“I may walk through valleys as dark as death but I won’t be afraid. You are with me, and your shepherd’s rod makes me

feel safe.”

Psalm 23:4

I n s i d eI n s i d e

As many of you may have noticed, the

economy hasn’t been doing so well as

it used to in the last few years. Busi-

nesses are closing due to bankruptcy

while others are trying to come out with

the cheapest deals so that they can stay

afloat. Some have been able to keep

their prices high while still competing with

lower prices.

The unemployed rate is still rising,

from 5.8% in 2008, to its current place

at 9.7%

In regards to the employment rate and

recession, Mr. Rusty Gaudard, the AP

Microeconomics teacher, said, "I believe

we are coming back from an abyss.

The economic climate a year or so ago

was scary to say the least. Some of the

nation's top firms were collapsing as if

years of work and the thousands of indi-

viduals who worked for those firms were

but ruins among the chaos. The news

was filled with stories of people losing

their jobs or impacted by the fallout."

This recession is causing unwanted

stress to those who pay their own ex-

penses. If your parents are strict about

giving you spending money or you are

forced to have a job because you are

on your own, you might have realized

how difficult the job market is for young

adults.

Many businesses are not hiring, or

that they are trying to keep the smallest

amount of employees on because that

is all that they can afford. Those who are

hiring are looking for the employee with

the appropriate amount of experience

for the job.

There are even cases where an

employee will be turned down for the

job because they are over-experienced.

The reasoning for this is because the

business has the worry of losing that

employee to a new job that could come

into their view.

I have listed a lot of the problems that

we are faced with, and now you probably

want to know what you can do about

them.

The most important thing that you can

do is wait and stay calm. Things are not

going to change overnight, and if you

expected that then you are in for a lot of

frustration.

Be careful with what you spend your

money on, or even what products you in-

vest in. For those of you who are buying

cars, watch out for what companies you

make your purchase with.

As most of you know many automotive

companies are going under and many

are being faced with bankruptcy.

The main piece of advice I can impart

with you is to spend your money smartly

because there is no way of knowing

what the economy situation will be like in

the future.

As a private Christian high school, our dress code should not and will not be the same as that of a public school. The truth is there is no acceptability for dressing disre-spectful and as public schools show, if there are not rules students will dress inappropri-ately.

Changes can be made giving students more leeway, but even after these changes are made, would students still want more? At what point does the dress code please everybody? Obviously it has changed over the years. There is no longer a uniform and students can wear any type of sweatshirt and any style of collard shirt, yet students want more. We believe the changes proposed such as being able to wear plain colored T-shirts.

The biggest reason we believe the dress code is how it is, is because VCHS should portray a positive and classy image, a big part of that is how we all dress. Its not a matter of holding us back from being ourselves and showing our individuality, its more a matter of respect and honor.

The best things in life come when we least expect them to. That is what happened in The Last Song, the latest novel by Nicholas Sparks.

Veronica (Ronnie) Miller, played by Miley Cyrus, is a teenager, who appears Goth on the outside but is sensitive on the inside.

She is sent from the hustle and bustle of New York City to live with her father in a small Southern beach town. That is the last place she would want to be for her summer.

The father, played by Greg Kinnear, tries to reconnect with his daughter through the only thing in common--music–but Veronica would rather be in the big city than a southern town. But she finds herself having more fun than she expected to have.

Ronnie has been forced to go to a small Southern town for the summer to live with her brother and father. She is very upset that she has to spend her time with him, because after her father and mother divorced she started to hate him.

She finds herself wanting nothing to do with him until she meets William Blakelee, played by Liam Hemsworth.

When they first meet Ronnie could care less about a tall, blond, beach volleyball player but they somehow still run into each other.

Last Song: the Story of a Summer RomanceShe wanted nothing to do with him, but before she knows it she's his girlfriend and they spend all their time together.

As the summer goes on she finds herself changing, for the better. But during this change, her father has been keeping a secret from her and her brother.

He has had cancer but didn't want to tell them because he didn't want them to worry about him.

Towards the end of the summer Ronnie decides to stay on to help take care of him.

Many students (the girls of VCHS) are excited to see this movie.

Falynn Martinez said, "I'm very excited because I love those types of movies. I'm a romantic."

But on the other hand, some students aren't so excited.

"I do not like Miley Cyrus, no offense," said Sara Erb.

