AprilonCreteInWesternEuropeyouwereluckycelebratingEasterwithalotofsun.WealsohopeforasunnyEasteronCrete.Thisyear,OrthodoxEaster isoneweek later,onSunday,April28.Easter is the most important celebration of the year and everyone is already busy withpreparations:Easterbreadisbaked,sheepandgoatsareslaughtered,thehouseiscleanedand on the outside it is painted white again, people buy new clothes and beautifullydecoratedEastercandles.Olddebtsarepaidoffanddisputesarebeingsettled.Inshort,inGreece,Easterisanewbeginninginmanyways.

EasterinKournasInKournasonEasterSunday theStreet in front of thebakery is full of tables, chairsandbarbecues.Fromaround12o'clockthefamilieslivinginthestreetcelebratetheEasterpartytogether.Thebaker'sovenisalwayswarm,soitisusedbyanyonewhowantstobakelargeovendishes.Inthemorningitisverybusy,becausethenthebakingtinsarebroughtandattheendofthemorningtheyarepickedupagain.WeoftencelebrateEasterhereinthestreetandenjoythedeliciousfood,especiallywithalotofmeat,withthefamilies.
IswinterreallyovernowonCrete?AlthoughitisalmostMaynow,itisnotreallyspringweatherinCrete.Wehadafewnicedayswithsunandtemperaturesabove20degrees,butmostdayswehadnorthwindfromRussia(cold)orrain.Duetothewet,coldandstormywinteralotofdamagehasbeencausedtotheroads.Notonlyinthewestoftheisland,butalsointhesouthandintheeastofCrete.Theytrytorepairalldamageasquicklyaspossiblesothatalltouristattractionsareeasilyaccessibleagain.
TheSamariagorgeislikelytoopenatthebeginningofMay,butmuchdamagestillneedstoberepaired.Soitisnotentirelycertainyet.Wealsohavenoideaaboutthesituationintheothergorges,butitiscertainthatmuchhaschanged.Fortunately,therearestillplentyofnon-touristicplacesonCretethatareworthvisiting.ThefirsthotelshavebeenopenedinGeorgioupolisandKavrosandsomerestaurantsandshopsareopen.InRethymnonandChaniaitisalreadymuchbusierwithtourists.
Mandaliisopenfrom8Aprilandalthoughitisstillearlyintheseason,peopleknowwheretofindus.TheyhaveseenitontheInternet(Tripadvisor,GoogleBusiness,Facebookorthewebsite)ortheyhavehearditfromyou☺
Whentheweatherwasniceforafewdays we saw the aftermath of thewinter storms on the beach atKavros: reeds, rooted and all sweptaway by the water from the rivers;the river Delfina, which flows fromLake Kournas, was a broad wildriver;wecouldplaymikadowith thewashedupreeds.
Also the river Mousellas, nearArgiroupolis, had been at least 5meters wide and almost 2 metersdeep.
The heavy rain left deep marks onthe dirtroads in the back garden ofKournas.
NewsaboutourdonkeysAnotherreasonthatpeopleknowwhere to findus is,ofcourse, thebirthof thedonkeyfoal!!!Yesindeed,afoalwasborn,agirlandwecallherZoë.
Our youngest donkey, Cleo, was pregnant, but we didn't know this until the end ofJanuary.We thoughtshewas fat fromeating thewildvegetables thatarenowgrowingeverywhere. But when we noticed in January that her udder was getting thicker, westartedcounting:onApril 2 last year, ourdonkeyshad2dayscompany fromaCretandonkeystallionandthegestationperiodofdonkeysis12to14months.AndthefoalwasbornonApril3,surprise!!!
AlthoughCleoherselfisonly3yearsold,sheisawonderfulmother.Zoëisfed,caredforandraisedasifitisher3rdfoal.Zoëisalsodoingfine:shedrinkswell,hasbeeneatinggrass,strawandwildvegetables(withher2teeth)sincethe2ndday.Sheisgrowingveryfastandcanrunandjumplikethebest.The4donkeysarenowtogetherinthemeadowwiththeshelterandthatisgoingwell.
Eos and Popy now do the donkey walk together with Arno and in the afternoon thedonkeys often go out and eat and walk together. Because Cleo must also have hermovementandZoëcanpracticerunningandjumping.
VideoontelevisionaboutKournasOnApril 4, a camera crew fromCrete.tv came toKournas to recorda videoabout thevillage of Kournas.Whenwe told them that a donkey foal was born in the village theprevious day, they alsowanted to film this.SoZoëwasnot evena day old, but couldalreadybeseenontelevision.You can see the television program via this link. They have made recordings at LakeKournas,thevillageofKournasandArgiroupolis.
Mandaliin2019Thestoreisopenagainandwearelookingforwardtoaniceseason.Inadditiontomanywell-known products, we also have a few new items at Mandali this year. Such asaromatherapypendants,essentialoil fromherbs fromKournas, lemonmarmalade,newpostcardsandattherequestofmanycustomers,wenowalsohavetheoliveoil inatinpackage(wehavefoundcanswithoutplasticontheinside).Thedonkeywalks thisyearareeverymorning fromMonday toFriday, from10a.m. toabout noon. On Saturday the donkeys enjoy their day off and on Sunday Mandali isclosedandwealsoenjoyadayofrest.Thisseason theBotanicalwalkEXTRA isonlyon request,early in themorningat8:00AM(orearlier)orintheafternoonat4:00PM.Becausebothwalksaremorefunandinterestingwithsmallgroups,itisbettertomakeareservationwhenyouwanttojoinus.Did you see theMandaliwebsite?
