There has been a bit of a fuss recentlyabout what we call “Easter Eggs” andthe removal of the word “Easter” frompackaging.

Some have seen the removal of theword Easter as agreat affrontto thereligiousnature of thefestival, andyet anotherinstance ofsecularisation.

I mustadmit that this would all have completelypassed me by were it not for the news –most of the eggs are unwrapped (thepackaging unidentifiable) and eaten veryquickly in my house!

I think the factthat the Eggs aregiven at all is a verypositive thing.Eggs, along withbunnies and chicks, remind us of thenew life of Spring, when we leave thecold and dark ofwinter and toppedup with vitamin d feel much happier andmore lively.

Of course the egg has manyconnotations in traditional religions, notably fertility and rebirth, howeverthere is another aspect to it that suits theChristian understanding very well.

The egg is usually empty (unless allyou get is a creme egg or a mini egg!);and its emptiness is itself a symbol – asymbol of the empty tomb.

When Jesusrose on thatfirst Eastermorning heleft his graveclothes andhis tombempty. Theangel told

the women:“Do not be afraid; for I know that you

are looking for Jesus who has beencrucified.

"He is not here, for He has risen, justas He said. Come, see the place whereHe was lying.”

The emptinessof the tomb is avery important partof the story.

So althoughhaving an emptyegg makes it muchcheaper toproduce, it is also avery importantsymbol of what the

season is all about. It’s probably extremely unlikely that

you still have an Easter egg but if you doI hope that you enjoy it all the more for this!

With best wishes for the Easterseason.

Broadwater Farm would be lost underthousands of houses.

Do youwant to carry on livin

There are plans to build thousandsof new homes, filling in the greenspaces and farmland betweenWest Malling, East Malling,Ditton and Leybourne.

Tonbridge & Malling BoroughCouncil, under direction from thegovernment, is putting together astrategic plan to develop the areato alleviate the housing crisis atthe cost of our environment.

It has already carried out aborough-wide Strategic LandAvailability Assessment that hasidentified areas it can assign forhousebuilding. You can see theareas it has identified on the mapoverleaf.

The next step is consultationwith the the community anddrawing up a detailed plan of whereand when the houses will be built.

The proposals includeextending Kings Hill to coverBroadwater Farm and most ofEast Malling Research Centre, that will effectively double thesize of the Kings Hill

development.Houses are also proposed for

both sides of the West Mallingbypass, with developmentcreepingtowardsLeybourne.

The resulthas beendescribed asthe MiltonKeynes of theSoutheast.

The councilcould insteaddecide to build on brownfieldsites or reclaimed industrial land. But developers would prefer tobuild properties in desirableareas like West Malling, wherethey can command higher prices.

All this development wouldmean years of noise, pollutionand disruption from the endlessconstruction, devaluing yourproperty, increasing traffic andparking problems, and straininglocal infrastructure such as

There's so much going on in your garden foryou to enjoy, says Adam McKay

Your backyardreality show

It does seem there are a plethora of TVreality shows that range from the A&Eward and its trials and tribulations, to thejungle where so-called celebrities facetheir fears and are mostly embarrassedin the name of entertainment. But, didyou know just outside your back door isa reality show that is full of drama, happiness, sorrow and beauty.

I’m talking about the wildlife thatadorns our gardens. Birds, butterfliesand hedgehogs are a few of the cast.Your garden could bethe set of the mostspectacular realityshow and you may noteven know it.

Everyday I findmyself (mainly firstthing in the morning)standing at the kitchenwindow watching avariety of birdsgathering food, bathingand nesting. It always

amazes me what delight Samantha andI get from spotting a goldfinch or a greatspotted woodpecker in our garden. I’mno `twitcher`, but I am thoroughlyentertained. My garden attractsnumerous species of birds and there’sno magic formula to them visiting.

All I do is have a variety of feedersand food which brings in this group ofactors for my entertainment. By having aassortment of food (peanuts, fat balls, sunflower seeds, fruit etc.) Means I get a

diverserangeof birdlife. I’ve

counted 13 species of birds that havepopped in throughout the year.

By adding awater feature youcan make yourgarden a ‘one-stopshop’ for thesefeathered friendsas they need tokeep their wingsclean and quenchtheir thirst. Youdon’t need a pond(although thatbrings in otherwildlife), just a birdbath or even alarge saucer woulddo just fine. Justremember to cleanit every so often asthey don’t have thebest toiletmanners!

Lastly, by fittinga couple of nestingboxes in placesthat are out ofreach of the localmoggy, the circleof life can be seen.

I know thatsome people fitweb cams intothem to watch thehatchlings. As Isaid, I’m not a

`twitcher` so I haven’t gone down thatavenue, but I find it a joy to know newlife is being created in my garden. I alsoshare the pain when I find a young bird(fledgling) that wasn’t strong enough tocope with the big wide world. But that’snature, and it’s not always happinessand light. Nature is reality, not thestaged variety we see on some shows.

As we all know, the robin is the

gardener’s friend; and where ever I workI will always find him nearby. They arefearless little creatures who will sit justinches away from me waiting for thechance to scavenge the soil I’ve justworked on. But, what you may not knowis that they are very territorial and willfight for their patch. In the winter theirsong is the only one that is usuallyheard. But, remember, he’s not singing

for yourbenefit: he’swarning otherrobins not totrespass onhis plot.

Anotherbonus forattractingbirds into your garden is they will seek

out and eat aphidsand other critters, like slugs, whichwill help keep yourplants healthier.

There is a wordof warning though ifyou encouragewildlife into yourgarden (and thishas happened tome on severaloccasions), youmay forget the timeand be late for thetrain/appointment/bus or even thatTV reality show!
