In recent weeks there has been a bit of an uproar in church circles concerning remarks made by Glenn Beck, a TV and radio talk show personality. Several Dayspring folks have asked me to respond to the comments made by Mr. Beck, which were: “I beg you, look for the words ‘social justice’ or ‘economic justice’ on your church website. If you find it, run as fast as you can. Social justice and economic justice are code words for Communism and Nazism. Am I advising people to leave their church? Yes.” I am willing to give Mr. Beck the benefit of the doubt and acknowledge that his words may have been taken out of context or that he misspoke when he compared social justice and economic justice to Communism and Nazism; nevertheless, it is a good opportunity to review the United Methodist emphasis on these issues. The first lines in our Social Principles in the Book of Discipline states: “The United Methodist Church has a long history of concern for social justice. Its members have often taken forthright positions on controversial issues involving Christian principles. Early Methodists expressed their opposition to the slave trade, to smuggling and to the cruel treatment of prisoners.” John Wesley, the “Father of Methodism,” made it one of his priorities to minister to those who were on the fringes of society—the poor, the hungry, the oppressed, taking seriously the teach-ing in Matthew 25 of working with “the least of these” as Jesus us taught us to do. That has been our proud heritage as United Methodists. In fact, that has been such an important facet of United Methodism that I would find it hard to believe that anyone would choose to be a United Methodist who did not want to work for social and economic justice. Dayspring has a proud tradition of working with and for those who are the “hurting” members of our society—our work with UMOM, Family Promise, Habitat for Humanity, Ribbons of Support, our Diversity Committee, our Connections Committee, our Domestic Violence Committee, PFLAG—to name just a very few of the groups we support—show that we take seriously the call of Christ to work for the good of all human kind. That is social and economic justice. It is not a choice for Christians, it is a command. Come to think of it, I believe it also is the American way. Our Pledge of Allegiance states that we are “one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and JUSTICE FOR ALL.” To paraphrase the Christmas song, “Star-Child” that has become quite popular in our churches: “Street child, beat child, no place left to go, hurt child, used child, no one wants to know; this year, this year, let the day arrive when Christmas comes for everyone, everyone alive.” We are called to work for justice and equality for every child of God.

Explorer's Class:

THE ORIGINS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT Through the Eyes of a Modern Biblical

Scholar This four-part series will examine the forma-tion of the New Testament writings from the viewpoint of Bishop John Shelby Spong, a modern biblical scholar and lecturer. His dis-cussions of controversies within the Christian Church are a source for new understanding for progressive and orthodox Christians. This class, led by Dr. Bob Hall, will begin Sunday, April 11, and continue through May 2, at 9:00 a.m. in the Adult Room. The Ex-plorer's Class will not meet on Easter Sunday.

Bible Study Class The class will continue to meet in Room 112 at 9:00 a.m. each Sunday morning and will be facilitated by Josie Teter. The study will be the parables in Matthew, Chapter 13.

Sunday Morning Book Study

Contemporary Issues Class The class will not meet on Easter Sunday. April 11 - How Should We See Jesus

Today? (9 a.m. in the Adult Room) Since our view of the universe today differs signifi-cantly from the three-tiered universe of the first century and how the Gospel Writers viewed Jesus' presence in the world, how should we experience Jesus' presence in our lives now? In what manner does his life and witness guide us? A video-lecture on this topic by a leading progressive Christian theologian will be presented, followed by discussion. April 18 - Gambling via Derivatives This session will address the devastation, caused by a few trading gurus, that has been experienced not only by the financial industry of the U.S. but by the majority of people in our country whose livelihoods have been severely diminished. A Frontline video on this topic will be viewed, followed by discussion on what measures are needed to limit the continuance of such activity. Beginning April 25, the class will discuss for five weeks the topic “Exploring the Future of Christianity.” To understand Western civilization, one has to understand Christianity--and yet for tens of millions of people, Christianity is a religious tradi-tion that is antiquated, perhaps even obsolete or irrelevant to the challenges of the 21st Century. In the “Exploring the Future of Christianity” series, best-selling author, Ken Welber, and Christian con-templative Father Thomas Keeting offer their visions of hope for the future of the world’s largest religion, helping it to fulfill its potential as one of the world’s most powerful paths of human development at a time when it is so badly needed. These luminaries envision the Christian journey in a new way, with radical implications for our spiritual lives and for the world as a whole.