Overall this movie is good, and is a good movie to see with friends so there will be a shoulder to cry on. The acting was done well and you could tell that the actors and actress-es didn't just treat it as acting, but that they wanted to tell a story with their acting. Cyrus does a song that is featured in the movie and is on the Last Song album.

This movie came out on March 31st and I would definitely recommend this movie to all the girls out there looking for a good romance story.

Dealing With Dress Code High School Relationships

Most high school students have a lot to deal with, with academics and sports teams, and even relationships. Sustaining a healthy relationship is not always easy. Difficulties such as jealousy and security often create problems. Knowing how to treat your boy-friend or girlfriend is a problem that I believe a lot of teens have. High school relationships are based on trust, and if you don’t trust your boyfriend or girlfriend then the relationship has no chance.

Being taken is not a title; it should be more of an honor, something to be respected. Many guys find themselves caught in a mo-ment in which they say things to another girl in which they later wish they hadn’t.

The problem with this is how fast this miss-occurrence will spread around and get back to this guys girlfriend, A.K.A DRAMA. It can be heart breaking for a girl or even guy when they feel they can trust their boyfriend or girlfriend and something like this happens.

The crazy part about it is... it happens all the time. High school relationships often last fewer than 3 months. It is very rare for a couple to stay together for a year, and almost never two or three, the reason for this is bore-dom. Its hard to think about but often times a girl or guy will get too used to the one they are with and lose the “spark”, or the feeling they used to have when they first met.

One thing leads to another and before you know it, the so called “boyfriend” that you trust is texting another girl while on the phone with another while facebooking another.

The truth is, its hard to trust your boy-friend or girlfriend and in most cases there is a reason why. The problem is not the individu-als character, it is more so the positions in which they are put in every single day.

Guys and girls alike are faced with the temptations of the opposite sex everyday at school, now i am not talking about anything other than a simple thought of temptation. High school relationships are not usually successful because the individuals who call themselves a couple often don’t understand the meaning of being taken, and staying true.

“I’m excited to be here to assist students in discovering their gifts, talents and discovering who they are,” said Mr. Espino.

Mr. Espino is the new Bible 11 teacher and college counselor for the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year.

He is a graduate of Liberty University, where he taught 11 years ago. He also taught Sunday school and he has been involved with Vacaville Christian through the Buisness Partners program. He was inspired by his college counselor at Vacaville High School, Mr. Gardner.

He grew up with the dream of being a football star or an actor. “I wanted to be a movie star,” said Mr. Espino.

Mr. Espino said, “I want [the students] to know Christ and to make him known. I want them to have a passion and to know God’s word. I want them to go to church!”

He has been married to Carole Espino for 17 years this June and has been blessed with 3 boys: Clayton, 12; Emmet, 8; and Blake, 6.

"A dessert is a thing of greatness. When you eat them you feel all warm inside and become one with the dessert, said William DiFrancesco.

A dessert is an easy way to spice up a dinner, special occasion, or just for a tasty snack. Amongst these are tasty cakes, mouthwatering pies, luscious milkshakes, cooling ice cream, and delicious brownies.

"The taste of brown-ies is like a piece of heaven in your mouth. Every time I have one I wanna cry," said DiFran-cesco.

Recently, high school students were polled for their favorite dessert. The top three: cake came in first, followed by brown-ies, and then ice cream. The dessert "Pazookie,"

"I just love teaching young people because they are learning about God in this world. I truly believe in the statement, 'Our children are the national treasure of our

nation and we must pour out our knowledge and wisdom to them,” said Mr. Wirth.

Mr. Wirth is the new Bible 9 teacher for the remainder of the 2009-2010 school year.

He grew up with the dream of wanting to be involved in under-water construction. That changed when his principal at Berean Chris-tian High School in Walnut Creek, Dr. Sostrum, began influenced him. He started wanting to teach.

He has been teaching since 1995 and this is his fourth year in-volved with VCS. He used to teach at Tabernacle.

Mr. Wirth said, "I have kept Jesus centered in my life, I con-

sider that a great accomplishment." His main goal of teaching the 9th graders is to show them that Jesus is real and he can make a difference in your life, it just takes effort. "he hardest part [of teaching 9th graders] is that our society was not taught how to be respect-ful in difficult conversations, so there is more judgment in the atmosphere."

Mr. Wirth is blessed with four children. Three of them attend VCS: Luke is in pre-school; Caleb is in early kindergarten; and Jack is in the 8th grade.

