Easter
The famous theologian Reinhold Niebuhr was known to never preach at Easter. When someone
asked him about it, he was quoted saying, "I want to watch other preachers making a fool of them-
selves trying to explain the resurrection."
Every Easter I feel that the story we are listening to is so much bigger than anything we can ex-
plain or dissect with or minds. The resurrection is one of the great mysteries of our faith, and yet,
as Paul and other leaders of the first century would insist, it was clearly more than a mystery. It
happened!
That distinction was very important to them. In their time, mystery religions were as popular as
yoga in our day and those eastern religions often featured a drama involving the death and resur-
rection of a god. Sound familiar? I thought so. So, it was easy for contemporaries to dismiss the
Easter story as one of those mystery tales. If not for the inconvenient fact of Jesus' bloody hands
and feet, the marks of his crucifixion...
The gospels and Paul may differ on various details of the resurrection, but they don't differ on one
point: it actually happened! That, to me, is as wondrous and marvelous, as mind boggling and
thought provoking as it has ever been. That, and the possibility of resurrection in every human life,
in your life and in mine, in that of the addict, in that of the bigot, in that of the traditionalist, in that of
the notorious pessimist, in that of the person without a trace of faith or hope. It can happen!
There are many beautiful Easter poems around, linking the awakening of nature with Easter faith.
Most of them are fine and inspirational pieces of religious poetry. But they often neglect to mention
that the resurrection was preceded by the crucifixion. Please, please, let us never forget that the
miracle of the resurrection in a human life does not come without death to the very things that pre-
vent us from coming into our own. We are linked with Jesus in that way. But one thing is for Easter
sure: it can happen!

Secret Pal Program Update---
Twenty–one 1st – 6th graders have received cards, stickers, cookies, and other fun stuff from their own personal
Secret Pals this Lent. The kids will continue to get mail through April 7th, the day of our Secret Pal Party.
This year’s party has a very “Structured” theme----that’s the only hint you will get! The party will go from the end of the church service (about 11 am) to noon in the fellowship hall. Some light refreshments will be served, and a fun activity is planned. Many thanks go to Sharon Brenfleck and Becky Work for planning a great party
this year!
Bring a Friend Sunday Update–
Twenty plus children were “drawn” to this year’s Bring a Friend Sunday, held on March 10th. A lively tour-nament game of Pictionary Junior began the party, with the Jolly Ranchers against the Fireballs----it was a drawJ (The teams scored equally). The game was followed by delicious tacos and more fun fellowship. Many thanks to Brian Brenfleck, Joanne Guido, and Tom Work for leading the games, and Evy Hayes and
Gretchen Flanagan for making the great tacos!
SCS Goes Thrifty!
On March 24th the Sunday school visited our very own thrift store! After learning about the store’s purpose and volunteers from Colleen Kwortnik, our kids took a short tour of the store before they sorted the 14 large bags of items that they brought as their offering for the day. Many thanks to all the parents who contributed so
many gently used items.
Rounding Up Our Kids for VBS on July 21st- July 25th
Son West Roundup is our theme for this year’s Vacation Bible School. We will be leading our buckaroos to Jesus as they ride the trail through the Old Testament stories of Moses. Through five action packed evenings
the kids will learn of God’s ultimate plan, ultimate power, ultimate rescue, ultimate trust, and ultimate love!
If you are interested in helping out at VBS, please let Joy Jacobson know at [email protected]. Last year it took more than 45 people to run the program for 67 kids, and we are expecting even more chil-dren this year! More details will be available soon on our church website. You will be able to register on-
line.
A VBS kick-off is being planned for May 19th during the Sunday school hour.

Adult Forum Sessions, Winter and Spring 2013
Always at 9:45 a.m. in the parlor
Attention! Here is our revised Sunday morning Adult Forum schedule for the spring of 2013. The
schedule runs mostly parallel to the choir singing early. That's why the timing is spread out unevenly. The
first three sessions will engage the group in an exploration of biblical psalms. There will be a session about
spiritual gifts. The last three sessions will feature one of the great Adult Education leaders of our time, Pas-
tor John Ortberg. We will follow his series "If you want to walk on water, you've got to get out of the
boat." I would like to thank Linda and Bill Hubler, Jamie Nourie and Lauriue Kane for serving as leaders
and facilitators.

