All babies will be offered an injection against deadly meningitis B – ending a year-long delay, the Health Secretary has said. The vaccine costs £20 a time and is expected to be available on the NHS by the end of the year.Jeremy Hunt’s announcement follows growing pressure from charities, which warned that children were dying and suf-fering devastating injuries while wrangling about the cost continued. There are around 1,870 cases of meningitis B in the country each year and it commonly affects the under-fives and teenagers. It leads to around 120 deaths and leaves another 400 with life-long disabilities in-cluding brain damage, amputations and blindness. A panel of scientific advisers had recommended in October 2013 that the vaccine should not be intro-duced as it was not deemed cost-effective.Nearly 800,000 babies each year would be eligible for the jab at an average annual cost of £16million. Chari-ties estimate the NHS would spend around £3million treating and caring for just one child who has survived meningitis but is left with life-long disabilities. GPs would give the injection to

babies from the age of two months, with boosters at four months and 12 months. In most cases, they would have it with the five-in-one jab and the rotavirus oral vac-cination.The move means the UK will be the first country in the world to offer the vaccine to all babies.Children need three doses in the first year of life, making the maximum final bill for the 700,000 born each year in England and Wales £42million. GPs are also paid a £7.50 fee for each dose administeredMeningitis is an infection of the outside layer of cells surrounding the brain and spi-nal cord, causing inflammation and dam-age. It can kill within hours and is the most common cause of death by infectious dis-ease in childhood.

Allama Iqbal Sunday cricket is in full swing. Season kicks off on the 26th April. We have some tasty fixtures to get the proceedings underway. New entrants Narmando are away to Al-Mahdi, Kashmir away to Earl Marshall and Abbeydale home to Sharrow. Millhouses welcomes League Champions Sehnsa A.Theres some key information, league would like to inform the team captains that League Handbook meeting will be on Monday 20 April. Venue to be con-firmed. We're aiming for 6pm. All clubs must be represented by either captain or Secretary. Non attendance will result in a fine. We hope to hand out league balls, so it's imperative you settle the fees for the balls to Ibrar Khan or Zahid Salim.Aside from that I have some bad news, this year we may have to pay extra for YCB affiliations. ECB have decided to up fees to £45.00 for each club plus £15 for each team. So clubs in our league with one team will pay £60.00. We've already received £30, which I thank you but you may have to pay another £30, if we are to continue to use play cricket website and receive other additional benefits. I am working with YCB to see if they can help assist with the amount.Executive Committee would like to wish you all a successful season. I'll keep you guys posted during the season, which hopefully will be as good as last or better.

William Hague is standing down as an MP after an il-lustrious 25 year career in the House of Commons.Looking back on his time in politics, the former for-eign secretary and Conservative Party leader said he had few regrets, other than losing the 2001 general election. “I’m not one for having a lot of regrets but I do regret that we didn’t get things back together again faster in the Conservative Party.”But Mr Hague is far from alone in seeking a new role,

away from the famous green benches, after 7 May’s general election. A total of 86 MPs have announced their intention to stand down, according to BBC Anal-ysis. It might sound like a lot, out of 650 MPs, but it is a long way short of the total in 2010, when 149 MPs headed for the exit in the biggest Commons clear-out in history, in the wake of the expenses scandal.A total of 17 former cabinet ministers – 12 Labour and five Conservative – are standing down at this election.Three female Conservative MPs, all elected in 2010, have announced they will retire. This constitutes 6% of female Tory MPs. In all, seven of the 2010 Tory in-take will stand down after a single term.High profile Tory retirees include former health secre-tary Andrew Lansley, Sir George Young and Sir Peter Tapsell, the Father of the House, who was first elected to the Commons in 1959. He has clocked up 54 years on the green benches, with a two year break from the Commons in the mid-1960s, making him one of the longest-serving MPs in British history.Former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rikfind, who now sits as an independent after having the Tory Whip withdrawn, is also standing down.

Communities secretary Eric Pickles has named the five commissioners who will take over the running of crisis-hit Rotherham and also promised £250,000 to help set up an outreach project to help victims of child sexual exploita-tion (CSE).Mr Pickles said Sir Derek Myers will be the Lead Commissioner, Stella Manzie will take the role of the Managing Director Commissioner and Malcolm Newsam will be nominated as Chil-dren's Social Care Commissioner. He said Mary Ney and Julie Kenny will be supporting commis-sioners.Mr Pickles announced that he would replace Rotherham Council's cabinet with appointed commissioners following the Casey Report ear-lier last month which denounced the author-ity's woeful response to CSE in the town.Louise Casey's report followed last year's shock-ing Jay Report which described how more than 1,400 children had been subjected to rape, traf-ficking and grooming between 1997 and 2013.Mr Pickles also referred to the Risky Business project in Rotherham - highlighted in both re-

ports as a beacon of hope in the town but which was effectively closed down by the council. He said: "The (Casey) report concludes that the critical work undertaken by Risky Business 'is now missing from Rotherham'. This should not continue, and historic victims of child sexual ex-ploitation should be given the help they need."So, accordingly, subject to being provided with an appropriate business case demonstrating value for money, I am prepared to make avail-able £250,000 over the next two financial years for a Risky Business-style service to be estab-lished."

Congratulations to Local MP Paul Blomfield who has been nominated for the Guardian Uni-versity Award. Since 2010 he has been champi-oning for our universities and their students to promote their huge social, academic, cultural and economic contribution. “Our two universi-ties give life-changing opportunities to students of all ages and make a vital contribution to the

local economy,” he said, adding “I’m proud to represent a constituency which is home to more students than any other (36,000). I have spoken out and campaigned on a range of gov-ernment decision which I think have badly af-fected universities and students. “Tripling fees, discouraging international students from study-ing here, cutting disabled support and more.”

Bus passengers in Sheffield have given a top mark to the city’s local services in new survey by Stagecoach Yorkshire. The Shef-field Customer Satisfaction Report showed that 100 per cent of customers intend to continue using Stagecoach buses.Research highlighted that 97 per cent of people would recom-mend the operator to a friend, 93 per cent were satisfied or very satisfied with the appearance of Stagecoach drivers, 92 per cent with driving standards and safety on board and 90 per cent with vehicle comfort.A total of 90 per cent of people were satisfied or very satisfied with the ease of getting where passengers want to go.Other areas to score highly were service frequency (89 per cent), services overall (87 per cent) and customer service and StagecoachSmart travel cards (both 83 per cent).Overall 78 per cent of people were satisfied or very satisfied with Stagecoach’s ticket range.Customers in South Yorkshire were more satisfied with Stage-coach services, punctuality and value for money than any other operator

Work on the next phase of The Moor’s regeneration is soon to mean a new shopping, dining and cinema complex rising from the rubble.Over the next few months the busy building site, which has left a glaring gap in part of the shopping parade, should be dominated by cranes putting together the new building. It will house a flagship Primark, four other retailers, restau-rants and the nine-screen picture house – following on from the relocation of the market, stores opening and upgrade of the street’s appearance.

New funding of £163,000 will be used by Sheffield Council to help people struggling to heat their homes. The money will pay for advice services and work to link them with about 1,000 peo-ple who are most in need. The council says an estimated 34,000 households – out of 230,000 in Sheffield – are living in fuel poverty where they have to make decisions between keeping warm or eating regularly.Vulnerable residents will be given support to help them lower their energy bills, in particular families with young children, the elderly, adults living alone and those on low incomes.

It will cost more than £12bn and will take 13 years to fix all the pot-holes on roads in England and Wales, a report has claimed. Despite more being filled in the cash spent on repairs in the last 12 months has been “wasted”. An annual survey also found an increase in the amount paid in compensation to motorists in England to more than £20m. Local authority staffing costs, to process the claims, have in-creased to around £18m.Essentially, the money spent on filling the 2.7 million potholes re-ported is wasted - it is inefficient and short term in its effectiveness. The money would be better spent preventing potholes forming in the first place. The £6bn of funding pledged between 2015 and 2021 is welcome, and hopefully will be confirmed by an incoming govern-ment. But the truth is that although it sounds like a big investment, it will only be enough for local authorities to tread water and it will do nothing to tackle the backlog or prevent continuing deterioration.Every mile of motorways and trunk roads will receive £1.4m fund-ing over the next six years compared with £31,000 per mile for lo-cal roads. This makes little sense given the Government’s own traffic projections predict an increase in local traffic of more than 40% by 2040. Councils need billions, not millions, to bring our roads up to scratch.

Keen gardeners across Rotherham are reminded that the council's green waste collection service starts this month. From week commencing, Monday, April 6, (Easter Monday) green bins containing garden waste only will be collected on the same day as their recycling blue boxes and blue bags. Residents are being advised to check their household waste calendars that list the scheduled collection day. These are cur-rently being posted to 115,000 properties across the borough. Alternatively, they can check the schedules on the Rotherham Borough Council web site at www.rotherham.gov.uk/bincol-lections This collection page has been updated already to show exactly when green collections take place for all proper-ties across the borough through to the end of October.

