SERIES POINTS & AWARDS 7. The Great American Solo Series (GASS) will be comprised of typically 6 to 8 Solo events per year.

This number will be set before the beginning of the competition season, but may be subject to change due to circumstances beyond the GASS Committee’s control (eg. loss of an event site).

8. GASS Series Points and Championship Awards will be awarded as follows:

DNF .......................................................... = 20 Points, DNS (one day of a two-day event) .......... = 10 Points, DNS (one-day event) or DSQ .................. = 0 Points.

• Competitors who complete at least one timed run on each day of an event will receive a minimum of 20 points.

• Competitors must compete in the number of GASS events indicated in the following table in the same Car Class to qualify for Series Awards. Only one Award will be given to competitors who qualify in more than one Car Class. Competitors' best GASS event finishes will be used to com-pute Series Points in each Car Class based on the table below. The score for each event used for Series Points will be rounded to the nearest whole point. Maximum score for non-winners is 99 points.

Total Number of Events in Series Number of Events to Qualify Number of Events Used 4 2 3 5 3 3 6 3 4 7 3 4 8 3 5 9 3 5

• Class Series Points ties in award positions will be re-solved by using a cumulative normalized ranking based on PAX/RTP Indexed results for each best GASS event finishes. Lowest “P” wins contested position and num-ber of total awards in Class will be adjusted accordingly.

• Series Awards will be distributed in accordance with the current SCCA Solo Rule Book, based on the average number of competitors in each Car Class or the total number of Series-eligible en-trants in each Car Class, whichever provides more awards. Non-eligible competitors finishing in a Series Award position will not be awarded an Award and the award positions for the associated Class will be increased by one if more eligible competitors exist in the Class.

• A “Rookie of the Year” Award will be awarded in accordance with the GASS Points structure. To be eligible, competitors must have never competed in more than two (2) GASS (or predecessor CENDIV Series) events during any competition year. Rookie Points will be awarded beginning with the event at which the competitor declares eligibility. The index shown below will be used to adjust competitors’ times for award of Rookie Points for each event.

2008 PAX/RTP Index Table

9. Series Championship Awards will be presented at an Awards & Dinner Banquet to be held after com-pletion of the GASS competition season. The Banquet time and place will be announced in the GASS Bulletin.

COMPETITORS 10. Competitors may enter each event only once and may not enter an event in more than one Car Class. 11. Competitors must be CenDiv or GLDiv SCCA members prior to the last event they run to earn Series

Awards. 12. The Official GASS Logo Sticker must be displayed in an upright position on both sides of each com-

petitor's vehicle during GASS event competition.

From the Chair…… Welcome to the 2008 Solo Season for the Great American Solo Series! It’s that time of year again – time for the NCAA Basketball Tourna-ment to begin, NASCAR is already underway, yard work needs to be done – and the beginning of our Solo season in the Midwest! As you can tell by the schedule, we still have room for any Region that is interested in hosting a Series event in 2008. Getting approval from site owners seems to be the biggest sticking point for Regions this year. If your Region would like to host an event, please feel free to contact Kent and Crissy Weaver on the Committee and get the information on filling out a bid packet. Both Kent and Crissy will be helpful in an-swering any questions that you may have about hosting an event. The bid packet can also be found on the Series website – soloseries.org. There are a few new people on the committee this year. Kent and Crissy Weaver will be the Liaisons with the Regions; Rich Hughes is the Pointskeeper; Dave Feighner is the keeper of the Schedule for all other events happening in the Midwest – thanks to those folks for help-ing with the rest of us on the Committee to keep this Series going yet another year! The first event is scheduled for Oscoda on May 10-11 with Saginaw Valley Region hosting the event. That information should be available in this Bulletin or on the website soon.

See you in a parking lot. Velma

Note from the Editor…. Happy Springtime!

It’s time to dust off the race car and get ready for the 2008 Solo season. I know, some of you still have snow on the ground, but that should be ending shortly and the first GASS event is just around the corner in Oscoda, Michi-gan! The flyer for their event is located elsewhere in this Bulletin.

Our schedule is short for this season -- four SCCA Regions have agreed to host Divisional level events for the GASS Series for 2008. You won’t want to miss these fine events.

Please help me welcome AXware as one of our Associate Sponsors for 2008. A lot of Regions are using the AXware software. There is information in the-Bulletin on their products.

Again this year, the Great Lakes Division Solo Divisional Championships will be part of the GASS Series and will be the final event of the year for the 2008 Series schedule. We are planning a fun-packed racing weekend which will include the Divisional as the traditional 2-day combined time event, the GASS event being a one-day competition event on Saturday with the GASS Awards Banquet on Saturday evening at the site. You won’t want to miss this event!

Speaking of the GLDIV Solo Divisional Championships -- the 2007 event was named the Solo Divisional of the Year by SCCA. How exciting for the new Division’s inaugural Solo Divisional Championships! A lot of people put forth a lot of work to make this event happen.