"To know the word that sustains the weary..."
"The Sovereign LORD has given me a well-instructed tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed." (Is 50:4)
In Isaiah 50, we find this description of a servant of God, whose ministry consists of listening and
sustaining the weary with words of wisdom or comfort. This may feel like a daunting task, and
that's because, well, - it is! We all know of people who have been hurting badly. Maybe we remem-
ber ourselves times of desperation, when life just didn't make sense, when the future seemed bleak
or when we were emotionally drained by a loss. Those are difficult times, times when people need
their family, friends and church to help them through.
In the church, there is a long tradition of care for the soul, especially during those times. It is usu-
ally part of the pastor's call and responsibility to provide for that. However, there are more people
in the church who have the spiritual gifts and the desire to serve in a similar role, and we have de-
cided to equip our people to use their ears and tongues (in that order!) to help sustain those who
are going through rough times. We have joined Stephen Ministry, which has trained lay people in
the church for this task since 1975 and has done so with great vision and organizational skill. On
Sunday, March 17, Rebecca Ledder and Laurie Kane were commissioned to be our Stephen Leaders
at St. Peter's. Together with me, they attended a full week of intensive training in January and are
currently going through further training provided by another local Stephen Ministry congregation.
We couldn't be more blessed to have Laurie and Rebecca serve in that capacity.
Between now and Memorial Day Weekend we are looking to identify more of God's people called by
the spirit to become Stephen Ministers. They need to be persons who have the time and are willing
to receive significant training, who have the desire and stamina to sustain people in need; they
need to be individuals who rely on their faith. We will be clear about what's required and we will
make sure that whoever serves in this role is supported at all times. If you wonder whether this is
something you could do, ask yourself the following questions: "Do you enjoy listening to others,
even if that includes occasionally heartbreaking moments?" "Can you keep a secret?" "Do you think
you are able to manage emotional tension and give it to the Lord?" Please reach out to Rebecca,
Laurie or to me. You can reach these two brave ladies or pastor at [email protected]

Updates from St. Peter's
Property: During our annual meeting we introduced the congregation to the need for a significant investment in the
replacement of our two main roofs. The property committee had already obtained two somewhat conflicting assess-
ments from roofers. In addition, we have since had an independent building inspector from the Mission Investment
Fund provide an analysis. Once his report is received, we will move forward with plans and very likely a capital
campaign. At this point it looks like one of the roofs has to be replaced immediately while the other can wait for a
number of years. We thank people from the Property Committee for their due diligence in assessing this need.
Youth and Family Ministry: Brian Brenfleck is gathering people who have been involved in youth and family min-
istry activities to develop a clearer job definition for the youth and ministry position we are seeking to establish. He
has already obtained important input from Molly Beck Dean, our synod youth ministry specialist. We know that
finding the resources and the right person for this position will be a challenge. But we also know that spiritual lead-
ership for our young people and families is vital for the future of the church. Please pray for us! More updates in the
next newsletter...
Music Ministry: When the staff support team and council decided last year to not pursue plans for a new Choral
Director - in favor of the Youth and Family Ministry position - it was suggested to have a choral specialist come in a
few times every year for special projects. There are a number of good reasons for that. It lightens the significant load
of our Music Director and gives the choir an opportunity to work with a choral specialist a few times a year on fo-
cused projects. Louise Gurdelman led the choir on Palm Sunday and two more projects are planned for this year. It
is also a blessing that our choir has grown by four people in 2012.
Please see the flyer on page 12 of this issue. Members of the congregation will be supplying bed and board
and transportation for the Gospel choir during their sojourn in North Wales.
Focus on Social Ministry: This Lenten season brought a focus on Social Ministry. On five consecutive Wednes-
days, we hosted guest speakers from Manna on Main Street, Kencrest, Silver Springs, The Lutheran Settlement
House and the folks from the Faith Worship Center in East Lansdowne. The offerings for each of those nights went
to the organizations that presented. Some of the organizations are already faithfully supported by our Thrift Store.
(Hint: support our Thrift Store - they do important work!) St. Peters will also join many other local congregations in
trying to sponsor a meeting between church leaders and local officials to more effectively serve the needs of poor
people in the Greater Lansdale area.
Communication: Means of communication are changing all the time in the 21st century and we are just trying our
best to keep up. John Ledder and Lorraine Daniels attended a workshop about communication in the 21st century,
which was led by the synod communications team. He also agreed to lead our communication committee. Summing
up the workshop he said "we are not doing badly but there are things we can certainly improve on." Stay tuned...
Stephen Ministry: On Sunday, March 17, Rebecca Ledder and Laurie Kane were blessed and commissioned as
Stephen Ministry Leaders for St. Peter's. Both have invested significant time in leadership training and are now at-
tending Stephen Ministry training provided by Lansdale Baptist Church. The application process for Stephen Minis-
ters from St. Peter's will begin after Easter.
Summer Camps: This year, St. Peter's is offering three weeks of summer day camps. There will be subsequent art
camp weeks, followed by a cooking camp. July 29 – August 2: Art Camp for K-2nd grade; August 5-9: Art Camp
for 3rd – 6th grade; August 12-16: Cooking Camp for 3rd –6th grade. During those weeks, our AA groups will meet
at St. Luke's down the street. Vacation Bible School will be from July 21 - 25. (see the summer schedule on the last
page )