Look Inside Their Lives

Sometimes the greatest pen pal of all can be God. Directed and produced by David Nixon, Letters to God opened up in selected theaters on April 9.

Inspired by a true story, it stars Tanner Maguire as 8-year-old Tyler Doherty, a boy who is struggling against cancer. He writes his daily prayers as letters and mails them to God. Since they have no real address, all the letters end up in the hands of the lost post-man Brady McDaniels (Jeffrey S.S. Johnson), a man who has just been assigned to deliver mail on Tyler’s street.

After an accident where Tyler throws up on Brady’s shoes, the two become friends as Brady slowly starts to find himself again and get over his alcohol addiction. The following events show how Tyler was able to change his friends, family, and community through his faith, even though cancer was slowly taking his life away.

Letterstogod.com says, “A heartfelt tale of inspiration, hope and redemption, Letters to God is the story of what happens when one boy’s walk of faith crosses paths with one man’s search for meaning--the resulting transformational journey touches the lives of everyone around them.”

After already seeing David Nixon’s Fireproof, I couldn’t wait to see how his latest movie, Letters to God, turned out. I was hop-ing that the movie would live up to its descrip-tion, and it sure did.

The acting was so realistic, as if you were merely peering through a window watching the events unfold in real life. As you watch the movie, you can’t help but wonder what the end result will truly be. Will Tyler die from can-cer, or will he be able to survive through faith?

One of my most favorite parts in the movie was when the producers showed sto-ries from members of the crew who had been through cancer at the end during the credits. It was amazing to read what they had been through, and it was a really great thing to add to the end of the movie.

Most definitely an inspirational movie, Letters to God is a movie I would most defi-nitely recommend to anyone and everyone. It certainly is a must see, and it’s so good that you could even see it again for a second time!

Letters to God is rated PG for thematic material and runs for one hour and fifty three minutes.

found at the restaurant BJ's, was also very popular.

Among the less popular desserts were some exotic dishes like pizza, jell-o, pernik (Czech gingerbread) and dog. Ricky Torres was one of several freshmen that were surprised of the results. Torres said, "I am surprised because brownies is wassup!"

Having a balanced diet is also important in order to stay healthy. Modern desserts can have huge amounts of sugar and carbohy-drates that, if left unchecked, can lead to

heart disease and plenty of other medical conditions.

Marnika Gates said, "After eating desserts I like to eat carrots to balance out my diet."

A popular choice of brownie mix is Ghirardelli Double Chocolate Brownie mix. It has an average price of about four dollars and only requires an egg, some oil and water.

Sadie’s Over

Girls asking the guys flips the whole idea around for a dance. It's called a Sadie Hawkins. April 16, 2010 one of these dances was held for VCHS. From 7:00pm to 11:00pm students danced and partied, leaving an empty gym with $7-$10 gone from their wal-lets. Snacks and soda were provided: M&M's, Starburst, pretzels, Cheetos, and more. DJ's set up the sound systems and around 7:15 people started pouring in, being fashionably late, But there wasn't a lot of dancing in the first hour.

People stood still, and talked in circles, until the song "This is how we do it" by Montel Jordan started to play, which sparked the dancing. Yet, the dancing was getting a little too much for the chaperones. Mrs. Fogh, Mrs. Golden, Mrs. Stitt, Mr. Powell, Mr. Wirth, and Mr. Rowland, broke up the dancing numerous times.

At 10:30pm the DJ, Anakin Ueng, and Kyle Isom had a dance-off, but the crowd seemed to favor the DJ's Slick moves than Ueng, and Isom's skills. At 11:00pm, the dance came to an end, leaving some unsatis-fied, and ready for more, but leaving others out of breath, and ready for a long night’s rest.

Sound effects and crazy voices are all you need to create a radio play, oh and do not forget the sounds of a jazz band!

On the night of Monday, April 12, the VCHS radio class, lead by Mr. Ralph Martin, took part in a radio production that could take the audience to a parallel universe and back without leaving the Vacaville Performing Arts

Juniors and seniors get ready! The junior senior banquet is on Friday, May 28. Begin-ning at 7:30pm and ending at 11:30pm, this event will be held at the Rancho Solano golf course in Fairfield.

Erin Davenport said, "The purpose behind junior-senior is for the juniors to host a goodbye party for the seniors and to allow a fun time for just upperclassmen to be able to have fun."

According to Davenport, the party will

Students Prepare for Jr./Sr.most likely be Vegas themed. There will be dancing, lots of games, and a ton of activities throughout the night.