A petition signed by over 2500 people calling on the Government to keep essential funding for GP practices has been handed in at 10 Downing St. The petition calls for a halt to cuts which threaten 100 GPs practices with closure across the country – including two in central Sheffield. Up to 13,000 patients in the city could lose their medical practice in the next few years unless the policy is reversed, campaigners claim. The petition to challenge the Government’s decision to axe the Minimum Practice Income Guarantee has been presented to the Government by Sheffield MP Paul Blomfield, doctors, staff and patients. Campaigners say the changes will result in some GP practices losing as much as £140,000 of income. The petition was handed in at No.10 by Paul Blomfield MP and a group of doctors, staff and patients from Devonshire Green and Hanover Medical Centres.Paul Blomfield MP said:“Thousands of people in Sheffield signed the petition and we made the Health Minister aware of their strong concerns. The Govern-

ment needs to think again, halt the cuts and pro-vide fair funding for our local GP practices before any of them are forced to close. I’ll keep pressing the case until we see this policy changed.”

British Land has announced it will carry out a ‘substantial’ £50 mil-lion internal refurbishment of Meadowhall, to celebrate the shop-ping centre’s 25th birthday. The refurbishment is set to commence in autumn 2015 and will be completed by the end of 2017. The refurbishment includes new way finding, mall seating and lighting as well as the installation of dramatic lighting artwork. The price of both first and second class stamps has increased. The cost for first and second class stamps has risen by 1p to 63p and 54p respectively. Send-ing a large letter has increased by 2p to 95p for first class and by 1p to 74p for second class. Despite the increase, Royal Mail has insisted the prices still represent among the best value in Europe. The firm has pointed out the European average for first class letters is 72p and 62p second class.

The privatised mail service is in a bat-tle with commercial delivery firms and increased use of electronic communi-cations. Royal Mail has questioned the sustainability of the company’s Universal Service Obligation (USO) under which it must deliver letters to each UK address. It has accused rivals of “cherry-picking” - concentrating their operations in urban areas - to save on cost though the indus-try regulator has said it sees no reason to re-examine the obligation.

Sheffield MP Paul blomfield was honoured to win the 2015 'Inspiring Leader’ in higher education at the Guardian University Awards. Paul has been dedicated to promoting higher education in Par-liament since he became an MP. He has been a champion in Parliament for our univer-sities and students, and promote their huge academic, cultural, social and eco-nomic contribution. Mr Blomfield said “I’m proud to represent a constituency which includes two world-class univer-sities and is home to 36,000 students, more than any other in the country. The way our universities give life-changing opportunities to people of all ages con-tinually inspires me, and I want more people to have these opportunities. This is why I’ve spoken out and campaigned against the Government decisions which have badly affected universities and stu-dents - like tripling fees, discouraging in-

ternational students from studying here, cutting disabled student allowance - and why I've made the case for proper investment in the research which is vital to the country's future”.

Paul Blomfield Wins Top Higher Education Award

A scheme to acknowledge the work of Shef-field’s ‘unsung heroes’ has been announced at the last meeting of the City Council. The Leader of the City Council, Councillor Julie Dore and the Lord Mayor of Sheffield Councillor Peter Rip-pon have suggested re-launching a Civic Awards scheme in Sheffield.Sheffield already has the popular Sheffield Leg-ends – a ‘walk of fame’ that honours local celeb-rities who have achieved national, or preferably international, repute in their areas of work. Many people make a tremendous contribu-tion to the city and it is hoped that launching

this scheme will provide some recognition of their work. These awards will be nominated by local people every year and will be person-ally thanked by the Lord Mayor in recognition of their efforts. It is intended that nominations from the public will be requested each year for both the Sheffield Legends and Civic Awards and an independent Selection Board, chaired by the Lord Mayor, would choose those to be recognised. Details about how to nominate people for this year’s Civic Awards and Sheffield Legends will be announced shortly.

LORD MAYOR’S CIVIC AWARDS SCHEME

Cheap cigarettes sold on the streets of Sheffield are being smuggled in by organised criminal gangs, it is claimed. Crime charity bosses are urging members of the public to turn in those selling illegal cigarettes across South Yorkshire. The products – rolling tobacco and cigarettes – cost less than legal products, because tax has not been paid on them, costing the UK economy billions of pounds each year.

Test purchasing operations found illegal tobacco and cigarettes being sold by retailers in Abbey-dale, Pitsmoor and Darnall in Sheffield, as well as Aston in Rotherham.Crimestoppers’ director of operations, said: “Crimestoppers has a responsibility to tackle all types of crime. We hope to be able to clean the streets of illicit tobacco”.

Creating a Website for Your Business - The Beauty and Benefits

PLUS: Funding Available Towards The Cost of Your

Website

Why should you have a website?

In order to succeed in today's world, you must have an Internet presence. More and more peo-ple log on to the internet everyday; there are bil-lions of users world-wide and there are several reasons why one needs a web site. A website is a powerful first impression.

A website can be an effective marketing and promotion tool that requires little maintenance, functions 24/7 and reaches out to people all over the world. It can help you win and retain custom-ers, perhaps generating much-needed additional

revenue. And because of lower costs, margins on online sales can be significantly higher.

How can a website be useful?

Enhanced customer convenience:

Your business concern can be more easily and quickly reached, every time a potential or an existing client searches for relevant businesses, products and services over the Internet. Your customers can always keep in touch with you and your business, just by knowing your web site ad-dress.

Greater reach-ability of your business profile:

Your business profile can be accessible from any-where in the world. No other ad medium pro-vides such global coverage. You need not depend on phone book entry or restricted yellow pages and newspaper ad presentations, any longer.

Access all Hours:

Website is available to you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It will be your hardest working employee, never getting sick, or taking a holiday. And you can rest as-sured that your website is al-ways there for you – to answer your customers’ questions or to collect their feedback on

your behalf.

Time-saving:

Prospective clients can learn about you and your business at any time of the day simply by visiting your website, so you won’t have to be present or involved with the process in any way. Your pre-cious time can be saved and invested in other activities that can increase your profits and fur-ther enhance the scope of your business.

Cost -Cutting:

You can save a lot of money cutting your costs on print ads, brochures, coupons, flyers, spe-cials, newsletters or mailings. What’s more! Thousands of new homes should be built by private developers in Sheffield in the next three years, according to a new plan. Sheffield Coun-cil’s new corporate plan sets out challenges, needs and future proposals for the city. The plan says the council will ‘support de-velopers to build 4,600 homes across the city’ as part of a wider plan for 15,000 new homes built over the next decade. And it says development will focus on ‘larger sites that can deliver significant growth, including mixed housing in the city centre together with new services to support this growing community’.As part of building new private sector homes, the council also pledges to devel-op a joint housing zone with Rotherham

Council that will concentrate on five Attercliffe sites. The report says the Attercliffe sites have the ‘po-tential to deliver around 600 homes in the next five to ten years’.

Plans to shake up bin collection services in Shef-field to save £3.4m have been outlined by the council. Among the proposals are plans to intro-duce shared bins, scrap extra Christmas collec-tions and charge £20 for replacement black bins. A public consultation on the issue has been run-ning in the past month. Sheffield City Council claimed the proposed changes were the result of government-imposed cuts which have meant it must save £63m by 2016.Under plans to introduce shared bins it said: "Shared bins will be provided, rather than indi-

vidual bins for every household, in areas where there is limited space at each property to store bins, and there is space in the local amenity to provide shared bins".Councillor Julie Dore, the Labour leader of Shef-field City Council, said: "Part of our budget sav-ings involve coming up with proposals for our waste service that increase efficiency where possible, while still providing a good service for everyone in the city."We welcome people's views and will act upon them so that we do what is best for Sheffield in terms of waste management and recycling."

Law Changes For 2015

This upcoming year will see changes in a number of Employment Laws. April 2015 will see a host of changes to pay for new parents and sick pay with statutory pay rates for maternity, paternity, adoption and shared parental leave, increasing to £139.56 per week.

Statutory sick pay (SSP) rates will increase to £88.45 per week. Statutory adoption leave and pay will no longer have the 26-week qualifying period, and adoption pay will be brought in line with maternity pay, which will be 90% of normal earnings for the first six weeks. In addition, the right to unpaid parental leave will be extended to parents of any child under the age of 18 years. There will also be final changes for younger staff with the Education and Skills Act 2008 being fi-nalised. From this year all young people will need to be in education or training, at least part-time until the age of 18. Upper age limit for jury service will increase from 70 to 75 (England and Wales), with dates to be announced.

New passport checks to be introduced at British borders this month could lead to long queues. The checks start on April 8, with the introduction delayed for a week to avoid the Easter weekend.Eurotunnel and ferry companies will be checking the passports of all those leaving the country to tighten national security. The new arrangement means ferry companies will have to put every passport through a scan-ner to provide an electronic record which is sent to the Home Office.Director general of the Border Force Sir Charles Montgomery told MPs earlier this year that immigration officers detained 6,000 illegal im-migrants in Britain from April to December last year.

The House of Commons Public Accounts and Home Affairs committees have expressed con-cerns about the effect the new checks will have.

EDUCATION AND HIGH STORRS Revising for Tests and Exams

Education and High Storrs – Revising for test and exams

We are heading swiftly towards the end of anoth-er academic year here at High Storrs. Especially as we are changing to our new timetable on Mon-day, 22nd June.

Now is the time many students are preparing for tests, GCSE exams A-level exams. Students will be facing a significant number of exams, even if they are in Y7, as many subjects have an end of year test or exam to assess the progress students have made over the academic year.

Most students know that they should revise thor-oughly for their GCSE or A-level exams, but stu-dents often feel that they do not have to prepare for tests in KS3. However, the more students pre-pare for every test they take the more prepared they will be when taking crucial exams in Y9, Y10, Y11, Y12 and Y13. They will know which revision techniques work for them for different subjects and also their subject knowledge will be much better.

