HANGAR ECHOES

APRIL, 1978 - BY DICK CAVIN

Locally our big news for Ylarch was the Southwest Regional meeting of Headquarters representatives with chapter officers and designated representa:\;ive·s at the Cibola Inn in .Arlington on the weekend of Narch 10th and 11th.,

The meeting was a success in every way, both educationally and socially. RON SCOTT headed up the delegation from HQ, along ·with BONHIE SOUCY, and ISABELLE WISKE. CHARJ.d:E

. , SCHUCK represented the Washington office of the FAA, and VlDJ WHITE, of Lubbock, represented Region 3 .as a Director.. DAVE :·::!:OI:IAI.J~ of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, another FAA Director, r.0.u.nded -out the ciontingent<-

Chapter officer attendance was excellent and in view of the distance involved it was exceptional. Chapter representatives frorn P.epve'.£, Colorado,; Little Rock, Arkansas; Net,r:-Orleans, Louisiana; '.!'.uli?.<l> Oklahoma; ~sbur:g, Kansas; were registered and Texas was well represented with delegates frou1 S}j--~~ "· c--.:~~:,··;~-- f!J- Paso, Killeen, Austin,· San Antcmio,. Waco~ Sherma11, Beaumont. ]i_ousi~pll,, !forth .Houston, Plainview, Abilene, Amarillo, Dallas, and the host Chapter of Fort vlorth., With the exception of the N:LdlandOdessa, HcAllen, W"ichit.: Falls, San Angelo., Baytmm~ and College Station Chapters, every Texas Chapter ·was represented.

A considerable a.mount of infor:.;,at:Lcn was exchanged between the groups. Althot the President, PAUL POBER.EZi:-JY., could not be present, his daughter BO:NNIE SOUGY (dimples fuidall) gave a good substitute account of' Chapter activities from the HQ standpoint and a President 1s Overview of' long range goals and.future decisions to be made. As most o:f you knm·r~ P.Aut-·and AUDREY were guests of the Australian and Hew Zealand EAA Chapters, returning only a day before our meeting~ Still suffering from Jet Lag, it -;ould have been too much to expect them down here so quickly., His mission 11do1-m under11

w::i.s an unqualified success and we can expect to see considerable modification of some . 9.-f: the most restrictive regulations of the Australian and New Zealand FAA, that hamper ·homebuilders in that part of the world ..

. 111)hether we realize it or not, the 1~ecord of ~..:. in the USA. and our relations with the FAA, have been held up all over the world as a model of reasonable, responsible procedures -&nd regulations drafted in an atmosphere of mutual trust and understanding. The relax ... ation of official restrictions has a 11doraino effect 11 , thus making it easier for the v.:n•ious rule making bodies ·~o justify increased confidence in _the amateur builder. The barriers to private sport flying are coming do1-m, one by one, over the world. i'Jelll know that we 1ve rea,'.1ed the Zenith when a sc :adron of amateur 1:)Uilt Russian and Chinese J'Jttsky Specials and Variezeovik~ arrive en mass at Oshkosh, wonlt we?

Chapter 168 was well represented at Arlington, too~ r_-r.,.;_-'~~ ?:":]'RY, PETE OHLSOJ:J, DICK JOrmson, FRANCIS RICHA.RDSOH> BOB GEREN, BOB CUTLER, PJtY HI\RDY, and HYSELF were there, along with our wives., It 1-1asn 1 t ~11_ business there and the social end of it was enjoyed by one and all., We were agn.in treated to antertainment by the bard of Cedar Rapids, DAVE YEOHAH, and a qui7er full of his original EAA songs set to guitar music •

. You haventt lived until you1ve heard Dave is n;,3.-uminum Love Songll!_ Those of you that made our 1976 Xmas party will woll remember Dave 1 s renditions, Itm sure •

. .. ROfr SCOTT recounted the _detc1ils of a massive ne1-r IIFJ..y-Out 11 program that HQ is champion