Alexandria Martinez attended the junior senior banquet last year and said it was really fun. "Good music," Martinez said.

Scoot Goodrich said, "I expect it to be great with a lot of love flowing through the air."

"Guaranteed to be a fun and free event for seniors before they graduate," Davenport said.

This event is only for the junior and senior class; it is a semiformal event.

Theater. The play was called Unit X-7. Though en-

tertaining, radio production plays are not what one might expect. Rather than rely on actors who perform through actions, radio produc-tions use sound to paint a picture in the mind of the audience. And the sound effects are made by everything from electrolizer to a cup of water being blown into through a straw.

The class performed the show live on the radio, on our very own VCHS radio station.

Erin Davenport, the only girl on the Golf team, has been playing competitive golf since she was a freshman in high school, but she first started playing at the young age of 7.

The first time she went on a course was not because she wanted to. It was because her parents told her that if she went with and played a round with them, then she could drive the golf cart. Since then she has been playing for the school and for pleasure. Outside of school Erin has com-peted in numerous competitions around Northern California. But when it comes to her own local golfing, she plays at her home course called Paradise Valley in Fairfield.

“My inspiration is Tiger Woods because

“I was the last shooter for my team,” said Lisa Wilson, “If I missed the kick we would lose and if I made it we would win, it was all up to me, I kicked the ball just right and we won the game,” said Lisa Wilson. That is her favorite memory from last soccer season.

The senior center forward has been play-ing soccer for the past thirteen years, since she was five, and it is her favorite sport.

“My favorite part of the game is the com-petition and the intensity,” said Wilson who plans to keep her soccer career going. “I plan on playing at either Solano or Sonoma during college,” she said.

when it comes to Tiger, no one can even compare to his skill and determination with the game of golf.”

Erin thinks that as a team they will have “our best sea-son yet” and that individu-ally she feels confident that she will be able to turn her lower scores into higher ones to help her team.

“ Golf is a very relax-ing game, but I also enjoy the challenge it is to always want to beat your own records,” said Davenport.

The Golf team has had five matches with 2 wins and 3 losses.

“I am most excited to play Woodland Christian, they are the best in the league and this year we have a really good choice of beat-ing them!” said Davenport.

“This year the team has definitely bonded, everyone is very close.” said Wilson.

“Lisa contributes by trying her best, she has knee problems so sometimes she gets injured so even then if she can go she’ll go and she works hard,” said Coach Paul Mikelinous known as Coach M, “I believe she cares for her teammates, she helped organize preseason practices for the girls who weren’t on the basketball team her and Brady Latham got that going, and she was able to again show a good attitude throughout the season by contributing overall.”

Heather Shaake, a VCHS alumni is now coaching the girls soccer team along with Coach M who has taken the position of Head Coach.

Last year the VCHS track team had eleven players but this year there may not be one at all. Their coach was Mr. Isaac Bartch but this year he is not coaching the team.

It will be sad to some students if there is not a track team this year. One of those students is Dorothy Madronich a freshmen this year. She said, “I would be disappointed if there wasn’t a track team this year because a lot of other students might want to do it.” Dor-othy was one of the students that participated in track last year as an eighth grader. Although she isn’t planning on doing it this year she still thinks that it would be nice to have a team.

Even for the students who aren’t par-ticipating it will be very unfortunate is we do not have a team. One purpose for schools to have sport teams is for the students to be able to support them and watch them suc-ceed in what they do. If there is not a team, there is no way for that to happen.

As of April 18, the baseball team has put up a dominating 15-4 record overall and a 5-1 league record.

Nathan Norris is one of the team’s pitch-ers and, according to Maxpreps.com, he has thrown 45 strikeouts as of April 18. Nathan attributes their success to “good hitting and fielding”. He says this season has been “good, the best I’ve seen since I’ve been in high school”.

Christian Addamo also commented on the strong start to the season. He said, “it’s a big improvement from last year.

Addamo, a sophomore, has been playing baseball for 11 years and this is his second on the varsity team.

Addamo said, “I started as a kid and I just never stopped playing.” He commented that

baseball has “given me patience because it’s a mental sport and you’re going to have your on and off days. It teaches you patience”.

He also commented on his playing this year. “I’m struggling a little bit this year but I’m hoping to get out of my slump and get back to where I should be.” However, he said he is still “a good contact hitter”. He currently has a batting average of .385.