Different students will find that they prefer differ-ent methods of revision, and they will also find

that different methods suit different subjects. We tend to find that students stick with one method of revision, even if they do not do well in exams, and are unwilling to try different tactics. Students should, however, try as many methods as they can as variety within their revision will help them.

Repetition is also very important. Topics should not just be revised once and then left. Topics should be reviewed on a regular basis, even if a

student feels confident that they know a certain topic.

There are many different ways of revising, for ex-ample:• Reading through notes and highlight-ing key words and phrases. Students should NOT highlight long pieces of text, they should focus on single words or short phrases and use these to remind them of the rest of the text.

• Rewriting notes (not just copying) in to their own words. It is important that students un-derstand what they are trying to learn and rewrit-ing it is a good way of checking this.

• Drawing a mind-map, spider diagram or other ‘picture’. The human brain likes things that are bright and colourful and often remembers more information presented in this way. Dia-grams are also a very good way of getting a lot of information on to one page and showing the con-nections between facts. These mind-maps and spider diagrams can be put up around the house so the students can revise from them and other members of the household can use them to ask the student questions.

• Talking things through with someone is also a good way of checking on understanding, even if the other person does not fully under-stand what is being said. The listener can at least check that the student is using the important key words for a subject. If a student can teach some-one else about their subject then this is even bet-ter and shows an excellent level of understand-ing.

As always, if you have any questions, or if we give you any more advice on the above points, please do not hesitate to contact High Storrs School. (Tel no: 0114 267 0000, email

British Asians have been playing an important part in all fields of English life. Their significance can hardly be overemphasized. However, in recent years European and local elections have at-tracted particular attention to the British Asian community where British Asians have won seats and made their way to the legisla-tures.Over the years we have seen a rise in many councils, of mayors and deputy mayors of Pakistani, Kashmiri, Bangladeshi and Indi-an origins being elected to office. More so, a record number of councillors, mayors and deputy mayors of Asian origin, have been elected for the first time in British history. The British Muslim and Asian community have regarded this development as satisfactory and forthcoming and a proud achievement for our heritage. The first asian Mayor of Sheffield was Qurban Hussain in 1993. 2009 saw the first Asian Mayor of Rotherham as Cllr Shaukat Ali took up the position. This year we will see Deputy Mayor Cllr Talib Hus-sain take over as Mayor of Sheffield in May. Cllr Talib Hussain is in his second term as councillor for Burngreave ward, and has actively participated in community affairs for several years more than his five years on Sheffield City Council. It is not yet known who out of the present councillors will be con-testing their ward seats. This information will be available by mid to late April.

European-style expressways are set to turn some of England's major A-roads into "mini motorways". Over the next five years, the newly-formed Highways England, which replaces the High-ways Agency from April 1, will upgrade key A-roads into express-ways - a new classification between an A-road and a motorway. To get traffic flowing more freely, junctions will be modernised, with roundabouts and traffic lights removed and emergency ref-uge and maintenance areas provided. It is possible that bicycles and slow-moving vehicles such as trac-tors will be excluded from these new roads. In addition, advanced technology will be used to detect and help clear incidents more quickly and get traffic moving.According to The Times, 18 major routes are initially set to be-come expressways, with a further seven projects being consid-ered.Similar expressways already exist in Italy, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. They are described by officials as "consistently good roads which are largely or entirely dual carriageway, with grade-separated junctions, giving most users a motorway-quality jour-ney".Drivers are also set to benefit from the provision of roadside wifi to send traffic updates to drivers.Motorways in the South East will be targeted initially through a £150 million innovation fund, which will also look at trialling driv-erless vehicles on the road network.

Labour Party candidate for Nether Edge ward Mohammad Maroof and Cllr Nikki Bond with Nighat Khan at the launch of Thalassemia South Yorkshire. Maroof said "We are grateful to Nighat Khan and her team who have taken brave steps to address an issue which needs urgent attention and awareness. I am thankful to Nether Edge labour coun-cillors who allocated funding from ward pot and took great interest in the issue."

Mohammad Maroof Labour Party candidate for Nether Edge Ward with Paul Blomfield MP and Labour Party activist Mohammad Akbar, Kaltun Elmi and Graham Cole taking Labour Party message to the residents of Nether Edge who will elect their councillor and MP on May 7th.

Big five service providers agree to £100 mobile phone theft cap. A cap on mobile phone bills run up by thieves after handsets are stolen will bring relief to millions of consumers. Five serv-ice providers - EE, O2, Three, Virgin Media and Vodafone - say the £100 cap will be activated providing the phone is reported lost or stolen within 24 hours of it going missing. Consumer groups welcomed the move which they said would protect victims of crime from the added frustration of receiving huge bills. Citizens Ad-vice chief executive Gillian Guy said: “Victims of phone crime should not be paying excessive bills run up by thieves.”

A cap on bills from stolen mobile phones will come as much-needed relief to consumers tar-geted by phone fraudsters. Citizens Advice has been calling for a cap to be put in place after helping consumers landed with bills as high as £23,000.The five firms have drawn up a code of conduct which will oblige them to provide: Clear pricing information and alerts when consumers reach data bundle limits; Information on how to avoid roaming charges; A barring function so users can protect themselves against unauthorised or inadvertent calls to premium rate services and in-app purchases. It comes as the number of smartphone thefts has plummeted thanks to so-called kill switches. Apple, Samsung and Google have all implemented techniques for owners to effectively render a phone useless if it is stolen. As a result, smartphone thefts have fallen by half in London.Customers are advised to protect their phone as they would their wallet and make full use of the security features, including SIM lock.

The national minimum wage is to increase by 20p an hour to £6.70, the biggest real-terms rise in seven years, the government has announced. More than 1.4 million low paid workers will ben-efit from the 3% hike, while rates for younger workers and apprentices will also go up - all from October. The hourly rate for 18 to 20-year-olds will go up from £5.13 to £5.30 (3%) and by 8p to £3.87 for 16 and 17-year-olds (2%).“We know there is a persistent problem with low pay in some sectors of the economy, and areas of the UK. The minimum wage system is neces-sary and right, but is a minimum by definition” Business Secretary Vince Cable.Prime Minister David Cameron said: “At the heart of our long-term economic plan for Britain is a simple idea - that those who put in, should get out, that hard work is really rewarded, that the benefits of recovery are truly national. That’s what today’s announcement is all about, saying

to hardworking taxpayers, this is a government that is on your side.” But TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: ”With one in five workers getting less than a living wage, this is nowhere near enough to end in-work poverty.”“This 20p rise falls far short of the £7 minimum wage which George Osborne promised over a year ago. Ministers have misled working families who have been left worse off” Shadow business secretary Chuka Umunna.

Minimum Wage Rises To £6.70

Households are facing a postcode lottery when it comes to getting the fastest broadband speeds, new research shows. A survey of the UK’s very quickest average connections also shows the north of England enjoying twice as many speedy streets as the south. Superfast broadband is now available to more than three quarters of the UK, but nearly a third don’t realise they can get it.The data, sourced from a million speed tests

done by broadband users, showed wide varia-tions even within the same areas. Generally, a third (34%) of the UK struggles with sub-5Mbps speeds, while just under a quarter (23%) make do with less than 3Mbps.The government says its roll-out of superfast broadband is one of the fastest in the world, and it is on track to reach 95% of the UK by 2017.

An open letter to the residents of Nether Edge ward

I am truly delighted that I have been selected to be your Labour Party candidate for the Nether Edge ward at the local elections on 7th May. I thank you for the warm welcome that you have shown me on your doorstep. If I have not already spoken with you I look forward to seeing you soon.

I have lived with my family in Nether Edge since 1999 where I also used to have my previous business offering legal advice and support. For four years I was a councillor for Central ward fighting against this Tory / Lib Dem government through very difficult times. We have seen the damage that they have done to us with their bedroom tax and vicious cuts to our services. Their cruel immigration controls have hit our families by bringing in an £18,600 minimum threshold for spouses and then taking away the appeal right for family visitors. Under this government poor people have been made even poorer while the very rich have grown even richer. The Tories are the party of the privileged while ordinary people like us have been left to struggle.

Now we have an opportunity to make a real change to our lives. With a Labour government we can start to rebuild our country. Our NHS will not be left to fade away into privatisation with charges and further cuts but will be properly funded along with social care for our old folks. Our young people will not be burdened with huge debts for their tuition fees and will have new opportunities for training, apprenticeships and jobs. The rich will be made to take more of the burden through a mansion tax and a higher income tax rate back up to 50%. It will be a fairer country, not one that serves only the rich and the powerful.

As your new Labour councillor I will do my part to support you. With a Labour council and a Labour government we will start to change people’s lives for the better, strengthening communities and helping small businesses, families, children and our elderly. I hope you will be able to join me by giving me your vote and also by voting for Paul Blomfield, your hard working and widely respected Member of Parliament. Together we can make a real difference.

Bollywood's Mr. Perfectionist is first amongst the three Khans to turn 50 but Aamir feels that age is just a number and he's still stuck at being 18. Superstar Aamir Khan turned 50 on 14 March. Looking back at his over 25-year-old career, he says he's grateful for the opportu-nities he has got.The actor, who has regaled audiences with romantic, action and comedy roles ga-lore, says he feels "very privi-leged and happy "I'm thank-ful that in my (over) 25 years of career, I've done work that I have enjoyed. Very few peo-ple get this opportunity and

I'm grateful for that," he said.Aamir has regaled his fans with films such as Qaya-mat Se Qayamat Tak, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Sar-farosh, Lagaan, Rang De Basanti, Fanaa, Ghajini, 3

Idiots, Talaash and PK, during his act-ing career. Taare Zameen Par, which saw him in the role of a teacher and which marked his debut as a di-rector was also highly appreci-ated.The actor, who's often known as a 'perfectionist', is now prep-ping up for his role in Dangal. He has gone out of his way to gain weight in which he plays the role of wrestler Mahavir Phogat.

