roundhouse number 2 – this one will house the toilet, handwashing and washing up facilities which will enable us to have the children outside for longer and the plan is that they will be able to cook and eat their lunch outdoors. This also means that other local groups can come and use the Woodland area independently even when we have a school in residence in the house. This is thanks to Peter Spargo and all of you who so generously sponsored his epic ride.Anothernewasset isourbirdhide – fundedbyBillChurchandBrianDimmockwho undertook a cycling and storytelling tour to raise the money and built by our volunteer team. This gives us a sheltered spot for birdwatching in any weather and allows fantastic views across our new ponds and the river.Meanwhile the cows are calving, the pigs are farrowing, the poultry are surviving their under-cover lifestyle and in the garden there is plenty of new growth and seeds being sown. The children have also helped set up our new enterprise – growing mushrooms from spawn inoculated into recently-felled logs and sealed with our own beeswax. Look out for our garden produce which will be stocked in The Green Shopverysoon.Ourmeatisalwaysavailable–eitherphoneusorpopdownonaFriday morning and purchase our sausages, bacon, lamb burgers, mince, diced, plus pork, lamb and Gloucester beef joints.

Open Farm SundayWe are opening the farm on Sunday 11th JuneaspartoftheOpenFarmSundayscheme. The children will be farming, hosting, giving tours and selling our produce andthekitchenwillbeservingthefamousWickCourtbreakfastbapsfilledwithourownsausages,baconandeggsandofcoursecakes.Allarewelcomebetween10am and 1pm, admission free – do come down and meet the children and animals.The Handlebards…are cycling back to perform for us again in the beautiful Wick Court orchard. March UpdateHere we are at the beginning of March and suddenly realise that the pantomime was performedatCadburyHalltwomonthsago.Itwasawell-writtenandfinelydirectedproduction that was well received by our audiences and of course, finances. It isamazingthesedayshowmuchitcostsjusttoputonaproductionwithasmallgrouplike ourselves. The pantomime gives us the opportunity to highlight the talents of our much younger budding actors and actresses. It was great that there was good audienceparticipationforeveryperformance, “Ohno, itwasn’t!Ohyes itwasetc,etc”-WewerealsovisitedandreviewedbyarepresentativeofNODA(NationalOperaandDramaAssociation).Theoverall impressionwasverypositivewithsomegoodconstructive criticism.Watch out for us now during the summer months when we will attempt to support and display ourselves in events in the area.Come the autumn we will start to celebrate our 80th season. Some achievement for a small village group! Twice a year we have a panel meeting made up of local residents who meet with us the run through what they would the local policing team to concentrate on over the spring and summer period.Ourspringmeetingwasheldonthe2ndMarchandwehavebeengivenonepriorityfortheFramptonareabeingAnti-socialbehaviourincorporatingnuisancebehaviour& speeding.We are pleased to report that covering the period 14th February to 14th March 2017 Frampton has had an extremely low crime rate with only the one crime being a stolen land rover which was taken without keys from a property on the 7th March.This is the second incident involving the theft of a land rover as last autumn a similar vehicle was stolen from The Green area.Alsoonthepointofvehiclethefts,ourcolleaguesatAvon&SomersetpolicebasedinThornburyhavenotifiedusofarecentrunofvehicletheftsintheirareaincludinganumberofvanswhichhavebeenbrokenintoandpowertoolsremoved.Aswehavealso had a couple of these thefts not far from Frampton, we believe that it could be thesameoffenders.If you store such items in a van, it might be worth removing these overnight.Finally as part of our priority which includes speeding, if you are keen to observe one of our planned speed checks in Frampton over the coming weeks – do get in touch & you can see what we do and actual speeds taking place.Michael.trebble@gloucestershire.pnn.police.ukMelanie.campbell@gloucestershire.pnn.police.ukPCSOMIKETREBBLE&PCMELCAMPBELL.

SEVERNSIDE MOTHERS’ UNIONThe February meeting of the Severnside Mothers’ Union was the Annual GeneralMeeting.TheTreasurergavetheFinancialreportandaReviewoftheYearwasgivenby Gwen Hewlett.

We had a small meeting in March as several members were not well, but Rev. Vernon Lidstone led Communion and then Mike Godwin from Stroud District Council spoke to us about Careline and all the various facilities that are available from the Council. Most particularly the pendants you can wear, either around your neck or on the wrist, which are attached to your phone so that if you have a fall or are ill you can call a Centre who will then get in touch with nominated people to come and rescue you.

Frampton WI recipies from 1935Among my collection of cookbooks I have a battered old copy of ‘Gleanings from Gloucestershire Housewives’, I picked it up in a second-hand book shop years ago. I thought I’d share a couple of the recipies contributed from the Frampton on Severn Women’s Institute.It would be wonderful if some of you reading this could send in recipies to me. Local recipies; favourite recipies; family recipies passed down through the generations; recipies discovered on holiday......I’ll print a few contributions each issue to share with everyone. I hope some of you can find the time to do this as I’d really enjoy it and I’m sure others would too.

My Grandmother’s CheesecakeTake one quart of milk, warmed to about 80 to 84degrees. Put in enough rennet to curdle it in one hour. Break it up with a fork, let it settle and drainoffthewhey,butnottoodry.Addtothecurd4wellbeateneggs,thegratedrindandjuiceofalemon,1/4lb.sugar,1/4lb.currants,1/2nutmeg grated, and a saltspoon full of salt. Mix thoroughly. Line a deep soup plate with your favourite pastry, and pour in the mixture, This is a Festival dish; so if you have some cream, put some in as well. Dot small lumps of butter over the top, and bake till the pastry is nicely cooked. Eat cold.
