**Chart paper hung around the room with these topics****Post-it notes**

Discuss any burning questions at your tables. For questions that are unanswered by your tablemates, write the question on a post-it note (only 1 question per post-it). Hang your question on the appropriate chart paper. If the question is specific to your school, write your school name. All questions will be answered by the end of the day.4Whats your Favorite Jelly Bean?Choose your color:Think about how it looks.Consider the taste. How does it make you feel?

What does your jellybean color say about you?

**Hang color signs around the room.**

Have participants find their primary color and gather in that area.

Read aloud each of the descriptions for each color.5

11You are a variety of colors!

**See Handout posted on IRT wiki** **Color Signs available on IRT wiki as well**

No one is just one color, but one color is usually dominant. All of us have some of the various traits associated with other colors. This is important to realize when dealing with others. We should be able to empathize with those who see things differently and deal with problems differently than we do. We can also recognize our strengths and weaknesses as leaders in an effort to become more of a chameleon.

The Time You Have in JellyBeans

Give IRTs about 1 minute of reflection/processing. Time is precious! There is little time left for the 2013-2014 school year. Today, we will help you focus and prioritize the teachers and students time.

Unpack the jelly bean activities: Why did we do this? 13Learning OutcomesToday, IRTs will:learn effective ways to prepare students for end of the year assessments explore resources to help identify prioritized standards at each grade level to help make informed instructional decisions about pacing modifications and areas for targeted interventionsview EOG sample questions and activities as strategies for test preparationinvestigate common errors made by students on 12-13 sample questions explore resources available to support teachers and students for EOGs and EOY

The most popular question is always: Where do we spend our time and focus for EOG review?

How do we help teachers prioritize and focus, not just for EOG review but for intervention and remediation as well. Lets explore some resources we have available to help us do that.19Prioritization of Standardshttp://www.ncpublicschools.org/docs/acre/assessment/math.pdf

First, it is important to note the areas where DPI has placed emphasis at each grade level. These are the projected percentages on the EOG for each domain at grades 3-5.

Lets take a look at the exact percentages from the 2012-2013 tests.202013 EOG Goal Summaries

% Correct**Refer to Goal Summary Handout for grades 3-5**

You will see there are 44 items on the EOG in grades 3-5. Half of the items are calculator active and inactive. Most of the items in the calculator active section will not require the use of the calculator. Then, the test is broken down into percentages based on the mathematical domains at that grade level. The % correct is indicated for each grade level.21

What do you notice?Give time for tables to reflect on the Goal Summaries. Have IRTs share out any initial thoughts they have when exploring the percentages.

For example, fractions in 5th grade! 24Break

Tired of seeing this?! How has the weather and the cancellation of school (and make-up days) impacted the ability to teach all of the standards? Some teachers were behind before school was cancelled for the first time. How we do we support them?

We are going to explore ways that you as an IRT can support PLTs in this discussion. 26Questions to ConsiderWhere are the teachers RIGHT now?How many instructional days are left?Where will days be cut?Where should the focus be for review & remediation?

As we work to support teachers and PLTs in making sound instructional decisions, we will explore these questions:27Resource #1: Goal Summaries

What resources do we have available on which to justify our decisions?

Resource #1 is the Goal Summaries. DPI has identified the areas with the most emphasis on the EOGs. This information is also used by our focus groups when planning a pacing guide & determining the number of days on a given topic.28Resource #2: Major Work of the GradePosted to CMAPP under the Resources tab at EVERY grade levelIdentified by the writers of the CCSS-MUsed by DPI to identify major areas of focus

**Refer to K-5 Major Work Booklet.**

What resources do we have available on which to justify our decisions?

Resource #2 is the Major Work of the Grade booklet to identify the major clusters vs. supporting/additional clusters. These were identified by the writers of the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and are used by DPI to identify the key areas of focus. The booklet can be found on CMAPP under the Resources tab at every grade level.

Although our focus today is on grades 3-5, teachers in Grades K-2 are also making instructional decisions about pacing. The Major Work of the Grade can be used to support teachers in the lower grades determine areas of focus as well. For example, looking here at grades K and 1.29Resource #3: Scope & Sequence Documents

**Refer to K-5 Scope & Sequence for Quarters 3-4**

What resources do we have available on which to justify our decisions?

