By mutual agreement, The Board of Directors of River to Coast Children’s Services and its
Executive Director, Ms. Jynx Lopez, have agreed to separate its child care services from its pre-school services. As a result, Ms. Lopez has resigned in order to resume being the Director of her pre-schools. The Board wants to thank Ms. Lopez for all of her hard work. The Board will be working with her to facilitate the transition of the pre-schools back to her as quickly as possible.
Staff members Ms. Soledad Cardona and Ms. Agnese Daniel have been named as Interim Co-Directors.
The Board will continue to work hard to achieve its goal of minimal disruption to our clients. River to Coast Children’s Services looks forward to continuing its working relationship with the Community it has served throughout the past 37 years.

PROVIDER APPRECIATION DAY is a special day to recognize child care providers,
teachers and other educators of young children everywhere. Started in 1996 by a group of volunteers in New Jersey, Provider Appreciation Day is appropriately celebrated each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day. The founding organizers saw the need to recognize the tireless efforts of providers who care for children of working parents. Momentum and support for this event has
grown each year and recognition presently includes individuals and government o r g a n i z a t i o n s throughout the United States.

MAKING MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS: DEALING WITH TEMPER TANTRUMS
WHAT’S HAPPENINGTwo- and 3-year-olds have many skills, but controlling their tempers is not one of them. Tantrums are common at this age because toddlers are becoming independent and developing their own wants, needs, and ideas. However, they are not yet able to express their wants and feelings with words. Take comfort in the fact that most children outgrow tantrums by age 4.
WHAT YOU MIGHT BE SEEINGMost toddlers:
• Love to say “No!” “Mine!” and “Do it myself!”• Test rules over and over to see how parents will react• Are not yet ready to share• Need lots of fun activities, play times, and opportunities to explore the world• Respond well to a routine for sleeping and eating (a regular schedule)• Like to imitate grownups and to “help” mom and dad
WHAT YOU CAN DOIt is often easier to prevent tantrums than to deal
with them after they get going. Try these tips:• Direct your child’s attention to something else. (“Wow, look at that fire engine!”)• Give your child a choice in small matters. (“Do you want to eat peas or carrots?”)• Stick to a daily routine that balances fun activities with enough rest and healthful food.• Anticipate when your child will be disappointed. (“We are going to buy groceries for dinner. We won’t be buying cookies, but you can help me pick out some fruit for later.”)• Praise your child when he or she shows self-control and expresses feelings with words.If you cannot prevent the tantrum, here are some
tips fordealing with it:• Say what you expect from your child and have confidence that your child will behave.• Remain calm. You are a role model for your child.• Holding your child during a tantrum may help a younger child feel more secure and calm down more quickly.• Take your child to a quiet place where he or she can calm down safely. Speak softly or play soft music.• Some children throw tantrums to seek attention. Try ignoring the tantrum, but pay attention to your child after he or she calms down.• Resist overreacting to tantrums, and try to keep your sense of humor
REMEMBER: When your child is having a floor-thumping tantrum, the most important thing you can do is remain calm and wait it out. Do not let your child’s behavior cause you to lose control, too.

Los niños entre dos y tres años de edad tienen muchas habilidades, pero controlar sus temperamentos no es una de ellas. Child Care and Development Programs Prevent Child Abuse
Goals of community-wide comprehensive prevention of child abuse include:
• Increase parents' knowledge and understanding of how children develop and what they can expect at each stage of development.
• Enhance bonding and communication between parents and their children. • Increase parents' skills in coping with the stresses of caring for children
with special needs. • Increase parents’ knowledge about managing homes and families. • Reduce the burden of child care. • Increase access to social and health-care services for all community
members.
Child care and development programs can provide all of these, and provide opportunities for working parents, for parents who need respite from the stresses of their responsibilities, and for children who have been abused or neglected to obtain safe, nurturing care.
Child care professionals prevent child abuse by providing emotional and educational support to families in crisis and can serve as extended support systems for families by: • Developing positive, non-judgmental relationships with parents • Being alert to signs of stress in parents • Providing opportunities for parents to become involved in their child's care • Communicating regularly with parents concerning children's progress • Providing parent education • Modeling developmentally appropriate practices • Providing information about community resources
Early care and education programs not only prevent child maltreatment, but also improve factors that may lead to less abuse and neglect: improved parenting skills, healthy child development, and economic self-sufficiency. Research studies and longitudinal surveys show that high quality child development programs with parent involvement have lasting benefits for children and their families.
Additionally, child care workers' frequent contacts with children puts them in a good position to recognize victimized children and because of this, child care workers are legally mandated reporters of child abuse/neglect.