Communities Minister Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon has welcomed the launch of Sadaqa Day – a day of positive social action de-signed to bring the whole community together through volunteering. The inaugural Sadaqa Day was held on 22 March and saw local communities and faith groups working in partnership on locally fo-cused projects and charitable initiatives. Led by British Muslim communities, Sadaqa Day will be a date in the diary where every-one – individuals, places of worship, schools, women’s and community groups, scouts and guides groups –– can get involved and contrib-ute towards making their neighbourhoods a better place, irrespective of colour, creed, faith or background.Volunteering activities could be anything com-munities want to donate their time and energy to – from helping the homeless, park clear-ups, collections of items for womens’ shelters, hos-pital and elderly people visits and more. Lord Ahmad said: “People of all faiths have a strong history of positive contribution to life in Britain and Sadaqa Day is another shining example of this tradition. There is no better way to break down barriers and form friend-ships than by mucking in and working hard on a shared interest – and that’s why my depart-ment is proud to be supporting the inaugural Sadaqa Day. I’d urge everyone in the commu-nity to roll up their sleeves and get involved in practical positive social action” Sadaqa is an Islamic term that means volun-tary charity – encompasses any act of giving out of sharing reflecting compassion, love, friend-ship and generosity. The word Sadaqa is often spoken about as the charitable giving of money, but Sadaqa is so much more. It is every deed, every act of giving,

it is each movement in our service to others. This is what the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, meant when he taught, “Even a smile is charity”. Across many faiths, in every school, and in all good homes, we are taught about doing our bit, making our own contribu-tion, playing our part in giving to others and in making the world a slightly better place. Act-ing in genuine service for others is what Sadaqa Day is all about. Sadaqa Day is a precursor to the Big Iftar, the annual British Muslim-led multi faith initiative in which people from different backgrounds share the fast-breaking meal (Iftar) together, during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan.Sadaqa Day also builds on the Jewish-led Mitz-vah Day and the Hindu inspired national Sewa Day as an annual event that brings together people from different faiths and from all parts of society, in selfless acts of charity and service to the community.Britain’s Muslim communities are reported to be among the most generous, and many mil-lions are raised and donated each year. Much is raised for relief aid in developing countries but increasingly, a growing proportion is also being raised for a wide variety of causes and concerns at home.

Mr Shumile J. ChishtyToday robots have become such an urge to be used in the modern day as it is now time for use to move forward. Drones have been with us for not that long, mainly used in wars, and it has been requested by the public citizens that we use these drones for good use. Recently Amazon has won approval from US federal regulators to test a delivery drone outdoors. The Federal Aviation Administration has issued an experimental airworthiness certificate allowing test flights over private, rural land in Washington State. Under the provisions, the flights must be con-ducted at 400ft (120m) or below dur-ing daylight hours. The company had asked for permission to fly at altitudes up to 500ft (150m).The drone must also remain within the line of sight of the pilot and observer. The person fly-ing the aircraft, meanwhile, must have

a private pilot's certificate and current medical certification. Amazon must also provide monthly data to the FAA on the number of flights conducted, pilot duty time per flight, unusual hardware or soft-ware malfunctions and other informa-tion. The Seattle Company had asked the FAA for permission to fly drones for pack-

age deliveries last July, but it faces public concern about safety and privacy. The ap-proval is a win for Seattle-based Amazon and advances its plans to deliver pack-ages using small, self-piloted aircraft. As part of Amazon Chief Executive Jeff Bezos' plan to deliver packages under a program dubbed Prime Air, the company is devel-oping drones that fly at speeds of 50mph (80kph), operate autonomously and sense

and avoid objects. Amazon also is work-ing with NASA on an air traffic manage-ment system for drones. While amazon are in the process of launching a drone , a Dutch student at tu delft university has revealed a prototype ‘ambulance drone’, a flying defibrillator able to reach heart attack victims within min-utes. Developed by engineering gradu-ate Alex Momont , it can fly at a speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour (60 miles per hour). Painted in emergency

services yellow and driven by six propel-lers, the drone can carry a four kilogramme load – in this case a defibrillator.Around 800,000 people suffer a cardiac ar-rest in the European Union every year and only 8.0% survive. The time always counts when trying to save someone’s life, and this drone has enough speed to save time to cure the victim before they suffer more severely.

DronesWide variations in the rate of caesarean sections carried out in Europe have raised concerns about whether women are benefit-ing from best practice, researchers have said. A new study pub-lished by the journal BJOG has found around a quarter of births in the UK are by C-section, compared to a low of 14.8% in Ice-land and a high of about 52% in Cyprus. Authors of the study, led by academics at City University London, said it highlights a clear “lack of consensus about best practice” between countries of the EU, Norway, Switzerland and Iceland. The UK figures are neither high nor low, but there is a concern that the caesarean rates are still going up, with huge variations even between hospitals. It urged further investigation, suggesting professionals’ attitudes to care at delivery, adherence to guidelines and differences in healthcare systems and how they are financed could be to blame for the stark variations. There are some women who undergo the surgery unnecessarily, which this reports suggests there are be-cause of the wide variation. When a caesarean is really necessary it can mean the difference between life and death but but when it isn’t it can have big effects on the mother and the baby.

Huge Rise In Caesarean Section Births In Europe

The campaign to elect the next British Par-liament has begun as Prime Minister David Cameron met Queen Elizabeth II at Buck-ingham Palace and requested her majesty to dissolve the parliament. The election for all 650 seats will take place on May 7. The last day to file the nomina-tion is on April 9th . New parliament will be summoned on May 18 and the surveys are predicting a hung parliament with mi-nor parties like Scottish Nationalists and UK Independent Party (UKIP) calling the shots. After meeting the queen, the prime minis-ter launched the formal Conservative elec-tion campaign at No 10.“There is a stark choice at the polls,” Cam-eron told the media. “The next prime min-ister walking through that door will be me or Ed Miliband.”He warned that Labour’s “economic chaos” would mean “over £3,000 in higher taxes for every working family to pay for more welfare and out-of-control spending”.Mr Cameron told the voters they can “choose an economy that grows, that cre-ates jobs, that generates the money to

ensure a properly funded and improving NHS and a government that will cut taxes for 30 million hardworking people. Or you can choose the economic chaos of Ed Mili-band’s Britain — over £3,000 in higher tax-es for every working family to pay for more welfare and out-of-control spending. Debt will rise and jobs will be lost as a result.”Labour Leader Ed Miliband launched his campaign at Bloomberg in London with a mini-manifesto focussing on the business policies of the Labour. Miliband warned that an EU referendum proposed by Cam-

eron in 2017 would trigger a bitter two-year campaign in which a re-elected Tory party would tear itself apart over whether the UK should remain in Europe.Labour hopes to use fears about this uncer-tainty as a lever to urge companies to look again at some of Miliband’s pro-business policies. The party also plans to highlight the UK’s falling productivity ahead of fig-ures due to be published. The polls are fluctuating. A Sunday Times Poll put Labour ahead by three points, but a ComRes Poll for ITV News and the Daily Mail shows the Conservatives four points in the lead at 36% to Labour’s 32%.Sky News’ projection of what Parliament would look like based on the latest polling figures gives Labour 279 seats, with the To-ries just one behind on 278. The SNP would win 52, the Lib Dems 16, UKIP two and oth-ers 23.With Parliament dissolved, MPs immedi-ately lose their title and are asked to re-move references to it, or place disclaimers on any email or social media account which names them as an MP.

The bus operator has announced that the daily ticket will increase by 10p, the week-ly ticket by 50p and the monthly ticket by £2. There will also be a rise on selected single fares.First said the price rises are down to the increase in costs associated with operat-ing buses. But the company stressed that its popular £1 adult fare is frozen and its saver tickets remain cheaper than in 2012. South Yorkshire-wide daily, weekly and monthly tickets are also frozen as are the £2 FirstDay ticket and £5 FirstWeek ticket.

1. Whose responsibility is it for the mainte-nance of the boundary walls to a house? How do you check this?

The Title Deeds explain you who is respon-sible for each boundary wall of your prop-erty. If the boundary wall is in a bad state of repair and it is your responsibility then you need to repair or arrange for the repairs to the wall at your own cost. The conveyance

plan shows which boundary is yours with a T mark, if it is shown inwards towards you then it is yours and if it is marked with a H then the boarder is shared.

2. What is the difference between Good Leasehold and Title Absolute?

A Good Leasehold Title is given when there is no proof at the Land Registry of who

owns the freehold of a property. Ti-tle Absolute is given when the prop-erty is registered at the Land Registry and you know that the person pro-viding you with the Leasehold is in a position to do so.

3. What are early repayment penalties on a mortgage? How can you avoid these?

If you have a fixed term mortgage of 5 years and after 2 years you want to change mortgages or move house you will have to pay the early redemption penalties, as you are redeeming your mortgage early. One way of avoiding this is keeping your mort-gage with the same Lender but swapping to another product.

4. What does “Subject to Contract” mean when buying a house?

When purchasing a property prior to com-pleting you have to exchange Contracts. Once contracts are exchanged then you are then in a legally binding contract. Up un-til this point, the property is sold “Subject to Contract” as either party can withdraw from a purchase or sale at any time.

