HOGLOG E-MAIL OK friends and neighbors,

it’s time to get with the ages and get an e-mail

address. We spend a lot of HOG money printing up

newsletters and mailing them out. Wouldn’t you rather to see all this in

living color on your computer??

Tim and Nisha York

FROM OUR SPONSORS:

THE RIDING SEASON HAS ARRIVED!!!

Can you believe it’s already Spring??? Seems like just yesterday, I took over as your

Director and now my time is beginning to dwindle. I can only hope you have had as much fun as

I have over the past year plus as this has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.

Sure, it’s a lot of work, but the rewards of meeting new friends and experiencing the great thrill

of group riding is more “pay” than any one person can hope for.

Bakersfield HOG is blessed to have so many wonderful people willing to “step up”

whenever something needs to be done. When I pass around a signup sheet for volunteers for

one of our HOG events, it rarely comes back to me with empty spaces and many times, there are

more people on the sheet then lines to write their names. This is just a testament to the type of

organization you’ve built for this community. When I ask for help from our Road Captains on our

group rides, more often than not, too many step up to help and some go without an assignment.

I truly believe that Bakersfield HOG Chapter 1580 is the premier HOG group of the entire

organization…all because of our members!

As you already know, your HOG officers are heading over to Las Vegas for Primary

Officer’s Training. This is a two day “course” where HOG officers get the necessary training to

make our HOG chapters run smoothly. This year, I’m fortunate to be accompanied by Assistant

Director Don Oldaker, Secretary Randy Coats, Head Road Captain John Cleveland, Webmaster

Owen Freeman, Webmaster Ralph Sanchez and Chapter Liaison Ben Patten. We’ll be taking

different courses, some together but most not, to teach us what we need to know to improve

Chapter 1580. I went last year and was surprised at the amount of information we received in

two days. Just so you know, HOG does not pay one cent towards this training. All the officers

attending are on their own and pay their own way. (Continued on Page 8)

LOH RIDES

Bakersfield HOG is lucky to have such an active LOH group. Our LOH group plans rides and events for our ladies to

enjoy and spread the joy of riding Harley Davidson motorcycles.

The LOH rides at Bakersfield HOG are open to all riders. However, LOH rides

are organized and led by the ladies in the group to destinations they determine.

If you want to attend a LOH ride, feel

free. We encourage all of our members to abide by our motto to “RIDE AND

HAVE FUN” at all of our events.

However, because LOH rides are organized by our ladies, we ask that all male riders take a position behind the

ladies in the group. Sometimes, a male Road Captain may be asked to lead the

group simply because he has communication with the sweeps. If this is the case, all other male riders should position themselves to the rear of the

group to allow the ladies to lead the ride they’ve organized.

HOG continues to encourage all

members to participate in our group rides and events to the best of their ability.

LOH rides are no exception!

SAFETY SEMINAR – PART 2

PRESENTED BY YOUR LADIES OF HARLEY

We had another tremendous turnout for our safety seminar. Lady riders and future riders came together to

watch two more videos from the Ride like a Pro series.

Those who attended learned defensive riding techniques; the proper use of the front and back brakes; executing

“U” turns (we understand from Amy, Jim is very good at this), and low speed handling and maneuvers.

Handlebar steering versus counter steering was covered, the importance of keeping head and eyes up and

looking where you want to go, how to make an appropriate turn from a stop along with many other

fundamentals and safety practices.

Lady riders who attended received a copy of “Share Your Spark”. The booklet and DVD is a guide to mentoring by

Harley-Davidson, and was a gift from our LOH Officer. Val, thank you so much for these wonderful resources.

Ladies please join us…………we want to share our passion of riding with you. LOH meetings are on the first

Tuesday of each month.

BAKERSFIELD HARLEY OWNERS GROUP CHAPTER 1580 ALCOHOL POLICY

• Safe and responsible motorcycling activity is a major H.O.G. goal.

