I choose to lead with integrity. I was honored to speak at the opening ceremony and offer my congratulations for Brescia’s new Academic Pavilion in 2019. With this new facility, students will receive a world-class educational experience and be well prepared to contribute to society. I am so proud to be a Brescia student. Brescia helps students build their self-confidence and prepares them to become leaders. I feel comfortable and safe here. When I do struggle I don’t feel alone as I know all faculty and staff are there as a strong backup. I came to Brescia for the Preliminary Year Program so I could learn to adapt to university life earlier. As a newcomer to Canada, the program created a supportive environment for me to learn and integrate into this new culture. It also prepared me well for the Nutrition and Dietetics program. I love that my classes are mostly small so I can develop close and supportive relationships with my professors and feel comfortable asking questions and expressing my thoughts and opinions.

I choose to lead with determination. I chose Brescia because I wanted a close-knit community where I wasn’t just a number. Because I am also a member of the Western varsity swim team, I have the best of both worlds and get to embrace my introverted and extroverted sides. I spend a couple hours socializing and swimming at Western’s Rec Center or on main campus and then I get to return to Brescia’s small, quiet campus where I know most people and feel more comfortable. Going between different ‘worlds’ each day is a blessing. I competed in the 2016 Olympics and am training to compete in the 2021 Olympics for Antigua and Barbuda. I am also focused on having a great final year swimming for Western. Brescia has supported me as a student-athlete by accommodating me when I have competitions and providing me with anything I need. I try to lead by encouraging others to be the best version of themselves. I hope my teammates and friends see me as someone they can talk to about anything and as a woman who is driven and determined.

Even Better than Home
Every day the Mercato staff works to create inspired food and to deliver engaged service. The result: Not only do you have delicious, healthy food to eat, but you feel valued—and right at home. If you have a dish that reminds you of home, let us know. Our chef will try to prepare these items so you can share your favourites with the Brescia community! From Japanese sushi to Chinese dumplings, you will enjoy an array of foods from all over the world. Here are a few of our students’ favourites:
• Korean Bi Bim Bap
• Cubano Sandwich
• Stuffed Pasta Bar
• Caprese Foccacia
• Build Your Own Taco Salad Bar
• Middle Eastern Salad Bar
• Tandoori Pizza
• Warm Apple Oatmeal Breakfast Bake
• Fresh Fruit Smoothies
I choose to lead with patience. When I applied to Brescia, I was attracted to the beautiful residence. I really enjoy living in Clare Hall because it is a short walk to my classes and convenient to everything. I always know what is happening on campus because the residence assistants post reminders about upcoming events and other important things. I like all of the furniture that came with my room—especially the queen bed and the bedside lamp because I like to read before I go to sleep. On weekends, I spend time in the lounge, watching TV shows. It is also a good place for making friends. I also love the food and atmosphere at the Mercato. I like to work there with a cup of coffee or sit at a big table and chat with my friends over some french fries. You can get many different kinds of food there, from Japanese sushi to Korean kimchi to Indian curry and Chinese dumplings. My favourite is Korean BBQ short ribs.

A History of Commitment
Creating a culture that supports international students has always been important to Brescia. In 1935, Brescia graduated Rosalina Saez, the first female international student to graduate from a Canadian university. Our commitment to international student success continues to this day.