TRIPLE PLAY!

In 2007 SVR tried something new; 2 courses in one day with lunch provided by Showcase Mitsubishi between courses. How could we top our 2007 event of the year?

Three courses, combined time in two days! No SVR GASS event would be complete without great food and this year will be no exception. Start off Saturday morning with a Jetta Breakfast provided by Lee’s Automotive. After some great racing on the Saturday am course sit back with your friends and enjoy a ballpark lunch provided by Showcase Mitsubishi. Feighner Baskets will be providing pop for lunch and water throughout the day. After lunch and refreshments the racing resumes on the afternoon course. On Sunday there will be a third course but only one racing session to get you on the road in time to take mom to dinner. This event will have a minimum of 9 runs. If 9+ runs aren’t enough for you, make it a 3 day weekend and attend our Friday Test and Tune. Work a 1-2 hour shift on course and then play all day

The Great Lakes Division Solo Divisional Championships Wins Solo Divisional of the Year

2007 Divisional of the Year was described as not having a huge turn-out, but tons of people stepped up to find ways to make it work. There were numerous door prizes, test and tune opportunities, and a raffle for Hoosier tires. It was well organized to provide its participants with an outstanding experience. Not too bad for a Division's inaugural Solo Championships. Congratu-lations to Great Lakes Division. And what a cool trophy.

“Shempi, Earning the Right to be Called Her Master” By Dave Looman

Due in Bookstores in June The book, "Shempi, Earning the Right to be Called Her Master" is going to the pubisher this weekend.

SYNOPSIS When I was young, I realized that accomplishments required hard work, devotion and passion. This book honors my boy scoutmaster, racing friends and dad who taught me how to fulfill those requirements. These successes are what I call “Earning the Right.”

This book tells the tales of Shempi and me during our travels over many miles and years. The lonely days and nights on the road would never have been possible had it not been for her com-panionship. Her antics and fondness of people were second to none. “Earning the Right to be Called Her Master” is reflected in the many experiences and friends we made.

BIOGRAPHY My wife, Joyce and I live in the quaint village of Alden, Michigan. Alden is on the shores of Torch Lake. I have been an insurance appraiser with Haller Appraisal Service for over 20 years. My job has taken me more than 1.5 million miles over the scenic roads of Michigan, Indiana and Canada. We have had success with our hobby of sports car racing with Sports Car Club of America. Currently, we are involved in the local sports car club, Twin Bay British Car Club. In our spare time, we enjoy gardening, kayaking, nature walks and of course, writing.

The Great American Solo Series (GASS) Region Championship Award Rules

2008 will mark the initial year for the Great American Solo Series (GASS) Region Championship Award; a trophy that is awarded to the Region/Club with the most consistent participation in the GASS Champion-ship. This award has been initiated to help increase attendance at GASS events as well as to encourage Region/Club members to participate in other Region/Club events. The GASS Region Championship Award is not affiliated with the GASS Event Of The Year Award. The following rules govern the GASS Region Championship Award, which will be awarded to a Region/Club each year at the GASS Awards Banquet.

1. The GASS Championship will maintain this trophy as a traveling award of which the winning Region/Club will have possession for the following year.

2. Championship Points will be awarded to each Region/Club based on the number of trophies awarded to Region/Club members during each GASS Championship event.

3. Points for trophies will only be awarded for non-hosting Region/Club members.

4. Regions/Clubs hosting events will receive one Point for each trophy awarded to members of other Regions/Clubs (non-hosting Region/Club) at their event.

5. Only trophies awarded per SCCA trophy distribution guidelines (see current year Solo Rulebook) will be eligible for Championship Points.

6. The GASS Championship Pointskeeper, or designee, will keep the official Region Championship Award Points.

7. Only entrants who are SCCA members will count towards Region Championship Award Points. The Pointskeeper will verify membership via entrant membership numbers submitted by each event-hosting Region/Club along with Official Results. Official Results must include the following before Points accrual will be considered*: • Entrant’s Full Name, USPS Address, and Phone Number, • SCCA Region/Club, SCCA Membership Number, and Expiration Date, • Car Class & Number, Make, Model, and Color, • Results of any Protests, • Raw Times with Penalties for Each Run. *This information will only be used for entrant membership verification, results publishing, and GASS Bulletin mailing list updates.

8. The Pointskeeper may verify membership with the SCCA National Office before awarding Points.

9. The trophy must be returned to the GASS Championship Chairperson by the last GASS event of the season.

10. The GASS Chairperson will have the winning Region’s/Club’s name and year engraved on the trophy and will present it to the winning Region/Club at the GASS Awards Banquet.

11. In case of a tie, the Region/Club with the highest total number of Points awarded from non-hosted events will be deemed the winner. A consolation prize will be awarded to the other Region/Club.

12. Only SCCA Regions/Clubs residing in the Great Lakes and Central Divisions of the SCCA are eligi-ble for this Award.

13. The rules governing this award can be modified by the GASS Committee as necessary.
