  • Coloring Page: Discover Alphonse Mucha at the MSV

Born an ArtistAlphonse Mucha loved to draw, even as a very young child. Hecould draw before he could walk! His mom hung a pencil on astring around his neck so he could draw while he crawledaround on the floor. When he was 12 years old, Alphonse Muchasaw a beautiful painting in a church and realized he could makea living as an artist. He decided right then and there that’s whathe wanted to do when he grew up. Do you have a hobby? Doyou know what you want to be when you grow up?

What is Art Nouveau?Art Nouveau means “new art” in French. This type of art wasvery popular in Europe from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.Art Nouveau artists often used dramatic curving lines andflowers in their work. Alphonse Mucha is one of the mostfamous artists of the Art Nouveau style. For a while, peoplecalled Art Nouveau by the term “Mucha Style.”

Did You Know?In 1893 Alphonse Muchaillustrated a book for kidsabout an amazing whiteelephant. Written inFrench, the book waslater translated intoEnglish. It was calledMemoirs of a WhiteElephant. Mucha alsodesigned the cover. Youcan see this book in theMucha exhibition atthe MSV.