BRESCIA CELEBRATES DIVERSITY AN D DIFFERENCES. You will join students from all over the globe—from the Caribbean to Asia, the United States to the United Arab Emirates. While your backgrounds, cultures, and faiths may be different, you will be united by a desire to receive a student-centred education that will help you realize your future goals. You will feel welcomed, accepted, and supported. We will go out of our way to make sure you feel at home.
“As Brescia’s international program coordinator, I welcome you with open arms and am here
to give you the support and information you need to adjust to your new life.
Please reach out and I will share some great resources.”
Lissette Ochoa 226.927.5398
As you prepare for life at Brescia, you might be wondering:
International Bridging Program: Receive help with everything from getting your student card and bus pass to setting up your bank account and mobile phone; settling into residence and learning about Brescia and Canadian culture; and checking out London’s best shops and restaurants—and Niagara Falls!
Orientation Week (“OWeek”): Held before classes start, this fun, five-day event will help you make new friends, learn your way around campus, and connect with the Brescia and Western community.
Soph Team: Get support and guidance during OWeek and throughout your first year from this dedicated group of upper-year Brescia students.
Student Connector Program: Connect with upper-year students (called “ambassadors”) who will also be there to help you transition to life at Brescia and in London.
Unibuddy: Visit our website for the opportunity to connect directly with current students from a variety of backgrounds, countries, and programs to learn about their Brescia experience.
• Will I fit in? (Absolutely)• What is there to do on campus? (Plenty)• Will I have opportunities to share my culture and back-
ground with others? (Many)
Brescia has the programs and resources to help you transition, not only to Brescia but to London:
I choose to lead with confidence. For three years I was a facilitator for Brescia’s International Bridging Program. I got involved because I remembered how scared I felt when I came to Brescia from China and I wanted to help other international students adapt. By being a Bridging facilitator, I learned about different cultures and traditions. I worked collaboratively with and supported other facilitators. I felt a sense of achievement when new students said how much they benefited from the program. Being involved in the Bridging Program and on Brescia University College Students’ Council (BUCSC) enriched my life. I improved my leadership and organizational skills and expanded my network. I now have friends from all over the world. The variety of my experiences and the leadership I developed and demonstrated at Brescia helped me become a competitive candidate for the Master of Food Science program at the University of British Columbia. I want to become a quality assurance coordinator and directly impact people’s health by providing them with healthy and safe food products.

If you face significant, complex life circumstances, our Case Management Services will provide confidential care, coordination, and support. WON DERING WHERE YOU R BRESCIA EDUCATION WILL TAKE YOU IN THE FUTURE? WHEREVER YOU WANT TO GO.
When you graduate from Brescia, you’ll join an impressive alumnae network—women who are extraordinary people as well as extraordinary leaders. They live, learn, work, and lead all over Canada—and the world. Here are just a few of our inspiring graduates and the positions they hold. Imagine yourself among them.
I choose to lead with gratitude. I chose Brescia after participating in Take the Lead, Brescia’s public speaking contest for high school girls. Everybody was so supportive and welcoming. It was like I was already home. The academic counselors helped me organize my schedule and answered all my questions. I experienced that support from recruitment throughout my education. Brescia gives everyone an opportunity to get involved. In my last year I was president of the Caribbean Student Group. I also served as a Student Ambassador, which allowed me to meet people from all over the world and to feel comfortable speaking in front of them. My goal was always to get a good education and then return to Jamaica to work for my family’s business. I have grown as a leader thanks to Brescia. It will always be my home away from home.
RAINE WILLIAMS (pictured at right) Class of 2020 / Accounting & Leadership / from Kingston, Jamaica / currently residing in Kingston / Business Developer, Matrix Group of Companies
I choose to lead with zeal. As Data, Strategy and Innovation Consultant with the World Health Organization, I facilitate and implement strategic dialogues with Member States in the Western Pacific Region to develop longer term health system transformation plans and provide support to the COVID-19 research work. Brescia prepared me for my career by combining an academically challenging environment with an emphasis on values and leadership and by facilitating holistic development, a thirst for knowledge, and a strong desire to leave a positive imprint on the world. Brescia is known for being a trailblazer, and I wanted an education that would make me question my assumptions and beliefs. What stays with me today is the authenticity and engagement of the community, the brilliance and guidance of my professors and the warmest of memories.

I choose to lead with commitment. My experience as an international student at Brescia has been amazing. I have had the opportunity to interact with people from different countries with different backgrounds and learn a lot of new things from them. Brescia helped me transition to life in Canada through the Bridging Program. I came to campus a week early to get familiar with campus, meet other international students, learn to navigate the city and how to get to shopping centres, and get as much settled as I could. Faculty and staff were always ready to help with anything I needed. The International Students Coordinator was there for me every step of the way, too. Brescia really makes sure that every student gets the individual attention they need. All of your professors know you by name, your strengths and weaknesses, and their doors are always open if you need any extra help. Everyone from librarians to academic advisors are there to help you individually and to make sure you succeed in your classes. Brescia helped me get outside of my comfort zone and believe in myself.