POSITIONING BAR TO STRAIGHTEN SHANK

BUCKING BARS

BUCKING BARS ARE USUALLY FABRICATED USING COLD-ROLL (1025) OR CHROllEMOLYBDENliM -(4130) STF.EL BECAUSE IT IS MOST READILY AVAILABLE TO THE AIRCRAFr INDUSTRY. COLD ROLLED STEEL IS IDEAL FOR THE CUSTOM BUILDF.R/ RESTORER OF AIRCRAFr AS IT IS EASILY FOUND IN MOST LOCAL STEEL SALVAGE YAROO. CASE HARDENING OF (1025) HELPS TO INCREASE BAR LONGEVITT WHICH MAY BE LOST WHEN THE UNIT IS RECONDITIONED. CHROME MOLY STEEL BARS ARE IDEAL AS THEY WILL REMAIN USFABLE INDEFINITELY. ALMOST ANY TYPE OF STEEL MAY BE USED IN YOUR FABRICATION OF A BAR FOR USE IN BUCKING ALUMINUM RIVETS. TYPICAL BAR CONFIGURATIONS ARE SHOWN IN THE ILLUSTRATIONS. RF.ADY TO USE BARS IN A VARIEI'Y OF SHAPES AND WEIGin'S ARE AVAILABLE FROM llOST AIRCRAFr SUPPLY' ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS: AIR WORLD, P.O. BOX 160, NEW HYDE PARK, L.I., NEW YORK 11040 AND U.S. INDUSTRIAL TOOL & SUPPLY CO., 13543 AUBURN, DEI'ROIT, MICHIGAN 48223, FREE CATALOGS ARE AVAILABLE ON REQUEST. BUCKING BAR CARE: BAR FACES SHOULD BE KEPI' SMOOTH AND FLAT. ALL FACE Nictfs ANDBURS--SHOULD BE R;;;i.tOVED PRIOR TO USE. oo NOT USE BAR AS A HAMMER. A FILE MAY BE USED FOR LIGHT RESURFACING. IN USE THE FILE MUST BE KEPI' CLEAN TO PREVENT SCRATCHING OF BLOCK. FINISH THE FILED SURFACE WITH MEDIUM-GRADE EMERY CLOTH WRAPPED AROUND THE FILE OR BY DRAWFILING. BE SURE VISE USED IN HOLDING BAR DURING RESURFACING HAS PROTr-:CTIVE JAW GUAROO. A COARSE ENERY DISK SANDER WITH TABLE SEI' AT RIGHT A.'WLES TO DISK MAY BE USED TO REMOVE DEF.P NICKS. ABRASIVE MARKS RESULTING FROM _THIS SMOOTHING OPERATION, IF NOT TOO DEEP, ARE HELPFUL IN BUCKING AND SHOULD NOT BE REMOVED. THE'f ELININATE THE TENDANCT OF THE BAR TO SLIDE AROUND ON THE SHANK OF THE RIVE!'. REMOVE ALL BURRS AND SHARP CORNERS TO PREVENT CUTTING OF YOUR HANDS OR MARKING OF SURROUNDING STRUCTURE. BUCKING BAR USE: SELECT A BAR BY WEIGHT AND SHAPE. FOR 3/32 D. ALUMINUM RIVEI'S - 2-3#, 1/8, 3-4#, 5/32, 3-4.5# & 3/16, 4-5#. FABRICATE SPECIAL SHAPED BARS FOR BUCKING OF RIVErS IN CONFINED AREAS. HOLD BAR AT RIGfil' ANGLES TO THE RIVET SHANK. FAILURE OF BAR TO VIBRATE AT GUN-SEl' SPEED CAN CAUSE RIVET AND MATERIAL TO SINK INTO A DEPRESSION. THIS CONDITION RESULTS FROM UNCOORDINATED BUCKING. TOO LIGin' OR TOO HEAVY BUCKING BARS MAY ALSO CAUSE CONDITION. DF.PRFSSIONS MAW' ALSO BE CAUSED BY THE BU(l(ER BEING LATE, OR THE GUNNER BEING TOO ANXIOUS TO BEGIN. THE BAR SHOULD MOVE BACK AND FORTH AT THE SAME SP1"ED AS THE GUN RIVE!' SEI'. BOTH GUN SEl' AND BAR VIBRATING IN UNISON. COORDINATED AND UNCOORDINATED BUCKING ARE SHOWN IN THE ILLUSTRATION. FLARING AND FLASH-ING OF UPSEl' HFAD ARE CAUSED BY LACK OF VIBRATING ACTION, USE OF TOO HEAVY BAR, OR EXCESS SIDE MOTION OF BAR. 00 NOT BEAR OOWN HEAVILY ON THE SHANK. LEl' WEIGHT OF BAR 00 MOST OF THE WORK. YOUR HANDS llEREL'll' GUIDE BAR AND SUPPLY NECESSARY TENSION AND REBOUND ACTION. USE OF PART OF HAND ON SHF,ET WILL ACT AS A STEADYING ACTION, THE BLOCK MUST MOVE BACK AND FORTH IN A STRAIGin' LINE AND NOT SLIDE AROUND ON THE SHANK END. TO CORRECT A RIVE!' SHANK GOING "CLUB HEAD'' THE BAR IS RAPIDLY MOVED ACROSS THE HEAD WHEN THE GUN IS IN OPFfil.TION. REMmBER - ADJUST AIR RIDULATOR WHICH CONTROLS THE HITTING POWER OF THE RIVEl' GUN Bl' HOLDING THE RIVEI' SET AGAINST A BLOCK OF WOOD WHILE PULLING THE TRIGGER WHICH CONTROLS THE OPERATING TIME. TIME THE GUN TO FORM HEAD IN ONE "BURST" IF POSSIBLE