Next year Addamo will be transferring to Vacaville High School, however, he will not be able to play baseball there. Instead, he says he might play Rugby. “My brother plays college rugby... I’m going to have him help me,” said Addamo.

For this year however, Adda-mo said that he looks forward to playoffs and winning league.

An E-Bulletin sent out on Friday, March 26, stated the changes: "After careful consid-eration of each of the opinions shared and after consultation with the HS faculty, Mrs. Fogh and Mr. Harrell have agreed upon the following addendums to the HS Handbook to be effective immediately:

"1. HS students may wear official Univer-sity / College logo T-shirts that are sold by the individual university / college with the college name on it with clear, visible lettering. T-shirts must be crew cut, not modified, and have sleeves. No profanity or unacceptable logos such as skulls or weapons are allowed.

2. HS students may wear official military logo T-shirts that are sold by the military with the name of the branch of the service written on it with clear, visible lettering. T-shirts must be crew cut, not modified, and have sleeves. No profanity or unacceptable logos such as skulls or weapons are allowed."

The E-Bulletin also talked about how parts of the proposal are going to be revisited later on in the year.

"The administration will revisit the pro-posal of longer hair for boys after the end of the first semester of the 2010/2011 school year if the student body shows good faith in following the existing dress code, both in school and at athletic events, with regards to clothing, jewelry, and hair."

These changes were made after a Town Hall meeting was held in the Multi Purpose Room on Monday, March 22 at 6:30 pm. Stu-dents, parents and staff came and expressed their opinions on the dress code proposal.

Principal Mrs. Janet Fogh, student body President Robbie Basha, and Vice-President

Falynn Martinez led the discussion. At the time, no changes were made to the proposal, but people were allowed to submit other ideas and say what they thought of each aspect of the proposal.

Mrs. Fogh said, "One of the purposes of the dress code is that we want to present a clean cut image and look, and the other reason is we want to have modesty. Students won't get distracted and they'll be able to take school work seriously."

Kiaya Heiss asked if shirts with sports teams and logos could be permitted, and Gene Fogh asked if shirts that support the armed forces and military could be allowed.

Raquel Tucker asked if the length of girl's skirts and dresses could be shortened. Her reason was if a tall girl and a short girl wore the same skirt or dress, the item would be shorter on the taller girl, and she wouldn't be able to wear it, which wouldn't be fair.

Parents voiced their concerns about how the current dress code wasn't being enforced enough.

One parent said, "There is a lot of selec-tive enforcement and that's not fair to the students."

All of the suggestions were heard by the Student Council and Administration. Mrs. Fogh said that she and the staff would be making a decision the next day.

"I think the meeting was excellent because we had an opportunity for parents to hear what's important to the students and for students to hear what's important to the parents," Mrs. Fogh said.

Robbie Basha said, "It's great that par-ents, students, and faculty can express their opinions on the dress code. I did want to hear more about what the students wanted and felt though. Their voice needs to be heard."

Dress Code Changes Made

Everyone loses someone they love. Not in the sense of dying, but in the sense of not seeing them.

Kelsey McCullough said, “He was my favorite teacher.” “And it’s kind of depressing that he’s gone,” McCullough said.

This is how some of the students at VCHS were feeling when they walked into class on Monday, March 8.

Every student took the shock in a dif-ferent way. Some took it calmly. Luke Barker said, “I’m not really sad because I think Bible is still good.

Others were more upset by the depar-ture. Jake Abel said, “It has been negative for me. “I have been tended to be more negative towards the teacher,” Abel said.

When the teachers who have taken his spot--Mr. Wirth for the 9th graders and Mr. Es-pino for the 11th graders--came they both had a somewhat-nice welcome. “The high school has a very welcoming atmosphere,” Wirth said. “I like being a part of the high school.”

Although some students were not happy with their favorite teacher leaving, the stu-dents are gradually starting to like their new teacher. Danielle Rubrick said, “He’s a good guy, good teacher. He teaches us a lot.”

With the new teachers comes a new at-mosphere. Dakota Danoff said, “The kids are different. They are quieter.” Gunter would let the class talk, but sometimes work wouldn’t get done. Since the new teachers have come, that has changed. The class is quieter now but also some students may seem to not care about the Bible class as much as they used to. Abel said, “Students don’t care about the class anymore.”

Gunter is now volunteering full time at his church and is also planning on heading to the Mission Field sometime within a year from this summer. Mr. Gunter said, “So that’s honestly a full time endeavor.”