SPRING INTO SUMMER AT THE THRIFT SHOP
It is the spring season at the Thrift Shop – and almost time for our summer break.
Thank you to the Sunday School children who spent their time in the Thrift Shop on Palm Sunday. They learned about this social ministry, brought donations, helped to sort and shelve clothing, and had an
Easter egg hunt to encourage them to look high and low at every shelf.
In April you will find any remaining Easter merchandise on sale. We already have shorts, tee’s, and
tank tops on display and will soon be adding swim wear.
Sometime in May clearance sales will begin. Clothing and linens will be ½ price, then a bag sale, and during our last week every item will be 25 cents. All other merchandise such as dishware, knick-knacks, books, and toys will also be ½ price and then 25 cents during the last week. Watch the Sunday bulletin or
check the on-line calendar for specific sale and closing dates.
We will accept donations as long as space permits.
St Peter’s Thrift Shop Ministry Supports Local Charities
As part of our Wednesday evening Lenten services this year, our congregation hosted guest speak-ers from various charities in the area. We are fortunate to have so many wonderful organizations in our
community that help those in need.
What you may not know is that our congregation continually supports the financial needs of these organizations through the work of our Thrift Shop! If fact, in 2012 alone, the Thrift Shop raised over $16,000 that went directly to support local charities including Nehemiah’s Way, Silver Springs - Martin Luther School, KenCrest and Manna on Main Street. These contributions go above and beyond our congre-
gation’s benevolence giving to the Synod which is made through weekly offerings to the General Fund.
The Thrift Shop was started back in 1992 to support the work of Nehemiah’s Way, a social minis-try originally founded by St Peter’s to provide support for women and children affected by domestic vio-lence. Over the years, the Thrift Shop has expanded its support to other local charities that help women and children. Faithfully led by Colleen Kwortnik, our Thrift Shop committee includes Lois Kesack, Ellie Park, Ginny Benner, Amy Gillan, Inge Coleman and Kay Mulhall. We are blessed by the work of these
women and many others who contribute their time and talent to maintain the operations of the Thrift Shop!
DONATE – VOLUNTEER – SHOP
Help us spread the word! When your family is looking for a place to DONATE unwanted items – tell them about the Thrift Shop. If you have a couple of hours of extra time each month – VOLUNTEER.
If your friends and neighbors like a good bargain – tell them to SHOP at the Thrift Shop.
As a church, Jesus calls us to care for our neighbors. One way we can all help fulfill this mission is by supporting the Thrift Shop. The more successful the Thrift Shop is – the more good work St Peter’s can
do for the community.
