Dear Parents, As I write this last newsletter article of the year I want to thank you for your support and prayers through-out this school year. We are so proud of our students who have already accomplished many great things and there is still time to finish strong in the weeks – yes, weeks – ahead. I also want to extend my gratitude to the entire school community for your partnership in our inaugural year of teaching and learning in a 1:1 environment. While there have been several bumps in the road, the Learners2Leaders program has far surpassed my expectations in its first year, and I am excited to see the continued evolution of our dynamic learning environment next year. Catholic Central will retain our de-layed starts for professional development on the last Wednesday of each month. Last spring, in compliance with the Office of Catholic Schools here in the diocese, Catholic Central issued a survey based on the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secon-dary Schools. This survey is the result of two years of broad collaboration among Catholic educators across the nation, which gives the Catholic community a common framework of universal characteristics of Catholic identity and agreed upon criteria for Catholic school excellence. I’d encourage you to take some time to respond to the survey, found here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Effectiveness_Parent by May 21st.

Prom: This year’s prom will be at the Prince Center on the campus of Calvin College on Saturday April 25. Doors open at 7:00pm and close at 7:45pm, please do not be late. Prom is a dance that includes dinner

and dancing. The cost is $120.00 per couple or $75.00 for stag (both juniors and seniors may attend stag).

Prom is open to all juniors and seniors, and only those sophomores asked to the dance by a junior or senior.

The dance will conclude at 11:00pm. This is a formal dance with specific expectations regarding attire and

conduct. To that end, please take a moment to read through the following guidelines. To be admitted to the

dance, those students attending and his/her guest must adhere to these guidelines.

Gentlemen’s attire: This is a black tie affair.

**Gentlemen are to arrive in either a white or black tuxedo. Grey, black or navy suits may be substituted.

**Hard soled dress shoes are required. **Shirts are to remain on and tucked at all times.

**Hair must be neatly groomed, in dress code. No unnatural color, spiked, or Mohawk styles are permitted.

Ladies attire:

**Ladies are to arrive in an elegant one piece, long (past the knee) formal evening gown. **Gowns with slits may be worn; however the slit may only reach finger tip length and not extend higher.

**The evening gown neckline must be modest in cut. If the gown has an open back then the opening may

not extend lower than the hips.

**Bare or sheer midriffs are not permitted.

Dancing is to be in good taste. Students may be asked to leave if inappropriate dancing continues.

Guest passes will be issued to guests who are in good standing with their home school and Catholic Central

High School. Guest passes will be made available two weeks prior to Prom. The home school of guests will

be required to sign off on this guest pass. All guests must follow the above guidelines.

Uniform Shorts: Seniors may begin wearing uniform shorts to school beginning Monday April 13. Under-

classmen may begin wearing uniform shorts on Friday May 1. Socks are required with all footwear.

Skirt Length: Uniform Skirt, no shorter than 3 inches above the knee may be worn at any time of the year. If the length of a student’s skirt has not been corrected to abide by our school policy, she will not be allowed

to attend class until the issue has been corrected. This may be that a parent delivers a change of clothes or

the school will issue Sunshine Uniform pants. Either case will result in additional disciplinary action.

Attendance: Remaining informed of absent students’ whereabouts is of importance in our commitment to

student’s safety and well being. Therefore, on a day of absence we ask that a parent/guardian call the atten-

dance office (233-5812) by 10 am. If a call has not been received by that time, students will receive an unex-cused absence and grades may be affected.

Messages may be left on the school’s voice messaging system, which is checked frequently.

When a student becomes ill at school we ask that they come to the office to call home so that we know they

are ill and can tend to their needs. Students are not to use their cell phones at any time while in school, in-cluding when they become ill.

Final Exams: Catholic Central will not make arrangements around Final Exams (June 8-11) to accommo-

date summer plans. Students who fail to sit for their scheduled Final Exams without receiving permission

from administration will receive a zero on the exam.

Take a Trip in English Class and Never Leave Your

Desk

Mrs. Rawe’s and Miss Rios’ senior English classes are

reading the book Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

by Jonathan Safran Foer. Oskar, the main character,

goes on a secret mission through the five boroughs of

New York city trying to discover the lock that matches

the key that belonged to his father, who died in the

World Trade Center on September 11. To bring the

book to life and develop better understanding of how

the main character changes and grows throughout his

hero’s journey, students used their iPads and Google’s

My Maps to create a map of the locations that Oskar

visited along the way. For each area of New York City

that Oskar visited, they would pin the location and

could view the surrounding area using Google Maps

Street View, add photos that pertained to the location,

and include a few sentences about the discoveries and

growth of Oskar’s character during his travels. Stu-

dents stated that they were able to get a better under-

standing of what Oskar’s journey was like by actually

“seeing” the city. Not quite the real thing but no travel

expenses!

