“April Fools!!”

It seems people in all times have loved to act foolish once

in a while. Medieval Kings paid for court jesters to give

comic relief to the palace. Ancient Rome held a festival

the last days of March called “Hilaria” in which people

dressed in disguises and attended masquerades. In fact,

it seems one of the longest lived holidays we know about

1996 – Taco Bell announced it had agreed to

purchase Philadelphia’s Liberty Bell and

intended to rename it the Taco Liberty Bell.

1998 – Burger King advertised a “Left-Handed

Whopper”

may just be – of all things – April Fools!

Some historians believe it may have begun in 1582 when France officially

adopted the 1563 Gregorian calendar, which changed the first day of the year

from the spring equinox to January 1st. People who were either slow to get the

news, or who refused to change with the times and held their New Year’s

celebration in April were called April fish (gullible enough to get caught). In

the 1700’s, Scotland caught on to the holiday by playing pranks on people’s

derrières such as pinning tails or “kick me” signs on them. However, there are

evidences that this day was celebrated long before the Gregorian calendar

came in to play. The above mentioned “Hilaria” apparently had been

celebrated a multitude of centuries B.C., and many times culminated on April

1st as the last of the Hilaria hysteria gave way to the mundane chores of

everyday life. Those who wanted to keep at the games and tomfoolery were

called April fools. Others speculate that it simply came about naturally in

many cultures such as India, Germany, England, and others as a recourse

irony to “Mother Nature’s” unpredictable weather at this time of year.

Some of the most historic pranks played on April Fools include:

1957 – The BBC reported that Swiss farmers were experiencing a record

spaghetti crop and showed footage of people harvesting noodles from trees.

1985 – Sports Illustrated ran an article about a rookie pitcher named Sidd

Finch who threw a fastball over 168 mph.

April 9th 10:30a–2p – Pot Luck Lunch & Games!

It’s 2nd Tuesday Lunch & Game Time again! Last

month we got to know some really great folks! I

hope you will all be back again this month! Bring a

favorite dish, and… get ready to laugh!

April 11th – Lufkin/Nacogdoches! Leave the

church at 9:00, Shop at Lufkin’s Antique Mall,

eat lunch at Ralph and Kacoo’s, then to Bonnie

Worley’s Auction and historical downtown

Nacogdoches, arriving back at 5:00. We have 50

people signed for this trip and secured a 56

passenger bus. If you aren’t signed up, get your

name on the list quickly – only 6 seats left!

April 15th @ 6:30p – Superman Theme Night!

We all grew up with him. We’ve said it a million

times, “Look! Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a

plane! It’s Superman! And who, disguised as…” I

could repeat the entire quote, but will give you a

break. What fun! I’ve never been to a Superman

event, but we have some interesting nuggets you

may have overlooked concerning the man of steel.

Who is he…really? We’ll answer that provoking

question on April 15th! I know… you think he’s

Clark Kent, right? Hope you will be there!

May 18th @ 10:00a – Ranger’s Afternoon Game!

“Take me out to the ballgame!” Never fear…

even though it’s an afternoon game, we’ll still go to

Cole Mountain’s for lunch at 11:15a. Can’t wait for

their chicken fried steak! The Rangers play the

St. Louis Cardinals at 3:00p. We’re thinking we’ll

be back at the church around 10:00p. Sign Up!