Once contracts are exchanged then both parties are bound by its terms.

Bill Gates stands atop Forbes magazine's annual list of the world's rich-est people, as Facebook Inc's Mark Zuckerberg joined the top 20 and basketball star Michael Jordan ploughed new air by making the list for the first time.Gates' net worth rose to $79.2 billion from $76 billion a year earlier, putting the Microsoft Corp co-founder at the top for the 16th year in the last 21. Mexico telecommunications mogul Carlos Slim Helu ranked second, worth $77.1 billion, while Berkshire Hathaway Inc chief Warren Buffett was third, at $72.7 billion.Forbes identified a record 1,826 billionaires, up from 1,645 last year, worth a combined $7.05 trillion.Of the record 197 women, the highest-ranked was Wal-Mart Stores Inc heiress Christy Walton, who was eighth at $41.7 billion. The youngest billionaires were Evan Spiegel, 24, and Bobby Murphy, 25, who co-founded mobile messaging app Snapchat, and are each worth $1.5 billion. The United States had the most billionaires, with 536, followed by China at 213, Germany at 103 and India at 90. Russia, which has struggled with currency and oil market turmoil, saw its collection of billionaires fall to 88 from 111, Forbes said.

Apple bosses have unveiled the com-pany’s hotly anticipated watch. The lowest-price Apple Watch will be £299 for the Sport version, with prices steadily climbing across the range of three styles that were first previewed last year. The watch is coming on April 24, Apple chief Tim Cook announced at a live event in California, calling it the “most personal device we have ever created”. ”It’s not just with you, it’s on you”, he added. “It’s a revolutionary way to connect.”

The Apple Watch Sport, which comes with a range of coloured rubber bands has two prices; the 38mm watch face will cost £299, with the 42mm costing £339. Apart from price, the other big question was over battery life, and Mr Cook said the Apple Watch would have “all-day battery life” lasting “around 18 hours”. The Apple Gold Watch will cost around £800. As well as the much an-ticipated announcements around the Apple Watch, the technology firm also introduced a new MacBook notebook.

source BBC:Illegal immigrants are being smuggled out of Britain to avoid deportation – before being sneaked back in after gaining im-migration status elsewhere in Europe. Using the ‘asylum loophole’, people smugglers charge £1,000 per person to ar-range trips to Europe, allowing illegal immigrants to gain le-gitimate paperwork. It means that if they are caught trying to return to Britain, they are not sent back to their birth country but to the European state that gave them their first asylum-seeking status. The report told how many of the illegal immigrants – and some who had outstayed their student visas – were told to make their way to Italy to apply for asylum. Once there they are fingerprinted and are able to gain immigration status, al-lowing them to lengthen their stay in Europe. If they are caught trying to return to Britain, they only face be-ing returned to Italy or other European countries rather than their countries of origin. In 2006, Italy announced it would grant citizenship to immi-grants who had stayed in the country for five years. However, it emerged that from January to August last year, 140,000 ille-gal immigrants had entered Europe via Italy. The eight-month figure was more than the entire total for the previous year.Less than two years ago, border officials in the UK told of their ‘shock’ at the ‘very unusual’ case of 28 illegal immigrants try-ing to smuggle themselves out of Britain. The immigrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka hid on a Polish lorry on a P&O ferry bound for France. They were returned to Dover to be questioned at the Border Force immigration centre.

Britain’s outstanding First World War debt has been repaid after the Chancellor redeemed £1.9 billion from an outstanding bond. The 3.5% War Loan was the most widely held of any UK Government bond with more than 120,000 holders, or 60% of all holdings of government gilts. About 97,000 of these investors held less than £1,000 and almost 38,000 holders owned less than £100, according to the Treasury. The 3.5% War Loan was issued in 1932 by the then-chancellor Neville Cham-berlain in exchange for the 5% War Loan 1929-47, which was issued in 1917 as part of the effort to raise money to pay for the First World War.“We can, at last, pay off the debts Britain incurred to fight the First World War” Chancellor George Osborne, when announcing the plan to repay the debt in December. The Debt Management Office estimates that Britain has paid some £5.5 billion in total interest on the 5% and 3.5% war loans since 1917.

Police have lost track of almost 400 registered sex offenders they should be monitoring, include a child rapist who van-ished two years ago, official figures have revealed. Others have been off the police radar for much longer, one for 14 years. A child protection charity said: “The horrifying pros-pect is that these offenders will have rebuilt their lives in communities who don’t know them.” Everyone on the regis-ter - currently around 60,000 - is required to say where they are living. But a total of 396 registered sex offenders have vanished after moving home without telling the authori-ties their new address. Re-offending is high and particularly among those who have left the support system that was de-signed to help them. Some of those missing are foreign nationals who may have returned to their own countries. There are offenders miss-ing from their homes in most of the UK’s 45 forces, but only Scotland says it knows where all its 4,775 sex offenders are living.Offenders who have chosen to go off the radar should be pursued and punished. By disappearing they are removing the incentive for staying in the system for the many others who choose to comply.

Farhan Akhtar has become the first male goodwill ambassador for UN Women in South Asia, joining

the list that includes the likes Sania Mirza, Emma Watson and Nicole Kidman among others.

UN Women is an initiative by the UN whose main focus has been to end violence against women in the world.Farhan Akhtar started the MARD (Men Against Rape and Discrimination) initiative in 2013 and since then the multi-faceted actor has been a strong advocate for women’s rights. He, time and again, has spoken against the crime against women and we believe there couldn’t have been a better representative for India at the UN Women.

A global conference has urged countries to take steps to re-duce the consumption of tobacco, which it said was a lead-ing cause of disease and death worldwide. In its final declara-tion, the 16th World Conference on Tobacco Health called for wider implementation of World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for cutting smoking rates and reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs). WHO says tobacco-related diseases kill 35 million people annually, of whom 80% are in low- and middle-income countries. In its final declaration, the conference said ‘Tobacco products pose an especially heavy burden on low- and middle-income countries and should be de-normalised worldwide.’ The con-ference insisted that tobacco use, in all its forms, is a major contributor to the occurrence of cancer, cardiovascular dis-ease, diabetes and respiratory diseases. They warned that to-bacco causes one in six of all such deaths and that almost half of current tobacco users will eventually die of tobacco-related disease. And despite a decline in the number of smokers in many countries, more needs to be done to curb tobacco use to meet the global target of a 30% reduction in consumption by 2025.

The death toll in the world’s most brutal con-flicts climbed by more than 28 per cent last year from 2013 with bloodshed in Syria worse than all others for the second year running. More than 76,000 people were killed in Syria last year, up from 73,447 in 2013. Many of the most violent wars involved radical Islamist groups. Ukraine’s separatist conflict in the east of the country propelled it onto eighth on the

list, having been largely conflict free in 2013. At least 14 separate wars killed more than 1,000 people in 2014, up from 10 in 2013.

A spokesperson of the European Union (EU) has said that the government of Pakistan should halt all executions as capital punishment violates in-ternational law and basic human rights. The spokesperson referred to the death penalty as an unjust and cruel punishment and said capital punishment should be eliminated globally. The government has executed 48 convicts since the moratorium on the death penalty was lifted following the horrific terrorist attacks on the Army Public School in Peshawar last year. The condemnation of the death penalty by the EU comes at a time when the government is set to hang underage convict, Shafqat Hussain on Mar 19, 2015. Hussain's case has triggered out-rage from rights campaigners, who complain he did not get a fair trial and was only 15 at the time of the killing. The EU is only one of many international organi-

sations urging the government to halt executions of convicts all over the country. Amnesty Inter-national and the Human Rights Watch have also called for a stop to the hangings. The EU had opposed the removal of the morato-rium in December last year, and again expressed concerns during the First Pakistan-EU Local Hu-man Rights Dialogue where the delegation met to discuss Pakistan’s GSP Plus status.

Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif has promised infrastructure and developmental projects in the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). In a veiled reference to the 'Naya Pakistan' slogan touted by the the Pakistan Tehkreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Nawaz said he wanted to see a 'Naya Khyber Pakhtunkhwa'.He said the PTI-led government in KP had been given every opportunity to remedy the prob-lems faced by the province, but it had failed. "We are laying the foundations for a new Paki-stan. We did it before, we are doing it today, and in the future you will see the government will not just make a new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but the best Khyber Pakhtunkhwa."He claimed no new motorway had been built in Pakistan after the completion of the Peshawar - Islamabad - Lahore motorway, and said that the government has now planned to extend the mo-torway to Karachi in an effort to make various

parts of the country accessible by road and bring the provinces closer together. He also said that Hazara motorway is not far from completion, and the day that a Peshawar - Kabul motorway is built is not far either."Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will have expressways and motorways, and the PML-N will build them for you and your future generations," he stated. He said his government will build hospitals, schools and universities in KP. Anticipating an extension of the laptop scheme, he said that within the next three to four years, children would be eligible for thousands more laptops. He also addressed the problem of terrorism in the province, as well as the electricity shortfall. He also advised the president of the Khyber Pa-khtunkhwa chapter of PML-N to appoint upright candidates to contest the KP local government elections.

