Back when blues was king and South Louisiana was

the breeding ground for some of the most memorable

American music ever recorded, at the heart of it was

Lazy Lester. This key figure of US blues music has

decades. Starting out as Lightnin’ Slim’s harpist of

choice, perhaps his most famous hits in his own

blues tradition Lester’s voice has enriched with

age and his harmonica playing has lost nothing.

Nora Guthrie, daughter of Woody Guthrie, gives

a personal talk about her father’s life and music

a hundred years since his birth. Woody Guthrie

is still one of the most influential artists in music,

counting Bob Dylan, John Lennon, Billy Bragg and

Bruce Springsteen and a myriad of others as fans.

You’ll also hear music from Alun Parry founder of

the Woody Guthrie Folk Club and one of the UK’s

leading political folk singer songwriters and Rich

Man’s Ruin a radical folk trio who have built a fine

reputation with their three-part harmonies and

versions of Guthrie songs.

in 2002 but you might also know them from their

work with Bellowhead, Jon Boden & The Remnant

is dominated by Sweeney’s fiddle and the sweet and

distinctive voice of James and her accordion. April

sees the release of their highly anticipated second

album State and Ancientry. Sometimes their live

show includes Hannah’s clog dancing.

Filled with emotion, a survivor of great and terrible

events tells his tale. As he sings of his friend’s betrayal

alive. Other voices tell their stories, a great chorus

becomes an angry crowd, and even the listeners

become part of the unfolding drama. This is Bach’s

St Matthew Passion, and it’s simply overwhelming.

Film music doesn’t have to mean Hollywood – in fact,

from the wartime thrills of The Dam Busters and

Dangerous Moonlight to the risqué high-jinks of the

Carry Ons, some of the most memorable film scores

are as British as bangers ‘n’ mash. John Wilson and

the Orchestra take a nostalgic journey to a world

where Shakespearean kings jostle with clog wearing

Lancastrians, where ladies in lavender take tea

on board the Orient Express, and where Spitfires

soar over Hogwarts Castle. These great British

tunes, including Walton’s Battle in the Air: Battle

of Britain, R. R. Bennett’s Love Theme: Yanks,

Suite: Murder on the Orient Express John Williams’

Harry’s Wondrous World and Addinsel’s Warsaw

Concerto: Dangerous Moonlight, are the soundtrack
