PATTERSON PRESS APRIL 2013
A PTA PUBLICATION OF PATTERSON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
From the PTA President...Happy Spring! I hope everyone enjoyed the break and spent quality Bme with your families. The next PTA meeBng is on Tuesday, April 16th in the MPR. Alka Tyle from the district will be giving an overview on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and MathemaBcs) and the work that is being done in this area. We will also be voBng on the nominaBng slate for the ExecuBve Board that was presented at the last general membership meeBng.
Please take a few minutes to view the latest video on the district website regarding Virtual Charter Schools. This will have a direct impact on our students and the dollars the district receives to educate our children. You may access the video by going on IPSD.org and then 204TV.org. This is being proposed for the fall school year and the school board will vote at the next school board meeBng. If the school board denies the applicaBon, the K-‐12 Concepts organizaBon can appeal through the courts and possibly have the school board decision overruled. As parents, we need to stay informed and voice our concerns by contacBng all school board members.
We hope everyone supports Culvers Day on Tuesday, April 9th. There is no school on this day, so stop in or drive thru and enjoy lunch or dinner! (Please menBon Pa[erson School when ordering ).
The Variety Show will be held on Friday, April 12th. This is always a fun event and a Bme to see Pa[erson students shine. Thank you to Eileen Boffa and her many volunteers for the countless hours of organizing the event.
With the warmer weather on the way, and more walkers and bikers, PLEASE obey all traffic laws such as NO U TURNS ON LAWRENCE INTO CARPOOL LINE. We have seen an increase in U TURNS and this is not allowed. Safety of our students is the most important factor so please slow down and do the right thing. Your children are watching and we need to be good role models. Many students cross at the designated cross walk on Lawrence near Carlyle and feel safe doing this. However, we have had many close calls due to U TURNS and do not want an unfortunate accident to happen.
Please consider volunteering next year at Pa[erson! We have many opportuniBes for parents to help either at home or at school. Without parents stepping up, many programs will have to be seriously looked at and possibly disconBnued. Please do not let that happen. Elementary school is the Bme to volunteer and enjoy this Bme in your child’s life. Feel free to contact any member of the PTA board to see what opportuniBes are right for you!
Fall Carnival will be returning again next year as our largest PTA fundraiser! Please contact Donna Widmann if you are interested in co-‐chairing or helping in anyway.
Donna WidmannPTA President

From the Principal...Dear Pa[erson Families,
Spring has just arrived and at Pa[erson, we begin our final quarter of the school year. The last 2 months of school are always exciBng and busy Bmes. Students and staff alike are thrilled to welcome spring and all the outdoor sports and acBviBes that come with it, along with end of the year celebraBons beginning at school. At the same Bme, our students are in the final stretch of the school year academically, working to master essenBal skills for their grade level. We have many exciBng things happening at Pa[erson in this final quarter too. We greatly appreciate your support in helping students maintain an academic focus, balancing spring acBviBes with school work, in this last quarter of the year.
BYOT reaches Pa[erson this quarter. 5 staff members will pilot Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT) acBviBes during 4th quarter with their students. If your child’s class is parBcipaBng, you will receive a le[er explaining the process in detail. 30 BYOT classrooms have been in place in IPSD since 2011 and the district is slowly expanding this 21st century learning opportunity to more schools and classrooms. BYOT allows students to bring in Internet accessible devices such as ITouches, Kindle Fires, Galaxy players, Tablets, Notebook computers, etc. The devices are used for cooperaBve acBviBes during specific Bmes in class to enhance student’s learning. Students without a device will be able to use a school device, but by allowing students to bring their own, we reduce the number the school needs to provide and students learn on devices they are familiar with. The Indian Prairie EducaBonal FoundaBon (IPEF) has provided Pa[erson with five I-‐Touches to be used by BYOT students without a device. Our InstrucBonal Technology Team will be hosBng a fundraiser on May 3rd at 6:30pm to add to our school owned student technology devices. During BYOT acBviBes, both student and school owned devices will access the Internet wirelessly via our schools BYOT connecBon that has security and student filters in place. We are excited about the possibiliBes BYOT can bring to instrucBonal acBviBes and will share informaBon about the progress of this pilot program at upcoming PTA MeeBngs.
Pa[erson will be hosBng a Volunteer Apprecia/on Tea on Thursday, April 25th from 2:30pm – 3:15pm for all our volunteers this year. We couldn’t do it without you! This tea is our way of saying thank you for all you do, all year long, to make Pa[erson such a great place! We would especially like to recognize the 2012-‐2013 PTA ExecuBve Board for their outstanding leadership this year. Thank you to President Donna Widmann, Vice President of AdministraBon Karen Amundsen, Vice President of Finance Janet Juarez, Vice President of Enrichment Michelle Bassi, Treasurer Jennifer Beason, and Secretary Alissa Chrisos. We hope that you will be able to join us for this celebraBon.
Other exciBng April events are: Third Grade Habitat Night is Wed. April 3rd from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. Report Cards go home on Friday April 5th. There is no school on April 9th; teachers will be meeBng for school improvement planning. Our Second Grade Literacy Night is Thurs. April 11th from 6:30pm-‐ 7:30pm. Our Band and Orchestra students will perform a demonstraBon for students during the school day on April 12th and our PTA Sponsored Variety Show is Friday Night, April 12th at 6:00pm. ElecBons for the 2013-‐2014 PTA ExecuBve Board will take place at the PTA MeeBng on Tuesday April 16th at 9:30 in the MPR and Our Spring Chorus Concert is Wed. April 24th at 6:30pm. Remember the Volunteer AppreciaBon Tea is at 2:30pm on April 25th. We hope to see you at one of these exciBng events during 4th quarter at Pa[erson!
Sincerely,Michele FrostPrincipal

Bicycle Safety Reminder
As spring slowly begins, more and more students will be riding bicycles to school. The rules for riding bikes to Pa[erson are important. If it has been awhile since you had a “family talk” about bike safety, now is a good Bme to do so.
All bike riders: Bike riders will be dismissed from the classrooms early. This will allow extra Bme for bike riders to vacate the
area surrounding the school and lessen congesBon for walkers. Walkers will be dismissed at 3:35. We strongly recommend that students wear helmets when bicycling to school or at any Bme. All bikers should stay on sidewalks, at all /mes and follow the crossing guard’s instruc/ons. We ask all bikers to walk their bikes on school property and if instructed by the crossing guards, to ensure
the safety of the pedestrians during arrival and dismissal. Thank you for your cooperaBon! Be Safe, Be RespecQul, Be Responsible!

Pre-registration and registration materials will be used to anticipate the need for half day kindergarten classes, but final decisions, including location, will not be made until after the registration deadline of May 24, 2013. We need the Pre-Registrat ion information on the attached sheet as soon as possible, but no later than February 15, 2013 , so that we can begin planning kindergarten enrollment for the upcoming school year. This Pre-Registration information will be used to form a kindergarten mailing list. Once on the mailing list, additional information will be mailed to eligible kindergarten parents. If you have any neighbors who do not presently have school-aged children, but will have an incoming kindergartner, please give them a copy of this form or ask them to call our office at 630-428-6500 so that we can send them this information. I look forward to meeting you at the Kindergarten Parent Preview Night. Please mark your calendars!
