Company Fund recently flew 30 original Rosie the Riveters to Washington, D.C. to celebrate their contributions to the war effort. The Rosies, ages 88-98, visited the World War II Memorial and attended a special luncheon in their honor at the Library of Congress on Capitol Hill!

These women were traditional housewives, mothers and daughters in the 1940s when suddenly everything changed. Millions of men left home to fight in World War II, creating a critical shortage of available workers.

The country needed immediate help to produce the machines of war. These women came to the rescue!

They became known as Rosie the Riveters. In addition to their work on assembly lines, they had a lasting impact on the country, changing perceptions and expanding opportunities for future women in the workforce.

Ford and its Willow Run Bomber Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan, were a major force in the Arsenal of Democracy. The plant's mile-long assembly line produced nearly 9,000 B-24 Liberators - one every hour. At peak production, Willow Run employed 42,000 workers. Up to one-third of them were women industrial workers.

"These women not only helped win a war, they paved the way for future generations to achieve economic and personal independence," said Jim Vella, President, Ford Motor Company Fund and Community Services. "It is an honor to celebrate their vital contributions to our country

and the cause of freedom."

Cry Havoc! An A-20 Is Coming to AirVenture Oshkosh

Of the more than 7,000 Douglas A-20 Havocs built for U.S. and Allied forces during World War II, just a handful

survive, and, as far as we know, only one flies—and it’s coming to Oshkosh. The twin-engine light bomber and attack aircraft is part of Rod Lewis’ Lewis Air Legends collection based in San Antonio, Texas. Lewis Air Legends is also the owner of the beloved P-38F Glacier Girl, as well as the well-known Reno racer Rare Bear, a highly modified F8F-2 Bearcat.

Lewis’ Havoc was built in 1943 as an A-20G, is powered by two 1,700-hp Wright R-2600s, armed with six 7.7mm (.303 caliber) machine guns (six Brownings, one Vickers) and could carry a bomb load of 4,000 pounds.

The airplane was previously owned by the Lone Star Flight Museum, but has since been fully restored to its original, stock military configuration. AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 is expected to be the A-20’s first official public display since the restoration.

“We’re really excited to see this beautiful airplane this summer,” said Rick Larsen, EAA’s vice president of communities and member programs who coordinates features and attractions at AirVenture. “As the only known flying example, the A-20 is truly unique and will be a great addition to the warbird lineup at Oshkosh 2016.”

The exact arrival and air show demonstration dates will be announced as they are finalized.

FIFI to Return to Oshkosh for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016

EAA and the

Commemorative Air Force are pleased to jointly announce that FIFI, the Boeing B-29 Superfortress, will return to EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016.

FIFI is the main star of the CAF AirPower History Tour which regularly tours the U.S. bringing the sights, smells, and sounds of WWII aviation to Americans of all ages. FIFI’s dedicated crews volunteer thousands of hours to honor the sacrifice of the men and women of WWII and Korea.

“We are very pleased that FIFI will once again be on display at Boeing Centennial Plaza at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh,” said Jack Pelton, president of EAA.

“The CAF and FIFI have a deep appreciation to EAA for making it possible for the plane to return,” said CAF President Stephan Brown. “This is the one place in the world where so many can view up close and personal the iconic aircraft of WWII, as well as thousands of show planes. We are honored to be a part of it.”

The airplane will arrive on Monday, July 25. As an added feature, FIFI will be available for a limited number of rides. Visit Air Power's tour

website for more information. The rides will be delivered from the Appleton Airport on Tuesday through Thursday. The B-29 will be accompanied at Appleton by the P-51 Mustang Gunfighter and two World War II trainers – a PT-13 Stearman and T-6 Texan.

FIFI is celebrating her 41st year of operation as the World’s only flying B-29 Superfortress. The CAF hopes that FIFI will soon be joined in the air by Doc, another B-29 progressing toward flight.

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, first flown in 1942, began active service in 1944 and is best known as the aircraft whose missions over Japan helped bring about the end of World War II. It was designed as a replacement for the older B-17s and B-24s, with longer range and greater bomb loads. The B-29 was the first pressurized American bomber and represented state of the art technology at the time.

The B-29 was also used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until the late 1950s. This year is Boeing’s centennial celebration.

Third class medical reform will once again go to the full Senate for a vote, this time as part of the National Defense Authorization Act.

The Senate has already approved third class medical reform language from the Pilot’s Bill of Rights 2 twice in the past five months—first as standalone legislation and then

as part of the Senate’s FAA reauthorization bill.

