Another opening, another show…or something like that! As usual, we opened this brochure and didn’t close it until we were satisfied that it had plenty of thrills and spills to capture your imagination. We’ve paid close attention to the shows you’ve enjoyed and the companies that have entertained you the most and have done all we can to tailor this season to suit your taste. Don’t worry, we still have the odd curve-ball to throw at you. We wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t at least try to stretch your imagination! Our Good Cause Focus this season is a little different this time. Kitchener’s is a great Charity that helps ex-servicemen and women to afford sea-side holidays. The charity has been running for over 95 years and is still supported by a direct descendent of Lord Kitchener. Have a look for our feature on them. The Seagull Rep, our resident company, enjoyed rave reviews with Blackadder Goes Forth and this season sees a return to some Shakespeare. It’ll be a great production with a big cast of our finest talent. Watch out for it, you will love it, I promise. Plus, we have so many other things to look forward to. We’re delighted to be able to welcome Richard Digance to our stage in March. Richard needs no introduction but I’m going to anyway! His own TV series; a BAFTA nomination; a Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers & Songwriters; a Virgin Anthology of Songwriters listing; a world acclaimed poet; and collaborations with Brian May and Elkie Brooks. If that doesn’t impress you, don’t bother coming! We also look forward to launching our new, regular comedy nights hosted by the fabulous Jules Maxine. Jules is a regular on the local circuit as well as London and around the UK. She’s both hilarious and lovely and she’ll make you feel at home. We have youth productions from Dragons Stage School, Acting With Agnes, DPA and the Liverpool Everyman. Stunning drama from Townsend Productions, Stuff Of Dreams, Second Side, Foolhardy and a Jean Paul Satre piece as well as FABBA, Andy The Clown and so much music, you wouldn’t even be able to shake a stick at it (I think that’s commonly called conducting)! So, come and peer behind that magic curtain and you’ll see that theatre is like a wonderland; an amazing place of myth, magic and merriment. I fell in love with theatre as a child and every time I walk through those doors, the sounds of past productions fill my ears, the lights of old shows dazzle my eyes, the classic scripts flood my memories and I’m a child again. Once you step through the looking glass (the one with lights around the edge) there’s no telling where it may lead. Take my hand and hold on tight…

An Evening With

Richard Digance‘A brand of humour, merriment, music and anecdotes of a life well lived’ - Leek Arts Festival 2014

Richard Digance is a rare performer in that he’s respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs. He has survived all trends with his two hour one-man show, an entertainer who many younger comedians, including Ross Noble, claim as one of their major influences.

The Quaysiders presents

The ElephantMan by Bernard PomeranceThe Elephant Man is based on the life of John Merrick, who lived in London during the latter part of the nineteenth century. A horribly deformed young man, who has been a freak attraction in travelling side shows, is found abandoned and helpless and is admitted for observation to Whitechapel, a prestigious London Hospital. Under the care of a famous young doctor, who educates him and introduces him to London society, Merrick changes from a sensational object of pity to the urbane and witty favourite of the aristocracy and literati. But his belief that he can become a man like any other is a dream never to be realized.

The Seagull Rep presents

A Midsummer Night’s Dreamby William Shakespeare

The Seagull Rep presents this classic Shakespearian comedy. You are cordially invited to the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta.

There’s love, forbidden love, unrequited love and “love-in-idleness”! All set in a magical Fairy Woodland, this play within a play has rude mechanicals, a bottom with an ass at the top, kings, queens, dukes, a company of actors so bad that they’re actually quite good (not our Rep, we hasten to add!) and so many twists & turns that, in the end, the whole thing may be “past the wit of man”

Thursday 2nd to Saturday 4th April £7/£6 7.30pm

Huis Clos (No Exit) By Jean Paul-Satre translated by Jeremy BenthamEnter the second empire drawing room and observe our three protagonists as they try to establish why they are here and what it is they have done. Satre’s seminal existential play takes you on a journey through a plethora of human instincts and emotions and manipulations; the play derives Satre’s famous quote “Hell is other people”. An enlightening evening of entertainment and thought is ensured.

The Trowel & Hammer Advert.pdf 1 11/11/2014 14:23:48

The Seagull is an intimate 112 seat theatre in Lowestoft, Suffolk that plays host to a regular stream of local talent, regional and national

touring theatre companies & bands offering a diverse program for all ages and tastes. The Seagull Theatre was originally The Morton Road School until the early 1960s when it was converted to the building that exists today. In 2006 Suffolk County Council withdrew their funding which caused its temporary closure. As a result of this the SOS (‘Save our Seagull’) group was formed, the patrons of which were Oscar-winning Dame Judi Dench and Laurence Olivier Award winning Desmond Barrit. Dame Judi pledged her personal support to the campaigners fighting to save the theatre. The Seagull was saved and reopened in 2007 and has since been renovated. We have now established status as a Community Interest Company and we truly believe we have an important role to play as a dedicated community performing arts centre. We are continually working on community projects in addition to working very closely with local schools. We currently receive no continuous outside funding. We have 3 large studios, office space and a theatre with licensed bar to rent for private functions and we are continually working on improving the building as finances allow. The theatre has its own in-house production company, The Seagull Rep, and is also home to many local companies as well as two theatre schools. The Seagull’s continuing survival is dependent upon its volunteers. We are always looking for new volunteers, so if you’d like to help us either doing something technical, administrative or just want to help make teas, we can always use new people. To find out more, email us at [email protected], call us on (01502) 589726 or like us on Facebook. If you have an email address please join our marketing list to receive up to date information and special offers. If you have already visited the Seagull and enjoyed your experience, we hope you will return and please tell all your friends and family. If you have not, please come and give us a look and see one of the vast variety of shows and events we have on offer. Also, we always welcome new ideas. The Seagull is a community theatre and we need the community to be involved so we can provide events, facilities and services that you, the audience, would like to see.

Many thanks for your support.