In most instances, Seniors are required to confirm their enrollment at the college of their choice by May 1. It is extremely important to send the enrollment deposit by this date, as some schools will move immediately to their waiting lists on May 2, and space will no longer be available. The Guid-ance Office will send final transcripts and proof of graduation to the students’ colleges. Seniors are cautioned to continue to meet their academic responsibilities; colleges have been known to re-scind offers of admission and/or scholarship when a student drops an academic course or the aca-demic performance shows a lack of effort during the final term of high school.

IMPORTANT: Many Seniors have already been offered scholarships. As you receive this good news, please ask your student to bring their award letter into the Guidance Office or compile the list of scholarships with amounts to input in the Naviance scholarship survey. We tabulate the scholarship dollars for the class as a whole, and publish the names of scholarship recipients in the graduation program.

Juniors - Research shows students who take the ACT more than once are more than 50% likely to increase their composite score. Juniors are advised to re-register for the ACT - June 13th (registration deadline May 8). This test will be given at Catholic Central, but registration must be done through the testing company. Registration can be completed online at www.actstudent.org. We are recommending that students opt for the ACT Assessment With Writ-ing the first time they register. Watch your email for ACT Prep opportunities scheduled later this spring.

Also, students may want to register for the SAT I Reasoning Test, and/or the SAT II Subject Tests this Spring. Juniors should talk with their counselors about which tests are appropriate for them. Registration for SAT I & II is available online at www.collegeboard.com .

Juniors and Seniors- Advanced Placement exams will be administered May 4-15. All students who are in AP courses are expected to take the exam(s). The cost per exam is $91 and should have been billed through the Guidance Office; AP exam invoices were mailed to student homes.

Juniors & their parents are encouraged to visit colleges this spring. Most colleges are happy to accommodate weekend visits for prospective students throughout the spring and in the summer. Call or check online with each college to schedule a campus visit through the admissions offices. A campus tour, attending a class along with dining on campus can all be a priceless experience when making an informed decision prior to the application process. Note: The Class of 2016 will be encouraged to start admission applications in September.

Naviance – Parents and students are encouraged to research colleges and careers through your

Family Connection portal. Also, the CCHS Guidance Office posts wonderful opportunities for stu-dents to check out regarding scholarships as well as summer activities. Contact [email protected] or your student’s counselor with questions or login help. Information about standardized test prep sessions offered at Catholic Central will be communi-cated via Naviance next week. Please watch for this in your email. If you have any questions in the meantime, please contact your student’s counselor.

iPad collection procedure for seniors:. Please note, a similar process will take place for under-classmen who have not committed to returning next fall. Many students have been using devices with small physical damages that they have learned to live with, but need to be fixed so that the next user has a reliable device. This includes small screen cracks, damaged corners and device warp. It’s important that these fixes are handled prior to

graduation. The school will hold diplomas for any students with outstanding service or missing equipment. They will be allowed to participate in all graduation activities, but won’t receive their ac-tual diploma until they’ve met all obligations. We’ve created the following simple process to ensure that all devices and equipment are accounted for prior to graduation.

Complete details on prepping devices and other steps seniors need to complete to maintain their digi-

tal footprint will be shared at a later date.

Page 11

DATE: ACTION:

Apr 27 - May 1 Tech support to visit classes / homeroom for a visual review of devices.

Students will be referred to HelpDesk as necessary to arrange for needed re-

pairs.

With this being the final newsletter of the 2014/2015 school year, we couldn’t miss the opportunity to say

thank you to the many parents who have served at least 30 ‘We Care’ events/activities at Catholic Central.

The students, staff, and administration were supported in many ways because of your generosity. Each com-

2015 Senior All Night Party Prayer Request

The Senior All Night Party is fast approaching on May 19th. Details about the evening will be sent out in late April. At this time we are looking for volunteers who will keep the seniors in prayer throughout the evening of their all night party. If interested, please contact Lisa Ziemke at (616) 868-6429 to schedule a time that works for you. Your prayers and your time are much appreci-ated during this special event for the seniors!

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY 2016 CURRENT JUNIOR PARENTS – Planning for the Senior All Night Party 2016 (SANP) began on Tuesday, April 14 at 7 pm in the cafeteria. With this tradition of SANP the seniors are invited to attend an all-night party directly after graduation. It is planned and directed solely by the parents. This is a huge tradition so don’t miss out on the fun. During this meeting you had the opportunity to sign-up to chair one of the many steering committees or sign-up as a committee member. If you were unable to attend but are interested in chairing a committee, please contact Michelle Kane at 554-9679 or [email protected]
