Awards Galore for City Arts

In the 1970’s and early 80’s touring theatre companies had no suitable venue in Kilkenny City, and therefore groups such as druid and the Irish theatre Co. the Irish national Ballet travelled to the Convent in Callan to perform. It was indicative of the interest in professional theatre that the School of Music on the Ormonde road and the Old dining room (tapestry room) in Kilkenny Castle could comfortably accommodate audiences.

And then there were four

Meet Pakie. An orphan, a storyteller, an adventurer, a survivor. He may not be the sharpest sandwich in the toolbox, but Pakie

knows a thing or two about the history of his native town – from the vicious Vikings, to the less-than Christian Brothers. Pakie’s a laugh a minute… but Pakie’s got secrets. Secrets the

God fearing people of Oggle may not be ready to hear.

Written and performed by Peter Gowen (Charlie, Love/Hate, The Butcher Boy),

and directed by Donal Gallagher (Love, Peace & Robbery), this is a hilarious and heart-breaking story of small towns and

even smaller minds. “…a comic tale of our times – startling, enjoyable and sad – a sharply

faceted performance” Irish Times

Pas de Quatre, the romantic classic caused a sensation when it was created for the four greatest ballerinas of the time in 1845. Next up, Sing Sing Sing inspired by Bob Fosse, a legendary choreographer of Broadway & Hollywood throughout the 60s & 70s. The second half of the programme features the premiere of a powerful and magical new ballet, Lost, by Ludovic Ondievla. BI continues its commitment to new work in presenting this compelling piece by this ‘young rising choreographer’ (The Guardian).

With lighting by award winning designer Paul Keogan, this mixed programme shows the diversity of the company following its wonderful tour of Swan Lake, which ‘ticked all the boxes’ (Sunday Independent) and was hailed as ‘one of best productions’ the company has done (Irish Mail on Sunday).

All mainstays of the acoustic, folk and roots world, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Aoife O’Donovan crossed paths many times throughout their careers. So, it comes as no surprise that – after an impromptu performance at the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival – the pieces fell into place for these three acclaimed musicians to collaborate.Performances on the I’m With Her Tour will be a culmination of all three artists playing together as one band; sets will include a mix of each other’s songs, cover songs and traditional songs.
