  • Have you ever experienced a spiritual encounter so pow-erful that you felt a fire had been lit inside you? The cele-bration of Easter is a most moving experience to lead you there. A part of the Easter story (Luke 24) can refresh any-one whose hopes and dreams have been dashed by trage-dy. Foiled expectations can be so consuming that you live by staring at the ground. The Easter story provides hope for lives like that. Two friends have had their world come to an end. They had trusted in one whom they believed was to be their Messiah and the hope of their nation. They had witnessed their supposed Messiah dying at the hands of Roman ex-ecutioners. Though he had performed amazing miracles in life, he died like an ordinary man and was now buried in a borrowed tomb. The friends were on their way home to Emmaus facing an uncertain future. As they walked, they talked of the disastrous weekend and its meaning for their future. Suddenly, a stranger joined them in their walk. Their sorrow was so deep that they didnt even raise their heads to look at the man. He then began to give them a history lesson of the one who had died. He suggested that all was according to a plan. This must have been a strange and dif-ficult talk for the two. They completed their 7 mile journey and arrived at their home. Since it was nearing nightfall, they invited the stranger to stay with them. Their world was about to change again. The stranger took charge of the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to them. At that point, their eyes were opened as they likely saw wounds in his hands and his head for the first time. They

then recalled the sensation they had felt when the stranger joined them on their journey, did not our hearts burn with-in us while he talked with us on the way, and opened to us the scriptures?. Then, the stranger disappeared, and the two ran back to Jerusalem with an abundant sense of en-ergy. They burst into the hiding place of the disciples and shouted, the One who was crucified is alive! We knew Him in the breaking of the bread the Messiah lives!. Over the next forty days, Jesus appeared to all his disciples as well as hundreds of other people. The prophecies have come true! Whatever disappointments you may have experienced in life, God has a gift of hope for you. We encourage you to do a fresh reading of the history of Jesus in Luke 23 & 24. A following talk with God can cause a heart transformation. A first read of other great books such as The Case for Easter by Lee Strobel, or Know Why you Believe by Paul Little, or the booklet Knowing Jesus Personally can lead you to a transformed life. Most importantly, your personal experi-ence with Jesus will set your heart on fire. Your heart can be warmed by acknowledging the reality of Jesus, learning the Biblical record of his life, death, and resurrection and asking Him to be Lord of your life. Like the Emmaus duo, you may discover a heart aflame with hope and life!

  • I had to hand in this article Im writing and I had only about four hours to submit it. I figured it was probably time for me to figure out what the theme is so I went looking for one of the Admin Assistants to ask her about it. I couldnt find her; however I did find one of our volunteers here at MGA. We began to talk, and like most of the conversations Ive been hav-ing these days with people, I told her all of my mixed feelings that are happening with me moving. Now heres the thing, Im awful at taking advice, like you can tell me something and Ill listen, however I will probably walk away and change nothing about myself. Its a pride thing, Im working on it. So this lady who I was talking to, well I tell her about how when I go to a new place Im a bit reserved and not incredibly social. Then suddenly half a year rolls around and Im my full self; some would say Im alive again. I dont want this when I move though, I want to go to the place Im going and be who I am, my full, strange, a bit awkward self right away. It was not a fun time having to hold back when I first came here, I just wanted to be me, but I couldnt. So really I didnt get any life altering knowledge from this lady I was talking to but she did talk to me, she talked about life, and about her son, and about how I shouldnt be scared to be the person I am. She talked about a lot, and although I cant really fully explain what she said because I just took bits and pieces of it, I can tell you this; its not worth holding back who you really are. Its not worth it at all to be a little bit dead inside because you are scared what people might think. It is worth it to be who you are though! Sure people will see your flaws then, but you have them anyways so you may as well let people know! Your friends will figure them out soon enough, so just drop them all on them at once, itll be fun! Then when you do that, and stop pretending to be someone you arent, you can start to feel alive again.

    LIFE Its About Being Me

    ISAAC BARTERvideo producer

  • I was raised in a Christian family and knew of God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. As I finished my teen years I discovered other things in this carnal world and was to busy for God.

I was a long distance trucker for over thirty years, Ive driven over 8 million kilometers. I have seen all the great sites of North Ameri-ca, been to the Atlantic, the Pacific, across the Rio Grande and over the ice roads of the north. I loved what I was doing, it made me feel alive. I did it my way.

I have two sons with my first wife and am proud of both of them. We were divorced because I was never home.