Pakistan lived up to its billing with a topsy-turvy ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 campaign. After a poor start, Pakistan raised hopes of a 1992-like turnaround. But, the team was let down by its batting and fielding, to be knocked out by Australia in the quarterfinal.Yet, throughout the tournament, it proved itself to have one of the best bowling units. And this despite losing out on the services of Saeed Aj-mal, while Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Moham-mad Hafeez missed out owing to injury.Pakistan began its tournament on an inauspi-cious note, going down to India for the sixth time in World Cup history. A 150-run loss to an equally unpredictable West Indies side, which had earlier been defeated by Ireland, com-pounded Pakistan’s woes. The loss set Misbah-ul-Haq’s men back in a big way, and the team was deflated.“We just lost in all three departments. Couldn't bowl well, a lot of dropped catches, and batting, totally flopped,” said Misbah after the loss to the West Indies.

“I think the only way is just to forget this, learn from this, just to improve your performances. That's how up to just come up. If you just got trapped in the previous two games, then you can't perform. Every game is a new game, and now we have to leave it behind and positively prepare for the next ones and try to win all oth-er games.”This was to be the last ODI tournament for Sha-hid Afridi as well as Misbah. Afridi will be dis-appointed that he failed to fire, getting to just 116 runs and two wickets from seven matches. Misbah, on the other hand, led from the front, steadying the innings when Pakistan most need-ed it, to become its leading run-getter with 350 runs at an average of 50.Compared to him, Akmal got only 164 runs in seven outings, Shehzad managed 222 and Maq-sood scored 124 in five matches. One memorable aspect of the quarter-final loss for Pakistan would be the hostile bowling of Wahab Riaz. Riaz, Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker with 16 scalps, had led the attack in the

absence of the bowling stalwarts. In the quarter-final, he did it again, producing a menacing and memo-rable six-over spell of fast bowling during which he got David Warner and Michael Clarke, while trou-bling Shane Watson no end.Rahat Ali, with seven wickets from five games, and Sohail Khan, the only specialist right-arm paceman in a sea of left-armers, who took 12 wickets from seven matches, were both impressive.

British MEP, Sajjad Karim, was recently presented with Pakistan’s highest national honour to non-Pakistanis for services that have helped the coun-try. He was awarded the Sitara-i-Qaid-i-Azam in Islamabad by Mamnoon Hussain, the President of Pakistan, joining ranks with the British Queen and Nelson Mandela.Dr Karim - who represents the North West of Eng-land - has been one of the most prominent Brit-ish politicians to advocate Pakistan’s case within the EU, and the UK has been at the forefront in

supporting Pakistan. Links have developed signifi-cantly over the past decade through the efforts of Sajjad and the European Parliament Friends of Pakistan group which he founded in 2004.In December 2013, following an eight year cam-paign, the European Parliament finally approved GSP+ trade status for Pakistan, which allows Paki-stani textiles to flow easily into Europe. It is esti-mated to create one million jobs in the country’s ailing textile industry and the EU and UK are keen to combat terrorism by supporting stability and security in the region. European consumers will also benefit from cheaper imports made in Paki-stan. In recognition of his work towards achieving this, Dr Karim was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Management and Technol-ogy in Lahore and travelled to Pakistan to be pre-sented with the award by the then Governor of Punjab, Mohammad Sawar, himself a past Mem-ber of the UK Parliament in Westminster.

EU Says Pakistan Should Halt All Executions

One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor peo-ple live. They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family. On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, “How was the trip?”“It was great, Dad.”“Did you see how poor people live?” the father asked.“Oh yeah,” said the son.“So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?” asked the father. The son answered: “I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches

to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lan-terns in our garden and they have the stars at night. Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.“We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.“We have servants who serve us, but they serve others. We buy our food, but they grow theirs.“We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.”The boy’s father was speechless. Then his son added, “Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.”Moral: Love, Unity, Care, Satisfaction is richer than any comfort money gives.

Muslim parents need to do more to protect their children from being groomed online by extrem-ists, Home Secretary Theresa May has said. Sev-eral young Islamic Brits have already slipped the net and headed out to the middle East to join Islamic State (IS).But Conservative MP Mrs May - who was dealt a blow after having to drop new rules preventing universities and colleges to ban external extrem-ist speakers - said the UK Government would continue to do all it could in the fight against terrorism. However, she called on mothers and fathers to become more aware of what their children got up to online. She said: "I think that parents don't sometimes realise the impact of the internet and particu-

larly social media. "Sometimes they don't know what interactions their children are having and what is going on can be effectively unseen by parents. One of the messages that I want to give to parents is that if you are concerned they might be being radicalised or if they might be thinking of going to Syria to join terrorist groups please say something as soon possible."Mrs May said the threat the UK faced from ter-rorists was a real one - and also rebuffed sug-gestions the police were becoming "armed via the backdoor". The threat level (to the UK) was raised last August to severe, a decision taken in-dependently of ministers.About 600 Britons are believed to have travelled to Syria and Iraq since the conflict began, ac-cording to Scotland Yard counter-terrorism.

With the Easter holiday here, a growing number of parents have taken their children out of school to avoid the inevitable high prices - despite it be-ing against the law. Over half of parents now believe that it is acceptable for children to miss school in order to get a better holiday deal, ac-cording to a survey. It is possible to save almost £1,000 by taking a child out of school two days early, or as much as £250 by taking them out one day early. With potentially huge savings, many believe it outweighs the fines incurred for missing school - a maximum of £60 per pupil per parent if paid within 21 days. And with holiday prices of-ten rising by as much as an additional 100 per cent when the school holidays start, the savings gained from taking one day off at the beginning or end of term can be the difference between a family being able to afford to go abroad, or stay-ing at home.

In a recent report published by the Department for Education, there were one million fewer school days lost to term-time holidays in the au-tumn and spring terms of the 2013/14 academic year when compared to those of 2012/13.However, the myth that pulling a child out of education for holidays is harmless to their edu-cation has been disproved by evidence. Al-lowing pupils to regularly miss school can be hugely detrimental to a child's life chances. The most recent annual figures show we are making progress, with 130,000 fewer pupils regularly missing school.Parents should never simply discount a possible penalty notice from the cost of a cheaper holi-day. Taking children out of school without per-mission for a holiday is a criminal offence, and when doing so parents are risking prosecution which could mean much higher financial penal-ties and a criminal record.

A £5 coin will be issued to celebrate the birth of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s second child. The royal baby is due in mid to late April. The Queen, the baby’s great-grandmother, ap-proved the decision at a meeting of the Privy Council at Buckingham Palace. Thousands of commemorative coins were struck to celebrate the arrival of George in July 2013 and sold out within days.In 2013, the Royal Mint produced 10,000 solid sil-

ver £5 coins, which cost £80 each, and 2,013 22 carat gold sovereigns, which cost £800 each. Both featured the prince’s namesake St George. Babies born on the same day as George were entitled to receive one of 2,013 free “lucky” silver pennies. When George turned one, the occasion was also marked by a commemorative £5 coin – making him the first member of the royal family to have his first birthday honoured with a new UK coin.

Welfare advice services targeting the district’s poorest communities will continue for a further three years due to an additional £3 million from Bradford Council. The investment from the Pub-lic Health department aims to target the link between poverty, debt and ill health by offering greater access to welfare rights and debt advice within local communities. The wide range of ad-vice services aim to reach households where in-dividuals are long term sick and disabled, carers, lone parents, unemployed or low paid. Coun Imran Hussain, Deputy Leader of Bradford Council, said: "The community-based welfare ad-vice services have been greatly appreciated and

welcomed by the people who have used them. Often the services have been the starting point for people to understand the kind of support they can get, bringing a range of organisations togeth-er to solve often complex and very different prob-lems. Our evaluation of the programme shows how important it is to have advice delivered in a range of venues across the district in order to reach the most vulnerable people in our society. Tackling poverty, health inequalities and support-ing the vulnerable are council priorities and the part played by advice services has been recog-nised despite the big spending cuts the council has been forced to undertake.”

Nearly 50 buildings in Bradford have benefited from free Wi-Fi in Bradford. Libraries, visitor information centres, community halls, museums and children's homes are all see-ing Wi-Fi installed thanks to the SuperConnected Cities programme. As part of the SuperCon-nected Cities programme, Bradford Council has received Government funding to invest in broad-

band and wireless capabilities in key areas. The Government scheme is to enable easy and fast online access to residents, visitors and business-es, and to advance connectivity and broadband access across the UK's major cities. Bradford and Leeds have led the way in con-nectivity which meets the growing use of smart-phones and tablets.

A growing campaign to blame the drivers of die-sel cars for dangerous air pollution has been at-tacked by motor manufacturers. Emissions from diesel engines, including particulates and nitro-gen oxides, have been linked to heart disease, cancer and asthma, while air pollution is said to kill 29,000 people a year in the UK. After decades of tax incentives in favour of diesel vehicles, some drivers are now facing penalties for choosing die-sel cars that cost less to tax but do more damage to air quality.Today’s diesel engines are the cleanest ever, and

the culmination of billions of pounds of invest-ment by manufacturers to improve air quality. We need to avoid penalising one vehicle technol-ogy over another. The popularity of diesel is the result of favourable vehicle tax rates introduced by the government in 2001 to reduce carbon dioxide levels from petrol engines. Last year, the World Health Organisation warned air quality in most cities that monitor outdoor air pollution failed to meet safe levels, with people at risk of respiratory disease and other health problems.

