Stouffer-Mayer Volume 8 April 2015 What is Dutch Auction? How you can get involved on pg. 3 The Tribune W Article by: Amanda Atkinson ikipedia, which is always right, says “a Dutch auction is a type of auction in which the auctioneer begins with a high asking price which is lowered until some participant is willing to accept the auctioneer's price, or a predetermined reserve price (the seller's minimum acceptable price) is reached. The winning participant pays the last announced price. This is also known as a clock auction or an open-outcry descending-price auction.” Huh? That sounds weird. This is not at all what the Stouffer Dutch Auction is. The Stouffer Dutch Auction is acombination of silent and live auction. During the silent auction people write their bids down on sheets of paper. Someone else can come behind you and bid more for that item. The live auction is similar to what you see on tv or movies. An auctioneer starts the bidding at acertain price. People shout out if they’d like to bid more. The Stouffer Dutch Auction also includes a catered lunch from Veracruzana and dessert from Lil’ Pop Shop. 1

We Are Leaving for the Quadrangle

my and I would like to thank every person who has been associated with Stouffer College House during the time that we have lived here. Stouffer has been an amazing community, and we will always think of it as home. That is why it is very difficult for us to let you know that we will be leaving Stouffer. You many have noticed that in the last few months all of the Senior Staff other than us has gone to or has announced that they are going to the Quadrangle. Annette and Benjy left to become the new Faculty Masters in Fisher-Hassenfeld, Amanda and Noah are leaving to become the House Dean in Ware, and Juan and Melissa are leaving for the newly-created Senior Tutor position in Riepe. Amy and I are not immune to peer pressure. So we are moving to the Quad, to become Faculty Fellows in Ware, under the leadership of Annette (and, in reality, KunKun). We will of course miss each of you very much. It has been an extraordinary experience to live in such a strong community. But we just want to be like everyone else. Please come to cookies; there aren't many of them left.

FAQs for Dutch Auction

What kind of things can I bid on? There are lots of great items. This year some of our early donations include a Mayer 4 t-shirt,homemade brownies, a vase of Phoenix tears, the old Stouffer hammock, a Stouffer t-shirt quilt,a hand-crocheted scarf, and much, much more.

Should I donate an item for auction? Sure, why not? Maybe you have a special dinner you can cook for someone? Or are you willing to do a Wawa run for someone during finals? Perhaps you are a senior and want to donate some of you old things that you don’t want to take home. Contact Special Events manager LauraDoherty at [email protected] to make a donation.

Where does the money go? All funds raised at Dutch Auction go to the Melissa Sengbusch Inspiration Scholarship Fund.Melissa was a former Stouffer resident and Penn Nursing student who passed away fromleukemia before finishing her studies at Penn. Before the Auction starts, Amy Nichols will sharesome memories of Melissa with us. Hopefully that answers your questions. Be sure to mark your calendar and get some cash out to make some winning bids. See you on Sunday, April 19th.
