Gimmy Tranquillo Sails away in the PHRF C fleet in the Les Storrs and off to Italy

April/May 2009 THE BEACON 2

Well, we certainly out did ourselves this last week. Sunday, we started off with our annual open-ing day ceremonies. Traditional in all respects. S/C Mike Priest doing the Irish coffees, with help from Kelly Fennessy and Ron Kenney. Champagne upstairs and down with Fleet/Cruise Captain Dana Hutton, Samantha Carlson and Lee Casey pouring downstairs while Peter Gonzalez poured upstairs. The food was tremendous and the upstairs ladies are to be complimented. Trish, Maureen, Pat and Kim (Dan’s friend) and of course Karm. R/C Bruce even got waylaid by some early arrivals that needed their bloody marys right away. S/C Bob Kellock and Dan on the flags and gun always put on a traditional showing, and of course what could be better than a Commo-dore’s speech that was just a little plagiarized. Tracey and new mem-ber Steve Vincent roamed the grounds to make sure everyone was having a good time.

Then comes Saturday, and the Les Storrs, and what a success that was. We really do shine when it comes to race management and PRO Stu Cole-man pulled off 3 successful races. The winds didn’t cooperate fully, nor did the direction, but the 29 boats in 5 classes seemed to enjoy the windward leeward courses enough to fill the Club afterward and take part in our hospitality.

Kudos to Race Chair Mel Widawski for pull-ing together the event. Thanks to Jim Doherty for the use of Camelot, with Mel and Shari Landon on flags, and Mike Quigley on gun, and of course S/C Stu Coleman PRO. Yours truly with Karm were del-

COMMODORE’S REPORTby Tom Estlow

Opening day was quite an experience. Cannons went off , flags went up, Dan got to say bang and we were presented (again) with the 2008 SCCYC Associ-ate Club of the year trophy. The club looked great, all of the volunteer effort really showed. We always get compliments on the world’s best Irish coffee and the brevity of our ceremony and this year was no differ-ent. As per our tradition we didn’t miss anyone in the introductions, nor did we mispronounce a name!

First Friday in February was a fabulous Italian dinner cooked by Membership Chair Larry Hoskinson and his wife Leslie. It sounded so great that I was sad to have missed it. Bruce Fleck served up a Taco feast and showed slides from the PV race for the February membership dinner. Gimmy Tranquillo’s first Friday dinner in March doubled as his and Kat’s going away dinner as they’re off to Italy soon. Kellie Fennessy and Mike Priest served up March’s membership meet-ing dinner to rave reviews. I’m looking forward to Karmen Estlow’s first Friday dinner in April.

First Fridays and Membership dinners are a great way to get together with club members and meet some of the newest members. If any of you want to volunteer a dinner (cook or take out) just let me know. We’ve got quite a few dates open, including the mem-bership dinner this month, April 18th. All cooks get to use the VC parking spot for the day.

egated mark set in the Whaler and enjoyed the wide range of boats sailing the course. By the time we got back to the Club, Barbara Widawski and Maureen had everything in hand getting the food out before the on-slaught. Rick did yeomen work behind the bar while S/C Mark Register was again relegated to head chef and bar-b-quer.

If I haven’t mentioned it enough, if you haven’t been to the Club to see all the activity, your missing out on some great socializing, great sailing, and a whole lot of fun. Until next month.....Tom

I would like to thank all of you that have been so cooperative in helping my and the club with the recycling initiative. Along with your help,I have been

shuttling the full bags of empties into the race locker at least once a week, we almost have enough for the second run to the recycling center. This isn’t the most prestigious task I’ve done but I believe it’s for a good cause and I appreciate all the help I’ve been getting. Keep up the good work and remember that all the proceeds go into a pot and the general membership will decide what to do with the money at the end of this year. My first run brought us a little over $20.00. I plan to go again next week and we should do much better than that. Drink Up! ,

Thank You Sincerely, Robert Symer, Port Captain

SCCYC Welcomes the C-15 1-Design Fleet

by John RichardsonSCCYC has gained a new dinghy fleet, the Coro-nado 15 (C-15) fleet. Boat owners voted March 4th to form a new fleet, with 4 owners attending. John Richardson, SCCYC Membership Chair, was elected Fleet Captain. Also attending was Vincent Pater-noster, 2008 C-15 National Fleet Commodore, who was elected fleet measurer. The new fleet displayed a boat at the SCCYC open-ing day ceremonies, at which time information on the boat and the fleet was made avail-able. Attendees were invited to the C-15 open house, which is happening Sunday, March 29th, from 1 to 6 p.m. at SC-CYC.CORONADO 15 OPEN

HOUSEDo you like to “just hang out?” Then come join the newly formed C-15 fleet for their open house at SCCYC on Sunday March 29th, from 1 to 6 p.m. The fleet will have boats in the water for you to try out. We are hoping there will be suffi-cient wind so that you can “hang out” with us. Inter-ested, but can’t make it? E-mail John Richardson at [email protected]. The fleet is actively looking for boats and crew.