I had a successful business and all was well, I thought. I was alive in the secular world with money, success and influence and wanted only to live, love, laugh and be happy. I met Lori, my wife, in 1996 and she started to lead me back to Jesus. I encountered serious medical problems in 1997 and life went sour. I lost my will to be active, I lost my business; I honestly didnt care, and I just wanted to dedicate myself to living. I have undergone four serious operations since. They found a tumor on my pituatary gland that grew and took 90% of my vision. I was depressed, at times almost suicidal. How could this happen to me?

I blamed God for my loss and my mentor pointed out that God doesnt work that way. I started listening to the bible and rose out of the depression.

My mentor took the time to show me the truths in the bible and I grasped them tightly. Now, instead of being blind, I had some vision, I could see enough to be involved. I became active in our church, took bible study courses and drew closer to God.God had a plan for this visually challenged man, all I had to do was go along for the ride.

What a ride it has been! Lori and I moved to Fort McMurray in 2006, she works at Syncrude and I found employment teaching safety courses. The business that employed me closed in 2010 and I had little to do.

One Sunday morning, at church, I met a pastor that looked at me and said youre here for a reason, think about it. Two weeks later we met again at the church, looked at each other and both said telephone ministry. Thus started the MGA telephone ministry, which has lead to involvment with compassionate care, youth and hosting on Sundays. I am having fun and enjoy it all. In addition I am attenting Alberta Cible college, online.

Alive again - I sure am. I love my involvement in the church. I, once again, have a positive mental attitude and it is all God. I am his and ask him regularly to use me as he sees fit.

  • On the 26th day of June 1968 I said the sinners prayer while in the basement of the Brethren Bible Chapel after sweating my guts out playing floor hockey and listening to a talk about citizenship by a local scout master. After months of attending this troupe and staying around to talk to this leader, who seemed to have no agenda other than to listen to an eight year old boy talk; I decided to act on the information he gave me and call upon the name of the Lord and be saved. His name was Bill Hean, and I will never forget that man.

William Arthur Ward said Flatter me and I may not believe you. Criticize me and I may not like you. Ignore me and I may not forgive you. Encourage me and I will not forget you!

In a world where youth are crying for loving adult relationships and where the average father spends less than 5 minutes a day of undivided attention on his children, there is an opportuni-ty, like never before, to make a difference in the lives of young people. Josh McDowell said youth spell love T-I-M-E.

We have many such opportunities here with the youth ministries of MGA. One needs not be a great theologian or a learned scholar, but someone with a genuine desire to spend some time with youth. Whether it is the Wednesday night Base for grade 7 & 8s or the weekly bible study for grades 9-12 we need caring adults to volunteer who will commit to our young men and women. By commitment I do not mean you are signing up for life, although you may want to after spending 6 months with these amazing kids, but rather a consistent presence in their lives. I dont mean people who come with a lecture or a bunch of rules on how to live their life, but someone who will earn the right to be heard by building a relationship with them which will gain trust. Soon they will be asking you for information and wisdom to help them in their daily lives.

Are you available to spend some of your well deserved time off serving our youth? Can you be consistent with your commitment even if it is only two times a month? If the answer is yes, than we need you and I guarantee, you will be as blessed as the youth are as you inspire and get inspired by these great young people.

Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

APRIL 3RD @ 10:30AM FAMILY CHRISTIAN CENTRE (160 DICKINS DR.)

  • Throughout my 20s I struggled with alcohol and drug addiction. It had taken over my life and I started hav-ing panic attacks. I drank to over-come the panic which only caused more panic attacks. In April 2009 I lapsed into a coma after a night of partying (mixing al-cohol with cocaine and prescription drugs). When my family could not reach me for two days, my mother found me in my apartment sitting upright on my sofa. She thought I was just drunk and passed out but when she realized something more was wrong she called 911. At the hospital, my family was es-corted to the family room and the doctor came and told my mom, my stepfather and my brother that I was in a coma in a vegetative state and would likely not live. The doctors assumed that I overdosed because of my history of drug and alcohol abuse. The tests indicated however, that there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol in my system. Doctors estimated that I had likely been in a coma for close to 30 hours. If my mom had waited any longer to check on me I would not be here today to tell you my story. Health Science Center did tests, in-cluding an MRI which showed seri-ous brain injury and if I did survive the coma I would remain vegetated. My sight, hearing, speech, memory, and mobility would all be seriously affected. The ICU doctors asked my family on three separate occasions to disconnect life-support and let me die. They refused to disconnect life support or let me starve to death. On July 3, 2009 at approximately 4pm I woke from my coma, swearing at my sister. The family came right down to the hospital. I knew everybody by sight and could say everyones names. Although my mind seemed to work fine my speech was very soft and I was always out of breath and