The Senate Armed Services Committee on May 13 approved the National Defense Authorization Act, including third class medical reform language from the Pilot's Bill of Rights 2, by a vote of 23 to 3. The full Senate is expected to take up the measure later this month.

Team Begins Work on Flight of Passage Movie

Pia Bergqvist / flyingmag.com

Rinker Buck’s famous book comes to life on the big screen.

In an intimate screening at the Silent Movie Theatre in Los Angeles, the premiere of a short version of what may become a full feature movie based on Rinker Buck’s highly acclaimed memoir Flight of Passage was shared with a full house of viewers.

The true story follows Buck and his brother Kernahan, who in 1966 at age 15 and 17, flew across the United State in a Piper Cub they had bought and restored. The brothers were at that time the youngest on record to have flown across the country, and the flight drew significant media attention.

Two young actors, Zach Callison and Joseph Schirle, play Rinker and Kernahan Buck. Aviators will also recognize aerobatic pilot

extraordinaire Sean Tucker, who acts as “Hank the Stearman Man.” Rinker Buck himself makes a cameo as well.

The short film is well-produced, with spectacular aerial footage and intense scenes that put the viewer right in the cockpit with the two aviators during their adventure. The creators of the short, Colin Eberling and Henry Saine, are now looking for the funding to complete the full feature.

INTERESTING AIRCRAFT and OTHER THINGS THAT FLY

A Visit to the American Helicopter Museum

Hal Bryan, EAA Lifetime 638979, Senior Editor

“Cool! A flying banana!” That was the first thing we said as we drove up to the American

Helicopter Museum and Education Center in West Chester, Pennsylvania. To some, West Chester is known as the birthplace of the Commodore Vic-20. To others, it’s the original home of Sharples Tubular Cream Separators; as everyone knows, these were the centrifugal separators of choice for millions of farmers in the early 20th century. But to hardcore aviation geeks like us, West Chester is the place with all the cool helicopters.

George Bogardus flew the Little Gee Bee from Oregon to

Washington, D. C., in 1947, 1949, and 1951. These three flights helped to convince officials in the Civil Aeronautics Administration and the Civil Aeronautics Board that amateurs could design and build light aircraft that were safe, reliable, and capable of practical cross-country flights. The CAA enacted legislation in 1952 that for the first time sanctioned the registration and operation of amateur-built aircraft. Later that year, Paul Poberezny founded the Experimental Aircraft Association, which has grown into a worldwide organization with more than 600,000 members.

Little Gee Bee was built before World War II. With financial support from Lee Eyerly of Salem, Oregon, Tom Story of Portland designed and built an aircraft in 1938 patterned on Leslie Long's Longster. Story's airplane took the nickname Wimpy but when George Bogardus acquired it after the war, he renamed it Little Gee Bee.

WICHITA — The FAA has deemed the B-29 known as Doc airworthy by officially presenting the restoration crew with an FAA airworthiness certificate.

The airworthiness certificate is the most notable milestone yet for the team working to restore the historic B-29.

It also came three days before the 16th anniversary of Doc arriving in Wichita on May 23, 2000, to begin its restoration journey.

“It’s been nearly 60 years since Doc has flown and 16 years since this majestic warbird arrived in Wichita to be restored, and now we are another major milestone closer to a return to flight,” said Jim Murphy, Doc’s Friends Restoration Program Manager.

“Today, we celebrate this major milestone and honor the hundreds of thousands of hours of volunteer work that has gone into restoring our B-29. From the team who saved Doc from rusting away in the Mojave Desert in California, to the dedicated volunteers who have been working tirelessly on the restoration project since Doc was brought to Wichita 16 years ago, today is a great day.”

With the FAA airworthiness certificate in hand, the restoration team will soon submit an official request to the U.S. Air Force and Pentagon to be granted access to use the non-joint-use runway at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas, for test flight operations. Upon approval, the restoration crew can use the runway for high-speed taxi tests and other ground testing needed prior to first flight.

“The dream of getting Doc back into the air to serve as a flying memorial and museum to honor the men and women who served our nation in these airplanes, and those who built and maintained the fleet, just took a major step toward reality,” said Jeff Turner, Doc’s Friends

Page 28: APRIL MEETING: - Home - Chapter 1560 · Web viewSome of the highlights include Orbx, PILOT'S, Aerosoft, A2A Simulations, Jetline Systems, Boston Virtual ARTCC, VATSIM, IVAO, REX Game

chairman. “It’s because of Tony Mazzolini and hundreds of volunteers who have touched Doc along the way that we have reached this milestone. On behalf of the entire Doc’s Friends board, I thank you for all you have done.”