Lost and Foundby Bruce Fleck

If you find something laying around the club or leave something laying around the club the traditional lost and found box is the top shelf in the podium. Sometimes smaller stuff is kept behind the bar. Larger coats and fowl weather gear gets put in the office for lack of room in the podium.

Over the last four or five months we have been accumulating a number of eye glasses. They can be claimed from behind the bar.

in limited production today. Minimum boat weight for racing is 385 lbs., while minimum crew weight is 300 lbs. The cockpit has a flat sole and is self drain-ing, with no centerboard obstruction while sailing up-wind. Used boats with trailer sell in the $1000 range. Check out www.Coronado15.org.

It’s 95 degrees and when the East wind blows, it keeps the sand flies and mosquitoes away. The power is back on and we had running water for half a day. The geckos in the house eat the small bugs. The diving is good and the beers are 25 lempiras ($1.30). Coffee and baleadas are only 10 lempiras each (About 56 cents). Good fruit is hard to find in this heat.

SCCYC Celebrates

Opening Day for 2009

Temperate climes and cloudy skies greeted members and dignitaries for our 77th opening day. Brev-ity was again the soul of wit as we clocked our ceremony in at around 18 minutes from Canon to Canon, including an IOBG Induc-tion and the re-presentation of our SCYA Club of the Year Award. The club looked fabulous thanks to the work of our many volunteers and the drinks flowed freely and our refreshments were quickly con-sumed. Our hospitality continued into the afternoon as many guests returned for more. Photos by Yayoi Otani and Mike Blumentahl

28 Boats Race Round the Buoys inFive Classes in 2009 Les Storrs Series

By Mel Widawski South Coast Corinthian Yacht Club opened the Spring

racing season in Marina Del Rey on March twenty first with the Les Storrs Sailing Regatta. Twenty eight boats filled out 5 fleets for one day of round the buoy racing.

The boats were divided into PHRF A and B classes, Martin 242, J24 and a potpourri PHRF C class. The PHRF C class ranged in handicap from a low of 198 to a high of 291.

Saturday saw sunny skies with light, shifty winds that caused the first race start to be postponed, and the windward mark to change from race to race.

The Farr 44,Bravurra, beat Powerplay for first place in the PHRF “A” fleet with John Staff and his Plankton crew rounding out the top three.

In the “B” fleet Shawn Ivie and the J/30 Friction loss crew scored bullets for all three races to win the class. Trac-ey Kenney and her Open 5.70 Hat Trick team were second edging out Rob Bray and his Open 6.50 Crash.

In the J/24 fleet, it was close racing with Scott Tobin’s Ho’omele with a narrow victory over of James Baurly’s Critter. Max James team on Chowder took third.

In the 9 boat strong Martin 242 fleet, it was SMWYC’s Mike George and crew aboard All in with consistent races to clinch first place. SMWYC’s Mark Sands in Sandbox took second place from Liz Hjorth’s Blarney representing CYC for third. Trolleycar took 4th with Dean in 5th place. The Martin 242 class was given a race with three beats and three spinnaker sets that really let crew work show the skill in winning in this very competitive one-design class.

The C fleet, with a Holder 20, 3 Santana 20s, a Gladi-ator 24 and a Columbia 22, was a widely variant combina-tion. SCCYC’s own William Elmer Bloodhound a Santana 20 claimed first. Bruce Fleck’s Bandit took the silver. John Duthie all the way from Morro Bay Yacht Club with his Holder 20 took third place honors. The first race was marred by two withdrawals caused by violation of restricted areas.

Principal Race Officer was, Stu Coleman, aboard the Is-

lander 36, Camelot IV with Shari Landon, Jim Doherty, and Mel Widawski throwing flags and scoring, and brand new gunner, Mike Quigley, starting and finishing the races. Team Ukulele was Tom and Karmen Estlow aboard the mark-set boat. Hospitality was provided by Maureen Doherty and Barbara Widawski, assisted by Mark Register manning the barbeque, and the bar was ably lead by Rick Horner the post-race festivities.

Thirty three satin etched pint glass trophies were awarded at the SCCYC clubhouse Saturday with others go-ing to the R/C and hospitality staff that makes SCCYC such a great club to race with and post-race party with!