Choir The children will sing the following dates in April: Sunshine Singers at 10:30 on April 25th —— Genesis Choir at 9:00 on April 25th * Sunshine & Genesis Choirs meet in the Media Center 30 minutes prior to the service. May 5th is the last day for choir rehearsals.

Sprouts April 7th the Sprouts will serve at Family Promise. April 28th is the last Sprouts meeting for the year, which will be a year-end party for Sprouts and their family members.

Sunday School May 23rd is our last regular Sunday School class and Summer Sunday School begins June 6th (no Sunday School May 30th). During Summer Sunday School, we will be showing movies every Sunday except July 4th (no Sunday School). We are looking for teachers to help out this summer. Parable of the Talents for Sunday School Our Sunday School children learned about and practiced the "Parable of the Talents." We had 31 children participate and they made a profit of $466.62 to be donated to UMOM New Day Center. As a whole, each child multiplied their money by a factor of 3x!!

Pillow Talk Pillow Talk took place on March 5 and 6 with 40 children participating and many of their parents helping pull it off. The event was a huge success as we explored the Bible and enjoyed Christian fellowship. Please regularly keep the children of Dayspring in your prayers. They are precious and a blessing to our community. Our next Pillow Talk will be held September 10th and 11th.

DAYSPRING FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS

“A celebration of the arts, alive and flourishing in our community”

Beginning Friday afternoon, April 16, and continuing through Saturday evening, April 17, Dayspring will present the inaugural “Dayspring Festival of the Arts.” An opportunity for both Dayspring members and the neighboring communities to experience first-hand the incredible variety and quality of both the visual and perform-ing arts currently thriving in the SE Valley. From an Irish Band to Rachmaninoff; from Jazz to Orff Instruments, Piano, Clarinet and Harp, and everything in between, the fes-tival will feature a wide variety of musical performances as well as several well-known Valley artists, exhibiting everything from oils, to photography, to sculpture. All in all, it promises to be an amazing weekend for all arts lovers and arts supporters everywhere. The festival will also offer several culinary opportunities! Gourmet cinnamon rolls and coffee on Saturday morning; grilled burgers and dogs midday. And opening the event will be a Celebration Dinner on the Patio. Catered by UMOM New Day Catering, the 3-course buffet will feature a carving station, favorite hot and cold dishes, a salad bar, and several sumptuous desserts. Your ticket purchase will not only demonstrate your support of the fine arts, but also aid in the fight to end homelessness through the UMOM New Day Center. Extra special dinner entertainment will be provided by Denise Martin, KJZZ Radio’s “AZ Female Jazz Vocalist of the Year” in 2005. We are thrilled and honored to host Ms. Martin for this very magical evening. The dinner will be followed with a performance by “Cantilena,” a local choir comprised of some of the valley’s finest profession choral singers, under the direction of Dr. Glenn Bennett, as well as the piano artistry of inter-nationally renowned pianists, Eckart Sellheim and Dian Baker. The festival will con-clude on Saturday evening with the Dayspring Chorale’s spring concert at 7:00 p.m., presenting Fauré’s Requiem, for choir, soloists and orchestra. As you can see, it’s going to be a remarkable day and a half of music and magic. UNITED METHODIST WOMEN