I quickly realized that my mobility was seriously affected. From then on I was known as my familys mira-cle child Kevin 2.0.After 8 weeks, I was transferred to the TLC program at 1010 Sinclair Street where I have my own apart-ment with round-the-clock staff. Through hard work and determi-nation I have persevered and now I can toilet myself, feed myself and help with my daily activities. Im in a wheelchair full-time but can take approximately 30 steps with two people assisting, but I know that someday I will walk again. My progress to date is due in large part because of my family; my brother Kelly; my sister Kim and her family; my dad and my step-dad; my cous-in Kirk and Aunty Florence; but es-pecially my rock - my mother. My goals are simple; I want to learn to walk again unassisted, get a Uni-versity degree, live independent-ly again and become a successful person working at helping to keep others from falling into the same path that I took.

    KEVIN LINKLATER

Kevin lived in Fort McMurray for almost 5 years. His Dad, Cleo Linklater lives here and attends MGA church. Prayers kept their faith strong and this incident made the family closer. They are thank-ful for making the right decision not to disconnect the life support system.

  • OthersFORGIVEAs IME

    FATHER PLEASE

FORGIVEThere has been a battle raging for a very long time in the history of mankind. The war is between truth and lies, good and evil, right and wrong, virtue versus wickedness. In the end when everything is all said and done, God who is true, righteous, and good will stand undefeated along with all those who did what He asked.

God had certainly been faithful to me through the years. Since I had come from a broken home with much emotional and physical turbulence, I had many painful memories and deep offenses brewing in my heart and in my soul. The extra pressure from marriage and children was causing the buried unresolved hatred to come to the surface. I had also developed some very serious health prob-lems that I was trying to manage on my own. Whenever my anger flared, my health took a nose dive and it would take me weeks to recover fully. I was a mess.

One day everything changed. A close friend of ours was aware of my health problems and he had been praying for me with a group of prophetic intercessors. Our friend asked me when my health problems started and immediately I had clear memories of offenses and hurts that had taken place 23 years previous! Right then and there I began having dramatic emotional and physical responses which left me sobbing in a heap on the floor. I was advised to forgive the people that I had just recalled. As I began reciting a forgiveness prayer, I had a very distinct thought that suggested that I should not only forgive but also bless these same people. I was very specific. I asked the Lord to bless those individuals with salvation, freedom, joy, peace, healthy relationships, successful lives, forgiveness and more. I continued to do this until a deep peace came over me from the inside out and from head to toe. I was astonished at what had just happened and suddenly realized that I had just been completely, healed from a condition that had continuously worsened over the last two decades! I had just won the first of many spiritual battles that would be fought against the forces of evil. All I had to do was fight with Gods weapons. Life was beginning to look amazing!

Mathew 6:14 says, But if you do not forgive men their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Mathew 18:32-35 says, You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. Should you not also have had com-passion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you? And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him. So my heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses.

Offenses will come but it is the Lord who will repay the guilty for what they have done.

  • C.S. Lewis is best known for The Chronicles of Narnia, a series of seven novels published from 1950-1956. Parts of the series have been popularized by the movie versions of 2005-2010, which have grossed more than $1.5 billion in worldwide sales. Surprised by Joy is the autobiography of this fascinating man written over a period of seven years and published in 1955.

Lewis was a brilliant thinker, writer, novelist, poet, broadcaster, and lecturer. He held academic positions at both Oxford and Cam-bridge Universities. Following a charming description of his childhood in Belfast, Lewis describes his spiritual journey from childhood faith, to atheism, to theism, to Christianity.

In reviewing his years of atheism, he remarks, really, a young Atheist cannot guard his faith too carefully. For the first time I examined myself with a seriously practical purpose. And there I found what appalled me; a zoo of lusts, a bedlam of ambitions, a nursery of fears, a harem of fondled hatreds. My name was legion.

His association with Christian writers such as J.R.R. Tolkien (The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings) challenged his premise for atheism as described in his words, in the Trinity Term of 1929 I gave in, and admitted that God was God, and knelt and prayed: perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England. In 1931, he took a further step of faith in Christ to become one of the most formidable Christians of the Isles.