As for the scheduling of ground testing and eventually first flight, information will be provided online at B-29Doc.com.

Video: Planes of Fame 2016

Generalaviationnews.com

The 2016 edition of the Planes of Fame airshow was held April 30. Airailimages was on hand to film this commemoration of the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.

During the recreation, Japanese aircraft engage a civilian airplane before the actual attack. For the re-enactment, two restored A6M Zero fighters and a replica Val dive bomber flew.

A remarkable total of five P-40 Warhawks launched to represent the defenders of Pearl Harbor, culminating in a special missing man formation at the end of the remembrance.

Pinned against the hangar wall by a floor-filling mass of airplanes from a B-25 to a Pietenpol, The Mid-Atlantic Air Museum’s P-61 Black Widow restoration project seems unchanged from my last visit in 2014. Wearing its cowled but propless Pratt & Whitney R-28000 engines, it stands patiently on its tricycle gear waiting for its wings.

Aircraft Projects – Risks & Solutions

Airplane builders, both first-timers and builders with many previous successful builds, spend a significant amount of time investigating, researching, and studying which airplane they want to build. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always include considering potential risks and possible solutions. This is especially true when it comes to considering the loss of the project or injury to someone visiting their workshop. Your investment in your project is important and so is the safety for anyone who visits your workshop. This webinar will look at the risks to you and your project and just how easy it is to find solutions that will protect both.

6/15/16 7 p.m. CDT ADS-B, a Pilot's Guide: Equipping for 2020Qualifies for FAA Wings credit

Why Are You Thinking About Personal Insurance at a Time Like This?

When you're flying your airplane is not the time to be thinking about whether or not you have personal insurance that will protect your family if something goes wrong. This webinar is all about making sure your family's future is protected when the unthinkable happens. No, this isn't life insurance. The EAA Personal Insurance Plan offers insurance in case something happens to you, and it includes both flying and non-flying activities. It is easy to get inexpensive, and it is designed for the type of airplanes and flying EAA members like you do. This webinar will help EAA members find solutions before they go flying!

6/29/16 7 p.m. CDT Low-Cost Avionics STC Breakthrough

EAA announced in April 2016 at the Sun ’n Fun Fly-In the award of a revolutionary supplemental type certificate (STC) to bring low-cost avionics to the cockpit of standard category aircraft. EAA Government Advocacy Specialist Tom Charpentier will discuss how EAA worked with the FAA to enable the issuance of this ground-breaking STC approval. Additionally, details will be discussed about what it means for you and your aircraft.

7/6/16 7 p.m. CDT EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016 Features and Attractions

Learn about the exciting features and attractions that are expected for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2016. Join Rick Larsen, vice president of EAA communities and member programs, and Dennis Dunbar, director of AirVenture air show operations, as they provide the latest news on what to expect at Oshkosh 2016. They’ll discuss some of the interesting aircraft, people, and programs that you can expect during the annual EAA convention.

7/13/16 7 p.m. CDT Airspace Ace - Sampling the Alphabet SoupQualifies for FAA Wings credit

UHS Spinners

UHS spinners have been enhancing the nose of many different aircraft for over a decade. As well as adding to the appearance of your aircraft, they also aid in the cooling as air is directed into the cowling and, in many cases, may even enhance your airspeed by decreasing drag.

With over fifty patterns on file, we can produce spinners for a wide range of engine - prop configurations. Sizes range from

eight to fourteen inches.

Our spinners are individually crafted from casting grade fiberglass resins, re-enforced with aircraft cloth and, if required, carbon fiber.

When we have the necessary patterns, your spinner is delivered assembled, balanced, and ready to paint and install on your aircraft. If we do not have the pattern for your particular application, the spinner

2016 Chapter Schedule

We meet on the 3rd Saturday of the month at 1pm chatt/12 central. Regular meetings are normally held at Marion County Airport. Every third meeting will be held at Dallas Bay Airport, subject to the usual changes.

The Marion County terminal building is experiencing septic tank problems. Porta Potties have replaced the restrooms. This may require a change to Dallas Bay for regular meetings until the plumbing at Marion County Airport is fixed.

Regional EAA chapter pancake breakfasts tend to run on the same day of the month through Spring, Summer and Fall. I will collect them and have a regular breakfast calendar in the newsletter. This list is a combination of lists from Morty Lloyd, Bob Milam, Social Flight and the Chapter 190 home page. If you know of one that I don’t have or if one of the meals on this list is in error please let me know. If you