United Methodist Women will hold the regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Thursday, April 15, at 7:00 p.m. in the Adult Room. The Call to Prayer and Self-Denial Service will be “Property Makes Mission Possible,” presented by Bev Haubrock. Everyone is welcome to join us for an evening of fellowship and mission support. The Greeting Card Circle, which uses photos, dried flowers, quilt pieces, etc. to artistically recycle greeting cards for sale to support UMW missions, will meet on Thursday morning, April 1st, at 9:30 a.m. in Room 112. Cards are available from circle members. At this time, no donations of used cards are needed. The Connie Reading Circle meets on the 2nd Thursday, April 8th. Cleaning for a Reason If you know any woman currently undergoing chemo, please pass the word to her that there is a cleaning service that provides FREE housecleaning – one time per month for four months while she is in treatment. All she has to do is sign up and have her doctor fax a note confirming the treatment. Cleaning for a Reason will have a participating maid service in her zip code area arrange for the service. http://www.cleaningforareason.org Please pass this information on to bless a woman going through breast cancer treatment. This organization serves the entire USA and currently has 547 partners to help these women. It’s our job to pass the word and let them know that there are people out there who care. A Heartfelt Thank You

I want to thank all of our Dayspring family for showering Bob and me with such an out pouring of prayers, food, flowers, love and support. It was overwhelming to us both. What a caring loving community you are! I am now at home learning to walk with a walker and getting stronger each day. We hope to be back in our pew soon. WELCOME TO NEW DAYSPRING MEMBERS Shannon Buzard and family are a very active UMC family from Seattle. Shannon served as lay leader and was a member of annual Conference in the Pacific Northwest Conference and has also served as secretary of the board of directors for Pacific Northwest Reconciling Ministries Network in the conference. Sons Kevin and Matthew served as ushers and acolytes. Matthew has joined Boy Scout Troop 172 at Dayspring. Shannon is a certified lay speaker and has led worship at a number of churches in Seattle. Craig and Marilyn Carpenter have been married for 41 years and have four sons and four grandchildren. He likes camping, fishing, book clubs and lunch groups. He has been a licensed profes-sional counselor in private practice for 35 years, has a Doctor of Ministry from Drew University, and was ordained in 1980. Marilyn is a dental hygienist with a B.S. from NAU. Her hobbies are friends, stamping and grandchildren. Gino Matteoni is a University of Phoenix graduate with an MBA in Technical Management. He works in corporate safety for ASIG. His hobbies are mountain biking, swimming and dancing. Phoenix is his hometown, and most of his family lives in the valley, including parents, grandparents, aunts and un-cles, of which he has 15. Glenn and Ginny Pargmann married in 2004 combining their families. Ginny has one daugh-ter Stephanie, son-in-law Joe, and four grandchildren. Glenn has a son Robert, daughter Shana, and a granddaughter. Glenn worked for Eastern Airlines for 26 years and retired from Fed Ex after 12 years. Ginny retired from Fed Ex after 19 years. Ginny loves to read, walk and cook. Glenn loves to read and do all sorts of projects around the house. Ginny transfers from First Christian Disciples of Christ and Glenn from the Lutheran Church. Beth Paton is a 25-year-old graphic designer working in advertising. She grew up in Massachu-setts and California but came to Arizona for college eight years ago and just never left. In her spare time she enjoys singing in the Dayspring Chorale. Susan Peters is divorced with two grown daughters and three grandchildren. She is adjunct faculty for SMCC in math and teaches at ASU. She has degrees in math and computer science. She loves reading mysteries, gardening, needlework and traveling. She owns two cats and has spent most of her life in Southern California on the ocean. Peter and Sierra Swales: Pete has an engineering degree from Univ. of Missouri and was born and raised in Greenville, S.C. He is in techni-cal sales for Hubbell Power. Sierra has a psychol-ogy degree from Univ. of Rochester and was born and raised in Canandaigua, NY. She is a first grade teacher in the Creighton School District. Daughter Alexandra was born in February.

Dayspring will be hosting Family Promise, a transitional housing program for homeless families, April 4 - 11. There are many ways to get involved. You could donate a pack n play or clear bins....sign up to help in the kitchen, bring meal supplies, set up, tear down, spend the night, or grab a laundry bag of dirty linens at the end of the week to wash. Thank you, Kay Slaven, for making our laundry bags eco-friendly!!!! If you have a special skill or knowledge you think might be helpful for the families, we would love to have your e-mail address. If a question arises during the week, we would contact you and your expertise. This is a great opportunity for students to get service-learning hours, too!