__ . to Oshkosh and KeryiJ.).e _ fly-ins. an<l -~everal .other long trips and he likeS- i:b-very- much. The back seat is fine :tor chiJ.dren, but would get pretLy'-c:r:ampecLf'or· adults on a long tripo

I flew JIH BEDE~ s //2 BD.:.4 here several years ago and was impressed with its performance, control response, and directional and pitch stability,. Lateral stability was about as e:i>.-pected with the zero· dihedral of the wing" I don t t really care for the castering nose wheel personally, unless there is enough rudder for good directional control doHn to very low for1rard speedo

Still another BD--lt builder in our Chapter is JACK HcDOHALD., Jack is in the process of 1;1oving and his BD:,4 is in an inaccessable· posi-:;ion in his garage, along with the ~-2-?rpio~~)I helicop~,ar that he 1 s building)/ ::o ,;-;e couldntt get a pho00 for this issue. When Jack gets moved we 211 get one for the newslettero Jackis BD-4 is quite modified .. It sits on a conventional t?.il dragger gear and it; has a straight line back on the fuselage:; rather than having the regulaJ." break in the profile of--the fuselage. JACK bought only the fuselage kit f:rom·-BEDE and he plans to b"J.ild an all-metal wing for his bird. There have been seve1"'al BD-•4 builders around the country that have gone the all metal wing route o JACK also is usiri6 m;;:.in gear legs of his mm design and a modii'ied gear boxr. His wings are the extended version, having 12 ftosections on each side of the fuselage., He, too., will use the w:Lng folding feature'-o.f the design. He hasn't bought an engine yet and hasn 1 t done much yet on the interior"

That's understandable, thoi, as he!s spent a lot of time on the §_corpion II helicopter (2 place),, Ho recontly ,-rEr'.l't to the factory in -€:f:Lzoi::i?-, and went thru the first 5 hour phase of their 15 hot:.r chu:}k out p1"0gram~ This .f1.rst 5 hours is to solo in the hover mode.. Thenext 5 hours will dec.l with t:ranslationa.l maneuvers in forward flite., _/lJ..lof' ·iihis is part of-their t:packagE!_n that goes with their kit,, Their program is 6::,pensive by s0ms etandards..? but without a doubt it!s the only scmcible ·way to go. I can 1t co11ceive o:f anything 2.ny mora :frigh"i:;ening than someone t::i.-ying to teach themselves to fly a helicopter¢ A gyrocopter, yds, but a helicopter, noo

'Ihe fi:-st BD-4 builder in Chapter 168 was GEORGE Bl\RTOH, who flew his several years ago,. G:::::Jrge is one of those real E\A types that built nearly every part of his airplane., He. c-•;2;1 -:Jade his O"Wn vary prof'essional lookin;:; molds to mold his mm fiberglass wing parts,, Gc~''.Y.l.~ge had to give up flying ·when he hurt his arm in an auto accident and he sold his BD~.1-1- to RAY FOWLER. here in Dallaso RAY isn!t a Chap'Ger member now, but maybe we can f;Gt hi1~\ back in this year" GEORGE also took on the building of a Scorpion II after finishing the BD-1~ and he also still has a sin·_ "Le place tethered. lilchopper in his back ya~ed that 11flie~1 a fcot h1gh on a Co:;."Vairsngi;.130

The other BD-4 projc--:t in Cl.:apter 168 is th(·'; of AL Bti.U.HlU'T" Alts p: Jject is also buried under various and assortsd household stuff in his ga7'.'age and wa couldn't get a picture · ::f it either., ALt s work 2s an rn1.gineer takeG him to Sigg_g_Eore from time to time, so he gets pretty far behind thi:1ss ati home that eats u.~0 his time off and so the airplane has 'to take a lower prio~~ity in that case~