Bollywood beauty Katrina Kaif arrived in London to unveil her new wax figure at the prestigious Madame Tussauds wax museum. There’s a new Bollywood face in London town as superstar Katrina Kaif has been immortalised in wax work at Madame Tussauds. The Bollywood beauty unveiled her new wax figure at a special press conference on March 27, 2015. The new addition celebrates 15 years of Bollywood at London’s Madame Tus-sauds, which is already home to some very fa-miliar Indian faces.Katrina competed with two other big Bollywood names for the tribute; the stunners Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone. During sum-mer of 2014 the Mad-ame Tussauds website hosted a poll for their next Bollywood wax figure, allowing fans to vote for their favourite actress. And the fans picked Katrina as who they wanted as their next celebrity wax ava-tar. Katrina is notably the second Indian super-star to have been voted by the public, following the first Bollywood wax statue, Amitabh Bachchan, in 2000.With Katrina’s wax figure costing over £150,000, it took 20 artist a total time span of 4 months, and Madame Tussauds teased with many behind

the scenes images of Katrina’s face being meas-ured and even holding her own eyeballs! The wax statues sees Katrina in a dancing pose, from one of her biggest item hits, ‘Sheila Ki Ja-wani’. While she is known for many big dance numbers, this proved to be her fans’ favourite track to see the actress in, and Katrina even do-nated her exquisite Manish Malhotra-designed

lehenga and com-plete jewellry for the model to wear. Speaking about how grateful she was for the recognition, the 31-year-old said: “It’s an amazing honour to be asked to be fea-tured alongside icons of the Indian film in-dustry. I have really enjoyed working with the team and am delighted with the end result. “I can’t believe how detailed and accurate it is. It is just like looking in a mirror in 3D.”Katrina can now add another medal to her list of achievements, with her wax statue

joining the likes Amitabh Bachchan (2000), Aishwarya Rai Bachchan (2004), Shahrukh Khan (2007), Salman Khan (2008), Hrithik Roshan (2011), and Madhuri Dixit-Nene (2012) at the world famous tourist attraction.

Obese women are 40% more likely to develop certain types of cancer than those who are slim-mer, a leading charity has claimed. Being exces-sively overweight increases a woman’s risk of post-menopausal breast cancer as well as cancer of the bowel, gall bladder, womb, kidney, pancre-as and gullet, said Cancer Research UK (CRUK). In a group of 1,000 obese women, 274 will be

diagnosed with a weight-related cancer in their lifetime, compared with 194 in a similar group of healthy weight woman, according to figures re-leased by the charity.“Losing weight isn’t easy, but you don’t have to join a gym and run miles every day or give up your favourite food forever. Just making small changes that you can maintain in the long term

can have a real impact” CRUK. One way obesity could increase the risk of cancer is through the production of hormones by fat cells, especially oestrogen. In the UK it is estimated that 18,000 women develop cancer as a re-sult of being overweight or obese each year, said CRUK. Dr Julie Sharp, the charity’s head of health information, said: “We know that our cancer risk depends on a com-bination of our genes, our envi-ronment and other aspects of our lives, many of which we can con-trol. Helping people understand how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the first place remains crucial in tackling the disease.”Lifestyle changes, like not smok-ing, keeping a healthy weight, eat-ing a healthy diet and cutting back on alcohol, are the big opportuni-ties for us all to personally reduce our cancer risk.

Scientists working to find a vaccine for type 1 di-abetes have said it could be developed “within a generation”. Researchers at several UK universi-ties are to carry out tests and trials of prototype jabs as part of a £4.4 million project. They esti-mate the first working vaccines to help delay or possibly prevent type 1 diabetes, which affects about 300,000 people in the UK, could be avail-able in the next 10 years. This research is hugely exciting because it has the potential to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of people living with type 1 diabe-

tes, as well as leading towards a longed-for cure.People with type 1 diabetes, the most common found in children, are unable to produce the hormone insulin and require daily injections, a healthy diet and regular exercise. King’s College London will lead the country’s first-ever trial of a prototype vaccine in children and teenagers liv-ing with the condition. Within four years they expect to see results from studies of more than six potential treatments, and within 10 years to see the first vaccine therapies delivered to pa-tients in the clinic.

Meningitis B can kill a healthy child within hours of the first symptoms. The disease is an infection of the meninges - the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.Since the vaccine was licensed two years ago there have been 1,130 cases, of which at least 452 people died or suffered disabilities. The first symptoms usually include fever, vomit-ing and headaches.

Others include limb pain, pale skin, neck stiff-ness, dislike of bright lights and confusion. It is commonly found in children under five years of age but can also affect teenagers aged 15 to 19. It is fatal in around 10 per cent of cases. Some of those who survive are left with long-term prob-lems, such as amputation, deafness, epilepsy and learning difficulties.

Residents in the region, particularly the elderly, are being warned about the increase in 'cold call-ers' running telephone scams. Telephone calls that are unsolicited - cold calls - are used by both genuine companies and fraudsters to reach new customers.

But Trading Standard Officers from Rotherham Borough Council are warning that people should be on their guard because there has been an in-crease locally in the numbers of ‘scam’ calls re-cently.

A polite "No" and ending the call is expected by genuine companies when tele-marketing. So the public should not be afraid to end a call in this way if they have any suspicions. Remember IT IS YOUR PHONE and genuine telephone marketing companies and organisations expect a large pro-portion of calls to be ended this way. Individuals should be very wary of all calls from persons and companies that they have not had any previous dealings with.

Anyone can receive a cold call but worryingly lat-est official research figures reveal nationally the majority - approximately 80% of people - are over 65.

There has been an increase in these types of calls and many are ‘scams’. These 'scam' calls take many forms. Those who pick up the phone may be told that the caller is from their bank or a well-known company, for instance the supplier of your internet or telephone service.

Genuine callers of this kind will never ask for bank account details and as a rule no-one should give these details over the telephone. Banks and companies who a customer trades with on a reg-ular basis will already have those details.

These 'scam' callers may say that a resident has won a prize in a lottery or prize draw; that they are eligible for a refund of some sort etc. and they need details of their bank.

But remember - IF YOU HAVE NOT ENTERED THE DRAW, RAFFLE, LOTTERY, HOW CAN YOU HAVE WON IT?

If anyone receives a suspicious call in which the caller gives a number to ring to verify they are genuine then they should not hang up but if pos-sible, use a second phone, such as a mobile, to ring the number.

It may be they are telephoning the same person/place or are speaking to the fraudsters partner in crime. So do NOT accept that a number given to you over the phone is genuine. Instead, ALWAYS use the contact details provided by the bank, company etc. that you have normally deal with.

CHECK THE CALLER OUT and apply the common-sense rules:1. If what the caller is telling you seems too good to be true - THEN IT USUALLY IS! 2. DO NOT provide personal banking details to cold callers over the telephone.

To report unsolicited calls householders believe to be a ‘scam’ or if you feel you are the victim of one of these calls contact the Citizens Advice Helpline on 03454 04 05 06.They will pass the information on to the relevant authority, the Police or Trading Standards. If the caller has said that someone will call at your address in person at some future time, and you feel afraid or threatened by this, telephone the Police on 101 or 0114 2202020.To stop unwanted telephone calls Contact The Telephone Preference Service by ringing 08454 070 0707 or online at www.tpsonline.org.uk This free service will stop almost all unwanted calls. Once registered, and after 28 days of registering you receive an unwanted call, you can complain to TPS who will investigate the complaint.Unwanted ‘junk’ mail that often consists of ‘scams’ can be reduced in a similar way by con-tacting The Mailing Preference Service on 08454 7034599 or online at www.mpsonline.org.uk this scheme works in the same way as TPS.

A man stopped at a flower shop to order some flowers to be wired to his mother who lived two hundred miles away. As he got out of his car he noticed a young girl sitting on the curb sobbing. He asked her what was wrong and she replied, “I wanted to buy a red rose for my mother. But I only have seventy-five cents, and a rose costs two dollars.”The man smiled and said, “Come on in with

me. I’ll buy you a rose.” He bought the little girl her rose and ordered his own mother’s flow-ers. As they were leaving he offered the girl a ride home. She said, “Yes, please! You can take me to my mother.” She directed him to a cem-etery, where she placed the rose on a freshly dug grave. The man returned to the flower shop, canceled the wire order, picked up a bouquet and drove the two hundred miles to his mother’s house.Moral: Life is Short. Spend much time as you can loving and caring people who love you. En-joy each moment with them before it’s too late. There is nothing important than family.

PROPERTY CORNER

HOUSING AND POLITICS

The election is now less than six weeks away, there are many issues which are being debated. The issue that has taken my interest is housing and for the first time in my memory it is a subject that is being discussed with all the parties ad-dressing the topic. Generally it is a subject that gets relegated behind other policy issues not this time.

So why is it being discussed, the answer lies in history .Housing was a major issue following the second world war with the country rebuild-ing, many new homes were built coinciding with major social housing programmes. It was a boom time in house building which also helped in creat-ing employment. Since those days there has not been such intensity in house building with de-mand for homes increasing year on year to the extent that it has now reached a stage where in-tervention is needed.

The other major issue that has added to the housing crises is that homes were generally af-fordable in line with salaries as building declined demand has increased ,the economic dynamic of supply and demand has kicked in forcing prices upwards. The average UK salary will only support a house to the value of approximately £100k, therefore is easy to spot that prices on average are much higher. What this does is demand for housing in the social sector increases as there is no corresponding increase in building in this sec-tor demand far outweighs supply.

So the debate begins as to how this shortage should be handled which for the first time in generations has engaged all the political parties. It is certainly a step in the right direction as ac-tion was no longer an option. Therefore what can we expect? It is clear that we need more homes in particular for the younger generation, with the present administration intervening through various initiatives such as Help To Buy, relaxing certain planning conditions such as converting empty office accommodation into homes.

