St. Joan of Arc School

Kindergarten just completed a unit based on American Symbols, with a focus on the American Flag, the White

House, Mount Rushmore, the Bald Eagle, and the Statue of Liberty.

We learned what symbols are and why they are

important. With each symbol, the students read books independently and aloud, watched videos, illustrated their own books, created corresponding art projects,

and wrote two facts about each symbol.

This unit is always a big hit and the students learn so much!

Understanding the Scriptures for Sunday, April 8, 2018 The Gospel this week can be divided into two parts. The first part deals with Jesus giving his disci-ples the authority to forgive sins. The second part focuses on the story of “Doubting Thomas.” For this week’s article, we will focus on Christ bestowing on his disciples the ability to forgive sins. The disciples were in hiding, fearing treachery and malice from the Jews. They had locked them-selves securely in a room, keeping out of sight of those who might do them harm. We can even say that the Gospel was hidden; a “bushel basket” had been placed over its light. However, it was in this locked room, in this place of hiding, that Jesus entered and stood in the midst of his followers. Our Lord did not accuse them, nor spoke to them harshly; rather, the first words out of his mouth were, “Peace be with you.” This peace that the Lord announced was a divine peace that can only come from God. After he offered his peace to them, Jesus told his disciples that he was sending them out from the confines of the room and into the world. They would bear his message and bring his peace to others. After this, Jesus breathed on his disciples and gave them the power to for-give or retain sins. God’s breath is witnessed throughout the Scriptures. There are, in particular, two examples where God’s breath is associated with life. The first comes from the book of Genesis. God was forming man out of the ground when he breathed life into his creation. At that moment, man became a living soul: “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nos-trils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Gn. 2:7) Another example comes from the prophet Ezekiel during the time of the Babylonian Captivity. Ezekiel had a vision of dry bones being revived through God’s breath. “Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.” (Ezekiel 37:5-6) Notice in both of these examples how God’s breath brought life. In Genesis, it brought about our creation. In Ezekiel, God’s breath brought about the recreation of man. When Jesus breathed on his disciples, he was giving them the power over life and death. They would be able to free people who were fettered by Satan. They would be able to bring new life to others and restore them to the image of God. The disciples would be able to do this because they now had the authority to forgive sins. Christ gave his disciples the authority to forgive sins because it is sin that keeps us away from God, who is the source of all life. Thus, John highlights the institution of the sacrament of Reconciliation by Christ. John shows us how the divine life of God will continue to give new life and revive the dry bones through the sacraments that he has established; most especially, in the sacrament of Recon-ciliation. For questions about the Catholic faith or the Scriptures, please email Michael Lewandowski at [email protected].

Notes from Music & Liturgy

Let Us Rejoice The joy of the Resurrection continues today – indeed, throughout the entire Easter Season – as we celebrate the Second Sunday of Easter. We use many of the same hymns, we use the Sprinkling Rite at some Masses, and even our proper Responsorial Psalm is

the same one we used last Sunday. Psalm 118, today’s Responsorial Psalm, tells us to rejoice. We hear the Psalmist singing of God’s love, and how it lasts forever. We give thanks to God for the great things He has done. Our worship resounds with the joyful sounds of this Psalm. Take time this week to rejoice and be glad! Jim Susic

Music for Next Weekend April 14 and 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter 9:30am Mass – Parish Choir 6:00pm Mass - Ensemble All other Masses will have music led by an organist and a cantor.

Memorialize a Hymnal As we celebrate this Easter Season, consider memorializing a hymnal. What a wonderful way to celebrate the Resurrection of the Lord by remember-ing a special person in your life. Hym-nals can be memorialized in memory of any deceased person, or they can also be donated in honor of someone or a family event, such as a bap-tism, special birthday, or another type of celebration. The donor is recognized with a special memorial plate in the front of each book, and the person being hon-ored is also recognized on the same memorial plate. This is a wonderful way to remind us to pray for some-one. And, not only would you be praying for this individual, but anyone who opens that hymnal would see that individual’s name, and maybe also offer a prayer for him or her. The cost to memorialize a hymnal is $20. Envelopes are available at the Resource Center, at the entrances to the church, and also at the parish office. Donation envelopes can be returned to the parish office, or they can also be returned in the offertory collection at our weekend liturgies. For more information on memorializing a hymnal, please contact Jim Susic at 630-353-4529 or [email protected].

April Weddings The following couple will exchange marriage vows at St. Joan of Arc on April 21, 2018:

Joshua Soto and Giulia Hindermann We wish this couple God’s blessings as they prepare for their life together!

Music Ministry Opportunity Do you like to sing but cannot make a commitment to regular rehearsals for our Parish Choir? If so, consider becoming part of our ‘new’ Music Ministry opportunity at the 6:00pm Mass. We invite all interested singers to join in singing at the 6:00pm Mass, on a regular basis. We will meet in the church at 5:00pm each week, rehearse the music for that evening, and then lead the music at the 6:00pm Mass. There are no additional weekly rehearsals to be a part of this group. All individuals from 6th grade on up are invited to join us. This is a GREAT way to participate in the liturgy, without an extensive time commitment. We would also like to include instrumentalists! If you are proficient on bass, drums, guitar, or a woodwind instru-ment, let us know that you are willing to share your time and talent. If you are interested or planning to participate, please con-tact Jim Susic, Director of Music, at [email protected], or at (630) 353 – 4529, so that we may plan accordingly.

2019 Mass Intentions Mass intention requests for 2019 are now being accepted. We ask that requests for Mass intentions be submitted in written form to the Parish Office, Attention: Mary Beth Kerner. Requests may also be submitted via email to [email protected]. Response to these requests will be given via letter or email sent to the individual requesting the Masses. We regret that we cannot honor all specific requests of dates and times. The stipend is $10.00 for each Mass request. In order to make dates for Mass intentions available to all parishioners, and to be able to offer Mass intentions for the recently deceased, a limit of five (5) annual Mass intentions will be allowed per calendar year per family requesting. Additional Masses may be requested during the year for a living intention or for someone recently deceased. (Please note that one Mass may be offered for the individual for whom the intention is being requested). The Diocese of Joliet will also accept Mass intentions to be offered by our retired priests if your request for Masses at the parish exceeds the annual limit.