The Times Literary Supplement, in its review of Surprised by Joy (1995) said, the tension of these final chapters holds the interest like the close of a thriller. Nor is this lessened by the fact that the spiritual experiences here recorded follow intellectually, at least no common pattern. Few other Christians can have been convinced by just such strategy; few ever could be. God moves, indeed, in a mysterious way, and this book gives a brilliant account of one of the oddest and most decisive end-games He has ever played. Lewis passed away on November 22, 1963, just shy of his 65th birthday. Since this was the same day as the death of Aldous Huxley (Brave new World) and the assassination of President Kennedy, Lewis passing and funeral received little attention.

    -Glen Forsberg

  • Have you ever found yourself acting like the apostle Peter, in that you wished you could take back something you said in haste; or have another opportunity to speak up in matters that were important but controversial? I certainly have and have regretted allowing my voice to be the instrument of an untrained spirit instead of that of a Spirit controlled man, when I impulsively speak up and the fruit of my lips is not always giving glory to the one who created me for worship.

In the book, The Practice of Praise, Spurgeon explores many of the Psalms and reviews the Life of David and the philosophy of abun-dant praise. He discusses why we should praise the Lord, how to praise the Lord, what to praise the Lord for, when to praise the Lord and different methods of praise. Spurgeon also discusses how to apply praise to practical purposes, increase your daily praise, and establish the habit of praise in your life. The book also reveals the secret of continual praise and how to develop conversation that prais-es God.

The pocket book has only six chapters and 170 pages, but it is full of scripture verses, ancient wisdom and practical instruction for those who are serious about learning to control their tongues in a way that will show forth the Fathers loving kindness and his faithfulness. Psalm 92:2.

Personally I have tried to practice the following prayer written by Mark Buchannan in his book, Your God is Too Safe, when it comes to glorifying the Lord with my words. Lord help me to be silent when for selfish reasons I would rather speak and help me speak up when for selfish reasons I would rather stay silent.

  • While no one disputes that Jesus great commission or mission to the church as described in Matthew 28:16 is a call for the church

to go into the entire world and make disciples of all nations, it would also be worthwhile to stop and think about how he intended us to do it. Jesus does, after all, call us to become and make disciples of His way of life, but what was His method of making disciples? He was a master preacher and story teller and he operated in every gift of the Spirit. He was anointed and given the Spirit with-

out measure, yet Jesus, the master discipler, only committed himself to a small number of close friends, the twelve, whom he calls his disciples. The

scriptures tell us that he withdrew from the crowds to share with his disci-ples the Secrets of the Kingdom. Jesus, the master discipler, models disci-

pleship for us through relationship by spending approximately three years in close community with his disciples, eating, sleeping and living openly before

them in community together. He was not just teaching his disciples what it meant to be sons of God, He was the living example for them of what commu-

nity and kingdom life was to look like. Every part of life had to be re-ordered in this new kingdom; attitudes towards marriage, money, love, hate, service, friendship

and spiritual warfare. Everything was on the table and the situations encountered tended to reveal individuals strengths and weaknesses, sometimes for everyone else

to see and even discuss. Jesus doesnt appear to hold much back. In the disciples we see ourselves; selsh, proud, arrogant and weak, yet still in community and still with

Jesus. Often, we see the disciples eating, walking, rowing, shing, praying and breaking bread together. Through all of this Jesus held them together and lived out for them what

it meant to be His disciple, to the point that after three years he could say he no longer called them servants but friends.

After Jesus ascension, in Acts 2, we see the disciples, now apostles, (sent ones) meeting together with the new converts and making them disciples of Jesus in the same way. In Acts

2:42 we see the new believers devoting themselves to the apostles teaching, (the gospel of the kingdom), the fellowship, the breaking of bread and to prayer. They shared their stu so

that no one was needy; they broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts. Jesus is still calling to us to be in his community and in the same way learning from Him,

together, openly and honestly struggling to discover what it really means to seek rst His King-dom and His way of righteousness. Chapter 2 concludes with these powerful words: And the

Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. We can see from this and many other passages throughout New Testament that a normal part

of church life and commitment to the Lord Jesus and each other was to meet in each others homes. As they did this the Lord was in their midst adding to them all who would be saved. Through these

small groups the Lord Jesus worked in powerful ways through the believers lives to bring His life to those who met in His name. Jesus still does this today. Even in Fort McMurray, community is still the

way of discipleship and the way the Lord Jesus will bring about His kingdom and revival. I pray you will nd one of the many opportunities to be involved in community at MGA.