• The consumption and use of alcohol is a serious personal responsibility involving the safety and welfare of family, riding friends and the individual H.O.G. member.

• IT IS THE POLICY OF THE BAKERSFIELD HARLEY OWNERS GROUP, CHAPTER 1580 THAT NO ALCOHOL WILL BE CONSUMED BEFORE OR DURING A LOCAL HOG RIDING EVENT.

• “PERSONAL” responsibility extends beyond each one of us!!!

WOUNDED HEROES FUND Bakersfield HOG Chapter 1580 was invited to attend the 2009

Wounded Heroes Fund event held at the Kern County Fairgrounds on Sunday, March 01, 2009. Chapter Liaison, Ben Patten put the word out to the motorcycling community and 60 motorcycles showed up to parade to the fairgrounds for a grand entrance. HOG was accompanied by American Legion Riders from Post 26 and Post 682 along with a rider from the Vietnam Vets M/C to make this ride successful. This just goes to show you, when the motorcycling community is asked, the respond.

The group met at Bakersfield Harley Davidson where we went KSU at about 11:45am. We were scheduled to arrive at the Fairgrounds at 12:15 so we took a direct course down the freeway to Hwy 58 and then over to Chester Ave. After exiting there, we turned on Belle Terrace and then stopped to group up before entering the fairgrounds. The Wounded Heroes organizers made it possible for all of us to park right in the main patio of the fairgrounds entrance. The ceremony was very touching with many “wounded heroes” in attendance. There were many active duty service people and, of course, a lot of veterans. HOG had a table reserved for us which gave us a great view of the stage and the slide show presentation. The crowd looked to fill the building which was good for this very important fundraiser event. The money raised will go directly toward local families suffering through the recuperation of a family member injured in the war on terrorism. Although we didn’t get much notice this year, you can bet we’ll know about this in advance next year. HOG will announce this to our members so we can surpass the number of bikes we had participating this year. This is a great cause that needs our attention to continue our tradition of supporting our U.S. Veterans.

MEMBER OF THE QUARTER Each quarter, Bakersfield HOG Chapter 1580 will recognize a HOG member who has gone above and beyond in their service to our organization. These members display the true meaning of HOG in giving their time and effort so others can enjoy the HOG experience. The Member of the Quarter for the 1st

quarter of 2009 is…

LEONARD MULHOLLAND

Leonard will receive a certificate at the general meeting and two tickets to our annual HOG Christmas party in December. Thank you Leonard for your hard work and dedication to HOG.

NOTE: A release form is to be signed before each HOG function by each guest or non HOG member participating in a HOG function before the time of departure (including those who might shag). Release forms will be available at Bakersfield Harley-Davidson ½ hour before departure.

Now, that the time has changed, people will be taking drives to enjoy the beautiful

weather. When we are out on scenic rides (wild flowers, the California coast, mountain

areas), we will be sharing the road with many other vehicles.

To make our day more enjoyable and ensure our safety, we can obey traffic laws, use

our turn/hand signals, check our mirrors often, and keep full attention on our riding

always anticipating road hazards. Try to avoid aggressive drivers, as there will always be

those who are in a hurry. Be well rested before attempting a full day of riding. By

eliminating poor driving habits, we can improve our chances of a perfect day with friends

and Harley.

Here we go, more daylight, and much to see!

Dale Pearce, Safety Officer

Two groups, 41 HOG bikes in all on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. We left Bakersfield Harley-Davidson on March 15th at 3:30 pm and rode North. Dale Pearce planned the 75-mile scenic route to Cool Hand Luke’s in Tulare where staff greeted us in the parking lot. Ben, Bobbi, and their crew were outstanding. They served 70 bikers flawlessly.

Dale purchased two dinner gift certificates, and the restaurant manager donated one. Jolyn, Randy, and TC were the winners of $25.00 each. Diane took home $77.00 from the 50/50 drawing.