In this article I do not intend to discuss any par-ties’ policies in detail but instead outline the rea-sons for intervention. The following areas which need to be looked at:

PLANNING

The planning system holds the key to future de-velopment. Many people will argue this needs a overhaul not just tweaking, the system has evolved over many years and could be modern-ised even further. Successive governments have looked at varying or amending various planning laws over many years this has had an effect. But one question that keeps coming up is that we should start looking at Greenfield sites or more particularly the Green Belt. Clearly this is an "elephant in the room” moment people are re-luctant to talk about it because it arouses many emotions. I can say that in the last few years the question is beginning to be asked albeit apologet-ically. It is clear this debate has a long way to go, but it is without doubt that planning has a huge role to play.

THE PRIVATE RENTED SECTOR

It is an area that I have talked about previously, it is without doubt, the debate on the Private Rented Sector has begun. In the last year or so

there are schemes which are developing around the country which are aimed at the rented mar-ket. Clearly this will be beneficial because it will provide homes of quality for the long term. It is not a new phenomenon it is widespread in Eu-rope where numerous people rent their homes. As more such projects are developed it will clear-ly start to address some of the demand issues. Whatever new Government comes into power they will need to embrace and enhance the Pri-vate Rented Sector.

It is predicted as the new tenure for the 21st cen-tury.

PUBLIC SECTOR HOUSING

It is more commonly referred to as Council Hous-ing; there were tremendous numbers of new homes built post war that accommodated many families at affordable rents. Houses were of high quality in pleasant surroundings, whole new communities developed. Council house building in most areas of the country is either nonexist-ent or just a trickle. It is clear there is demand for these homes but as supply has dwindled ,waiting

lists for such homes now runs into many years. It is not unheard of that in some areas this is almost 20 years.

There is a school of thought that building new Council homes for rent should be the way for-ward. It is also evident that in a small way this is happening in some areas. Also in the last few years critics of the Right To Buy policy have be-come more vociferous saying that so many homes have been sold to tenants at discounted prices without being replaced. Whatever your thoughts on that subject it is clear the policy was and is very popular, a dilemma for any change.

HOMES FOR THE ELDERLY

A key area which needs some thought is the ris-ing 55,s a substantial percentage of the popula-tion. The need for a different type of offer to the standard care home is a demand, which is begin-ning to be filled by Extra Care Villages. The issue is that we need a major initiative to address this growing need.

The challenge for any Government is how to ac-commodate this need without making it unaf-fordable.

LAND

It is a finite commodity which needs to be used for the benefit of improving and addressing the needs of society. There is a debate around how public sector land should be used, with some people arguing that it should be used to alleviate the developing housing crises.

The Green Belt issue will also be a major chal-lenge for the future.

In conclusion I hope this article has given you a flavour of the debate surrounding housing, it’s going to develop as years go by. The important point is that it is on the agenda of all the political parties.

As Norman Kirk a former Prime Minister of New Zealand said people want: Somewhere to Live, Someone to Love, Something to Do and Some-thing to Hope For in my opinion a very simple for-mula of expectation from Government.

People often say that Pakistan is a poor country. With weak institutions, shabby infrastructure facilities, lim-ited provision of electricity and gas, inflation, illiteracy, extremism, terrorism, polio and a population growth synonymous with several underdeveloped African na-tions, Pakistan is truly suffering from numerous crises. It should however be noted that no matter how poor or impoverished we think our country might be, the world at large views Pakistan with awe and perhaps a hint of deterrence coupled with sincere sympathy. The media in particular has focused a great deal on the various problems faced by our beloved nation. This should not necessarily be considered a negative thing, as it is important for our people to understand the chal-lenges we face but it is also of paramount significance that our nation comprehends the strategic importance of Pakistan. It is my opinion that the geography of Pakistan has been the most consequential factor in shaping our history. Pakistan shares its borders with China, a global eco-nomic giant, with India, an emerging global force both economically and militarily, with Iran, an oil rich nation of significant regional and global importance and with Afghanistan, a frequent warzone. The geographical lo-cation of Pakistan is such that our nation cannot afford to ignore what goes on in our neighboring countries. Even though every nation strives for peace and the se-curity of their citizens, conflict is often times, inevitable. In the last century, America has been the dominant force in global conflicts. It would not be unfair to say that almost every major conflict in the world in one way or another has something to do with today’s super-power. Because of Pakistan’s strategic location, we have in the past, found it wise to involve ourselves in wars which are not completely our own. An important man once said that without America, the Soviets could have been defeated in Afghanistan, without Pakistan, not so much. This one line is enough to explain Pakistan’s stra-tegic importance. We have fought three wars with our immediate neigh-bor, India. Much of Pakistan’s history is solely focused on competing militarily with our powerful neighbor. Our insecurity is somewhat justified as we have witnessed first hand, the damage a hostile nation can cause to a

weaker neighbor. This was the reason why Pakistan had no other choice but to develop nuclear arsenal after In-dia’s test in order to ensure that Pakistan and India do not meet in the battlefield again. Nuclear deterrence is perhaps the most important variable in modern conflict resolution. The emergence of modern technology and innovative war machines has given birth to another kind of war, fought far away from the secure boundaries of a rich country’s well-protected borders. This kind of war is fought with money, intelligence and strategy. As power-ful nations cannot afford to go into a conventional war with each other, they often choose to engage in proxy wars. The Vietnam War was a cold war era proxy war, which lasted for 19 years, 5 months, 4 weeks and one day. While several countries took part in the conflict, it can be implied that the only real partici-pants of this conflict were the Soviet Union and the United States. Estimates show that both sides lost over half million people each, while no side ex-actly got what they were hoping for. In wars like this, there is no clear win-ner or loser, since there is no clear player and no clear judge. It could perhaps be said that the episode of Vietnam was a source of immense irrita-tion for the United States forces as their expectations were shattered and their resources plunged. Slowly and slowly, the inferior soviet backed force drained Ameri-can resources before their ultimate withdrawal. Afghanistan was the next venue for the proxy war to be fought between these super powers. The CIA along with the ISI found it wise to train mujahideen fighters on Pa-kistani soil, fueling a hatred of the ‘atheist/kafir’ soviets in their hearts. The soviet war is perhaps the only proxy

war, which the United States has won, and Pakistan’s role in this victory has been most crucial. It cannot be denied that Pakistan’s military is one of the finest in the world. Our Air force, artillery, corps, Navy and premier intelligence agency is a force to be reckoned with. This is why the world immediately thinks of Pakistan’s armed forces whenever a conflict arises in this region. The proxy war currently being fought in Yemen is one of absurd contradictions. It is still not clear which side is fighting for which side because allies in one region are enemies in another. To be precise, Irani backed militias are allied with American backed forces to fight ISIS in the Iraqi border. However, the American/Saudi backed forces are fighting against Irani backed Houthi rebels in

Yemen. The former president has left Yemen, fleeing in the safe domain only Saudi Arabia could provide. The rebels are in control on the ground but they do not necessarily have an upper hand. When America and Saudi Arabia unite against a common enemy and they are genuinely serious in their efforts, it is quite hard to for the rebels to match the un-disputed military strength of their enemies. Saudi Arabia and Iran repre-sent the Sunni and Shia Mus-lims of the world. Their global significance stems from being associated with a particular

strand or version of the Islamic faith. Both are wealthy and powerful but one is blessed with more friends than the other. While Pakistan enjoys a good relationship with both countries, we are more inclined towards Sau-di Arabia for very obvious reasons. Firstly, Saudi Arabia has been generous in its aid to Pakistan. At the start of this Government, Saudi Arabia provided over $2 Billion in aid so that our exchange rates could be in a better position. Secondly, Pakistan is Sunni majority state like Saudi Arabia and thus finds itself more ideologically

aligned with their Saudi counterparts. Thirdly, Saudi Arabia is a very close ally of America, so is Pakistan, but Iran is isolated from the international community due to its controversial statements and actions. So far a coalition of 10 countries has allied with Saudi forces and Pakistan is yet to make a formal decision. Our Prime Minister along with our Defense Minister have made it very clear that any attack on Saudi Ara-bia’s sovereignty will evoke a strong response from Pa-kistan. Our foreign office has briefly stated that a formal request has been issued to them on behalf of the Saudi authorities but a decision is yet to be made. Imran Khan has very clearly stated that Pakistan should not directly involve itself in this conflict while it should be at the forefront of the negotiations. There is one stakeholder, perhaps the most important one in this regard, which has kept an unnerving silence, Pakistan’s Armed Forces. The decision makers of Pakistan’s strategic policy al-ready have a lot on their plate. A war against the Tali-ban, escalating border tensions with India and frequent political instability is enough to keep an army busy for a long time but with great power comes great opportuni-ties to benefit. Brother Zia Ul Haq is not generally con-sidered to be a loved personality in Pakistan but there is more to the man than what meets the eye. He served in Jordan, annihilating Palestinian forces and he was a primary commander in the soviet war. He obliterated whoever rose against his interests. We can learn a lot from the old general, after all, he ruled with an iron fist for 11 years, developed a wonderful relationship with Saudi Arabia and America and won a great war of his time. The consequences of Zia’s policies are evident today. Pakistan is involved in several international conflicts and is presently a battleground itself for various con-flicts whether it is the fight against terrorism or sectar-ian extremists. Our land mass is already a battle field where innocents die by the thousands and killers are not always held accountable. The decision whether to intervene in Yemen ultimately lies with the political and military leadership of Pakistan but I feel that the question is not of what, why, where or who but of how much?