Resource #3 are the Scope & Sequence Documents. For todays session, we modified the year-long scope & sequence documents to only include 3rd & 4th quarters at each grade level.

30Resource #4: EOGs & Correlation to 5 Levels

**Refer to NC Statewide Testing Program handout**

What resources do we have available on which to justify our decisions?

Resource #4: Provided by DPI, this handout shows the approximate # (or percentage) of questions that must be correct in order to score at each of the 5 levels. This information was released in March 2014 and was emailed to principals and IRTs by Data & Accountability.

34EOG Released Formshttp://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms

http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/releasedforms All EOGs are posted on the same link. This link is available on CMAPP for teachers.

DPI released one form of each of the EOGs in 2012-2013. Since the standards have not changed, the same released form is applicable for 2013-2014. It has been decided by the State of NC that we will continue to use the state-created EOGs for the next 2 years. Originally, we were slated to transition to the SBAC (Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium) assessments in 2014-2015. That has been put on hold for now.35EOG Released FormsScan through the document independently.Identify problems that are worth sharing with the table.More wrong answers than correctEqual distributionBiggest distractor (subtract instead of added)Test-taking skill/strategy

Take a few moments to share problems as a table group.

Lets explore a few that caught our attention!

Tables 8-14: Grade 5

Tables 15-21: Grade 3

**Each person at the table needs a copy of the grade level released items. See folder in center of table.**

We talked about test taking tips/skills earlier today. Now, we are going to analyze some assessment items to identify mistakes that students made.

Each of the released forms was field tested with approximately 2,000 students across the state of the NC. We are going to examine the items and the percentage of students who chose each item. 36Grade 3 Examples

Share some of the activities teachers in your building use for assessment review.

How does everyone handle the stress? What is your role as IRT in helping?

Allow participants to turn and talk. Have tables share out ideas worth mentioning to the entire group. Facilitators will monitor and listen for these ideas pinpointing ones that can be shared.44EOG Correlation to Case 21

**See handout of 13-14 Case 21 Correlation to EOG Released Items**

There is a strong correlation between the items on the 3rd quarter benchmark and the EOG released items. This document highlights the exact numbers and their correlation.as provided by Case 21. Look at 4th grade here as an example.

Keep in mind there were 40 items on the 3rd quarter benchmark, and there will be 44 items (not including field tested items) on the final EOGs at grades 3-5. It is important to build this stamina for our students as they prepare for the EOGs. 45

Save binders for reuse in 14-15

2015-2016 Digital Plan

Last year of Math Expressions adoption. Access to Think Central will be ending. No consumable items will be purchased for 2014-2015.including all student books in K-2. All of these lessons will now be available on CMAPP and will appear in the alignment lesson notebooks, if needed. Homework is being created, so no Homework & Remembering books are needed.

Alignment lesson orders for Quarters 1-2 needs to be submitted soon. Please complete all orders by April 30th. You are making predictions based on last years numbers. Please be mindful of over-ordering or grade levels who are not using the materials. This is a SIGNIFICANT cost to our districtfiscal responsibility!! We are working to continue to supply both notebooks and student handouts for 2014-2015.

Teacher notebooks will not arrive in binders. Instead, teachers will need to take out the materials in this years binders & replace them with the 14-15 materials. If you are short binders, the school will be responsible for supplying them. Looking ahead to 2015-2016, the teacher notebooks will only be available in digital format for teachers.52Mr. Jackson has 27 students. He has received 9 new students since the beginning of 2nd semester. Three students left for charter schools this week and 2 were expelled. Eight students have IEPs and 3 students have 504 plans. His school has missed 8 days due to inclement weather, of which 4 have to be made up in days on Saturdays.when only an average of 42% of his students show up. Only 10 of his students had a pencil on the day of the EOG, and 6 forgot to take their medication. 12 students are currently being recommended for reading camp due to Read to Achieve. This assessment will be used to determine the students understanding of grade level content and Mr. Jacksons ability to show a years worth of growth with his students. How likely is it that Mr. Jackson will be rated above the state average? Write an equation and solve.