Some special announcements include Gary celebrating his 50th birthday this weekend. Val invited her brother, Steve, as a guest with Diane riding as a passenger. Kim joined the dinner ride after a long weekend of motorcycle training, and the best part is she passed the course. Congratulations, Kim!

Awesome food, service, and the company of so many HOG members….we cannot think of a better way to spend an evening. Thank you to the entire group of road captains who participated in this ride. Dale & Bert PearceDale & Bert PearceDale & Bert PearceDale & Bert Pearce

Tech Tip

What a day for a ride," you think to yourself. What you should be thinking, though, is "Is my ride ready for the day?" It's a valid question, no matter how often or infrequent you ride. Either on-the-road usage and

vibration or in-the-garage inactivity can take their toll on your bike, potentially degrading safety, control, performance and comfort.

That's why the Motorcycle Safety Foundation recommends a short pre-ride check of your favorite two-wheeler before every ride. To help you remember what to check, the MSF came up with the acronym T-CLOCS, which stands for Tires, Controls, Lights, Oil, Chassis and Sidestand.

These are simple, easy-to-access items that anyone who rides should be able to identify and check. And despite the length of the MSF's list, you can probably check everything in about three minutes. Depending on what you find, that could be the best three minutes you spend all day.

Tires and wheels

Since these are where you and the road meet, they're probably the most important things to look over. A problem can affect handling—sometimes severely.

Are your rims free of dings? Are your spokes tight and straight? Check pressures in both tires. Since most manufacturers specify pressures for cold tires, this is the only accurate way to check them, as they heat up quickly on the road, raising the pressure. Consult your owner's manual or call your tire manufacturer's hotline for the proper pressures for your particular bike. If you own multiple bikes, it may be difficult to remember all those different tire specs. And since this is one of those critical things you should check often, you may want to make a small card with each tire's recommended pressure, then hang it on your garage wall, or anywhere that's handy.

While you're down there checking the tires, make sure you've got plenty of tread. You should have more than 1/16 of an inch, about the distance between Lincoln's head and the top of a penny. Remove foreign objects that may have lodged in the treads, and make sure there aren't any cuts in the tire. A scuff is nothing to be worried about, but if it's a deep scratch, you might want to have it checked.

Controls and cables

A snapped throttle or clutch cable can leave you on the side of the road, so check 'em. Operate anything connected to a cable and make sure that levers and cables feel smooth and don't bind. Apply the front brake and push the bike forward. The brake should feel firm, and the front wheel should not move. Check the rear brake in the same fashion.

Lights Seeing and being seen are two great ways to avoid unwanted incidents on the road, so making

sure your lights work is key. Start by turning on your ignition. Are the headlight's high beam and low beam working? Does the taillight come on? Does the brake light come on when you depress the brake pedal and lever? Check left and right turn signals, front and rear. Remember that the cause of a malfunction here could be a relay or bulb. Lastly, don't forget to check your horn.

(Continued next page)

NOTE: A release form is to be signed before each HOG function by each guest or non HOG member participating in a HOG function before the time of departure (including those who might shag). Release forms will be available at Bakersfield Harley-Davidson ½ hour before departure.

2008 HOGLOG Page 8 of 12

Oil and fuel Running out of gas is a bummer, but since many motorcycles don't have gas gauges, it's a very real

possibility. Check the gas level in the tank, and be sure your fuel petcock isn't on "reserve," which could leave you with a nasty surprise if you roll to a stop thinking you've still got gas in reserve. And don't forget to reset the tripmeter every time you fill up.

Running out of gas can be inconvenient, but running out of oil can turn your bike into an inert display of public art. Even some new bikes can use enough oil to be down a quart between oil changes, so check it before every ride.

Chassis Though an improperly adjusted suspension may not seem critical, imagine your surprise as your bike

behaves differently in the middle of a curve because you forgot to reset it or check the air pressure after sitting in the garage all week.

Sit on the bike and rock it, making sure that everything moves smoothly and relatively slowly. If the front or rear end behaves like a pogo stick, a trip to your trusty mechanic should be in your immediate future.

If you have an adjustable suspension, remember to read your owner's manual and adjust it properly for the load you'll be carrying and the type of riding you'll be doing.

Sidestand and centerstand The sidestand is a handy little item—it's what keeps your motorcycle off the ground. Make sure it's not

cracked or bent. Check the spring or springs. Are they in place, and do they have enough tension to keep the sidestand safely up?

Don't forget to look at the engine cut-out switch or pad, if so equipped. If everything's in place and operating properly you're done, and you're good to go. Enjoy the day.

(Continued from Page 2)

Let’s talk about some upcoming events. Our Bike Nights in April, May and June are going to be held at some places that will

donate back a percentage of what we spend to MDA in our name. In April, we’re going to Rubio’s Grill on Rosedale Hwy. In May, we’ll

be having Bike Night at Sequoia Sandwich Shop near the Rubio’s Grill and in June, we’re headed to Baja Fresh on Calloway Drive just

north of Hageman Road. There will be flyers in the HOGLOG and on the website. We’re also sending one to the e-mail addresses we

have on file for our members. Print the flyer and bring it with you because that’s how they will know you’re with our group. Heck,

print the flyer and give it to your family members because the money we’re raising is going to a great cause.

The May Fun Run is going to be a great ride. HOG is headed to the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley. Your HOG Road

Captains are going to have a “training ride” the weekend before and will pre-ride the course to make sure we all get there safely. We

plan to use this ride to get our Road Captains all on the same page when it comes to HOG group rides. This Fun Run will cost $35 each

but it will be worth the money as we’re having a catered lunch under the wings of Air Force One. HOG thanks to John and Jolyn

Cleveland for setting this up.

The June Fun Run is shaping up to be a real blast too. We’re headed north to Casa De Fruta near Hollister for an overnighter

that will include recreational vehicles. HOG thanks to Jeff Glover for finding this great little out of the way place with RV spots and a

motel. Tent campers are welcome to join us too. Hal Onsum is planning a ride to Monterey’s Canary Row for “lunch on your own”

and we’re thinking of a pot luck for Saturday night and maybe even an evening movie in the park. The route for those of you riding

your bikes up there should be Hwy 58 over to Hwy 33, then north to Hwy 198. Take that west to Hwy 25 and that will take you right

into the south side of Hollister. Continue north to the 156 and go east a mile or so and there’s Casa De Fruta. Its 211 miles from

Bakersfield Harley Davidson but doable for most.

There’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes of HOG. HOG officers are working hard to make sure our members have

some great events to participate in. That brings up participation…if you aren’t out riding with HOG, you’re missing out on a lot of fun.

So, if you’ve missed the last few events, here’s a personal invitation to come out and join us. Better yet, bring a friend to a HOG event

and see if it’s something they might like. We keep signing up new members and our club is growing with quality people who like to

live by our motto to “RIDE AND HAVE FUN.”

See you at the next HOG event and Ride Safe… Dave Fisher, DIRECTOR

MARCH LADIES OF HARLEY RIDE The Ladies of Harley Ride for March departed Bakersfield Harley Davidson on

Sunday, March 29th at 10:00am. Destination…Kern Valley Brewery. The Kern

Valley Brewery has been open for a year now and they have assembled a lot

of the history of the area. Twenty five beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycles

with 35 HOG members headed out through the canyon and up to Kernville.

The group encountered some strong winds when they got up toward Lake

Isabella but that was expected so it didn’t cause any problems. Another

successful ride for HOG and especially for Ladies of Harley!!! Thank you to all

who showed up and went.

(You will also receive one in your e-mail and we’ll have them at the General Meeting.) Rubio’s Grill will donate 20% of your total purchase (less tax) to MDA in the name of Bakersfield HOG. Take some extra flyers to your work and give them to your family members. Rubio’s puts out a great dinner, especially the fish tacos!!! Come out and enjoy the company of HOG and raise some money for a great charity. See you there.
